Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = p(x)$ defined over a number field $K$ with $p(x)$ integral of odd degree. The purpose of the present article is to prove lower and upper bounds for the $2$-Selmer group of the Jacobian of $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of the class group of the $K$-algebra $K[x]/(p(x))$. Our main result is a formula relating these two quantities under some mild hypothesis. We provide some examples that prove that our lower and upper bounds are as sharp as possible. As a first application, we study the rank distribution of the $2$-Selmer group in families of quadratic twists. Under some extra hypothesis we prove that among prime quadratic twists, a positive proportion has fixed $2$-Selmer group. As a second application, we study the family of octic twists of the genus $2$ curve $y^2 = x^5 + x$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the estimation of the lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group of the Jacobian variety of hyperelliptic curves. Specifically, the authors study the hyperelliptic curve \(C: y^{2}=p(x)\) defined over the number field \(K\), where \(p(x)\) is a polynomial of odd degree. Their goal is to give the lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group through the class group of the \(K\)-algebra \(K[x]/(p(x))\). ### Main problems 1. **Lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group**: - The authors prove that the dimension of the 2 - Selmer group can be estimated through the class group of \(K[x]/(p(x))\). - The specific formula is as follows: \[ \text{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}\text{Cl}^*(A_K,C)[2]-\sum_{v\mid 2}(r_v - 1-\text{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}(V_v))\leq\text{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}\text{Sel}_2(J)\leq\text{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}\text{Cl}^*(A_K,C)[2]+g[K:\mathbb{Q}] \] where \(\text{Cl}^*(A_K,C)\) is a group between the classical class group and the narrow class group, \(r_v\) is the number of decompositions of \(p(x)\) over \(K_v\), and \(V_v\) is a vector space related to the trace. 2. **Application of quadratic twists**: - The authors study the quadratic twists of hyperelliptic curves and prove that under certain assumptions, there exist quadratic twists of positive density such that their 2 - Selmer groups remain unchanged. 3. **Application of specific families**: - The authors study a specific family of hyperelliptic curves \(C(a):y^{2}=x^{5}+ax\) and give the lower and upper bounds of their 2 - Selmer groups. ### Key results - **Main theorem**: - Theorem 5.15 gives the lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group, and in some cases, these bounds are optimal. - For example, when \(p(x)\) is irreducible over \(K_v\), \(r_v = 1\) and \(V_v=\{0\}\), at this time the difference between the lower and upper bounds is equal to \(g[K:\mathbb{Q}]\). - **Applications**: - The study of quadratic twists shows that under certain conditions, there exist quadratic twists of positive density such that their 2 - Selmer groups remain unchanged. - For the specific family \(C(a):y^{2}=x^{5}+ax\), the authors give the lower and upper bounds of its 2 - Selmer group and discuss the possibilities of its rank. ### Methods - **Local calculations**: - The authors construct elements of the 2 - Selmer group through local calculations, especially calculations on the prime ideals of 2. - These calculations involve the properties of the trace and the structure of the class group. - **Global properties**: - The authors use global properties, especially the relationship between Galois cohomology and the class group, to derive the lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group. ### Conclusions - This paper successfully gives the lower and upper bounds of the 2 - Selmer group of the Jacobian variety of hyperelliptic curves by the method of class groups, and applies them in the cases of specific families and quadratic twists. These results provide a new perspective for understanding the arithmetic properties of hyperelliptic curves.
