Abstract:This paper will focus on the directed assembly of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on various substrates into highly organized structures that include vertically and horizontally oriented arrays, ordered fibers and porous membranes. The concept of growing such architectures is based on growth selectivity on certain surfaces compared to others. Selective placement of ordered nanotube arrays is achieved on patterned templates prepared by lithography or oxide templates with well-defined pores. The growth of nanotubes is achieved by chemical vapor deposition using hydrocarbon precursors and vapor phase catalyst delivery. The new technique developed in our laboratory allows enormous flexibility in building a large number of complex structures based on nanotube building units. This paper will provide an insight into the creation process of the longest (single walled) nanotube strands. We will also discuss some of our recent efforts in creating nanotube circuits selectively and controllably and on the spatially resolved electronic properties of nanotubes.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes, quintessentially one-dimensional quantum objects, possess a variety of electrical, optical, and mechanical properties that are suited for developing devices that operate on quantum mechanical principles. The states of one-dimensional electrons, excitons, and phonons in carbon nanotubes with exceptionally large quantization energies are promising for high-operating-temperature quantum devices. Here, we discuss recent progress in the development of carbon-nanotube-based devices for quantum technology, i.e., quantum mechanical strategies for revolutionizing computation, sensing, and communication. We cover fundamental properties of carbon nanotubes, their growth and purification methods, and methodologies for assembling them into architectures of ordered nanotubes that manifest macroscopic quantum properties. Most importantly, recent developments and proposals for quantum information processing devices based on individual and assembled nanotubes are reviewed.

Abstract:Among the remarkable variety of semiconducting nanomaterials that have been discovered over the past two decades, single-walled carbon nanotubes remain uniquely well suited for applications in high-performance electronics, sensors and other technologies. The most advanced opportunities demand the ability to form perfectly aligned, horizontal arrays of purely semiconducting, chemically pristine carbon nanotubes. Here, we present strategies that offer this capability. Nanoscale thermocapillary flows in thin-film organic coatings followed by reactive ion etching serve as highly efficient means for selectively removing metallic carbon nanotubes from electronically heterogeneous aligned arrays grown on quartz substrates. The low temperatures and unusual physics associated with this process enable robust, scalable operation, with clear potential for practical use. We carry out detailed experimental and theoretical studies to reveal all of the essential attributes of the underlying thermophysical phenomena. We demonstrate use of the purified arrays in transistors that achieve mobilities exceeding 1,000 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and on/off switching ratios of ∼10,000 with current outputs in the milliamp range. Simple logic gates built using such devices represent the first steps toward integration into more complex circuits.

Abstract:In this chapter, we present a review of our continuing efforts toward the development of discrete, low-dimensional nanostructured carbon-based electron emitters. Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers, herein referred to simply as CNTs, are one-dimensional carbon allotropes formed from cylindrically rolled and nested graphene sheets, have diameters between 1 and 500 nm and lengths of up to several millimeters, and are perfect candidates for field emission (FE) applications. By virtue of their extremely strong sp2 C-C bonding, intrinsic to the graphene hexagonal lattice, CNTs have demonstrated impressive chemical inertness, unprecedented thermal stabilities, significant resistance to electromigration, and exceptionally high axial current carrying capacities, even at elevated temperatures. These near ideal cold cathode electron emitters have incredibly high electric field enhancing aspect ratios combined with virtual point sources of the order of a few nanometers in size. The correct integration and judicious development of suitable FE platforms based on these extraordinary molecules is critical and will ultimately enable enhanced technologies. This chapter will review some of the more recent platforms, devices and structures developed by our group, as well as our contributions towards the development of industry-scalable technologies for ultra-high-resolution electron microscopy, portable x-ray sources, and flexible environmental lighting technologies. © 2012 by Pan Stanford Publishing Pte. Abstract:This article presents our recent work in the controlled synthesis of multiwalled (MWNT) and single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) with ordered architectures. The general synthesis approach involves chemical vapor deposition using rationally designed catalyst and substrates. The results include self-oriented MWNTs, individual SWNTs grown from controlled surface sites, and structures of suspended SWNTs along well-defined directions. The chemically derived nanotube architectures have opened up new possibilities in fundamental characterization and potential applications of nanotube materials. Systematic electron transport measurements are carried out to elucidate the electrical properties of various classes of SWNTs and to explore the physics in one-dimensional systems. High-performance electrical devices based on individual SWNTs are enabled by combining synthesis and microfabrication approaches.

Abstract:The latest advances in the synthesis, properties, characterisation and applications of carbon nanotubes and related materials are presented. The roots of this field and some important historical issues are also reviewed. The mechanical, thermal and electronic properties, as well as applications, of carbon nanotubes are emphasised. These structures have the potential to revolutionise materials nanoscience in the new millennium, because they will be the key components in the fabrication of nanotransistors, robust nanocomposites, conducting polymers, sensors, storage devices, field emission sources and smart materials. However, some important challenges that need to be overcome before real devices are placed in the market are also addressed.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate the fabrication of solid state and vacuum electronic devices using carbon nanotubes as the active channel and emitters. Single wall and multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT) are deposited directly on substrates using chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD), respectively. The fabrication of top gate and side gate field effect transistors is demonstrated using single wall CNTs. Vertically aligned multiwall CNTs are used to fabricate field emitter arrays or micro-gated field emitters, which have potential application in field emission displays, microwave amplifiers or electron guns.

Abstract:Graphene is theoretically a robust two-dimensional (2D) sp(2)-hybridized carbon material with high electrical conductivity and optical transparency. However, due to the existence of grain boundaries and defects, experimentally synthesized large-area polycrystalline graphene sheets are easily broken and can exhibit high sheet resistances; thus, they are not suitable as flexible transparent conductors. As described in this issue of ACS Nano, Tour et al. circumvented this problem by proposing and synthesizing a novel hybrid structure that they have named "rebar graphene", which is composed of covalently interconnected carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with graphene sheets. In this particular configuration, CNTs act as "reinforcing bars" that not only improve the mechanical strength of polycrystalline graphene sheets but also bridge different crystalline domains so as to enhance the electrical conductivity. This report seems to be only the tip of the iceberg since it is also possible to construct novel and unprecedented hybrid carbon architectures by establishing covalent interconnections between CNTs with graphene, thus yielding graphene-CNT hybrids, three-dimensional (3D) covalent CNT networks, 3D graphene networks, etc. In this Perspective, we review the progress of these carbon hybrid systems and describe the challenges that need to be overcome in the near future.

Abstract:Through 30 years of research, researchers have gained a deep understanding of the synthesis, characteristics, and applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, up to now, there are still few industries using CNT as the leading material. The difficulty of CNTs to be applied in industry is the gap between the properties of CNT-based aggregates and those of a single carbon nanotube. Therefore, how to maintain the intrinsic properties of CNTs when they are assembled into aggregates is of great significance. Herein, we summarize and analyze the research status of CNT materials applied in different fields from proven techniques to potential industries, including energy storage, electronics, mechanical and other applications. For each application, the intrinsic properties of CNTs and the real performances of their aggregates are compared to figure out the key problems in CNT synthesis. Finally, we give an outlook for building a bridge for CNTs from nanoscale structure to macroscopic application, giving inspiration to researchers making efforts toward the real application of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:The lattice geometry of natural materials and the structural geometry of artificial materials are crucial factors determining their physical properties. Most materials have predetermined geometries that lead to fixed physical characteristics. Here, the demonstration of a carbon nanotube network serves as an example of a system with controllable orientation achieving on-demand optical properties. Such a network allows programming their optical response depending on the orientation of the constituent carbon nanotubes and leads to the switching of its dielectric tensor from isotropic to anisotropic. Furthermore, it also allows for the achievement of wavelength-dispersion for their principal optical axes - a recently discovered phenomenon in van der Waals triclinic crystals. The results originate from two unique carbon nanotubes features: uniaxial anisotropy from the well-defined cylindrical geometry and the intersection interaction among individual carbon nanotubes. The findings demonstrate that shaping the relative orientations of carbon nanotubes or other quasi-one-dimensional materials of cylindrical symmetry within a network paves the way to a universal method for the creation of systems with desired optical properties.

Abstract:The discovery of lower dimensional forms of Carbon with unique mechanical and electronic properties has generated new possibilities in many areas of technology especially in nanotechnology. Recent emergence of some nanoscale device applications show how this potential is turning into a reality. Over the years, we have employed various levels of theory to study the structure and properties of carbon based materials for nanoscale applications. In this paper, we present two new theoretical studies. We present a study on the transition metal catalyzed growth of single wall carbon nanotubes. In the second study, we investigate the relation between mechanical deformation and excess charge in order to understand how introducing and controlling the charge at various locations might modify the mechanical and acoustical properties of carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that introducing excess charges into single wall carbon nanotubes can lead mechanical deformations that do mechanical work. The results suggest a wide range for practical applications, such as NEMS, acoustic sensors and nanoactuators. The peculiar chemistry of carbon results in diverse forms of structure: the 3-dimensional network of diamond and the 2- dimensional sheets of graphite have been known through the ages. The applications such as; a) Structural and mechanical properties of nanotubes, (refs 1-3); b) Tribological properties of carbon for NEMS applications (ref 4); c) Thermal transport properties of nanotubes and carbon based hetero- structures (refs 5-6), and d) Formation of fullerenes, (ref 7) have appeared elsewhere. In this paper, we will present two new theoretical studies. Over the past several years a large number of synthetic procedures for the production of Carbon nanotubes have been developed. Abstract:High-performance energy-storage architectures are fabricated by forming conformal coatings of active nanocrystal building blocks on preformed carbon nanotube conductive scaffolds for lithium ion electrodes. This unique structure offers effective pathways for charge transport, high active-material loading, structure robustness, and flexibility. This general approach enables the fabrication of a new family of high-performance architectures for energy storage and many other applications.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and assembling them into macroscopic structures are of great importance to the applications of carbon nanotubes, and a deep understanding of the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes would be an indispensable prerequisite for well-defined synthesis in a controllable way. Here we show some of our recent progress in carbon nanotube's growth mechanism, controlled synthesis, and applications. By introducing a ~ 13C labeling method, we revealed that the growth mechanism of the carbon nanotubes made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the “extrusion model”. Serials of labels can be embedded into CNTs by tuning the composition and the flow rate of the reactive gases during the growth process, and the growth rate of CNT arrays can be calculated thereby. The fabrication of super\|aligned CNT arrays was expanded to 4-inch wafer scale. A novel method was invented to process the raw yarn by passing through volatile organic solvents. As a result, both the strength and manipulability were improved substantially. The processed yarn can be applied as thermal electron sources, large current density field emitters and in fluorescent tubes etc. Thermal interface materials (TIMs) has significant importance in IT industry, we prepared CNT array-polymer matrix which has very high thermal conductivity and extremely low thermal resistance. Techniques like chemical modification, tip etching and surface metal layer were explored to enhance the thermal conductivity of the CNT thermal interface materials.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received broad attention in the past decades due to their excellent physical and chemical properties and thus been regarded as a powerful candidate for future star-materials. Although various CNT products and their related applications have been demonstrated recently, their performance can hardly meet the researchers’ expectations compared with their theoretical properties. The current predicament is caused by the immature synthesis method, including the basic science and the producing technology. As the synthesis with controlled structures determines its future, this review summarizes the progress on the basic research and industrialization of CNTs in the past decades, including the fine structure control, aggregation status design and scale-up production, and further points out the way for the future development of CNTs combining with specific applications.
Manipulation of Ultralong Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes at Macroscale

Abstract:A parallel, controllable yet simple approach was developed to manipulate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and create complex architectures of SWNTs. This approach was based on the utilization of flexible poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film as a mediator for indirectly manipulating the SWNTs. With this PMMA-mediated manipulation approach, SWNTs were bended at controlled bending angles without degrading their pristine properties. Meanwhile, crossbar arrays with controlled crossing angle were created. Moreover, complex two-dimensional (2D) architectures, such as steplike and zigzag structures of SWNTs were obtained without complicated lithographic processes. Our manipulation technique paves the way to fabricate novel 2D configuration of SWNTs, induce controllable strain in SWNTs and then build new devices based on them.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great interest for many potential applications because of their extraordinary electronic, mechanical and structural properties. However, issues of chaotic staking, high cost and high energy dissipation in the synthesis of CNTs remain to be resolved. Here we develop a facile, general and high-yield strategy for the oriented formation of CNTs from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through a low-temperature (as low as 430 °C) pyrolysis process. The selected MOF crystals act as a single precursor for both nanocatalysts and carbon sources. The key to the formation of CNTs is obtaining small nanocatalysts with high activity during the pyrolysis process. This method is successfully extended to obtain various oriented CNT-assembled architectures by modulating the corresponding MOFs, which further homogeneously incorporate heteroatoms into the CNTs. Specifically, nitrogen-doped CNT-assembled hollow structures exhibit excellent performances in both energy conversion and storage. On the basis of experimental analyses and density functional theory simulations, these superior performances are attributed to synergistic effects between ideal components and multilevel structures. Additionally, the appropriate graphitic N doping and the confined metal nanoparticles in CNTs both increase the densities of states near the Fermi level and reduce the work function, hence efficiently enhancing its oxygen reduction activity. The viable synthetic strategy and proposed mechanism will stimulate the rapid development of CNTs in frontier fields.

Abstract:Optimizing Carbon Nanotubes Shorter carbon nanotubes are easier to make, but, when assembled into fibers, the resulting fiber properties are much poorer than might be predicted by theory. Conversely, longer carbon nanotubes have much better properties but are harder to process. Behabtu et al. (p. 182 ) combined the best of both worlds through scalable wet spinning method, in which they dissolved longer carbon nanotubes and then spun them into fibers that showed excellent strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity.
