Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:Mixed-lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials have important application values in ratiometric temperature sensing. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer a self-supporting network to conveniently tune multiple Ln3+ ions, but challenges still exist in material design. In this work, we selected two simple organic molecules as hydrogen-bonded building blocks, which are melamine (MA) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) owning the suitable energy to sensitize Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. MA assists PDC molecules to support the network in a new HOF (MA-PDC), where the abundant carboxylic groups enable Ln3+ ions to combine with the HOF. Based on the effective energy transfer process, the emission of Tb3+ and Eu3+ from TbxEu1–x@MA-PDC (x = 0.75, 0.85, 0.90) shows the obvious temperature dependence, which benefits ratiometric temperature detection. Taking Tb0.85Eu0.15@MA-PDC as an example, when temperature varies from 303 to 443 K, the intensity ratio exhibits distinct S-type response based on Mott-Seitz model. It also behaves good relative sensitivity (1.03%/K at 383 K), low temperature resolution (0.059 K) and large reproducibility (>96%). This work demonstrates that functionalization of a simple-component HOF with mixed Ln3+ ions is a fantastic strategy to develop novel ratiometric thermometers of both low cost and good performance.

Abstract:Two new lanthanide coordination polymers formulated as [Ln(BDC)1.5(DMF)(H2O)] n [Ln = Tb (1), Gd (2)] [H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide] were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The coordination polymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The two coordination polymers are isostructural and exhibit twofold interpenetrating pcu three-dimensional open frameworks constructed by tetradentate ligand of H2BDC. The fluorescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated at 298 or 77 K both in solid state and in CH2Cl2 solvent dispersed as suspensions. Coordination polymer 1 exhibits characteristic Tb3+ ions emission transitions of 5D4 → 7F J (J = 6–2) at 77 or 298 K both in the solid-state and in CH2Cl2 solvent. Moreover, the vibrational structure of 1 is more defined at 77 K, which exhibits another two 5D4 → 7F1 and 5D4 → 7F2 transitions more than that at 298 K. The lifetimes of 1 are longer at 77 K (915.2 μs in the solid state and 874.11 μs in the CH2Cl2 solvent) than that at 298 K (866.31 μs in the solid state and 801.04 μs in the CH2Cl2 solvent), which may be caused by the increase of radiative rate and decrease of non-radiative rate at low temperature. The singlet excited state (28,653 cm−1) and the lowest triplet energy level (23,641 cm−1) of H2BDC ligand were calculated based on the UV–Vis absorbance edges of ligand and the phosphorescence spectrum of Gd3+ coordination polymer (2) at 77 K, showing that the effective extent of energy transfer from H2BDC ligand to Tb3+ ion. Finally, thermal behaviors of the two coordination polymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, which exhibit thermal stability to 250 °C.

Abstract:The first example of a ratiometric Eu/Tb thermometer based on a lanthanide phosphonate is reported, which presents a temperature dependent emission under 393 nm excitation that enables its use as a molecular thermometer with a maximum relative sensitivity of 3.9% K-1 and a minimum temperature uncertainty of 0.15 K, both at 38 K. Additionally, the compound is a competitive luminescent colorimetric probe showing temperature dependent (x, y) CIE color coordinates changing from yellow, (0.48, 0.48) at 18 K, to red, (0.64, 0.37) at 300 K.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide coordination polymers(LnCPs) containing both light and heavy rare-earth elements, namely {[Eu-2(pydc)(3)(H2O)]2H(2)O}(n) (1-Eu, H(2)pydc = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid), [Ln(pyc)(2)(Hpyc) (NO3)] n (Ln = Nd (2-Nd), Sm (3-Sm), Eu (4-Eu), Gd (5-Gd), Tb (6-Tb), Ho (7-Ho), and Er (8-Er), Hpyc = pyridine-3-carboxylic acid), has been synthesized under hydro(solvo) thermal conditions and fully characterized. The crystal structure analysis indicates that in situ decarboxylation of H2pydc occurred in the synthesis process of 2-Nd-8-Er. Coordination polymer 1-Eu displays a 3-D pcu network with centralsymmetric quad-core structural units [Eu4(COO)(6)] linked by 1-D chains. 2-Nd-8-Er are of triple helical chain enantiomeric pair 6(1)/6(5) axis, and can be further linked through two separate kinds of H. bonding interaction to form a mirror symmetrical 3-D framework; the final topological symbol of the jointly connected network is rare {4(7)center dot 6(8)}. Solid-state luminescence studies show that the emission spectra of these LnCPs cover both the visible and near-infrared luminescence region. 2-Nd exhibits characteristic F-4(3/2) -> I-4(J/2) (J = 9, 11, 13) transition NIR emission. 1-Eu and 4-Eu provide characteristic D-5(o) -> F-7(J) intense and bright red luminescence, while 4-Eu exhibits better luminescence performance because of the presence of the O-H oscillators within 1-Eu. 6-Tb exhibits characteristic D-5(4) -> F-7(J) intense and bright green luminescence. Furthermore, through doping with PMMA polymer, the luminescence properties of 4-Eu and 6-Tb are all improved. The results show the best doping concentration is 4%. The thermal stabilities of 4-Eu-PMMA and 6-Tb-PMMA increased from 270 to 315 degrees C when compared with single coordination polymers 4-Eu and 6-Tb. The co-doping of 4-Eu, 5-Gd, and 6-Tb (0.92/0.04/0.04) with PMMA at a total concentration of 4% resulted in a tunable luminescence material W-(4-Eu,W- 5-Gd,W- 6-Tb)-PMMA film. When excited at 285 nm, W-(4-Eu,W-5-Gd,W-6-Tb)-PMMA shows white-light emission with the CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.35). The lifetime of Eu3+ ions in W(4-Eu, 5-Gd, 6-Tb)-PMMA increased from 1032.24 mu s to 1272.26 mu s when compared with 4-Eu-PMMA, and the efficiency of energy transfer (eta(ET)) from Tb3+ to Eu3+ within the co-doping PMMA film could be estimated to be 29.9%.

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide coordination polymers LnBTPTA (Ln = Eu, Tb, EuxTb1−x), was synthesized using a tricarbocylic ligand 4,4′,4′′-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl))tribenzoic acid (H3BTPTA). X-ray single crystal analyses reveal that the asymmetric unit cell contains seven crystallographically independent metal ions and seven crystallographically independent ligands which is quite unusual. The 3D framework is comprised of 2D thick layers stacked through van der Waals force, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions. Eu0.0316Tb0.9684BTPTA presents a dual-emission of Tb3+ at 543nm and Eu3+ at 617nm, and the intensity ratio shows an excellent linear relationship with the temperature changing in 25–225K. The relative sensitivity 0.45–5.12%K−1 is much higher than those have been reported in the same detection range.

Abstract:A mixed lanthanide complex was synthesized hydrothermally with two kinds of organic ligands, adenine and biphenyl‐4,4′‐dicarboxylic acid, and is formulated as Ad/Tb0.999Eu0.001/BPDC (Ad = adeninate, BPDC = biphenyl‐4,4′‐dicarboxylate). The photophysical properties, especially the fluorescent sensing properties, have been studied in detail and compared to those of Tb0.999Eu0.001/BPDC, with a single ligand. It can be used as a ratiometric luminescent thermometer on the basis of the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+, whose color will change from green–yellow to red from 100 K to 300 K. Abstract:By removing 12 coordinated and isolated water molecules, the energy transfer efficiency from Tb3+ to Eu3+ increases from 27% to 96%, which results in the quantum yields of Eu3+ reaching up to 13%. The dehydrated Gd0.2Tb1.08Eu0.72MIP display excellent temperature sensing ability between the emission intensity of Eu3+ and temperature from 77 to 300 K. Luminescent lanthanide‐based coordination polymers (LnCPs) present great potential in low‐temperature detection due to their convenience in contactless readout. High quantum yields and energy transfer efficiency are favored by LnCPs as luminescent thermometer. In this work, based on the thermogravimetric analysis and temperature‐dependent powder x‐ray diffraction, coordinated and isolated molecules of [Ln2(mip)3(H2O)8·4H2O]∞ (abbreviated as Ln2MIP) were removed by dehydration process. Combining luminescent measurement and calculation, both quantum yields and energy transfer efficiency between Tb3+ and Eu3+ have been greatly enhanced. Additionally, the Eu3+ intensity of dehydrated Gd0.2Tb1.08Eu0.72MIP displays excellent temperature sensing ability from 77 to 300 K with enhanced relative sensitivity. These results demonstrate the potential of LnCPs in low‐temperature sensing with high quantum yields and energy transfer efficiency.

Abstract:Lanthanide-containing complexes have been widely developed as ratiometric luminescence thermometers, which are non-invasive, contactless and accurate. Synthesis of these Ln-complexes generally requires high temperatures, multiple steps and other harsh conditions. Further, bimetallic lanthanide complexes, which have been reported to be better thermometers, are even more challenging. This can be made simpler by preparing a host-guest complex of lanthanides. In this work, Tb or both Tb and Eu are encapsulated in a MOF host, which makes them emissive. The ratio of the Tb/Eu was also tuned easily by simply changing their ratio in the solution, and this gave a tunable emission. Accordingly, we were able to synthesise both emissive Tb complex and Tb/Eu complexes at different ratios using a single host. The complexes were found to be suitable as ratiometric luminescent thermometers in the temperature range of 160 K to 380 K, with reasonably good Sensitivity and Uncertainty. The thermometer's sensitivity and uncertainty were improved significantly using bimetallic Tb and Eu host-guest complex. Calculation using host and Eu emission ratio was found to give better thermometer parameters than the commonly reported Tb and Eu emission ratio. Thus, using a single host, we were able to synthesise different lanthanide complexes which can sense temperature and we were able to improve the thermometer parameters using multiple lanthanides in a single host. This research will enable the scientific community to reexamine the applicability of the unexplored host-guest Lanthanide complexes.

Abstract:A mixed lanthanide metal-organic frameworks Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022) were synthesized by the simple solvothermal method and its temperature sensing was studied emphatically. The 2′-fluoro-[1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-3,3′′,5,5′′-tetracarboxylic acid (H4FTPTC) can efficiently sensitize Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions effectively, and it transfers the energy to Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions through resonance coupling. Accordingly, so Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022) can exhibit strong characteristic fluorescence of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The Ce1-xTbxFTPTC (x=0.042, 0.022), as a proportional type luminescent thermometer shows excellent performance in the temperature range (313K-473K).

Abstract:Strategies for the rational design of lanthanide luminescent thermometers towards high relative temperature sensitivity as well as wide and adjustable sensing range are required for practical applications. We present the methodology of controlling the thermometric parameters of mixed-lanthanide Eu III /Tb III coordination systems which are broadly explored as ratiometric optical thermometers due to their thermosensitive 4f-4f emissive transitions. We incorporated these lanthanide ions into coordination polymers utilizing cyanido metalloligands, namely tetracyanidometallates of Pt II and Pd II , as molecular bridges. We report the series of hybrid coordination polymers of the general formula of {[Ln(H 2 O) 4 (terpyO 3 )] 2 [M(CN) 4 ]}[M(CN) 4 ] 2 ·8H 2 O ( Ln 2 M 3 , Ln = Eu, Tb, Gd; M = Pt, Pd; terpyO 3 = 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine N,N',N"-trioxide). They exhibit red-to-green Eu III - and Tb III -centered emission sensitized by terpyO 3 ligands and [M II (CN) 4 ] 2– ions, and tuned by the Eu-to-Tb metal ratio. Moreover, they show strong temperature variation of the Eu-to-Tb emission intensities ratio, the resulting emission color, and the related emission lifetimes. The materials of the optimized Eu-to-Tb metal ratio, Eu 0.6 Tb 1.4 Pt 3 and Eu 0.6 Tb 1.4 Pd 3 , were employed as optical thermometers utilizing the ratios between the Eu-and-Tb emission intensities and their emission lifetimes. The best thermometry performance, represented by the relative thermal sensitivity ( S r ) above 1% K –1 for the broadest T -range of 181–300 K, and the highest maximal S r of 3.26% K –1 (at 239 K), was found for the emission-lifetime-based thermometry of Eu 0.6 Tb 1.4 Pt 3 . The temperature ranges of good ( S r > 1% K –1 ) and highest accessible Sr within the whole series of materials are dependent on the applied polycyanidometallate which was correlated with the transition-metal-dependent energies of the vibrational modes of the terminal and bridging cyanido ligands as well as other components, terpyO 3 and water molecules. The selected vibrations govern critical emission thermal deactivation pathways indicating that cyanido metal complexes serve as efficient molecular modulators for the characteristics and the resulting application window of lanthanide-based luminescent thermometry.

Abstract:In this work, based on two ligands of 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid (2,4-DFBA) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), a series of new lanthanide complexes [Ln2(2,4-DFBA)6phen2, Ln = Tb 1a, Eu 1b, Gd 1c) and Tb,Eu co-doped complex [2, Tb1.976Eu0.0244(2,4-DFBA)6phen2] were successfully synthesized. It was found that 2 is an interesting multichannel readout pattern and self-calibrated temperature sensor, with a wide temperature sensing range in 77–300 K. It shows a high sensitivity up to 2.3%/K.

Abstract:A three-dimensional terbium(III) coordination polymer of formula [Tb(bttb) 0.5 (2,5-pzdc) 0.5 ] n (1) [H 4 bttb = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4'-carboxyphenyl)benzene and H 2 -2,5-pzdc = 2,5-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid] was obtained under hydrothermal conditions. The bttb 4− tetraanion in 1 adopts the bridging and chelating-bridging pseudo-oxo coordination modes while the 2,5-pzdc 2− dianion exhibits a rather unusual bis-bidentate bridging pseudo-oxo coordination mode, both ligands being responsible for the stiffness of the resulting 3D structure. The solid-state photoluminescent measurements illustrate that 1 exhibits remarkable green luminescence emission, the most intense band occurring in the region of 550 nm ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 ) with lifetimes at the millisecond scale. Thermometric performances of 1 reveal a maximum relative sensitivity (Sm) of 0.76 % K −1 at 295 K (δT= 0.05 K), constituting a Tb III ratiometric solid luminescent thermometer over the physiological temperature range. Variable-temperature static (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements for 1 in the temperature range 2.0-300 K show the expected behavior for the depopulation of the splitted mJ levels of the 7 F 7 ground state of the magnetically anisotropic terbium(III) ion plus a weak antiferromagnetic interaction through the carboxylate bridges. No significant out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility signals were observed for 1 in the temperature range 2.0-10.0 K, either in the absence or presence of a static dc magnetic field.
