Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:2,5-Furandimethanol (FDM), a promising diol, is produced traditionally via hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from raw sugars. Because of the costly separation process and the unstable nature of HMF, direct production of FDM from raw sugars, especially polysaccharides, is highly desirable. In this work, we developed a cascade catalytic system (NiCl2/FA/Co-NC) to achieve the one-pot production of FDM from glucose and di/polysaccharides, in which NiCl2 was used as the Lewis acid, N-doped carbon confined cobalt (Co-NC) as the hydrogenation site, and formic acid as both the Bronsted acid and hydrogen donor. Under the optimal conditions of 160 degrees C for 6 h, similar to 60% FDM yield together with full glucose conversion was achieved, and Co-NC was recyclable five times without a noticeable deactivation. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (E-a) of glucose conversion in the NiCl2/FA/Co-NC catalytic system was approximately similar to 87.7 kJ mol(-1). More importantly, this new catalytic system is also highly efficient for yielding 40-60% FDM from cheap high fructose syrup and di/polysaccharides in one pot under such mild reaction conditions. We believe that this work can lead a pioneering step forward for raw biomass transformation via multi-step coupling strategies, thus showing great potential for industrial applications.

Abstract:5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is an important platform chemical, but the large scale production is limited by its instability. In this research, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), derived from HMF, was produced directly from cellulose in formic acid reaction system with a yield of 33.4mol% at 150°C for 2h. Among numerous metal salt catalysts screened in this study, alkali metal bromides were found to be effective in catalyzing cellulose conversion to FMF. Bromide anions facilitation of the esterification of HMF to form FMF was confirmed. In addition, the effects of water, acid and other reaction parameters also were investigated when NaBr was used as the catalyst. Up to 2% of water or acid in this reaction system did not impact on the FMF yield. Increasing the temperature for every 20°C from 130°C to 170°C halved the reaction time but did not change the maximum yield. FMF was more hydrophobic and thermostable than HMF, which made it easier to be recovered. In a two-step process, FMF with a recovery of 29.4mol% and purity of 97mol% was obtained.

Abstract:<p>Biomass is the sole renewable organic carbon resource in nature. Conversion of Biomass can produce a series of platform molecules. As an essential multi-purpose bioderived furanic platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives due to its rich chemistry and potential availability, which is an ideal renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This review highlights recent advances in the development of efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of HMF, especially heterogeneous catalysts. Heterogeneous catalysts have advantages in facile separation and recovery, tunable performance by adjusting catalyst structures. Simultaneously, we mainly focus on the application of downstream products in material monomers, pharmaceutical intermediates, and fuels. Furthermore, a few potential research trends are also proposed, in order to provide some useful ideas for the further exploration of the utilization and conversion of HMF in a much simple, efficient, and economical way.</p>

Abstract:5-(Chloromethyl)furfural (CMF), as a new platform molecular, has become a hot topic in the field of biorefinery. Herein, the one-pot conversion of CMF to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) in the water phase was demonstrated for the first time. A 91% BHMF yield was obtained over Ru/CuOx catalyst, and BHMF was mainly produced by the consecutive hydrolysis and hydrogenation of CMF with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as an intermediate. Kinetic studies revealed that the conversion of HMF to BHMF was the rate-determining step. Remarkably, the characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the lower electron density of Ru NPs in Ru/CuOx catalyst, resulting in a larger adsorption energy and a smaller free energy difference for the formation of alcohols. The present findings offered a new pathway for biomass-derived diol production through CMF as a potential source.

Abstract:The direct and simultaneous production of furan chemicals from raw straw in an efficient deep eutectic solvents/methyl isobutyl ketone (DES/MIBK) biphasic pretreatment system was performed in this study. The deep eutectic solvent was formed by choline chloride (ChCl) as hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA) and lactic acid (LA) as hydrogen-bond donor (HBD). The effects of straw type and particle size, DES composition (ChCl/LA, molar ratio), reaction time, and temperature on the yield of furan chemicals were investigated. The maximum yield was 25.26%, 21.33%, and 39.21% for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 5.26%, 9.89%, and 15.48% for 2, 5-furandicarboxaldehyde (DFF) coupled with 5.03%, 5.38% and 8.93% for 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), respectively, when sweet potato, sorghum, and corn straw were used as the raw biomass. After conversion, the proportion of cellulose as well as its crystallinity index significantly increased. The corn straw was observed as an ideal feedstock with the highest yield of furan chemicals among the tested three raw straws under this conversion system. Results from this study show a simple and operability system without extra catalyst addition for lignocellulosic biomass conversion, which provides new information for direct furan production from raw straw.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural are promising platform molecules which can be converted to fuel intermediates and hydrocarbon fuels. Herein, one-step, direct conversion of the carbohydrates in never treated biomass to HMF and furfural in a microwave reactor was investigated. The influence of reaction temperature, time, feedstock, addition of Lewis and Brønsted acids, solvent and solvent to aqueous ratio were studied to find the optimum process conditions to maximize the yields of furfurals. The reaction conditions of 200 °C for 5 min with 33 mM HCl and 8 mM AlCl3 using a dioxane/water (4:1) miscible solvent system were found to be the most conducive for direct dehydration of the glucan and hemicelluloses present in untreated poplar wood to furfural and HMF in yields of 91 and 69%, respectively. Furfural could be easily produced in yields greater than 80%, and once formed, it was found to be stable under the various process conditions explored. In contrast, HMF yields varied with both reaction time and temperature, as it readily underwent rehydration to levulinic acid in yields approaching 25–30% at increased reaction severity. The additions of both Brønsted (HCl) and Lewis (AlCl3) acids in catalytic amounts, i.e., 33 and 8 mM, respectively, were required to maximize the yield of furfurals. Reactions were also performed on other feedstocks (corn stover, switchgrass, loblolly pine, and pure cellulose) to investigate the effect of feedstock type on furfurals yields. Results showed that HMF and furfural yields were primarily dependent on hexosan and pentosan loading regardless of the type of feedstock. In addition, biomass physical features, such as crystallinity or the presence of other biomass constituents, such as lignin, had little influence on furfurals yields.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is an abundant renewable energy resource. Hence, the conversion of biomass into fuel and platform chemicals has recently attracted considerable attention. Furfural is an important platform product, that can be produced from xylan-rich lignocellulosic biomass. Hemicellulose undergoes two stages, hydrolysis and dehydration, resulting in the production of furfural. In this review, the one-step and two-step strategies for furfural production and the subsequent techno-economic evaluation of the integration of furfural and other coproducts are presented. The direct one-step production of furfural requires a one-time investment in severe pretreatment conditions or the use of more chemicals, whereas the two-step production requires the separation of additional prehydrolysates, followed by more drastic treatment conditions. In both strategies, water flow, steam flow, organic solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) or ionic liquids (ILs) can be used as solvent phases to hydrolyze hemicellulose. Lewis acid and Brønsted acid catalysts can effectively convert hemicellulose-derived pentose into furfural. A biphasic solvent system can effectively prevent the degradation of furfural in water, thus increasing the yield and selectivity of furfural. The techno-economy assessment results indicate that biorefineries are transitioning to adopting an integrate model of co-production of furfural and other products. Alternative green approaches are increasingly being adopted to make the furfural industry more sustainable and profitable.

Abstract:Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth but under-utilized. The effective conversion of chitin biomass to useful chemicals is a promising strategy to make full use of chitin. Among chitin-derived compounds, some furan derivatives, typically 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran, have shown great potential as platform compounds in future industries. In this review, different catalytic systems for the synthesis of nitrogen-free 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and nitrogen-containing 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran from chitin or its derivatives are summarized comparatively. Some efficient technologies for enhancing chitin biomass conversion have been introduced. Last but not least, future challenges are discussed to enable the production of valuable compounds from chitin biomass via greener processes.
