Abstract:In this paper we study abelian varieties which correspond to CM points in the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. These are abelian varieties of even dimension with quaternion and complex multiplication. We describe them explicitly via isogenies to products of abelian varieties of smaller dimension together with estimates on the degree of the isogeny.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = p(x)$ defined over a number field $K$ with $p(x)$ integral of odd degree. The purpose of the present article is to prove lower and upper bounds for the $2$-Selmer group of the Jacobian of $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of the class group of the $K$-algebra $K[x]/(p(x))$. Our main result is a formula relating these two quantities under some mild hypothesis. We provide some examples that prove that our lower and upper bounds are as sharp as possible. As a first application, we study the rank distribution of the $2$-Selmer group in families of quadratic twists. Under some extra hypothesis we prove that among prime quadratic twists, a positive proportion has fixed $2$-Selmer group. As a second application, we study the family of octic twists of the genus $2$ curve $y^2 = x^5 + x$.

Non-vanishing of central $L$-values of the Gross family of elliptic curve

Abstract:We prove non-vanishing theorems for the central values of $L$-series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross elliptic curve with complex multiplication by the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime congruent to $7$ modulo $8$. This completes the non-vanishing theorems proven by Coates and the second author in which the primes $q$ were taken to be congruent to $7$ modulo $16$. From this, we obtain the finiteness of the Mordell-Weil group and the Tate-Shafarevich group for these curves. For a special prime $\mathfrak{P}$ lying above the prime $2$, we also prove a rank zero converse theorem and the $\mathfrak{P}$-part of the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the higher-dimensional abelian varieties obtained by restriction of scalars.

Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded. If $F$ is totally real, we moreover show that a positive proportion of twists have rank 0 and a positive proportion have $3$-Selmer rank 1. These results on bounded average ranks in families of quadratic twists represent new progress towards Goldfeld's conjecture -- which states that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ should be $1/2$ -- and the first progress towards the analogous conjecture over number fields other than $\mathbb{Q}$. Our results follow from a computation of the average size of the $\phi$-Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of an abelian variety admitting a 3-isogeny $\phi$.

Abstract:The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime p=2 to prove non‐vanishing theorems for the value at s=1 of the complex L ‐series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field K=Q(−q) , where q is any prime ≡7mod8 . Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non‐vanishing theorem first proven by Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non‐vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell–Weil group and the Tate–Shafarevich group of the corresponding elliptic curves over the Hilbert class field of K . It is essential for the proofs to study the Iwasawa theory of the higher dimensional abelian variety with complex multiplication which is obtained by taking the restriction of scalars to K of the particular elliptic curve with complex multiplication introduced by Gross.
Monodromy groups of Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field. The connected monodromy field of $A$ is the minimal field over which the images of all the $\ell$-adic torsion representations have connected Zariski closure. We show that for all even $g \geq 4$, there exist infinitely many geometrically nonisogenous abelian varieties $A$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ where the connected monodromy field is strictly larger than the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A$. Our construction arises from explicit families of hyperelliptic Jacobians with definite quaternionic multiplication.

On the signed Selmer groups for motives at non-ordinary primes in $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extensions

Abstract:Generalizing the work of Kobayashi and the second author for elliptic curves with supersingular reduction at the prime $p$, Büyükboduk and Lei constructed multi-signed Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a number field $F$ for more general non-ordinary motives. In particular, their construction applies to abelian varieties over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all the primes of $F$ above $p$. In this article, we scrutinize the case in which $F$ is imaginary quadratic, and prove a control theorem (that generalizes Kim's control theorem for elliptic curves) of multi-signed Selmer groups of non-ordinary motives over the maximal abelian pro-$p$ extension of $F$ that is unramified outside $p$, which is the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $F$. We apply it to derive a sufficient condition when these multi-signed Selmer groups are cotorsion over the corresponding two-variable Iwasawa algebra. Furthermore, we compare the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of multi-signed Selmer groups over the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension for two such representations which are congruent modulo $p$.

Generic models for genus 2 curves with real multiplication

Abstract:Explicit models of families of genus 2 curves with multiplication by $\sqrt D$ are known for $D= 2, 3, 5$. We obtain generic models for genus 2 curves over $\mathbb Q$ with real multiplication in 12 new cases, including all fundamental discriminants $D < 40$. A key step in our proof is to develop an algorithm for minimisation of conic bundles fibred over $\mathbb{P}^2$. We apply this algorithm to simplify the equations for the Mestre conic associated to the generic point on the Hilbert modular surface of fundamental discriminant $D < 100$ computed by Elkies--Kumar.

Abstract:We construct quantizations of multiplicative hypertoric varieties using an algebra of q-difference operators on affine space, where q is a root of unity in C. The quantization defines a matrix bundle (i.e. Azumaya algebra) over the multiplicative hypertoric variety and admits an explicit finite étale splitting. The global sections of this Azumaya algebra is a hypertoric quantum group, and we prove a localization theorem. We introduce a general framework of Frobenius quantum moment maps and their Hamiltonian reductions; our results shed light on an instance of this framework.

Abstract:We describe an algorithm which, on input a genus $2$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ has real multiplication by a quadratic order in which $7$ splits, outputs twists of the Klein quartic curve parametrising elliptic curves whose mod $7$ Galois representations are isomorphic to a sub-representation of the mod $7$ Galois representation attached to $J/\mathbb{Q}$. Applying this algorithm to genus $2$ curves of small conductor in families of Bending and Elkies--Kumar we exhibit a number of genus $2$ Jacobians whose Tate--Shafarevich groups (unconditionally) contain a non-trivial element of order $7$ which is visible in an abelian three-fold.

Abstract:Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra QG to the algebra of Q-endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation acts Q-irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of H^1(C; Q)and with image often a Q-almost simple group.

Abstract:We show that complex multiplication on abelian varieties is equivalent to the existence of a constant rational Kähler metric. We give a sufficient condition for a mirror of an abelian variety of CM-type to be of CM-type as well. We also study the relationship between complex multiplication and rationality of a toroidal lattice vertex algebra.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q) be a quadratic field with prime discriminant - q < -3. Let p be an odd prime which splits in K. In this paper, by generalizing our previous method in Iwasawa theory at the prime 2, we construct a p-adic canonical measure for the abelian varieties B coming from the restriction of scalars to K of quadratic twists of Gross curves. We then prove an elliptic analogue of Iwasawa's theorem for the measure. As an application, we prove some cases of the p-part Buhler-Gross conjecture for B in the same spirit of Rubin.

Abstract:For a given irreducible and monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ of degree $4$, we consider the quadratic twists by square-free integers $q$ of the genus one quartic ${H\, :\, y^2=f(x)}$ \[ H_q \, :\, qy^2=f(x). \] We say that a curve $C$ is everywhere locally soluble (ELS) if it has a solution in $\mathbb{R}$ and in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for every prime $p$ (i.e. if $C(\mathbb{R})\neq \emptyset$ and $C(\mathbb{Q}_p)\neq \emptyset$ for all primes $p$). In this paper, we obtain that \[ L(x) = c_f \frac{x}{(\ln{x})^{m}}+O\left(\frac{x}{(\ln{x})^\alpha}\right) \] for some constants $c_f$, $m$ and $\alpha$ only depending on $f$ such that $m<\alpha \leq 1+m$. Abstract:Let $K = \mathbb Q(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is a prime congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Let $A = A(q)$ denote the Gross curve over the Hilbert class field $H$ of $K$. In this note we use Magma to calculate the values $L(E/H, 1)$ for all such $q$'s up to some reasonable ranges for all primes $q$ congruent to $7$ modulo $8$. All these values are non-zero, and using the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we can calculate hypothetical orders of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ for all such $q$ up to $4831$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$, and suppose that $\mathbb Z[\zeta_n]$ embeds in $\mathrm{End}_{\bar F} A$, for some root of unity $\zeta_n$ of order $n = 3^m$. Assuming that the Galois action on the finite group $A[1-\zeta_n]$ is sufficiently reducible, we bound the average rank of the Mordell--Weil groups $A_d(F)$, as $A_d$ varies through the family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists of $A$. Combining this with the recently proved uniform Mordell--Lang conjecture, we prove near-uniform bounds for the number of rational points in twist families of bicyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x^2)$, as well as in twist families of theta divisors of cyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x)$. Our main technical result is the determination of the average size of a $3$-isogeny Selmer group in a family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists.

Abstract:For any almost-simple group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, we describe the automorphism group of the moduli space of semistable $G$-bundles over a connected smooth projective curve $C$ of genus at least $4$. The result is achieved by studying the singular fibers of the Hitchin fibration. As a byproduct, we provide a description of the irreducible components of two natural closed subsets in the Hitchin basis: the divisor of singular cameral curves and the divisor of singular Hitchin fibers.
