Abstract:Template-assisted strategy is an effective method to obtain hollow nano/microspheres with uniform shape and size. However, acid, alkali, organic solvent and calcination are always required for the removal of template, resulting in the pollution of chemicals, VOCs emission or high energy-consumption. Here we report a water-soluble template prepared from α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) microspheres for the synthesis of ZnO particles with dense core-shell structure by two-step deposition-precipitation method. After the template of α-HH microspheres was removed simply by rinsing with water, the core-shell structured ZnO particles were turned into the hollow microspheres in the dimension of 0.8-1.2 μm. The ZnO hollow microspheres won large specific surface area and achieved the photocatalytic reaction rate constant of 5.59 times that of ZnO solid particles, which was assessed by the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light irradiation. This work develops α-HH microspheres into water-soluble template for the green synthesis of catalysts with hollow architecture so as to avoid chemicals pollution and high energy-consumption during the template removal.

Abstract:The AlOOH core/shell microspheres were successfully synthesized via a one-step template-free hydrothermal route. By simply changing the ratio of alcohol to water, core/shell microspheres constructed with nanoplatelets and their curling structures could be selectively synthesized. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of AlOOH spheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The formation of core/shell structures may involve aggregation of amorphous building clusters into spheres and their subsequent reaction, dissolution, and re-deposition process. The morphology, structure, and composition of the spheres are investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the boehmite core–shell microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. The as-prepared AlOOH core–shell superstructures are powerful in the removal of Congo red pollutant from waste water.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed great advances in nanotechnology since tremendous efforts have been devoted for the design, synthesis, and application of nano particles. However, for most mineral materials such as calcium sulfate, it is still a challenge to prepare their nanoparticles, especially with uniform size and high monodispersity. In this work, we report a route to regulate the morphology and structure of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (alpha-HH) and successfully synthesize and stabilize its mesocrystals for the first time. The ellipsoidal mesocrystals in length of 300-500 nm are composed by a-HH nanoparticles arranged in the same crystallographic fashion and interspaced with EDTA. The time-dependent experiments indicate the a-HH aggregates evolve from irregular structure to mesocrystal structure with the subsequent growth of subunits and then partially fuse into single crystals. Disorganizing the mesocrystal structure before the emergence of fusion reaps alpha-HH nanorods in a length of 30-80 nm and a width of 10-20 nm with high monodispersion. This ingenious concept paves an alternative way for nanoparticle preparation and is readily extended to other inorganic systems.

Abstract:A novel template-free hydrothermal method is developed to prepare large-scale ZnO hollow microspheres. The key strategy for the successful realization is that we employ a high concentration of trisodium citrate to control the nucleation and growth rate of ZnO crystal forming microspheres with core/shell structures and the proper pH of an alkaline solution to remove the cores generating hollow microspheres. The morphology, structure, and composition of the microspheres have been investigated with field-emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy for the growth mechanism. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of ZnO hollow microspheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The infrared absorption spectra indicate that annealing can lead to the decomposition of impurity groups in the as-prepared sample. Both room-temperature Raman and photoluminescence results demonstrate that the annealed ZnO microspheres are of good crystalline wurtzite structure with high optical quality.

Abstract:<p>In this work, hierarchical hollow ZnO microspheres with an average diameter of 3.5 μm are successfully synthesized via a simple template-free solvothermal route. And these microspheres are constructed by anisotropic single-crystalline ZnO nanorods which grows along the [0001] c-axis direction because of the selective adsorption of ethylene glycol. It is noted that ethylene glycol plays a crucial role in promoting the growth and aggregation of nanorod by comparing the effect of other solvents, such as water, ethanol, isopropanol and glycerol. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of as-obtained hollow ZnO microspheres is evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The photocatalytic performance of this material reveals that these hollow ZnO microspheres can not only efficiently degradate the dye, but also show good stability during the cycling photodegradation.</p>

Abstract:Submicron-sized α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) has a promising application in the clinical field. In a reverse microemulsion using n-hexanol as the oil phase, aqueous solution of H2SO4 and CaCl2 as the water phase, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant, α-HH was successfully synthesized in the shape of submicron-rod. α-HH precipitated directly from the microemulsion and either remained metastable or hydrated to calcium sulfate dihydrate (DH) depending on the temperature, H2SO4/CaCl2 molar ratio, and reaction time. The surfactant also played an important role and an increase in the mass ratio of CTAB/water lowered the temperature needed for α-HH precipitation. A higher ratio of CTAB/water and temperature of above 90°C was a good option for pure α-HH synthesis. After a thorough examination of the synthesis conditions, a reverse microemulsion method was established for the synthesis of α-HH with submicron size.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:Large-scale novel hierarchical ZnO microspheres were fabricated by a facile precursor procedure in the absence of self-assembled templates, organic additives, or matrices. A field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image reveals that the ZnO microspheres with diameter of 5–18μm are built by sheet-like ZnO networks with average thickness of 40nm and length of several microns. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) image indicates that the building blocks, sheet-like ZnO networks, are porous mesocrystal terminated with {01−10} crystal planes. A potential application of the ZnO microspheres as a catalyst in the synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles was investigated. It was found that the hierarchical ZnO microsphere catalyst exhibits structure-induced enhancement of catalytic performance and a strong durability.

Abstract:Varieties of multishelled hollow spheres with a high yield have been successfully prepared via a simple route with gluconate salt as the carbon source. The product yield of the multishelled hollow spheres was determined by the pH value of the solution. Multiple light reflecting and scattering in between the hierarchical spherical shells enhanced the photo-energy conversion efficiency of the ZnO hollow sphere-based DSSC.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow structures show particular properties and promising applications, and therefore have been attracting attention. To the best of our knowledge, ZnO/C hollow sphere constructed by octahedron has not been reported so far. In this paper, a solvothermal process has been developed to prepare precursor hollow spheres constructed by octahedron. The precursor can be converted to hollow ZnO/C spheres with well-preserved morphology via thermal decomposing. In order to research the formation mechanism, intermediate precursors were acquired at different reaction times, and a possible growth mechanism was also proposed. When the hierarchical ZnO/C hollow spheres constructed by octahedron were used as the adsorbents, the Langmuir model can well describe the adsorption isotherms. For Congo red and Pb(II), the maximum adsorption capacities are up to 392 and 314 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the as-prepared ZnO/C displays good recyclability in the removal of Congo red. Our results provide new strategy for the synthesis of novel ZnO/C hollow sphere, which has promising adsorption ability for water treatment.

Abstract:ZnS hollow nanospheres with porous shells were successfully fabricated by a simple one-pot template-free hydrothermal route with the assistance of trolamine. The hollow nanospheres with a mean diameter of about 220 nm and the pore size of the porous shell of about 3.2 nm exhibit large BET surface areas of 129.9 m(2) g(-1). The formation of ZnS hollow nanospheres was definitely driven by the well-known Ostwald ripening process. The morphology of the product could be controlled by adjusting the volume of trolamine in the ternary solution, which could influence the nucleation density and rate of the growing region during the initial stage of reaction. As synthesized, highly defective nanocrystalline ZnS exhibits a very strong defect-related green emission, which may pertain to the emission enhancement of the unique geometrical morphology of ZnS hollow nanospheres with a porous shell. The observed green PL emission of the wurtzite-type ZnS nanomaterials could provide an interesting application in the development of novel luminescent devices.

Abstract:Hydrangea-like hollow microspherical ZnO has been synthesized via a transformation from layered basic zinc acetate (LBZA) and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Investigation of the early stages of the crystal growth revealed a non-classic growth mechanism. With increasing reaction time, (1) amorphous spherical aggregates formed initially, followed by (2) surface multiple nucleation, (3) crystallization into LBZA nanosheets which are vertical to the microspheres' surface, (4) surface condensation leading to the formation of hollow microspheres, (5) extension of the crystallization both inwards and outwards, and (6) transformation to zinc oxide during annealing in air. The detailed formation mechanism of the hydrangea-like microspheres, consisting of thin (∼5.4 nm) LBZA nanosheets, is proposed. The hydrangea-like ZnO exhibited superior photocatalytic performance in dye degradation due to its unique construction and high specific surface area. This work may shed light on crystal engineering of porous microspheres, hollow crystals and thin nanosheets of other materials.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials are eliciting considerable research interest for their application in catalysts and electrodes. In this paper, we report the synthesis of mesoporous alpha-LiAlO2 via a hydrothermal route using through-hole anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) as templates. Crystal structures and morphologies were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). alpha-LiAlO2 reproduced the one-dimensional structures of AAO templates and obtained two kinds of nanostructures, namely, nanoparticles and nanoflakes. Extremely high specific surface area of up to 117.3 m(2)/g and large pore volume of 0.87 cm(3)/g were confirmed by nitrogen-sorption measurement, which shed light on the potential practical application of mesoporous alpha-LiAlO2. Abstract:By using spherobacterium Streptococcus thermophilus as a natural biotemplate, ZnO hollow spheres have been synthesized in a simple hydrothermal method based on the surface biofunctionality of the microorganism, followed by calcination. The as-obtained products are characterized by techniques of XRD, FESEM, TEM and N2 adsorption. Furthermore, a possible formation mechanism involving a two-step encapsulation process is proposed which has an effect on the bimodal pore structure of the products with pores in the mesoporous range. The research introduces a new concept to synthesize porous hollow spheres by using spherobacterium as a biological template and opens up a new pathway to synthesize hollow nanospheres, nanotubes and other kinds of 3D nanostructures with bacterium as the template via simple chemical routes.

Abstract:Uniform urchin-like α-FeOOH hollow spheres assembled from nanoneedles have been synthesized via a facile and green one-pot method. By simply adjusting the amount of glycerol in the reaction system, hierarchical urchin-like α-FeOOH solid spheres or hollow spheres can be obtained. When evaluated for the potential use in water treatment, it is found that the as-obtained uniform urchin-like α-FeOOH hollow spheres exhibit excellent capability for removing both organic dye and heavy metal ions in waste water.

Abstract:Wurtzite ZnO microspheres, 5.5–11μm in diameter and with smooth surfaces, were prepared in absolute ethanol via a simple template-free method in the presence of ethylenediamine. The products were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. This simple method to fabricate ZnO microspheres shows high yield (>90%) and good reproducibility. The formation process of ZnO microspheres was discussed. The as-obtained ZnO microspheres are expected to provide some immediate advantages for optical, microelectronic, and biological applications.

Abstract:We report a facile and green chemical solution approach to synthesize monodisperse alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (alpha-HH) nanoellipsoids with a length of 600 nm and a width of 300 nm by simply mixing Ca2+ and SO42- glycerol-water precursor solutions in the presence of Na(2)EDTA. The alpha-HH nanoellipsoid is formed through a Na(2)EDTA-mediated self-assembly of small primary building blocks (alpha-HH domains: similar to 14 nm). The study on the morphological evolution of alpha-HH reveals that the controlled synergy of supersaturation (precursor concentration) and Na(2)EDTA is crucial for the development of alpha-HH into nanoellipsoids. Further thermal annealing of the nanoellipsoid could make the alpha-HH domains transit into calcium sulfate anhydrites and grow up, generating the gaps between them and resulting in a porous structure. This work paves a new way for preparing high-quality alpha-HH nanoellipsoids with a monodisperse nanosize and a porous structure, promising their future application in many fields such as biomedicine.

Abstract:The paper describes a methodology for fabricating hollow microspheres of tin dioxide by utilizing carbonaceous saccharide microspheres as templates. The fabricated SnO 2 microspheres exhibit uniform morphology and high crystallinity, which were verified with X-ray diffraction analyses and electron microscopy images. Through controlling different solvent and heating rate, we can accurately control the uniformity, dispersion and surface morphology of the hollow microspheres. Additionally, the study explored the utilization of the prepared SnO 2 hollow microspheres and SnO 2 nanoparticles in the degradation of Rhodamine B as detected by ultraviolet ray. Test data results indicated that the photocatalytic efficiency of SnO 2 hollow microspheres surpassed that of the nanoparticles, attributed to the former’s multi-level reflection of light, resulting in effective light utilization. The hollow SnO 2 microspheres can serve as an excellent candidate for a photocatalyst, and this controllable yet sample synthesis route is anticipated to be employed for production of numerous hollow metal oxide structures with superior photoelectric properties.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of ZnS hollow microspheres by a solvothermal route is reported. The synthesis was achieved by a proper selection of a sulfur source, i.e., Na2S2O3⋅5H2O or (NH2)2CS, to react with Zn(CH3COO)2⋅2H2O in mixed solvents of ethylene glycol and deionized water. The ZnS products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. XRD identified the ZnS products to have either zinc blende or wurtzite structure. SEM images revealed hollow ZnS microspheres with 1 to 2 μm diameters and 100 to 200 nm shell thicknesses. TEM images confirmed that the hollow ZnS microspheres were assembled by ZnS crystalline nanocrystallites. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of the zinc blende hollow microspheres showed a strong green emission at 514 nm and weak emission at 379 nm.
