Abstract:Low-temperature methanation allows the near-equilibrium conversion of CO2 to methane at atmospheric pressure, promising remarkable energy efficiency and economic interests. However, it remains challenging for the efficient catalytic activation of CO2 at low temperature owing to the kinetic limitations of hydrogenation intermediates. Here we report that Ni-based inverse catalysts composed of oxide nano-islands loaded on metallic Ni support show significant activity advantages over traditional Ni/oxide with the same composition. The optimized CeZrOx/Ni catalyst realizes ~90% CO2 conversion and >99% CH4 selectivity at 200 °C and atmospheric pressure; it also exhibits excellent long-term stability and overheating/start–stop cyclic operation stability. Mechanistic studies show that the inverse interface effectively modulates H2 and CO2 coverage and alters the configuration of adsorbed oxygenates, which benefits the hydrogenation of surface intermediates. Energy and economic analyses demonstrate that the low-temperature CO2 methanation process powered by inverse catalysts potentially reduces both capital investment and methane production costs. Low-temperature CO2 methanation processes have potential for improved energy efficiency due to high equilibrium conversion but are generally limited by poor catalyst activity. Here the authors report an inverse CeZrOx/Ni catalyst that realizes high low-temperature (200 °C) methanation activity at ambient pressure.

Abstract:CO2 methanation is gaining renewed attention due to the emerging application needs such as the power-to-gas concept and long-term space exploration missions. Maximizing the amounts of interfacial sites generally regarded as the efficient active sites is considered to be one of the most direct means to enhance catalytic activity but few breakthroughs have been made. Here, Eu3+ is introduced to Ni/CeO2 to promote the Ni-CeO2 interaction, resulting in a remarkable low-temperature CO2 methanation activity. Structural characterization indicates that the Ni/CeEu(9:1) catalyst achieves higher Ni dispersion compared to Ni/CeO2, which consequently generates more interfacial sites. More interfacial sites enhance the proportions of bidentate carbonates closer to interfacial sites as a faster hydrogenated species during the catalytic process, leading to enhanced low-temperature CO2 methanation activity over the Ni/CeEu(9:1) catalyst. This work provides a chemical strategy to enhance the amounts of active sites and bring insights into the origin of enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:The metal-support interaction is of critical importance to enhance the catalytic activity and selectivity. However, it is still challenging to construct an appropriate interaction starting from the catalyst fabrication and/or activation. We herein established low-temperature treatment of Ni2+ ions impregnated on ceria in reductive atmosphere and reduction–oxidation cycles as effective approachs to regulate the metal-support interaction and raise the catalytic performance in the CO2 methanation. The proposed construction approach yielded Ni/CeO2 that displayed highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles in contact with CeO2 (111) and (100) facet, higher density of surface oxygen vacancies and larger amounts of weak basic sites relative to the reference samples, which increased the capacity for H2 and CO2 adsorption/activation. The interaction resulted in appreciably (2–3 fold) higher activity in the CO2 methanation with maintaining almost full selectivity to CH4 and high stability. Coverage of Ni surface by CeO2− x thin layer as a typical structure of strong metal-support interaction resulting from high-temperature reduction, can be alleviated via reduction–oxidation cycles. We also demonstrate the activation treatment-determined metal-support interaction effect can generally extend to (TiO2 and ZrO2) supported Ni catalysts.

Abstract:CO2 methanation has attracted considerable attention as a promising strategy for recycling CO2 and generating valuable methane. This study presents a niobium-doped CeO2-supported Ni catalyst (Ni/NbCe), which demonstrates remarkable performance in terms of CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity, even when operating at a low temperature of 250 °C. Structural analysis reveals the incorporation of Nb species into the CeO2 lattice, resulting in the formation of a Nb-Ce-O solid solution. Compared with the Ni/CeO2 catalyst, this solid solution demonstrates an improved spatial distribution. To comprehend the impact of the Nb-Ce-O solid solution on refining the electronic properties of the Ni-Ce interfacial sites, facilitating H2 activation, and accelerating the hydrogenation of CO2* into HCOO*, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted. These investigations shed light on the mechanism through which the activity of CO2 methanation is enhanced, which differs from the commonly observed CO* pathway triggered by oxygen vacancies (OV). Consequently, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between the electronic properties of the catalyst's active sites and the reaction pathway in CO2 methanation over Ni-based catalysts.

Abstract:Interfaces between active metal and metal oxide in a heterogenous catalyst often play an important role in catalysis. In this work, we intentionally synthesized a series of inverse CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni model catalysts with the formation of controlled CeO2-Ni and Cr2O3-Ni interfacial structures and investigated the roles of the oxide-metal interfaces in CO2 methanation performance through excluding the normal support effect. Experimental and DFT calculation results reveal that the formate pathway tends to occur on the catalyst with only CeO2-Ni interfaces. The Cr2O3-Ni interface formed after introducing Cr oxide alters the nearby CeO2-Ni interface by electron transfer through Ni, which brings an additional reaction pathway (CO pathway) on CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni. Furthermore, it shows a relatively lower CO2 absorption energy and activation energy barrier for CO2 dissociation to CO at the Cr2O3-Ni interface, favorable for CO2 activation and further hydrogenation, thus leading to excellent low-temperature activity.

Abstract:CO2 absorption and activation play key roles in the process of CO2 methanation, but revealing the mechanism and synergistic effects are still challenges, especially in some complicated routes. Herein, an optimized hollow Ni/CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst is shown to be capable of CO2 absorption and activation, the performance could be attributed to the strong synergistic effects among each component. In addition, the respective role was verified that the Co3O4 and CeO2 contributed to the CO2 adsorption and subsequently coupled with Ni for CO2 activation. Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS were used to demonstrate the hydrogenation mechanisms, and the promotion of CO2 absorption and CH4 selectivity was confirmed in Ni/CeO2-Co3O4. The DFT results verified the synergistic effects of the established catalysts, which could also be a universal strategy for the catalysts designation.

Abstract:The Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts with different Ni doping amounts (5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, 20 wt%, and 25 wt%) are prepared by the impregnation technique and used as CO2 methanation catalysts in this work. The effects of various Ni doping loading on CO2 methanation catalytic performance at low temperatures were investigated in this catalytic system. The results show that the catalyst with 15 wt% Ni doping shows the best catalytic performance. Since the heated sintering of Ni nanoparticles was prevented efficiently by CO2 methanation, these mesoporous catalysts exhibit excellent stability. Therefore, the catalyst is expected to be an efficient CO2 methanation catalyst at low temperatures.

Abstract:CO methanation on nickel-based catalysts is often plagued by low selectivity and stability due to aggregation and sintering of nickel and carbon deposition on the catalyst surface. In this work, we develop a 10 %CeO 2 -20 %NiO/p-SiO 2 nanosphere catalyst with porous structure that presents an improved CH 4 selectivity and yield in contrast with the reported catalysts. Moreover, experimental data coupled with density functional theory calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies in under-stoichiometric CeO 2- x are maximized through the reductive pretreatment before the reaction, acting as the mobile reactive sites and participating CO methanation. That is, oxygen vacancies assist to adsorb CO molecules, weaken the CO binding strength, further break CO bond to improve CH 4 formation. Afterward, oxygen is filled into the oxygen vacancy, and carbon is hydrogenated to generate CH 4 molecules. These findings may shed light on the role of ceria as a promoter, especially for heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Abstract:CO2 methanation is of great significance to CO2 utilization. However, it is challenging to prepare Ni-based catalysts with superior low-temperature activity via a simple method. In this work, a highly active Ni/CeO2/SiO2 catalyst is developed by a combustion-impregnation method, and the synergistic effect of active sites for H2 and CO2 activation are studied. The research results show that highly dispersed Ni particles (6 nm) are obtained by this method with an instantaneous reaction. As a result of the increased number of Ni active sites, the catalyst exhibits improved catalytic activity. Moreover, addition of CeO2 promoter further improves the low-temperature activity. First, it enhances the catalyst reducibility, creating more Ni active sites for H2 dissociation. Second, the surface oxygen vacancies formed on CeO2 facilitate CO2 activation. Therefore, the best performance of 63% CO2 conversion and 99% CH4 selectivity at 250 °C is achieved on the Ni-5Ce catalyst with small Ni particles and optimal amount of CeO2 promoter. With higher CeO2 content, Ni-7.5Ce catalyst displays decreased catalyst reducibility and catalytic activity. Therefore, it can be concluded that a proper ratio between both types of sites is crucial for CO2 methanation.

Abstract:We facilely fabricated the mesoporous Ce-Zr solid solutions (Ce/Zr molar ratio = 0-100%) with excellent textural properties and employed them as the supports of the Ni-based catalysts for CO2 methanation. These supported catalysts were systematically measured by various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscope (TEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), etc. In this catalytic system, the influencing factors of the supports on the promotion of the low-temperature catalytic performances toward CO2 methanation were carefully investigated. Besides, temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) and in-situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of the CO2 methanation were also carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism and the possible reaction intermediates. The kinetic study were also conducted to investigate the apparent activation energies of the CO2 methanation over these Ni-based catalysts with different supports. The influencing factors on the stabilization of the metallic Ni active sites were also investigated by conducting the 40 h stability test over the 15Ni/M-Ce80Zr20 and 15Ni/SiO2 catalysts. It was found that the Ni-based catalysts supported on the mesoporous Ce-Zr solid solutions were provided with advanced low-temperature activity owing to the redox property of the support, which could tune the reaction intermediates and decrease the apparent activation energy during the CO2 methanation.

Abstract:This study reports boosting the catalytic activity for CO2 methanation at low temperatures (<300 degrees C) through construction of hollow Ni/CeO2 and modulation of Ni-CeO2 interaction by calcination. Hollow Ni/CeO2 catalysts exhibit smaller Ni and CeO2 nanoparticles, leading to an increased number of Ni-CeO2 interfaces, improved hydrogen spillover, increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and exclusive weak basic sites, indicating different metal-support interaction strengths compared to conventional Ni/CeO2. DFT calculation and CO2-TPD reveal that CO2 over the hollow Ni/CeO2 catalyst can be adsorbed and dissociated into CO* at the Ni-CeO2 interface with surrounding oxygen vacancies. In-situ DRIFTS analysis reveals an enhanced CO* pathway on hollow Ni/ CeO2. These factors lead to enhanced catalytic activity at low temperatures, with a high CO2 conversion (64.1%) at 225 degrees C, significantly higher than Ni/CeO2 and most previously reported catalysts. In essence, this work provides an effective approach to constructing high-performance, low-temperature methanation Ni-based catalysts.
Enhancing the low-temperature CO2 methanation over Ni/La-CeO2 catalyst: The effects of surface oxygen vacancy and basic site on the catalytic performance

Abstract:This work reports a strategy to promote the low-temperature CO2 methanation on the Ni-based catalyst by tuning the surface oxygen vacancy and medium-strength basic sites of the CeO2 support and thus changing the reaction pathway. La species was introduced into CeO2 support and calcined at 600 °C (CeO2-La-600) to form a La-Ce-O solid solution with a thin La2O2CO3 layer on the surface, generating more basic sites and oxygen vacancies. This unique structure facilitated the adsorption and direct dissociation of CO2. Over Ni/CeO2-La-600, the reaction follows the HCOO* and *CO pathways, while over Ni/CeO2-600, the reaction occurs via the HCOO* pathway only. The decomposition of CO2* to *CO is energetically more favorable than hydrogenation to HCOO* on Ni/CeO2-La-600, resulting in its higher catalytic performance at low temperatures. This work unravels the complex interplay among oxygen vacancy, basic site, and reaction pathway in CO2 methanation over the Ni-based catalysts.

Abstract:The promising realm of carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion offers a compelling avenue to advance environmental sustainability. This study introduces a novel approach by utilizing frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) for efficient low-temperature CO2 methanation. Through a tailored ammonium bicarbonate (AB) precipitation method, we engineered Ni/CeO2 catalysts abundant in FLPs. Various morphologies, including aggregated flakes, broom-like structures, and irregular granules, were achieved by modulating the AB-to-cerium molar ratio. The distinctive broom-like Ni/(0.06AB)CeO2 catalyst, comprised of nanorods with abundant FLPs, exhibited outstanding low-temperature CO2 methanation performance: 67.5 % CO2 conversion, 99.6 % CH4 selectivity, and 0.27 s−1 CO2 turnover frequency (TOFCO2) at 240 °C, with excellent stability in a 100-h test at 300 °C. Furthermore, leveraging in-situ DRIFTS and in-situ Raman techniques, and DFT study, we unraveled CO2 hydrogenation pathways and found a dual interplay of CO and formate pathways in the low-temperature methanation over Ni/(0.06AB)CeO2 catalyst.

Unveiling the promotion effect of ethylenediamine on preparation of Ni/CeO2 catalyst for low-temperature CO2 methanation

Abstract:Cost-effective CO2 conversion to value-added products remains a great challenge until present. Here, we have discovered that the ethylenediamine (EDA) assisted preparation of Ni/CeO2 catalyst remarkably promotes the CO2 methanation performance at low temperatures. The Ni/CeO2-EDA catalyst exhibits a CO2 conversion efficiency of 84% and a CH4 selectivity of 98% at 225 °C, and no visible decline of CO2 conversion is observed even after 70h of continuous reaction. The involvement of EDA is shown to effectively result in a more uniform distribution of Ni species, coupled with a reduction in particle size. In addition, the smaller particle size of Ni results in a rapid dissociative adsorption of hydrogen and H2 spillover. Accordingly, oxygen vacancies on the CeO2 surface are created and adequate H atoms are engendered for CO2 hydrogenation. Furthermore, both the formate and CO pathways occur simultaneously on the Ni/CeO2-EDA catalyst, enhancing the low-temperature methanation activity. Herein, the EDA-assisted strategy provides an effective methodology in terms of well-dispersion and highly active catalysts for low-temperature CO2 methanation.

Abstract:A Ni/CeO2 catalyst was prepared via decomposition of nickel precursor by gas discharge plasma, followed by hydrogen reduction thermally. The activity of the obtained catalyst reaches the highest level towards CO2 methanation with methane selectivity above 99 % at reaction temperatures lower than 300 °C. For example, the CH4 formation rate at 275 °C is 100.3 μmol gcat −1 s−1, higher than the reported catalysts at the same reaction temperature. Characterization results indicate that the plasma decomposition leads to an interfacial structure where Ni atoms bind with O atoms from ceria. A strong metal-support interaction is caused. Rich interfacial Ni-CeO2 sites are thus formed with excellent redox property. The unique interfacial structure confines small nickel particles on the ceria surface, exposing more metallic Ni as active sites for splitting H2. Therefore, the plasma prepared Ni/CeO2 catalyst shows balanced active sites for H2 splitting and CO2 activation, improving low temperature catalytic activity significantly.

Abstract:The effect of different cations (M=Zr, Sn or Ti) doping on ceria supported nickel (Ni-Ce0.8M0.2O2) catalysts and their performance in the CO2 methanation reaction has been investigated. Among the prepared catalysts, the Ni-CeO2 (CN) catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with a CO2 conversion of 62.9% at 400 °C. The selectivity on Ni-Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 (CZN) remained above 98.4% from 200 to 400 °C. As confirmed by in-situ DRIFTS, the dissociative adsorption of H2 mainly proceeds on Ni, by-product CO is mainly assigned to the releasing of weak-binding linearly adsorbed CO on nickel, which is from the hydrogenation of formates with adsorbed H. The CO-suppressing effect is attributed to the strong adsorption of carbon monoxide on nickel via the forming of bridging carbonyls. It was found that CO2 is adsorbed on the catalysts to form carbonate, bicarbonate and formate species. The formate species could be further hydrogenated by dissociated H and then finally release methane.

Abstract:CO2 as a raw feed combined with renewable hydrogen for the production of useful chemicals and alternative energy products is one of the solutions to environmental and energy problems. In this study, a series of Ni-xCeO2/MCM-41 catalysts with a nickel content of 20wt% were prepared through deposition precipitation method for CO2 methanation. Different characterization methods, including BET, XRD, TEM, SEM, H2-TPR and H2-TPD were applied to help explore the influence mechanism of CeO2 on Ni/MCM-41 in CO2 methanation. It was found that all CeO2-promoted catalysts exhibited enhanced catalytic activity when compared to Ni/MCM-41. The catalyst modified with 20wt% CeO2 showed the best catalytic performance, with CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity of 85.6% and 99.8%, respectively, at the temperature of 380°C under atmospheric pressure. The synergetic effects among Ni0 active sites, the promoter and the support, including nickel dispersion improvement and increased CO2 adsorption sites due to the addition of CeO2, were considered as important factors for high reactivity of the promoted catalysts. The stability test showed that the promoted catalyst maintained its high reactivity after 30h.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of support morphology and oxygen vacancy on the low temperature catalytic activity of Ni-based catalyst for CO2 methanation, three Ni/CeO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method, in which CeO2 materials with different morphology of flowerlike, nanowire, and bulk were used. The characterization results showed that the morphology of CeO2 exhibited a significant effect on the preferential exposed crystal planes, which led to the change of oxygen vacancy concentration and metal dispersion, resulting in the enhancement of catalytic activity at low temperature. Among all catalysts, the nanowire-like Ni/CeO2 catalyst (Ni/W) showed the highest CO2 conversion due to its enhanced oxygen vacancy concentration and CO2 adsorption capacity of the catalyst. In situ DRIFTS experiment showed that the intermediate product of Ni/W catalyst reaction route was formate. In a 100 h-400 degrees C-lifetime test, Ni/W catalyst also showed excellent long-term stability. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The Ni-based catalysts have a wide range of industrial applications due to its low cost, but its activity of CO2 methanation is not comparable to that of precious metal catalysts. In order to solve this problem, Ni-based mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solution catalysts doped with rare earth were prepared by the incipient impregnation method and directly used as catalysts for the methanation of CO2. The catalysts were characterized systematically by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and so on. The results show that Ni is highly dispersed in the mesoporous skeleton, forming a strong metal-skeleton interaction. Therefore, under the condition of CO2 methanation, the hot sintering of metallic Ni nanoparticles can be effectively inhibited so that these mesoporous catalysts have good stability without obvious deactivation. The rare earth doping can significantly increase the surface alkalinity of catalyst and enhance the chemisorption of CO2. In addition, the rare earth elements also act as electron modifiers to help activate CO2 molecules. Therefore, the rare earth doped Ni-based mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solution catalysts are expected to be an efficient catalyst for the methanation of CO2 at low-temperature.
