Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:A mixed lanthanide metal-organic frameworks Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022) were synthesized by the simple solvothermal method and its temperature sensing was studied emphatically. The 2′-fluoro-[1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-3,3′′,5,5′′-tetracarboxylic acid (H4FTPTC) can efficiently sensitize Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions effectively, and it transfers the energy to Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions through resonance coupling. Accordingly, so Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022) can exhibit strong characteristic fluorescence of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022), as a proportional type luminescent thermometer shows excellent performance in the temperature range (313K-473K).

Abstract:Synthesis of rare earth compound nanosheets with uniform thickness is of potential interest to the luminescent materials. Herein, whole series of rare earth hydrates and oxides nanosheets have been synthesized by using lamellar liquid crystal as a template, except Ce and Pm. Polarizing microscope images and transmission electron microscopy images show that the lamellar liquid crystal can prevent the rare earth hydrate nanosheets from curving to nanotubes in the processes of synthesis. The synthesized nanosheets have a uniform thickness of 10–15nm and can retain morphology after being calcined at 650°C. After facile chemical treatment, the functionalized rare earth compounds were obtained, which have unique luminescent property.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of temperature is extremely critical in numerous fields and has drawn widespread concern nowadays. To meet the demand of temperature sensing in nanoscale optoelectronic devices, a series of quasi-two-dimensional square Y2O3 nanosheets were fabricated through a topological method with the co-doping of Bi3+ and Sm3+. The intensity of Sm3+ under 340 nm excitation was greatly enhanced, and multipeak spectra were obtained due to the energy transfer process. Moreover, the three peaks in temperature-dependent emission spectra exhibited different changing trends. The mechanism of luminescence and its temperature response behavior were explicated in detail before the attempt of further application. Such characteristic could generate three kinds of luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) to realize multimode temperature sensing, which owned higher accuracy compared to the single LIR technology. The relative sensitivity and repetition rate of the three modes were calculated, and the results were exceptional, indicating that the synthetic quasi-two-dimensional Y2O3: Bi3+, Sm3+ nanosheet can prospectively be applied to multimode nano temperature sensing in the future.

The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Ratiometric temperature sensing behavior of dual-emitting Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal with high relative sensitivity

Abstract:The Na5Y9F32 single crystals doped with fixed 0.5 mol% Ce3+ and various concentrations of Tb3+ (0, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mol%) were grown by Bridgeman method. The luminescent properties, energy transfer (ET) and the ratiometric temperature sensing behavior were studied thoroughly. Under 315 nm excitation, the Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal mainly presented two emissions at blue 385 nm (Ce3+:5d→4 f) and green 545 nm (Tb3+:5D4→7F5). The color area can undergo from the purple-blue region (0.1643, 0.0768) to the green region (0.2585, 0.3604) by altering the content of Tb3+ ion from 0 to 0.8 mol%. The energy transfer between the Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions was confirmed by decay curves with emission spectra, and the maximum energy transfer efficiency (ETE) were estimated to be 45.1%. The mechanism of dipole-dipole interaction (d-d) for energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ can be explained by the formula of Dexter’s energy transfer. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of blue and green emission showed a linear relationship with temperature varying from 298 K to 473 K in the 0.5 mol% Ce3+/0.8 mol% Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal. Meanwhile, the 0.5 mol% Ce3+/0.8 mol% Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal possessed higher absolute sensitivity (Sa) of 0.0157 K−1, relative sensitivity (Sr) of 1.18% K−1 and temperature resolution ( δ T ) of 0.086 K. By using the integrating spheres, the quantum yield (QY) of 0.5 mol% Ce3+/0.8 mol% Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal was measured as ~16.88%. These excellent optical properties suggest that the Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped Na5Y9F32 single crystal with stable physical-chemical properties could have a far-reaching application prospect for the ratiometric optical thermometry.

Abstract:Realizing multicolored luminescence in two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials would afford potential for a range of next-generation nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Moreover, combining fine structured spectral line emission and detection may further enrich the studies and applications of functional nanomaterials. Herein, a lanthanide doping strategy has been utilized for the synthesis of 2D ZnSe:Er3+ nanosheets to achieve fine-structured, multicolor luminescence spectra. Simultaneous upconversion and downconversion emission is realized, which can cover an ultrabroadband optical range, from ultraviolet through visible to the near-infrared region. By investigating the low-temperature fine structure of emission spectra at 4 K, we have observed an abundance of sublevel electronic energy transitions, elucidating the electronic structure of Er3+ ions in the 2D ZnSe nanosheet. As the temperature is varied, these nanosheets exhibit tunable multicolored luminescence under 980 and 365 nm excitation. Utilizing the distinct sublevel transitions of Er3+ ions, the developed 2D ZnSe:Er3+ optical temperature sensor shows high absolute (15.23% K–1) and relative sensitivity (8.61% K–1), which is superior to conventional Er3+-activated upconversion luminescent nanothermometers. Engineering Visible to Near-Infrared Luminescence through a Selective Doping Strategy for High-Performance Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Luminescence nanothermometers have garnered considerable attention due to their noncontact measurement, high spatial resolution, and rapid response. However, many nanothermometers employing single-mode measurement encounter challenges regarding their relative sensitivity. Herein, a unique class of tunable upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) luminescence covering the visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) is reported, characterized by the superior Tm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ emissions induced by efficient energy transfer. The outstanding negative thermal expansion characteristic of ScF3 nanocrystals has been found to guide excitation energy toward the relevant emitting states in the Yb3+-Ho3+-Tm3+-codoped system, consequently resulting in remarkable near-infrared III (NIR-III) luminescence at ∼1625 nm (Tm3+:3F4 → 3H6 transition), which in turn presents numerous opportunities for designing multimode ratiometric luminescence thermometry. Furthermore, by facilitating phonon-assisted energy transfer in Er3+-Ho3+-codoped systems, the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of 4I13/2 of Er3+ and 5I6 of Ho3+ in ScF3:Yb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ exhibits a strong temperature dependence, enabling NIR-II/III luminescence thermometry with superior thermal sensitivity and resolution (Sr = 0.78% K-1, δT = 0.64 K). These findings not only underscore the distinctive and ubiquitous attributes of lanthanide ion-doped nanomaterials but also hold significant implications for crafting luminescence thermometers with unparalleled sensitivity.

Abstract:The optical characteristics and varied applications of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years, such as in ratiometric thermometry. This review thoroughly examines the various synthesis processes utilized in producing these nanocrystals and their application in temperature sensing. Synthesis of NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals is a complex procedure that requires careful management of dopant concentrations, crystal phase, size, and shape. The distinctive luminescent characteristics of lanthanide ions, which facilitate the transformation of photons with low energy into emissions with higher energy, render NaYF4 nanocrystals suitable for ratiometric thermometry applications. We explore the fundamental concepts underlying upconversion luminescence in developing ratiometric temperature sensors. In this discourse, we examine the selection of lanthanide dopants, the mechanics underlying their energy transmission, and the development of customized sensor architectures. This review covers the recent progress and utilization of NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals in ratiometric thermometry, including diverse areas such as biological temperature detection, environmental surveillance, and materials research. We evaluate the obstacles and potential advancements in this domain, specifically emphasizing approaches to improving temperature sensors' precision, responsiveness, and applicability based on upconversion.
Three-energy-level-cascaded Strategy for a More Sensitive Luminescence Ratiometric Thermometry

Abstract:Luminescence ratiometric thermometry has gained increasing attention in recent years because of its several merits, such as non-invasive operating mode, fast response time, excellent spatial resolution, and so forth. It can be realized by using the thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) of rare earth ions. The maximum thermal sensitivity for the TCELs-based luminescence ratiometric thermometry has been found to be similar to 2000/kT(2). Here we show that using a three-energy-level-cascaded strategy can surpass this maximum value. In scheelite host material, the (4)G(11/2)-H-6(15/2) transition of Dy3+ ion was observed successfully upon UV excitation. Moreover, the Dy3+ ion's (4)G(11/2)/I-4(15/2)/F-4(9/2) excited states were confirmed to be thermally linked with each other by studying on the photoluminescence of the as-prepared Dy3+-embedded phosphors at different temperatures. By utilizing the (4)G(11/2)/F-4(9/2) states, rather than the commonly investigated I-4(15/2)/(4)F(9/2)( )ones in the previous literatures, the relative sensitivity was found to as high as 2414/kT(2) over the experimental temperature range. It surpasses the theoretical maximum value 2000/kT(2). In the end, we study the relationship between the relative sensitivity and temperature resolution, and find that a higher relative sensitivity cannot always ensure a better temperature resolution. In order to achieve a better temperature resolution in practice, both the relative sensitivity and the relative uncertainty of the luminescence intensity ratio that is used for indicating temperature should be considered simultaneously. Lanthanide-doped bismuth-based fluoride nanoparticles: controlled synthesis and ratiometric temperature sensing

Abstract:Bismuth-based nanoparticles, particularly NaBiF4 , have attracted extensive attention as hosts for lanthanides (Ln(3+)) ions and other luminescent ions in recent years. However, the controllable synthesis of NaBiF4 nanoparticles remains a challenge. Herein, different concentrations of Gd3+ ion-doped NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er(3+ )upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. By changing the doping levels of Gd3+ ions (0-20%), the size of NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+ UCNPs can be easily tuned from 200 nm to 50 nm, but the nanoparticles always maintained the hexagonal phase structure. Under 980 nm excitation, the as-synthesized NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+/20%Gd3+ UCNPs showed desirable luminescent properties. Furthermore, the 980 nm excited luminescence temperature-sensing behavior of NaBiF4 : Yb3+/Er3+/20%Gd3+ UCNPs was achieved in a wide temperature range from 148 K to 498 K. These results provide strong evidence for the controllable synthesis of NaBiF4 UCNPs and their application in ratiometric temperature sensing.

Here, a two-dimensional (2D) bi-Ln-MOF is fabricated using Eu3+/Ce4+ and 5-boronoisophthalic acid (5-bop) via a crystal phase transformation strategy to construct a ratiometric luminescent Hg2+ sensor. Due to the lower energy gap of Ce4+ compared to Eu3+ and the corresponding stronger energy-absorption ability, the Ce4+ in bi-Ln-MOF shows a stronger and broader fluorescent emission than that of Eu3+. The substitution of the boric acid group in the bi-Ln-MOF by Hg2+ amplifies the difference between the two lanthanide ions. Therefore, the fluorescence intensity of Ce4+ increases whereas that of Eu3+ decreases accordingly, a behavior distinct from individual Eu-MOF or Ce-MOF performance. This novel bi-Ln-MOF sensor not only achieves a wide linear response range from 0.5 to 120 μM with a low detection limit of 167 nM for Hg2+, but also demonstrates exceptional selectivity and stability. The intriguing sensing mechanism of energy competition and the novel synthesis approach for 2D bi-Ln-MOF are anticipated to broaden the application possibilities of bi-Ln-MOFs for designing ratiometric sensors.
Temperature Sensitive Luminescence of Ce3+ in Two Different Sites of Na3lusi2o7

Abstract:Ce3+ doped sodium lutetium pyrosilicates phosphors Na(3)Lu(1-x)CexSi(2)O(7) were prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. The studies on VUV-vis luminescent properties and fluorescent decays indicate that Ce3+ ions occupy two distinct Lu3+ sites in the host lattice. The excitation and emission bands of Ce3+ in these two lattice sites are assigned in terms of crystal structure and an improved ligand polarization model. The emission color and chromaticity coordinates of phosphors can be tuned by altering temperature due to the temperature-dependent characteristics of two luminescence centers, which suggest the potential application of the phosphors in temperature sensors. Ratiometric optical thermometer with high-sensitive temperature sensing based on synergetic luminescence of Ce3+-Eu2+ in LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors

Abstract:Single-phase Ce3+, Eu2+ co-doped LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors are successfully prepared via solid reaction process. The crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal quenching performance of LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ samples are systematically studied. The presence of two crystallographic positions of Sr2+ ions in LiSr4(BO3)3 host makes the emission bands of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion exhibit asymmetry. Based on the configuration coordinate model, the thermal quenching of luminescence from Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion is investigated in detail. The temperature-sensitive performance is further studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of LiSr4(BO3)3:0.06Ce3+, 0.04Eu2+ phosphor. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.057 K-1 and 4.017% K−1, respectively, which are better than many previously reported inorganic optical thermometry materials. Besides, the emissions of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion are clearly separated, providing good signal discrimination ability. The results demonstrate that LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ phosphors have outstanding temperature-sensitive properties and can be the excellent optical thermometric materials.

Abstract:Cubic monodisperse BaCeF5 and BaCeF5:Tb3+ nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by a citric acid assisted solvothermal method. The crystalline phase, size, morphology, and luminescence properties were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescent excitation spectra (PLE) as well as dynamics decay. The results reveal that the Tb3+-doped BaCeF5 sample shows a strong green emission centered at 546 nm, corresponding to the D-5(4)-> F-7(5) transition of Tb3+ due to an efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+. The decay lifetime of Ce3+ monotonically increases with increase of Tb3+ concentration. The critical energy transfer distance between Ce3+ and Tb3+ was also calculated by methods of concentration quenching and spectral overlapping. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the dipole-dipole interaction should be the dominant mechanism for the Ce3+-Tb3+ energy transfer.
Temperature-Dependent Luminescence of Nd3+-Doped Carbon Nanodots for Nanothermometry

Abstract:Noncontact optical nanothermometers operating within the biological transparency windows are required to study temperature-sensitive biological phenomena at the nanoscale. Nanoparticles containing rare-earth ions such as Nd3+ have been reported to be efficient luminescence-based ratiometric thermometers, however often limited by poor water solubility and concentration-related quenching effects. Herein, we introduce a new type of nanothermometer, obtained by employing low-dimensional carbon nanodots (CNDs) as matrices to host Nd3+ ions (NdCNDs). By means of a one-pot procedure, small (∼7-12 nm), water-soluble nanoparticles were obtained, with high (15 wt %) Nd3+ loading. This stable metal-CND system features temperature-dependent photoluminescence in the second biological window (BW II) upon irradiation at 808 nm, thereby allowing accurate and reversible (heating/cooling) temperature measurements with good sensitivity and thermal resolution. The system possesses remarkable biocompatibility in vitro and promising performance at a high penetration depth in tissue models.

Abstract:Ce-based nanomaterials have been widely studied as catalyst for their unique electronic structure, but there are few reports on the combination of cerium catalytic activity and photoluminescence performance. In this paper, by adjusting the molar ratio of Ce/P, CeO 2 /CePO 4 nanocrystal were synthesized in one-step, which integrated the enzyme activities of CeO 2 and CePO 4 , as well as the optical property of CePO 4 together. Taking H 2 O 2 as analyte model, utilizing the catalase oxidization activity of CeO 2 /CePO 4 , TMB molecule can be oxidized, leading to the increased absorption intensity of 652 nm, realizing the colorimetric assay of H 2 O 2 . On the other hand, using the fluorescence of CeO 2 /CePO 4 at 338 nm as output signal, which can be quenched by H 2 O 2 since Ce 3+ ions were oxidized into Ce 4+ , realizing H 2 O 2 fluorescence detection. Compared with the single-signal probe, CeO 2 /CePO 4 provides two sensing modes of fluorescence and colorimetry for H 2 O 2 discrimination to obtain different test results, which can be mutually verified and effectively improve the detection accuracy.
