Abstract:Flame retardant mechanism of DMMP/EG in lignin‐based RPUF composites The enhancement of flame resistance and mechanical strength is critical for the utilization of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites. In this study, the efficient synergistic flame‐retardant system, incorporating dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and expandable graphite (EG), with the addition of refined alkali lignin (A‐lignin) were aimed to superior fire resistance and mechanical integrity for RPUF. Furthermore, the flame retardancy and charring ability of obtained RPUF were obviously enhanced. Notably, an RPUF mixture containing A‐lignin, DMMP, and EG demonstrated substantial charring at elevated temperatures, improved limiting oxygen index, and met the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Cone calorimeter test indicated that this formulation produces less heat and smoke than pure RPUF. The flame‐retardant efficacy of obtained RPUF was attributed to the formation of a protective char layer coupled with the free radical neutralization properties of DMMP, collectively enhancing the flame retardancy obtained RPUF. Additionally, this RPUF variant showed significant advancements in both mechanical and thermal performance. This study outlines a successful strategy for developing RPUF composites endowed with enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical strengths.

Abstract:Halogen-free flame retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) were synthesized by substituting a part of polyther polyol with polyol-modified lignin and filled with phenolic encapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (PFAPP). Lignin was chemically modified with flame retardant elements, phosphorous, via a three-step reaction. The foams maintained a regular cell structure and had even smaller average cell size than pure foam. The effects of lignin polyol and PFAPP on the apparent density, compressive strength were discussed. The thermal stability, flame retardant properties and mechanical properties of the foams are improved. Compared with pure foam (0.2 % char residue at 700 °C), modified foam with lignin and PFAPP exhibits much higher char formation (42.7 % char residue at 700 °C). The FR properties of these modified foams were evaluated by cone calorimeter and limiting oxygen index (LOI). The modified lignin in foam system further reduces the heat release rate and shows the combustion process. The addition of 15 % PFAPP and 10 % modified lignin into RPUF led to a considerable increase of the compressive strength with respect to the neat RPUF.

Abstract:The polyurethane (PU) foams can be functionally tailored by modifying the formulation with different additives. One such additive is melamine (MA) formaldehyde resin for improving their flame-retardant properties. In this work, the glycerol-modified (GMF), sodium alginate (SGMF)- and lignosulfonate-modified melamine formaldehyde (LGMF) were prepared and used as flame retardants reacting with isocyanate to prepare the corresponding rigid polyurethane foams (GMF-PU, SGMF-PU and LGMF-PU). The thermomechanical properties and flame-retardant properties of the foams were characterized. The results showed that the specific compression strength of GMF-PU, SGMF-PU and LGMF-PU increased substantially compared to the foams from physical addition of MA, sodium alginate and lignosulfonate, all of which were greater than that of the foam without any flame retardant (PPU). Meanwhile, the cell wall of the foam pores became thicker and the closed pore ratio increased. The sodium alginate and lignosulfonate played a key role in enhancing foam thermal stability. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) values and cone calorimetry results indicated the flame-retardant efficiency of GMF-PU, SGMF-PU and LGMF-PU significantly enhanced relative to PPU. Meanwhile, the heat and smoke release results indicated sodium alginate and lignosulfonate could reduce the amount of smoke generation to different degrees during the combustion of the foam.

Abstract:The flame retardancy propertities of bamboo kraft lignin‐based polyuretnane foam. In order to improve the efficiency of intumescent flame retardant (IFR), bamboo kraft lignin (BKL) was chemically functionalized by grafting melamine (MEL) and diethyl phosphite (DEP) and used for rigid polyurethane (RPU) foam. The BKL, MEL, and DEP in IFR system were used as char forming agent, gas, and acid source, respectively. The FTIR and XPS results indicated that the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) containing BKL was successfully synthesized. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of N‐BKL and N/P‐BKL RPU foams were higher than BKL RPU foam, suggesting that N‐BKL and N/P‐BKL improved flame retardancy of the foams. The total heat release (THR), heat release rate (HRR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), and fire growth rate (FIGRA) values of N‐BKL and N/P‐BKL RPU foams were much lower than that of BKL RPU foam. The flame retardancy index value of N/P‐BKL RPU foams was higher comparing to N‐BKL RPU foam. These results indicated that the synergistic interaction between N containing compound of MEL and P containing compound of DEP led to the improvement flame retardant properties. Comparing to BKL RPU foam, the N/P‐BKL RPU foam increased 74°C of maximum weight loss temperature and decreased 18.1 wt% of mass loss, indicating enhanced thermal stability. The morphology of char after cone calorimeter testing showed the N/P‐BKL RPU foam presented more continuous and compact char residues, which could reduce heat and mass transfer, protecting underlying materials from further combustion in a fire, thus resulting in good flame retardancy and thermal stability properties. This work suggests a promising route to enhancing the flame‐retardant performance of RPU foam using nontoxic and more environmentally friendly grafted bamboo lignin.

Abstract:Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has attracted a lot of attention as a multifunctional material. However, the use of fossil fuels in various fields is limited due to their flammability and excessive consumption in the preparation process. In order to solve this problem, a sustainable bio-based RPUF was prepared by ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and lignin-based polyol flame retardant modification. The impact of APP on the smoke characteristics, flame retardancy, and thermal behavior of lignin-based polyol RPUFs was examined. The modified RPUF (RPUF-20) with 20 wt% APP had the greatest starting temperature and residual rate. The maximum activation energy (E) and best thermal stability were found in the pyrolysis kinetics calculation utilizing the TG trajectory compared to other specimens. Cone showed that when RPUF-20 was compared to RPUF-0, the peak heat release rate was lowered by 79.43%, 72.79%, and 67.91%, and the total heat release was reduced by 50.59%, 56.29%, and 37.14%, respectively. In the meanwhile, RPUF-20 had the lowest smoke density, according to the statistics. The current results showed that RPUF-20 had low smoke toxicity and outstanding flame retardancy, which gave rise to a novel notion for RPUF's following flame retardant modification using biomass.

Abstract:Intumescent flame retardants (IFR) have been widely used to improve flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane (RPU) foams and the most commonly used char forming agent is pentaerythritol (PER). Lignosulfonate (LS) is a natural macromolecule with substantial aromatic structures and abundant hydroxyl groups, and carbon content higher than PER. The flame retardancy and its mechanism of LS as char forming agent instead of PER in IFR formulation were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index testing and cone calorimeter test. The results showed LS as a char forming agent did not increase the density of RPU/LS foams. LOI value and char residue of RPU/LS foam were higher than RPU/PER and the mass loss of RPU/LS foam decreased 18%, suggesting enhanced thermal stability. CCT results showed LS as a char forming agent in IFR formulation effectively enhanced the flame retardancy of RPU foams with respect to PER. The flame retardancy mechanism showed RPU/LS foam presented a continuous and relatively compact char layer, acting as the effect of the flame retardant and heat insulation between gaseous and condensed phases. The efficiency of different LS ratio in IFR formulation as char forming agent was different, and the best flame retardancy and thermal stability was obtained at RPU/LS1.

Abstract:With the emergence of new standards for fire prevention, phenolic foam has attracted increasing attention due to its satisfactory cleanliness and flame retardancy. With the increasing exhaustion of fossil energy and environmental problems, finding renewable energy sources to replace petroleum-derived phenol has become a new research hotspot. Lignin is an ideal renewable resource, which can be used to partially replace phenol in phenolic foam due to its structural similarity to petroleum phenolic compounds. In this paper, lignin sulfate was used as a raw material, an aldehyde group was introduced from an external source, and on this basis, nitrogen and phosphorus modification was carried out to prepare lignin-based flame retardants, which were used to replace phenol in the production of phenolic foam. The nitrogen and phosphorus modification was conducted to prepare the lignin-based flame retardants. It was found that when the amount of flame retardant replaced was 5–20%, the compressive strength of the modified phenolic foam was better than that of pure phenolic foam. The LOI of the modified phenolic foam also improved significantly (to about 59.6%). In addition, the heat release rate, total heat release and total smoke release of the modified phenolic foam decreased obviously. This paper provides an effective method for lignin utilization to prepare bio-based phenolic foams with improved flame retardancy and mechanical properties.

Abstract:A novel lignin-based flame retardant (LMD) is synthesized in this work via the in-situ reactions of lignin, diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO). Flame-retardant polyurethane (FLPU) is prepared by the co-curing of LMD and prepolymer synthesized by lignin, MDI, and polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG 2000 is used to adjust the flexibility of the polyurethane (PU). The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of the FLPU gradually increases with the rise of LMD content and can reach 29.9% for F30-L20-L15-80PU (L20MD content was 30% in L15-80PU), exhibiting excellent flame-retardant properties. The hardness of the FLPU for the optimized formulation is 2H, the adhesion is 0, and the flexibility is 2 mm. Impact resistance is greater than 100 cm/1000 g. These outstanding properties illustrate the LMD as excellent flame retardants and reinforcing materials for LPU. The interface can be strengthened by the co-curing between the LMD and the LPU prepolymer.

Abstract:The main aim of this work was to investigate the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) on the flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs). A series of flame retardant RPUF containing EG and AHP were prepared by one‐shot and free‐rise method. The flame retardant, thermal degradation, and combustion properties of RPUF hybrids were characterized through limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning (UL‐94) test, thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimeter. The LOI and UL‐94 results showed that the RPUF sample with 10 wt% EG and 5 wt% AHP passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating and reached a relatively high LOI value of 28.5%, which is superior over other EG/AHP ratios in RPUF at the equivalent filler loading. Microscale combustion calorimeter results revealed that the incorporation of EG and AHP into RPUF reduced the peak heat release rate and total heat release, thus decrease the fire risk of RPUF significantly. Incorporation of EG and AHP improved the thermal stability of RPUF as observed from the thermogravimetric analysis results and also enhanced the thermal resistance of char layer at high temperature from scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, it could be seen from thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry spectra that the addition of EG and AHP significantly decreased the combustible gaseous products such as hydrocarbons and ethers. Synthesis of a reactive lignin-based flame retardant and its application in phenolic foam

Abstract:To improve the flame retardancy of phenolic foam from the perspective of sustainable development, it is a feasible way to add bio-based flame retardants into phenolic foam. Lignin has a similar structure to phenol, which provides a possibility to replace part of phenol. In this paper, we prepared a kind of reactive bio-based flame retardant based on enzymatic hydrolyzed lignin, in which side chain was chemically grafted with phosphorus and nitrogen and benzene ring would participate in the phenolic condensation reaction. According to elemental analysis and ICP-OES data, the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in modified lignin (NP-L) increased to 2.95% and 3.55% respectively. Compared with original lignin, the carbon residue rate of NP-L increased from 3.25% to 12.13% because of the presence of flame retardant elements N and P. Then lignin-based flame retardant was used to replace phenol for modifying phenolic foams (NPLPFX). The limited oxygen index (LOI) and compressive strength of phenolic foam were improved effectively by adding modified lignin when the substitution rate was less than 25%. The LOI and compressive strength of the modified phenolic foam with 5% replacement amount (NPLPF5) are 55.6% and 0.24 MPa, which increased by 88% and 60% compared with pure phenolic foam. The cone calorimetric data also showed that NPLPF5 had good flame retardancy, and the peak heat release rate and total heat release were significantly lower than PF. This work suggests a novel green strategy for improving the flame retardancy performance of phenolic foam and promoting the utilization of lignin. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:In order to explore highly efficient flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and expandable graphite (EG) were successfully incorporated into RPUF by a free one-spot method. The combustion results showed that the fire safety of the RPUF samples was remarkably improved by the addition of phosphoric/nitrogen compounds and EG. With the incorporation of 22.4 wt.% phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and 3.2 wt.% EG, the RPUF composites achieved UL-94 V-0 rating. Besides, the total heat release and total smoke release of RPUF composites were reduced by 29.6% and 32.4% respectively, compared to those of the pure RPUF sample. PO• and PO2• together with nonflammable gaseous products were evolved from phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the gas phase, which quenched the flammable free radicals in the matrix and diluted the concentration of combustible gaseous products generated from PRUF during combustion. The compact char residues which acted as excellent physical barriers were formed by catalysis of EG and phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the condense phase. The fire hazard of RPUF was significantly reduced by the synergistic effect of phosphorus-nitrogen compounds and EG. This work provides a promising strategy to enhance the fire safety of RPUF.

Abstract:In this study, two different types of industrial lignin (i.e., lignosulphonate lignin (LL) and kraft lignin (DL)) were exploited as charring agents with phosphorus-based flame retardants for polyamide 11 (PA11). The effect of lignins on the thermal stability and fire behavior of PA11 combined with phosphinate additives (namely, aluminum phosphinate (AlP) and zinc phosphinate (ZnP)) has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL 94 vertical flame spread, and cone calorimetry tests. Various blends of flame retarded PA11 were prepared by melt process using a twin-screw extruder. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that the LL containing ternary blends are able to provide higher thermal stability, as well as a developed char residue. The decomposition of the phosphinates led to the formation of phosphate compounds in the condensed phase, which promotes the formation of a stable char. Flammability tests showed that LL/ZnP ternary blends were able to achieve self-extinction and V-1 classification; the other formulations showed a strong melt dripping and higher burning. In addition to this, cone calorimetry results showed that the most enhanced behavior was found when 10 wt % of LL and AlP were combined, which strongly reduced PHRR (−74%) and THR (−22%), due to the interaction between LL and AlP, which not only promotes char formation but also confers the stability to char in the condensed phase.

Abstract:The self‐assembled lignin‐based flame retardant LMA was further grafted with γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to obtain a novel type of silicon‐containing intumescent flame retardant (LK). LK exhibits outstanding flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties. Moreover, the lignin flame retardancy composite, fabricated after combining LK with single component lignin, demonstrates favorable mechanical strength as well as flame retardancy. In this work, the self‐assembled lignin‐based flame retardant (LMA) was grafted with γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to obtain a novel type of silicon‐containing intumescent flame retardant (LK), which can be applied on polypropylene (PP) to obtain flame retardant PP (PP‐LK). Furthermore, low cost flame retardant PP biocomposite (PP/M/L) with high lignin content were prepared by compounding lignin, LK and PP. The developed PP‐LK and PP/M/L exhibited significant excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression and mechanical properties. In particular, the UL‐94 test achieved V‐0, and the limit oxygen index (LOI) increased from 17.9% of PP to 28.3% of PP‐LK, and 27.2% of PP/M/L, respectively. Meanwhile, tensile strength and Young's modulus increased by 6.3% and 19.64% for PP‐LK and PP/M/L, respectively. Especially, the tensile strength of PP with 15% LK and 25% lignin achieved 30.88 MPa, and the Young's modulus reached 1415 MPa. The excellent carbonization properties of PP‐LK illustrated that the lignin component of LK had excellent carbonization ability. The prepared LK provided a novel strategy to improve the fire safety and cost of PP, and wide the applications of lignin.

Abstract:A series of flame retarding rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites based on expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) were prepared by the one-pot method. What is more, compared with RPUF/20EG and RPUF/20AHP, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) of RPUF/15EG/5AHP were lower. TGA results indicate that partial substitution of EG with AHP could improve the char residue which provided better flame retardancy for RPUF composites. The thermal degradation process of RPUF composites and the chemical component of the char residue were investigated by RT-FT-IR and XPS. And the results prove that RPUF/15EG/5AHP had higher heat resistance in the later stage. Abstract:In this study, chitosan (CS) from fish waste was used to prepare bio-based environmentally friendly flame retardants. The hydroxyl group (-OH) of CS and the ammonium group (NH 4 + ) of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) formed CS-APP, which was to serve as the core material. Melamine–formaldehyde (MF) resin was synthesized as the shell material through microencapsulation technology with CS-APP to prepare the novel core-shell structured flame retardant, which was subsequently introduced into polyurethane (PU) to prepare the composites. This study employed thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, cone calorimetry tests (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis-FTIR (TGA-FTIR), SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, smoke concentration test and tensile test to characterize the structure, thermal properties, flame retardancy, char analysis and mechanical properties of the composites. The TGA results revealed that after the addition of flame retardant, the char yield increased from 0.5 wt% (pristine PU) to 12.0 wt% (the composite), and the thermal stability of the pristine PU was improved. Furthermore, the LOI increased from 18.2% to 28.4%, and the UL-94 level increased from fail to V-0 for the composites. Abstract:Zinc alginate (ZnAlg) was prepared and subsequently employed to modify ammonium ligninsulfonate-based polyurethane foams (PUFs). A range of analytical techniques, including thermogravimetry, integral programmed decomposition temperature, activation energy, smoke density, cone calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, were employed to characterise the modified PUFs. The results demonstrated that the PUFA15Z5 (15 % ammonium lignin sulfonate and 5 g ZnAlg) with the lowest mass loss exhibited the second-highest sample decomposition temperature (T 50 % ), second-highest peak temperature (T MAX2 ), IPDT and activation energy. Furthermore, the PUFA15Z5 sample exhibited the smallest smoke density (23.11) and the highest light transmittance (67.11 %). The peak heat release rate, total heat release, smoke production rate, total smoke release and four fire risk assessment indicators of the PUFA15Z5 were the lowest, while its carbon residue was the densest. The results demonstrated that the PUFA15Z5 exhibited the most favourable thermal stability, flame retardant properties and the lowest smoke toxicity. These findings provided a valuable reference for subsequent biomass-based flame retardant modified polyurethane foams (PUFs).

Abstract:In this study, flame retardant polyurethane rigid foam was prepared by incorporating 15wt% ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and ionic liquid (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, abbreviated as B 4 F). The flame retardant and thermal stability of the material were evaluated using vertical combustion (UL-94), limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter (CONE), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) tests. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to explore the flame retardancy mechanism in the carbon layer after combustion. The experimental results showed that the addition of 1wt%B 4 F to the flame-retardant polyurethane (RPUF/14APP/1B 4 F) significantly improved the vertical combustion test, upgrading it from the V-1 level to the V-0 level. This improvement was attributed to the increased degree of graphitization of the material, as evidenced by the reduced ratio of amorphous carbon to graphitic carbon (I D /I G ) from 2.68 to 1.38. XPS analysis revealed that RPUF/14APP/1B 4 F exhibited a higher C/O ratio in the residual carbon (3.03) compared to RPUF/15APP (1.84), indicating that B 4 F effectively enhanced the antioxidant properties of the flame-retardant materials. Under the air atmosphere, RPUF/14APP/1B 4 F demonstrated an increased char formation at 800 °C (21.24%), which was 71.01% higher than RPUF/15APP. The interaction between B 4 F and APP led to the formation of a more stable char layer structure in polyurethane, further enhancing its flame retardancy. In conclusion, the RPUF/14APP/1B 4 F demonstrated a synergistic flame retardancy effect and enhanced thermal stability. The addition of B 4 F improved the graphitization degree of the material and increased the C/O ratio in the residual carbon, enhancing the antioxidant properties of the system. Moreover, the interaction between B 4 F and APP promoted the formation of a more stable char layer, effectively improving the flame retardant properties of the polyurethane. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of advanced flame retardant polyurethane materials with improved fire safety in various applications.

Abstract:Biomass melamine phytates (MEL-PA) flame retardant was fabricated by a facile method, and MEL-PA was used to prepare a series of RPUF/MEL-PA composites by one-step water-blown technology. Compared with that of pure RPUF, the degradation rate of RPUF/MEL-PA composites decreased at a high temperature, and the char residues increased significantly, indicating that the thermal stability of the composites is improved. The smoke density test and TG-FTIR revealed that MEL-PA can significantly inhibit the release of smoke, flammable gases (e.g. esters and hydrocarbons) and toxic and harmful gases (e.g. isocyanate compounds, aromatic compounds and CO), implying significant enhancement of the fire safety of RPUF/MEL-PA composites. SEM, Raman spectra and FTIR spectroscopy were employed to investigate char residues of the composites. MEL-PA was found to catalyse the RPUF matrix to form compact char residues with a high graphitisation degree, significantly inhibiting heat and mass transmission processes during combustion.
Bio-Based Polyurethane Foams from Kraft Lignin with Improved Fire Resistance

Abstract:Rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) were synthesized using exclusively lignin-based polyol (LBP) obtained via the oxyalkylation of kraft lignin with propylene carbonate (PC). Using the design of experiments methodology combined with statistical analysis, the formulations were optimized to obtain a bio-based RPUF with low thermal conductivity and low apparent density to be used as a lightweight insulating material. The thermo-mechanical properties of the ensuing foams were compared with those of a commercial RPUF and a RPUF (RPUF-conv) produced using a conventional polyol. The bio-based RPUF obtained using the optimized formulation exhibited low thermal conductivity (0.0289 W/m·K), low density (33.2 kg/m3), and reasonable cell morphology. Although the bio-based RPUF has slightly lower thermo-oxidative stability and mechanical properties than RPUF-conv, it is still suitable for thermal insulation applications. In addition, the fire resistance of this bio-based foam has been improved, with its average heat release rate (HRR) reduced by 18.5% and its burn time extended by 25% compared to RPUF-conv. Overall, this bio-based RPUF has shown potential to replace petroleum-based RPUF as an insulating material. This is the first report regarding the use of 100% unpurified LBP obtained via the oxyalkylation of LignoBoost kraft lignin in the production of RPUFs.

Abstract:Summary diagrams have been annotated. In this work, FR‐PNX, an alkylphosphate oligomer was introduced into rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) to fabricate FR‐PNX/RPUF composites. The flame retardancy, thermal stability, and combustion properties of composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric (TG), microcalorimetry (MCC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), et al. The flame retardancy tests demonstrated that the incorporation of 50 phr of FR‐PNX yielded composites that the highest LOI of 23.6 vol% and achieved a V‐0 rating in the UL‐94 test. TG results indicated that FR‐PNX promoted the decomposition of FR‐RPUF in the process, but enhanced the high‐temperature stability of the composites. MCC analyses revealed that the addition of FR‐PNX suppressed the heat release during combustion, and FR‐PNX50/RPUF exhibited the lowest total heat release of 17.3 MJ/m2, a 35% reduction compared to the pure sample. Moreover, the peak heat release rate was decreased to 83.1 W/g, representing a 46.9% reduction compared to pure RPUF. SEM and Raman analyses of the char residue demonstrated that the incorporation of FR‐PNX facilitated the formation of a dense and continuous char layer in the FR‐RPUF, with increased graphitization degree of the char layer, thereby enhancing the composite's fire resistance through the development of a more stable fire barrier.
