Abstract:In this work, using biomass polydopamine (PDA) as an intermediate interface, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), PDA, and ZIF-67 were combined into a ternary inorganic-organic hybrid flame retardant (A@P-Z). Compared with the flame retardant system composed of a physical mixture of APP and ZIF-67, the hybrid flame retardant not only strengthened the mechanical properties of RPUF composites owing to its good compatibility but also emerged with low total heat release, low total smoke production, and low peak CO production rate in cone calorimetry tests. RPUF/A@P-Z passed the UL-94 V-0 rating, which presented high flame-retardant efficiency of inorganic-organic hybrid flame retardants and industrial application value of the composites. Due to the contribution of synergistic catalysis, the residual char of RPUF/A@P-Z showed high graphitization and high -quality char composition in a rich, rigid structure, which produced an outstanding charring effect and barrier effect. The hybrid flame retardant also produced an impressive flame inhibition effect in the gas phase, inhibiting the production of organic fragments and releasing phosphorus-containing and nitrogen-containing gaseous compounds with free radical quenching and diluting effects. This work provides a new and efficient way to prepare high-performance RPUF composites using inorganic-organic hybrid flame retardants.

Abstract:In recent years, flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has once again captured the scholars' attention due to the growing the growing demands in the field of building energy efficiency. However, the inherent flammability of RPUF is high and the complexities of its flame-retardant mechanisms remain inadequately understood. In this study, a modified biomass material, amino starch phosphate ester was successfully synthesized which was then combined with expandable graphite (EG) and incorporated into RPUF. The research delved into the optimal ratio and minimal flame-retardant additive required to achieve the stringent UL-94 V-0 rating, while also thoroughly investigating the flame retardancy and thermal properties of the composite system. The findings revealed that with just 6 wt.% of flame retardants, the RPUF achieved the UL-94 V-0 rating, with a 41.1% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 23.7% decrease in total heat release (THR). Additionally, it diminishes the flame's size and width, leading to quicker extinction, while also lowering the internal combustion temperature of the polyurethane, thereby delaying both preheating and combustion times. The synergistic interaction between amino starch phosphate ester and EG during combustion results in the formation of a dense, continuous char layer, effectively inhibiting the pyrolysis and combustion of RPUF. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the development of efficient flame-retardant systems for RPUF.

Abstract:Bio-based polyurethane foam has attracted increasing attentions due to eco-friendliness and fossil feedstock issues. However, the inherent flammability limits its application in different fields. Herein, we demonstrate a green bio-based flame-retardant system to fabricate polyurethane foam composite with durable flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and thermal insulation property. In this system, the green bio-based polyol (VED) with good reactivity and compatibility plays a role of flame retardant and EG acts as a synergistic filler. As a result, the LOI value of foam composite increased to 30.5 vol.% and it achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 vertical burning test. Additionally, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total smoke production (TSP) decreased by 66.1% and 63.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the foam composite maintained durable flame retardancy after accelerated thermal aging test, whose thermal-insulating property was maintained even after being treated in high-humidity environment with 85% R.H. for a week. This work provides a facile strategy for durable flame retardancy and long-term thermal insulation performance, and creates opportunities for the practical applications of bio-based foam composites. Abstract:Flame retardant mechanism of DMMP/EG in lignin‐based RPUF composites The enhancement of flame resistance and mechanical strength is critical for the utilization of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites. In this study, the efficient synergistic flame‐retardant system, incorporating dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and expandable graphite (EG), with the addition of refined alkali lignin (A‐lignin) were aimed to superior fire resistance and mechanical integrity for RPUF. Furthermore, the flame retardancy and charring ability of obtained RPUF were obviously enhanced. Notably, an RPUF mixture containing A‐lignin, DMMP, and EG demonstrated substantial charring at elevated temperatures, improved limiting oxygen index, and met the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Cone calorimeter test indicated that this formulation produces less heat and smoke than pure RPUF. The flame‐retardant efficacy of obtained RPUF was attributed to the formation of a protective char layer coupled with the free radical neutralization properties of DMMP, collectively enhancing the flame retardancy obtained RPUF. Additionally, this RPUF variant showed significant advancements in both mechanical and thermal performance. This study outlines a successful strategy for developing RPUF composites endowed with enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical strengths.

Abstract:Rigid polyurethane foam (PU), one of themost promisingwall insulationmaterials, exhibits high flammability and fire risk. In this work, PU/EG/HQ composites with highly effective flame retardancy were fabricated by adding two kinds of flame retardants, expandable graphite (EG) and 10-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10-hydro-9oxa-10-phosphorylphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO-HQ), during the synthesis of polyurethane. Thermal stability and flammability were evaluated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 vertical flame results, and cone colorimeter tests. The as-synthesized PU/EG/HQ composites showed a high LOI value, a maximum peak heat release rate (PHRR) value which was decreased by 58.5% and an increased char yield at 800 C. They also achieved UL-94 V-0 classification. SEM and Raman spectra indicated that the “worm-like” intumescent char layer with a graphitized structure and the formed viscous liquid film were vital factors in the enhancement of the flame retardancy of polyurethane foam in the condensed phase. TG-IR results show that the release of toxic volatiles and flammable gases from the PU/EG/HQ samples was remarkably decreased compared with the release from pure PU. This work associates a gas–solid biphase flame retardancy mechanism with the incorporation of two types of flame retardant and presents an effective method for the synthesis of bi-phase flame-retardant polymers.

Abstract:How to ensure the fire safety of rigid polyurethane (RPU) insulation materials remains a challenge. Herein, alkali lignin (AL) and 4,4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) were used as raw materials to construct bio-based cross-linked polyurethane structures on the surface of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to obtain APP@AL flame retardants. APP@AL was combined with expandable graphite (EG) in varying proportions and applied to rigid polyurethane (RPU) foam to modify its flame retardancy and physico-mechanical characteristics. Compared with untreated RPU, the high interfacial compatibility increased the compressive strength of the flame-retardant RPUs by 10.8 %, and the thermal insulation coefficient reached 22.8 mW center dot m(-1)center dot K-1. The addition of flame retardant for each flame-retardant RPU was 30 wt% of the polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate. Owing to the P/C/O hybridized char layer in the combustion residues and the capture of gas by EG after expansion, APP@AL/EG not only reached the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 27.1 % but reduced the mean heat release rate and smoke release rate by 70.3 % and 58.9 %, respectively. This work presented a novel approach to designing environmentally friendly flame retardants for RPU foams with enhanced fire safety and superior overall performance. Additionally, it offers a novel strategy for the high-value conversion of lignin.

Abstract:Endowing rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) with a good fire-retardancy is essential for improving fire safety. Chemical improvement in fire-retardancy by using reactive-type flame retardants is better because of the disadvantages of traditional additive-type flame retardants. A reactive flame retardant triglycidyl phosphate (POG), which was synthesized by using phosphorus oxychloride and glycidol, was bound to the cross-linked network structure of PUF. The effects of POG on the physical-mechanical properties, morphology, thermal stability and fire-retardancy of PUF system were systematically investigated. Research results showed that POG resulted in an improvement in the thermal insulation ability and a slight decrease in the compressive strength of PUF. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis certified that the thermal stability and the char yield at 700 degrees C of PUF were significantly enhanced by incorporating POG. The limiting oxygen index increased to 22.3% with rising loading of POG. Moreover, a 30.2% decline in total heat release was achieved, the time to flameout was significantly shortened. Additionally, the vertical burning test illustrated that POG effectively limited the spread of flame and eliminated melt dripping. Further study confirmed that the fire-retardancy of PUF was significantly improved by inhibiting flame in the gas phase and charring in condensed phase. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The amplified employment of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has accentuated the importance of its flame-retardant properties in stimulating demand. Thus, a compelling research report is essential to scrutinize the recent progression in the field of the flame retardancy and smoke toxicity reduction of RPUF. This comprehensive analysis delves into the conventional and innovative trends in flame-retardant (FR) systems, comprising reactive-type FRs, additive-type FRs, inorganic nanoparticles, and protective coatings for flame resistance, and summarizes their impacts on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and smoke toxicity suppression of the resultant foams. Nevertheless, there are still several challenges that require attention, such as the migration of additives, the insufficient interfacial compatibility between flame-retardant polyols or flame retardants and the RPUF matrix, and the complexity of achieving both flame retardancy and mechanical properties simultaneously. Moreover, future research should focus on utilizing functionalized precursors and developing biodegradable RPUF to promote sustainability and to expand the applications of polyurethane foam.

Environmentally Friendly Flame-Retardant and Its Application in Rigid Polyurethane Foam

Abstract:A novel Flame-Retardant N-(P,P′-diphenyl) phosphorus-based-(3-triethoxysilicon) propylamine (DPTP) was synthesized in this study. The impact of DPTP on the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) was studied. The addition of DPTP to RPUF can significantly reduce the undesirable thermal effects and smoke density during combustion, as well as increasing the limiting oxygen index. Compared with pure RPUF, the peak heat release rate of RPUF containing 10 phr of DPTP decreased by 39.4%, while its peak smoke production rate decreased by 49.9%. However, it was also found that the addition of DPTP reduced the compressive strength of RPUF.

Abstract:Biomass phytic acid has potential flame retardant value as the main form of phosphorus in plant seeds. In this study, phytate-based flame retardants aluminum phytate (PA-Al) and iron phytate (PA-Fe) were synthesized and characterized. Subsequently, they were introduced into rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) as flame retardants by one-step water-blown method. The results indicated that RPUF/PA-Fe30 exhibited the highest char residue of 22.1 wt%, significantly higher than 12.4 wt% of RPUF. Cone calorimetry analysis showed that the total heat release (THR) of RPUF/PA-Al30 decreased by 17.0% and total smoke release (TSR) decreased by 22.0% compared with pure RPUF, which were the lowest, demonstrating a low fire risk and good smoke suppression. Thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR) implied the release intensity of flammable gases (hydrocarbons, esters) and toxic gases (isocyanate, CO, aromatic compounds, HCN) of composites was significantly reduced after the addition of PA-Fe. The analysis of char residue indicated that the RPUF composites formed a dense char layer with a high degree of graphitization after the addition of PA-Al/PA-Fe, endowing RPUF composites with excellent mass & heat transmission inhibition effect and fire resistance in the combustion process.

Abstract:AbstractThe flame‐retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites are fabricated by ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with pentaerythritol phosphate (PEPA), phenoxycycloposphazene (PCP), and aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP), respectively, which are labeled as RPUF‐1, RPUF‐2, and RPUF‐3. The influence of flame retardants on the apparent density and compressive strength of RPUF is studied. The results reveal that flame retardants not only improve the apparent density, but also improve the compressive strength of RPUF composites. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) results reveal that these inorganic/organic phosphorus‐based flame retardants improve the LOI significantly, especially for RPUF‐2 and RPUF‐3 systems. The cone calorimeter test results suggest that the peak of heat release of RPUF‐1, RPUF‐2, and RPUF‐3 systems decrease by 38%, 41%, and 52% likened to that of pure RPUF. And APP and ADP system performs best in declining the heat release. And APP and PEPA systems perform best in decreasing the smoke release. The flame retardancy mechanism of RPUF composites is analyzed in details.
Thermal and Combustion Properties of Biomass-Based Flame-Retardant Polyurethane Foams Containing P and N

Abstract:Biomass has been widely used due to its environmental friendliness, sustainability, and low toxicity. In this study, aminophosphorylated cellulose (PNC), a biomass flame retardant containing phosphorus and nitrogen, was synthesized by esterification from cellulose and introduced into polyurethane to prepare flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam. The combustion properties of the PU and PU/PNC composites were studied using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, and cone calorimeter (CCT) methods. The thermal degradation behavior of the PU and PU/PNC composites was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetric infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR). The char layer after combustion was characterized using SEM, Raman, and XPS. The experimental results showed that the introduction of PNC significantly improved the flame-retardant effect and safety of PU/PNC composites. Adding 15 wt% PNC to PU resulted in a vertical burning grade of V-0 and a limiting oxygen index of 23.5%. Compared to the pure sample, the residual char content of PU/PNC15 in a nitrogen atmosphere increased by 181%, and the total heat release (THR) decreased by 56.3%. A Raman analysis of the char layer after CCT combustion revealed that the ID/IG ratio of PU/PNC15 decreased from 4.11 to 3.61, indicating that the flame retardant could increase the stability of the char layer. The TG-IR results showed that PNC diluted the concentration of O2 and combustible gases by releasing inert gases such as CO2. These findings suggest that the developed PU/PNC composites have significant potential for real-world applications, particularly in industries requiring enhanced fire safety, such as construction, transportation, and electronics. The use of PNC provides an eco-friendly alternative to traditional flame retardants. This research paves the way for the development of safer, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly fire-resistant materials for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:<p>Polysiloxane flame retardants have been widely studied because of their high heat resistance and nontoxicity. The flame retardant efficiency may be further improved by inhibiting the release of cyclic siloxanes during combustion. In this study, a novel flame retardant was synthesised by imidisation of an amino-polysiloxane using biorenewable resource-maleopimaric acid (MPA). The MPA inhibits the conversion of polysiloxane to cyclic siloxane, thereby enhancing thermal stability. The synthesised flame retardant was employed as a part of the soft segment to produce rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) by a "one-pot" process. The rigid MPA and imide groups inhibit the "back-bite" of polysiloxane and promote the formation of a silica-rich hybrid char layer on the backbone of RPUF to reduce flammability. Compared with pure RPUF, the minimum oxygen concentration necessary to support the combustion of modified foam increased by 39.7%, and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of modified RPUF decreased by more than 50%. Simultaneously, the imide groups and the rigid hydrogenated phenanthrene ring of MPA improved the compressive strength of polysiloxane-modified RPUF. The technique to synthesise a highly effective polysiloxane flame retardant for RPUF is given herein.</p>

Bio-Based Alkali Lignin Cooperative Systems for Improving the Flame Retardant and Mechanical Properties of Rigid Polyurethane Foam

Abstract:Lignin was utilized as an environmentally friendly synergistic agent to augment the fire resistance and mechanical characteristics of rigid polyurethane foam (PUF)/melamine-formaldehyde resin ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP). The incorporation of lignin significantly enhanced the charring capability and flame retardancy of PUF/MFAPP. Specifically, PUF/MFAPP12/A-lignin3 exhibited a charring residue of 23.1% at 800 °C, accompanied by an increase in the limiting oxygen index (LOI) to 23.1%, resulting in a UL-94 V-0 rating. The cone calorimeter test (CCT) revealed that the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), smoke production rate (SPR), and total smoke production (TSP) values of PUF/MFAPP12/A-lignin3 were all lower than for pure PUF. MFAPP and alkali lignin exerted a noticeable influence on the physical and mechanical properties, leading to increases in density (35.4 kg/m3), thermal conductivity (32.68 mW/(m·K)), and compressive strength (160.5 kPa). Observations of the morphology and elemental composition of char residues after combustion indicated the formation of an intact, thick, and continuous char layer enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus elements, which acted as a protective shield for the underlying foam.
Expandable Graphite‐methyl Methacrylate‐acrylic Acid Copolymer Composite Particles As a Flame Retardant of Rigid Polyurethane Foam

Abstract:An emulsion polymerization method was employed to prepare pulverized expandable graphite (pEG)-poly(methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) copolymer [(PMA)] composite particles, and then the pEG-P(MA) particles were used for a flame retardant of the rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy data demonstrated the existence of P(MA) in the pEG-P(MA) particles, and the result of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the content of P(MA) was 24.3 wt %. Morphological observation showed that the pEG particles were encapsulated by a layer of polymer coating to form typical core-shell composite particles. Due to the possible reaction between -COOH of pEG-P(MA) and R-CNO of isocyanate, the compatibility between the composite particles and the RPUF matrix was highly enhanced. In contrast to the pEG, the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the horizontal and vertical burning tests showed the pEG-P(MA) composite particles could improve the flame retardancy effectively. The improved flame retardancy of the RPUF matrix was attributed to the increased expansion volume ratio of pEG-P(MA) particles as exposed to fire. The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the incorporation of the core-shell particles could improve the storage modulus and tan delta of the RPUF composites. Highly-efficient Reinforcement and Flame Retardancy of Rigid Polyurethane Foam with Phosphorus-Containing Additive and Nitrogen-Containing Compound

Abstract:Flame retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) with a reactive melamine-derived polyol (MADP) and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) were fabricated through free-rise technique. The thermal stability and fire behaviors of RPUF were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimeter. In comparison with the results of RPUF and RPUF/MADP, RPUF/MADP-DOPO displayed higher compressive strength, owing to the two stiff phenyl groups of DOPO. Moreover, with only 7.5 wt % MADP and 7.5 wt % DOPO loading, the MADP/DOPO system endowed RPUF with enhanced char formation, increased LOI value of 28.5% and reduced heat release. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and Raman spectra of the char residues suggested that the formation of compact, continuous char layer. The thermal degradation was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis infrared spectrometry (TG-IR) and chemical structure changes during the thermal degradation were monitored by real time Fourier transform infrared (RT-FTIR), these results demonstrated that the partial phosphorus from DOPO remained in the residual char, but the introduction of MADP significantly promoted generating more stable aromatic structure and enhanced the strength of the char layer formed. Furthermore, MADP facilitated the formation of more H2O and CO2 and diluted the flammable gases in gaseous phase. Based on the analysis, the introduction of MADP/DOPO can endowed excellent flame retardancy to RPUF depending on bi-phase flame-retardant mechanism. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Enhancing the Fire Safety and Smoke Safety of Bio–Based Rigid Polyurethane Foam Via Inserting a Reactive Flame Retardant Containing P@N and Blending Silica Aerogel Powder

Abstract:Rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) are widely used in many fields, but they are easy to burn and produce a lot of smoke, which seriously endangers the safety of people’s lives and property. In this study, tetraethyl(1,5–bis(bis(2–hydroxypropyl)amino)pentane–1,5–diyl)bis(phosphonate) (TBPBP), as a phosphorus–nitrogen–containing reactive–type flame retardant, was successfully synthesized and employed to enhance the flame retardancy of RPUFs, and silica aerogel (SA) powder was utilized to reduce harmful fumes. Castor oil–based rigid polyurethane foam containing SA powder and TBPBP was named RPUF–T45@SA20. Compared with neat RPUF, the obtained RPUF–T45@SA20 greatly improved with the compressive strength properties and the LOI value increased by 93.64% and 44.27%, respectively, and reached the V–0 rank of UL–94 testing. The total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) of RPUF–T45@SA20 were, respectively, reduced by 44.66% and 51.89% compared to those of the neat RPUF. A possible flame–retardant mechanism of RPUF–T45@SA20 was also proposed. This study suggested that RPUF incorporated with TBPBP and SA powder is a prosperous potential composite for fire and smoke safety as a building insulation material.
Engineering Sulfur-Containing Polymeric Fire-Retardant Coatings for Fire-Safe Rigid Polyurethane Foam

Abstract:With the advantages of lightweight and low thermal conductivity properties, polymeric foams are widely employed as thermal insulation materials for energy-saving buildings but suffer from inherent flammability. Flame-retardant coatings hold great promise for improving the fire safety of these foams without deteriorating the mechanical-physical properties of the foam. In this work, four kinds of sulfur-based flame-retardant copolymers are synthesized via a facile radical copolymerization. The sulfur-containing monomers serve as flame-retardant agents including vinyl sulfonic acid sodium (SPS), ethylene sulfonic acid sodium (VS), and sodium p-styrene sulfonate (VSS). Additionally, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate are employed to enable a strong interface adhesion with polymeric foams through interfacial H-bonding. By using as-synthesized waterborne flame-retardant polymeric coating with a thickness of 600 µm, the coated polyurethane foam (PUF) can achieve a desired V-0 rating during the vertical burning test with a high limiting oxygen index (LOI) of >31.5 vol%. By comparing these sulfur-containing polymeric fire-retardant coatings, poly(VS-co-HEA) coated PUF demonstrates the best interface adhesion capability and flame-retardant performance, with the lowest peak heat release rate of 166 kW m-2 and the highest LOI of 36.4 vol%. This work provides new avenues for the design and performance optimization of advanced fire-retardant polymeric coatings.
