Abstract:Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement extensively utilized for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures due to its exceptional handleability and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the clinical application of PMMA bone cement is restricted by its poor bioactivity and excessively high modulus of elasticity. Herein, mineralized small intestinal submucosa (mSIS) was incorporated into PMMA to prepare a partially degradable bone cement (mSIS-PMMA) that provided suitable compressive strength and reduced elastic modulus compared to pure PMMA. The ability of mSIS-PMMA bone cement to promote the attachment, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was shown through cellular experiments carried out in vitro, and an animal osteoporosis model validated its potential to improve osseointegration. Considering these benefits, mSIS-PMMA bone cement shows promising potential as an injectable biomaterial for orthopedic procedures that require bone augmentation.

Abstract:Introduction: Our objective in this study was to prepare a novel type of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement, analyze its material properties, and evaluate its safety and antibacterial efficacy. Methods: A halamine compound methacrylate antibacterial PMMA bone cement containing an N-Cl bond structure was formulated, and its material characterization was determined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and 1 H-NMR. The antibacterial properties of the material were studied using contact bacteriostasis and releasing-type bacteriostasis experiments. Finally, in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility experiments were performed to analyze the toxic effects of the material on mice and embryonic osteoblast precursor cells (MC3T3-E1). Results: Incorporation of the antibacterial methacrylate monomer with the N-halamine compound in the new antibacterial PMMA bone cement significantly increased its contact and releasing-type bacteriostatic performance against Staphylococcus aureus . Notably, at 20% and 25% additions of N-halamine compound, the contact and releasing-type bacteriostasis rates of bone cement samples reached 100% ( p < 0.001). Furthermore, the new antibacterial bone cement containing 5%, 10%, and 15% N-halamine compounds showed good biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo . Conclusion: In this study, we found that the novel antibacterial PMMA bone cement with N-halamine compound methacrylate demonstrated good contact and releasing-type bacteriostatic properties against S. aureus . In particular, bone cement containing a 15% N-halamine monomer exhibited strong antibacterial properties and good in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility.

Abstract:A non-leaching antibacterial bone cement has been developed and evaluated. Chlorine- and bromine-containing furanone derivatives were synthesized and covalently coated onto the surface of zirconia filler particles, followed by mixing into a conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) bone cement. Flexural strength and bacterial viability were used to evaluate the modified cements. Effects of coated antibacterial moiety content, coated zirconia loading and halogen on furanone were investigated. Results showed that the experimental cement showed significant enhanced antibacterial function against bone-associated Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus as well as Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as compared to commercial PMMA cement. The cement also exhibited a comparable flexural strength to and 3-14% higher flexural modulus than commercial PMMA bone cement. Increasing antibacterial moiety content and filler loading significantly enhanced antibacterial activity. Increasing antibacterial moiety content slightly increased both flexural strength and modulus of the modified cement. Increasing filler loading slightly increased flexural strength up to 7% loading and then decreased. The bromine-containing furanone modified cement showed a higher antibacterial activity than its chlorine counterpart. Antibacterial agent leaching tests exhibited that the modified experimental cement showed no leachable antibacterial components to surroundings. Within the limitations of this study, this experimental poly(methyl methacrylate) cement may find potential applications in orthopedics for reducing in-surgical and post-surgical infection after further investigations are conducted.

Abstract:Rationale: Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is one of the most commonly used biomaterials for augmenting/stabilizing osteoporosis-induced vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), such as percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP). However, its clinical applications are limited by its poor performance in high compressive modulus and weak bonding to bone. To address these issues, a bioactive composite bone cement was developed for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, in which mineralized collagen (MC) was incorporated into the PMMA bone cement (MC-PMMA). Methods: The in vitro properties of PMMA and MC-PMMA composite bone cement were determined, including setting time, compressive modulus, adherence, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells. The in vivo properties of both cements were evaluated in an animal study (36 osteoporotic New Zealand female rabbits divided equally between the two bone cement groups; PVP at L5) and a small-scale and short-term clinical study (12 patients in each of the two bone cement groups; follow-up: 2 years). Results: In terms of value for PMMA bone cement, the handling properties of MC-PMMA bone cement were not significantly different. However, both compressive strength and compressive modulus were found to be significantly lower. In the rabbit model study, at 8 and 12 weeks post-surgery, bone regeneration was more significant in MC-PMMA bone cement (cortical bone thickness, osteoblast area, new bone area, and bone ingrowth %; each significantly higher). In the clinical study, at a follow-up of 2 years, both the Visual Analogue Score and Oswestry Disability Index were significantly reduced when MC-PMMA cement was used. Conclusions: MC-PMMA bone cement demonstrated good adaptive mechanical properties and biocompatibility and may be a promising alternative to commercial PMMA bone cements for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures in clinical settings. While the present results for MC-PMMA bone cement are encouraging, further study of this cement is needed to explore its viability as an ideal alternative for use in PVP and BKP.

Abstract:Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement relies on the loaded antibiotic to realize the antibacterial purpose. But the exothermic behavior during setting often makes temperature-sensitive antibiotics inactivated. It is necessary to develop new material candidates to replace antibiotics. In this study, a new quaternary ammonium methacrylate (QAM) monomer called dimethylaminetriclosan methacrylate (DMATCM) was designed by the quaternization between 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and triclosan, then employed as the modifier to explore the feasibility of equipping bone cement with antibacterial activity, and to investigate the variations on the physical and biological performances brought by the substitution ratio of DMATCM to MMA. Results showed that DMATCM opened its C=C bonding to participate in the MMA polymerization, and the quaternary ammonium group helped it to perform broad-spectrum antibacterial property against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. With an increased substitution ratio of DMATCM to MMA, the glass transition temperatures, the maximum exothermic temperatures, and the contact angles of bone cements declined, but the residual monomer contents, the fluid uptakes, and the setting times under Vical indentation increased. Long-term soaking made almost no changes to the weight loss and the mechanical properties of DMATCM-modified cements with lower substitution ratios of 0∼20%, and the activation rather enhanced the strengths of uncured AMBC-4 and AMBC-5 samples. Owing to more DMATCM exposed on the cement surface, the inhibition ring diameter produced by modified cement was improved to a maximum of 28.09 mm, and MC3T3-E1 cells performed the cell viabilities all beyond 70% and healthy adhesion after 72 h co-culturing. Taking all measured properties and ISO standards into account, the antibacterial bone cement under the ratio of 10% performed better, besides its good bactericidal effect, the other properties satisfied the requirements for clinical application.

Abstract:The object of the present study was to Functionalize adhesive system with antibacterial activity without interfering the bonding effect, to kill bacteria residue on cavity and prevent bacteria from colonization on the margins of bonding. The fluorine -containing imidazolium salt antibacterial monomer was synthesized by the combination reaction of 1-chlorododecane and 1-vinylimidazole, and the replacement reaction to introduce fluoride ion. The synthesized intermediate product and final product were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was introduced into the bonding system in the form of organic fluorine, and the release behavior of fluoride ion from the functionalized adhesive was studied. The antibacterial experiment showed that the functionalized adhesive was endowed with good antibacterial property, which realized targeted anti -caries ability. The bond strength test indicated that the functionalization with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer did not affect the bonding performance of the adhesive. These results suggested that adhesive functionalized with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer had potential for reducing the occurrence of clinical secondary caries.
Mechanical, material, and antimicrobial properties of acrylic bone cement impregnated with silver nanoparticles

Abstract:Prosthetic joint infection is one of the most serious complications that can lead to failure of a total joint replacement. Recently, the rise of multidrug resistant bacteria has substantially reduced the efficacy of antibiotics that are typically incorporated into acrylic bone cement. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are an attractive alternative to traditional antibiotics resulting from their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and low bacterial resistance. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to incorporate metallic silver nanoparticles into acrylic bone cement and quantify the effects on the cement's mechanical, material and antimicrobial properties. AgNPs at three loading ratios (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0% wt/wt) were incorporated into a commercial bone cement using a probe sonication technique. The resulting cements demonstrated mechanical and material properties that were not substantially different from the standard cement. Testing against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis using Kirby-Bauer and time-kill assays demonstrated no antimicrobial activity against planktonic bacteria. In contrast, cements modified with AgNPs significantly reduced biofilm formation on the surface of the cement. These results indicate that AgNP-loaded cement is of high potential for use in primary arthroplasty where prevention of bacterial surface colonization is vital.

Abstract:Abstract With the aging of the population, the risk of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) caused by osteoporosis increases rapidly. Surgeons often fill the bone defect with injectable polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement through vertebroplasty. However, compared with cancellous bone, the higher mechanical properties of PMMA bone cement can easily lead to the fracture of the adjacent cone. Besides, the wound infection caused by surgery is also a serious problem. In order to solve these problems, we designed a new type of PMMA bone cement, by adding gelatin as a pore former, 5% (w/w) gentamicin sulfate (GS) for antibacterial purpose, and 30% (w/w) barium sulfate (BaSO 4 ) to provide excellent radiopacity. Compared with the traditional PMMA bone cement, with the dissolution of gelatin after being immersed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) for 14 d, the mechanical properties of modified PMMA bone cement decreased by approximately 67%, which is close to the human cancellous bone. Besides, the release of GS increased 3.8 times, and the GS concentration remained above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for 12 d. In addition, the setting properties, contact angle, antibacterial ability, and cell compatibility of PMMA bone cement also maintained well. The integration and dissolution of gelatin were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All results indicate that the new type of gelatin-modified PMMA bone cement is a potential candidate material for vertebroplasty.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based bone cement has been clinically used extensively in orthopedics for arthroplasty and kyphoplasty, due to its biocompatibility and excellent primary fixation to the host bone. In this focused review, we discuss the use of various fillers and secondary chemical moieties to improve the bioactivity and the physicochemical properties. The viscosity of the PMMA blend formulations and working time are crucial to achieving intimate contact with the osseous tissue, which is highly sensitive to organic or inorganic fillers. Hydroxyapatite as a reinforcement resulted in compromised mechanical properties of the modified cement. The possible mechanisms of the additive- or filler-dependent strengthening or weakening of the PMMA blend are critically reviewed. The addition of layered double hydroxides with surface functionalization appears to be a promising approach to enhance the bonding of filler with the PMMA matrix. Such an approach consequently improves the mechanical properties, owing to enhanced dispersion as well as contributions from crack bridging. Finally, the use of emerging alternatives, such as nanoparticles, and the use of natural biomolecules were highlighted to improve bioactivity and antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Bone cement is one of the materials used in orthopaedics that serves various functions, such as binding bone implants, replacing damaged bones and filling spaces within bones. Various materials have been used to synthesize bone cement, and one promising material for further research is fish bone waste-based bone cement. This study investigates the potential of fish bone waste-based bone cement by incorporating nano fish bone (NFB) and L -arginine ( L -Arg) protein into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to examine apatite growth. NFB derived from the Salmo salar fish positively influences osteoblast cell proliferation and differentiation, while L-Arg enhances biocompatibility and antibiotic properties. The NFB/L-Arg combination holds promise in accelerating new bone formation and cell growth, both of which are crucial for fracture healing and bone remodelling. Tensile strength tests reveal the superior performance of BC-PMMA-1-NFB/L-Arg (36.11 MPa) compared with commercial PMMA (32 MPa). Immersion tests with simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for 7 days reveal accelerated apatite layer formation, emphasizing the potential benefits of NFB/ L -Arg in bone cement applications.

Abstract:ObjectiveThis research investigated the mechanical properties and bioactivity of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement after addition of the nano-hydroxyapatite(HA) coated bone collagen (mineralized collagen, MC).Materials & MethodsThe MC in different proportions were added to the PMMA bone cement to detect the compressive strength, compression modulus, coagulation properties and biosafety. The MC-PMMA was embedded into rabbits and co-cultured with MG 63 cells to exam bone tissue compatibility and gene expression of osteogenesis.Results15.0%(wt) impregnated MC-PMMA significantly lowered compressive modulus while little affected compressive strength and solidification. MC-PMMA bone cement was biologically safe and indicated excellent bone tissue compatibility. The bone-cement interface crosslinking was significantly higher in MC-PMMA than control after 6 months implantation in the femur of rabbits. The genes of osteogenesis exhibited significantly higher expression level in MC-PMMA.ConclusionsMC-PMMA presented perfect mechanical properties, good biosafety and excellent biocompatibility with bone tissues, which has profoundly clinical values.
Bioactive strong biodegradable bone cement for rapid osteointegration and osteogenesis

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is one of the most successful biomaterials in orthopaedic fixation, however, the poor osteogenic/osteointegration and high exothermic temperature limited their wide applications especially the complex clinical bone diseases. In this study, a multifunctional bioactive bone cement reinforced with the poly(citrate-silicon) (PCS) nanospheres was developed for overcoming the limitation of PMMA bone cement (PMMA-PCS). Compared with traditional PMMA, PMMA-PCS cement showed the increased injectability (about 5.56 times), extended setting time (about 6.4 min), increased hydrophilicity (46.9°) and reduced polymerization heat (about 41.9℃), without affecting the stability and plasticity. The mechanical strength was also more matched to the bone, with a compression modulus of about 61.8% of PMMA, which was beneficial for reducing stress concentration at the bone implantation site. PMMA-PCS bone cement also had good degradability, with a degradation rate of about 34.79% in 6 weeks. PMMA-PCS bone cement possessed the antioxidant, in vitro fluorescence imaging, in vitro antibacterial, and in vitro biomineralization properties. The cellular experiments showed that PMMA-PCS bone cement showed the improved osteogenic differentiation, mineral deposition, good anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic properties. In a rat femoral condyle defect model, the results demonstrated that PMMA-PCS bone cement could significantly promote the new bone formation and bone ingrowth both at the cement-bone contact surface and inside the cement, through improving the osteogenic proteins and angiogenesis.

Abstract:Bioinert polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is the most conventional approach for quick fixation of the orthopedic implant during hip replacement surgery. However, problems with implant loosening occur frequently and particularly under osteoporosis due to inadequate osteointegration between the cement and host bone. In order to enhance osteointegration ability of the PMMA cement, mineralized collagen (MC) was incorporated into the PMMA (PMMA-MC) in the current study. An improved wettability and dynamic mechanical performance of the PMMA-MC was demonstrated in vitro, compared to pure PMMA. Then, the effect of PMMA and PMMA-MC on osteoporotic bone marrow stromal cells were investigated. The results revealed that the addition of MC could significantly up-regulate osteoblastic gene expressions (Runx2, Osx, and Alp) and down-regulate the expressions of adipogenic markers (C/EBPα, PPARγ-2, and adiponectin). The osteointegration ability of bone cement was evaluated in an osteoporotic rat model with bone defect. After 8 and 12 weeks of implantation, PMMA-MC group had significantly more new bone formation around the implant and a higher push-out force at the bone-cement surface than that of the PMMA group. Moreover, to simulate clinical hip replacement, prosthesis was fixed with either PMMA or PMMA-MC bone cement in osteoporotic cadaveric femurs. Compared to the PMMA group, more torque was required in the PMMA-MC group to achieve the same rotation degree in torsion test. These findings revealed the potential of MC to induce an efficient fixation between the modified cement surface and osteoporotic host bone. PMMA-MC can be a promising candidate biomaterial for clinical hip replacement.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a widely used biomaterial. But there is still a challenge facing its unwanted bacterial adhesion because the subsequent biofilm formation usually leads to failure of related implants. Herein, we present a borneol-modified PMMA based on a facile and effective stereochemical strategy, generating antibacterial copolymer named as P(MMA-co-BA). It was synthesized by free radical polymerization and studied with different ratio between methyl methacrylate (MMA) and borneol acrylate (BA) monomers. NMR, GPC, and EA, etc., were used to confirm their chemical features. Their films were challenged with Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive), showing a BA content dependent antibacterial performance. The minimum effective dose should be 10%. Then in vivo subcutaneous implantations in mice demonstrated their biocompatibilities through routine histotomy and HE staining. Therefore, P(MMA-co-BA)s not only exhibited their unique antibacterial character but also suggested a potential for the safe usage of borneol-modified PMMA. frame and devices for further implantation.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cement is widely used in bone surgery for its good plasticity, chemical inertness, and excellent mechanical properties. Because of the high transparency of pure PMMA bone cement under X-ray imaging, it is necessary to add radiopacifiers such as barium sulfate. However, the interface compatibility between barium sulfate and PMMA is poor, leading to poor mechanical properties of the cement. In addition, the leaching of toxic barium ions significantly reduced the biocompatibility of the cement. In this study, a corrosion-resistant, insoluble ceramic, tungsten carbide (WC), is used as a radiopacifier. When the WC content is 10 wt%, the compressive strength is approximately 90 MPa without affecting the continuity of PMMA. The modified bone cement with 10 wt% WC showed superior radiopacity to that of commercial PMMA bone cement containing 30 wt% BaSO4. Moreover, the addition of WC greatly decreased the cytotoxicity of conventional PMMA. Our study proposed a novel PMMA cement with enhanced radiopacity and biocompatibility, showing great potential to be applied in the orthopedic field.

Mechanical properties and antibiotic release characteristics of poly(methyl methacrylate)-based bone cement formulated with mesoporous silica nanoparticles

Abstract:The influence of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) loaded with antibiotics on the mechanical properties of functional poly(methyl methacrylate)-(PMMA) based bone cements is investigated. The incorporation of MSNs to the bone cements (8.15wt%) shows no detrimental effects on the biomechanical properties of the freshly solidified bone cements. Importantly, there are no significant changes in the compression strength and bending modulus up to 6 months of aging in PBS buffer solution. The preserved mechanical properties of MSN-functionalized bone cements is attributed to the unchanged microstructures of the cements, as more than 96% of MSNs remains in the bone cement matrix to support the cement structures after 6 months of aging. In addition, the MSN-functionalized bone cements are able to increase the drug release of gentamicin (GTMC) significantly as compared with commercially available antibiotic-loaded bone cements. It can be attributed to the loaded nano-sized MSNs with uniform pore channels which build up an effective nano-network path enable the diffusion and extended release of GTMC. The combination of excellent mechanical properties and sustainable drug delivery efficiency demonstrates the potential applicability of MSN-functionalized PMMA bone cements for orthopedic surgery to prevent post-surgery infection.

Abstract:The treatments of spinal bone destruction, such as vertebral compressive fracture, vertebral tumor caused by external trauma, or metastatic tumor require vertebroplasty with bone cement. Research and development of bone cement with easy operability, good biosafety and biocompatibility, and appropriate mechanical strength is an important issue for clinical requirements. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement are the earliest and most widely used bone cement product, as their safety and clinical effects have been generally recognized. A relatively high compressive modulus, very low biocompatibility, and lack of osteointegration caused by the bioinert properties of PMMA has limited the long-term outcomes and further developments of PMMA-based bone cements. Since the disadvantages of the PMMA bone cement are known, the modification of these cements has become a very active area of research. In the present work, we will review the progress of strategies and their effects on the modification of PMMA bone cement used for vertebroplasty, with focus on new approaches, such as addition of biocompatible and bioactive materials, as well as their clinical applications and performance evaluations. At the end of this review, future development directions and prospects of PMMA bone cement are discussed.
Antibiotic release from an experimental biodegradable bone cement

Abstract:An experimental biodegradable bone cement [poly(propylene fumarate)-methylmethacrylate] (PPF-MMA) has been compared in vivo with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as a carrier agent for local release of antibiotics. This approach is potentially applicable to the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis where the clinical goal is to achieve sustained high concentrations of antibiotics locally in the infected bone. In our experiments, gentamicin- and vancomycin-impregnated cylindrical PMMA and PPF-MMA cement specimens were implanted subcutaneously in rats, and blood and wound fluid samples were obtained over a 2-week period. Antibiotic levels were determined using immunoassays, and microbiologic activity was confirmed with agar diffusion techniques. The biodegradable PPF-MMA cement achieved and maintained considerably higher wound antibiotic levels than did PMMA cement. Vancomycin levels for the PPF-MMA cement were greater than 20 times those for the PMMA cement at all sampling times from 24 h to 14 days. For both cements, the serum antibiotic concentrations remained safely below maximum levels recommended for parenteral therapy. Mechanical testing of the PPF-MMA cement showed that admixture of 3% by weight of antibiotic did not adversely affect material properties. We conclude that this experimental biodegradable bone cement (PPF-MMA) can be used as a carrier to achieve high sustained local levels and low serum levels of antibiotics. Because it is biodegradable and thus does not require a secondary procedure for removal, it has special potential for use in treatment of chronic osteomyelitis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Calcium phosphate bone cement has been applied to clinical surgery because of its good biocompatibility and osteoconduction. However poor mechanical properties and lack of osteoinductivity limit its wide application. OBJECTIVE:To develop calcium phosphate cement incorporated with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) loaded silk fibroin microspheres (SFM), which is a kind of new injectable bone graft material with slow-release function, and evaluate its physical and chemical properties and cel compatibility. METHODS: Empty SFMs were prepared with emulsion solvent evaporation to absorb NAC solution of different concentrations by NAC-SFM and the concentration of NAC at the maximum drug loading ratio was determined. Then, NAC-SFM was loaded into calcium phosphate bone cement to test the drug release propertiesin vitro. MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts were cultured on the surface of NAC-SFM calcium phosphate bone cement and cel attachment and growth were observed by scanning electron microscope. Additionaly, MC3T3-E1 cels were cultured with three kinds of bone cement extracts (calcium phosphate cement, SFM-calcium phosphate cement, NAC-SFM-calcium phosphate cement, as wel as cultured in theα-minimum essential medium containing a volume fraction of 10% fetal bovine serum and 1% penicilin-streptomycin double antibody as the control. MTS assay was used to evaluate cel proliferation. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Microspheres in the composite bone cement presented with smooth surface, same size, diffused distribution and no obvious destroy. Thus, the SFM could remain stable in the reaction process of the composite bone cement. The double slow release system which contained silk fibroin microspheres and calcium phosphate bone cement showed a significant decrease in the cumulative release percentage of NAC within the first 24 hours compared with the control group (P < 0.05). In the next 28 days, the release speed of NAC was significantly lower in the NAC-SFM-calcium phosphate cement group than the calcium phosphate cement group (P< 0.05). In addition, different extracts had no significant cytotoxicity to the growth of MC3TC-E1 cels. Thus, the NAC-SFM-calcium phosphate cement has good cytocompatibility, which provide a new insight into the development of bone repair biomaterials.

Abstract:Bioactive amphiphilic raspberry particles (BRPs) were proposed to addressing the challenge in cement-bone interface non-integration that was often taking place when poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cements are used. BRPs were designed to have surface patches with different functions, some of which are bioactive to promote bonding to bone and the rest are hydrophobic to promote well compatibility with PMMA matrix. With Pickering emulsion polymerization plus post-modification on surface, such functional particles have been successfully prepared and the composite cements (BRP-PMMA composite cements) were indeed found to promote bone related cell adhesion, while not to sacrifice any of the virtues of the conventional PMMA bone cements.
