Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Effect of Ce/Zr Atomic Ratio on the TWC Properties of PdO/CexZr1-xO2(x=0-1.0) Catalysts

Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

Abstract:A series of Pt–Pd bimetallic catalysts supported on CeO2–ZrO2–La2O3 mixed oxides were synthesized through the conventional impregnation method. Three-way catalytic performance evaluations along with detailed physio-chemical characterizations were carried out to establish possible structure–activity correlations. Results show that on the one hand, different Pt/Pd ratios can strongly affect the TWC behaviors of Pt–Pd/CZL catalysts by modulating the synergistic effect between Pt and Pd. On the other hand, higher Pt/Pd ratio also favors better dispersion of precious metals. Such improved precious metals (PM) dispersion can promote the metal-support interaction and increase the surface oxygen vacancies concentration, thereby raising the dynamic oxygen storage/release capacity, improving the redox ability as well as enhancing the thermal stability of the Pt–Pd/CZL catalyst. Moreover, the strong metal-support interaction can augment surface oxygen vacancy concentration, thereby benefiting low temperature CO and NO reaction via augmented NO x adsorption and nitrate conversion.

Abstract:Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 catalyst was pretreated in different atmosphere respectively, and characterized by CO chemical adsorption, XPS, HR-TEM, H2-TPR, Raman, OSC and in situ DRIFTs to investigate the effect of the structure properties of PdOx species on the catalytic performance for CO, HC and NOx elimination. The results show that Pd/CZ catalyst pretreated in air atmosphere has higher oxidation activity of HC due to having high Pd dispersion and strong interaction between PdOx and CZ support. Pd/CZ-H catalyst pretreated in reducing atmosphere exhibits better catalytic performance of NOx elimination because of having relatively big Pd particle size, more Pd species in metallic state and higher concentration of oxygen vacancies. While for the Pd/CZ-RG catalyst pretreated in reactant atmosphere, strong adsorption of HC species on the surface of catalysts would lead to a part of active sites being covered, which inhibits HC and NO conversions.
Optimizing the Synergy Between Alloy and Alloy-Oxide Interface for CO Oxidation in Bimetallic Catalysts.

Abstract:Creating synergetic metal-oxide interfaces is a promising strategy to promote the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. However, this strategy has been mainly applied to monometallic catalysts, while scarcely applied to alloy catalysts. In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the synergetic alloy-oxide interfaces in the bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. A series of Pt1Cox/Al2O3 catalysts with various Co/Pt molar ratios with x ranging from 0.5 to 3.8 was synthesized via a facile wet-chemistry strategy. Among them, the Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance for CO oxidation, with the lowest CO complete conversion temperature of -10 °C and the highest mass specific rate of 2.61 (mol CO) h-1 (g Pt)-1. From in situ X-ray absorption fine structure and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy studies, the superior catalytic performance of Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 originates from the optimal length of the three-dimensional alloy-oxide perimeter sites. We further extended this strategy to other bimetallic systems of Pt-Fe and Pt-Ni, which also show similar structural properties and remarkable promotional effects on the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Bimetallic and multi-component catalysts typically exhibit composition-dependent activity and selectivity, and when optimized often outperform single-component catalysts. Here we used ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and in situ and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the origin of composition dependence observed in the catalytic activities of monodisperse CoPd bimetallic nanocatalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the catalysis process induced a reconstruction of the catalysts, leaving CoOx on the nanoparticle surface. The synergy between Pd and CoOx coexisting on the surface promotes the catalytic activity of the bimetallic catalysts. This synergistic effect can be optimized by tuning the Co/Pd ratios in the nanoparticle synthesis, and it reaches a maximum at compositions near Co0.24Pd0.76, which achieves complete CO conversion at the lowest temperature. Our combined AP-XPS and TEM studies provide direct observation of the surface evolution of the bimetallic nanoparticles under catalytic conditions and show how this evolution correlates with catalytic properties.

Abstract:Ce0.67Zr0.33 02, Ce0.67Zr0.3302-Al203 and -y-Al203 supported Pd catalysts (designated as Pd/CZ, Pd/CZA and Pd/Al2 03) have been characterized by XRD, CO chemisorption, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, HRTEM, H2-TPR, 02-TPSR and catalytic performance test. The results show that the small Pd0, particles dispersed in CZ would promote the conversion of HC, CO and NO2, while the Pd0, particles dispersed in Al203 promote the conversion of NO in the light-off process. Pd0, species mainly disperse on Al203-rich grains surface for fresh Pd/CZA catalyst, but easily migrate onto CZ-rich grains surface due to the strong interaction between Pd and ceria-based oxide under high temperature reaction conditions. And it promotes the thermal stability of Pd 0 species and resilience of Pd to Pd 0, therefore enhances the catalytic performance for HC, CO and NO elimination. Meanwhile, the interaction between CZ and Al203 can be enhanced after aging treatment, resulting in increasing the thermal stability of Pd/CZA catalyst. 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Carbon Monoxide and Propylene Catalytic Oxidation Activity of Noble Metals (M = Pt, Pd, Ag, and Au) Loaded on the Surface of Ce0.875Zr0.125O2 (110)

Abstract:With the advances in engine technology, the exhaust gas temperature of automobiles has further reduced, which in turn leads to an increase in the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HCs). In order to understand the influence of CeO2-based catalysts loaded with different noble metals on the catalytic oxidation activity of CO and HCs, this study constructed catalyst models of Ce0.875Zr0.125O2 (100) surfaces loaded with Pt, Pd, Ag, and Au. The electronic density and state density structures of the catalysts were analyzed, and the reaction energy barriers for CO oxidation and C3H6 dehydrogenation oxidation on the catalyst surfaces were also calculated. Furthermore, the activity sequences of the catalysts were explored. The results revealed that after loading Pt, Pd, Ag, and Au atoms onto the catalyst surfaces, these noble metal atoms exhibited strong interactions with the catalyst surfaces, and electron transfer occurred between the noble metal atoms and the catalyst surfaces. Loading with noble metals can enhance the catalytic activity of CO oxidation, but it has little effect on the dehydrogenation oxidation of C3H6. Of the different noble metals, loading with Pd exhibits the best catalytic activity for both CO and C3H6 oxidation. This study elucidated the influence of noble metal doping on the catalytic activity of catalysts at the molecular level, providing theoretical guidance for the design of a new generation of green and efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized on TiO2 support on the planar substrate as well as on high surface area SiO2 gel by atomic layer deposition to identify the catalytic performance improvement after the formation of Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles by surface analysis techniques. From X-ray absorption near edge spectra of Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles, d-orbital hybridization between Pt 5d and Pd 4d was observed, which is responsible for charge transfer from Pt to Pd. Moreover, it was found from the in situ grazing incidence X-ray absorption spectroscopy study that Pt-Pd nanoparticles have a Pd shell/Pt core structure with CO adsorption. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy on Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles showed that Pd resonant intensity is enhanced compared to that of Pd monometallic nanoparticles because of d-orbital hybridization and electronic states broadening of Pt and Pd compared monometallic catalysts, which results in catalytic performance improvement.
Large-Pore Mesoporous CeO2 -Zro2 Solid Solutions with In-Pore Confined Pt Nanoparticles for Enhanced CO Oxidation.

Abstract:Active and stable catalysts are highly desired for converting harmful substances (e.g., CO, NOx ) in exhaust gases of vehicles into safe gases at low exhaust temperatures. Here, a solvent evaporation-induced co-assembly process is employed to design ordered mesoporous Cex Zr1- x O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solutions by using high-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene as the template. The obtained mesoporous Cex Zr1- x O2 possesses high surface area (60-100 m2 g-1 ) and large pore size (12-15 nm), enabling its great capacity in stably immobilizing Pt nanoparticles (4.0 nm) without blocking pore channels. The obtained mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 catalyst exhibits superior CO oxidation activity with a very low T100 value of 130 °C (temperature of 100% CO conversion) and excellent stability due to the rich lattice oxygen vacancies in the Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 framework. The simulated catalytic evaluations of CO oxidation combined with various characterizations reveal that the intrinsic high surface oxygen mobility and well-interconnected pore structure of the mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8 Zr0.2 O2 catalyst are responsible for the remarkable catalytic efficiency. Additionally, compared with mesoporous Pt/Cex Zr1- x O2 -s with small pore size (3.8 nm), ordered mesoporous Pt/Cex Zr1- x O2 not only facilitates the mass diffusion of reactants and products, but also provides abundant anchoring sites for Pt nanoparticles and numerous exposed catalytically active interfaces for efficient heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Bimetallic 15 nm Pd-core Rh-shell Rh1−x Pd x nanoparticle catalysts have been synthesized and studied in CO oxidation by NO. The catalysts exhibited composition-dependent activity enhancement (synergy) in CO oxidation in high NO pressures. The observed synergetic effect is attributed to the favorable adsorption of CO on Pd in NO-rich conditions. The Pd-rich bimetallic catalysts deactivated after many hours of oxidation of CO by NO. After catalyst deactivation, product formation was proportional to the Rh molar fraction within the bimetallic nanoparticles. The deactivated catalysts were regenerated by heating the sample in UHV. This regeneration suggests that the deactivation was caused by the adsorption of nitrogen atoms on Pd sites.
Identification of Active Sites in Pt–Co Bimetallic Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.
Promotional effect of ZrO2 and WO3 on bimetallic Pt-Pd diesel oxidation catalyst

Abstract:Diesel oxidation catalysts Pt-Pd-(y)ZrO2-(z)WO3/CeZrOx-Al2O3 with total Pt & Pd loading of only 0.68 wt.% were prepared and investigated for oxidation activity and stability of CO, C3H6, and NO. Introduction of ZrO2 greatly improved low-temperature activities and retained stability especially for CO and C3H6 oxidation after treated at 800 °C. With the optimal loading amount of 6 wt% ZrO2, 2 wt% WO3 was introduced to the system and showed higher activity. Reaction temperature for 50% CO and C3H6 conversion declined to 160 and 181 °C, and the maximal NO conversion increased to 50%. By using XRD, TEM, CO chemisorption, XPS, and H2-TPR analysis, it was found that ZrO2 could inhibit aggregation of Pt and Pd, improve metal dispersion, and increase surface-chemisorbed oxygen after high-temperature treatment, accounting for promoted performance. Also, there were more reducible oxide species in ZrO2-doped catalysts. ZrO2 could induce reduction of noble metal oxides and surface ceria by weakening Pt-O-Ce interaction, which increased the ability to dissociate H2 and spillover effect of dissociated hydrogen to ceria. Doping WO3 increased metal dispersion of fresh samples and brought more Pt0 species that were active sites for oxidation reactions. Thus, ZrO2 and WO3 could be effective additives for oxidation catalysts to synergistically improve their activities and thermal stability.

Abstract:In situ exploration of the dynamic structure evolution of catalysts plays a key role in revealing reaction mechanisms and designing efficient catalysts. In this work, PtCu/MgO catalysts, synthesized via the co-impregnation method, outperforms monometallic Pt/MgO and Cu/MgO. Utilizing quasi/in-situ characterization techniques, it is discovered that there is an obvious structural evolution over PtCu/MgO from PtxCuyOz oxide cluster to PtCu alloy with surface CuOx species under different redox and CO oxidation reaction conditions. The synergistic effect between PtCu alloy and CuOx species enables good CO oxidation activity through the regulation of CO adsorption and O2 dissociation. At low temperatures, CO oxidation is predominantly catalyzed by surface CuOx species via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, in which CuOx can provide abundant active oxygen species. As the reaction temperature increases, both surface CuOx species and PtCu alloy collaborate to activate gaseous oxygen, facilitating CO oxidation mainly through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism.
Atomic Structure Evolution of Pt–Co Binary Catalysts: Single Metal Sites versus Intermetallic Nanocrystals

Abstract:Due to their exceptional catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and other crucial electrochemical reactions, PtCo intermetallic nanoparticle (NP) and single atomic (SA) Pt metal site catalysts have received considerable attention. However, their formation mechanisms at the atomic level during high-temperature annealing processes remain elusive. Here, the thermally driven structure evolution of Pt–Co binary catalyst systems is investigated using advanced in situ electron microscopy, including PtCo intermetallic alloys and single Pt/Co metal sites. The pre-doping of CoN4 sites in carbon supports and the initial Pt NP sizes play essential roles in forming either Pt3Co intermetallics or single Pt/Co metal sites. Importantly, the initial Pt NP loadings against the carbon support are critical to whether alloying to L12-ordered Pt3Co NPs or atomizing to SA Pt sites at high temperatures. High Pt NP loadings (e.g., 20%) tend to lead to the formation of highly ordered Pt3Co intermetallic NPs with excellent activity and enhanced stability toward the ORR. In contrast, at a relatively low Pt loading (<6 wt%), the formation of single Pt sites in the form of PtC3N is thermodynamically favorable, in which a synergy between the PtC3N and the CoN4 sites could enhance the catalytic activity for the ORR, but showing insufficient stability.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Ce0.67Zr0.33 02, Ce0.67Zr0.3302-Al203 and -y-Al203 supported Pd catalysts (designated as Pd/CZ, Pd/CZA and Pd/Al2 03) have been characterized by XRD, CO chemisorption, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, HRTEM, H2-TPR, 02-TPSR and catalytic performance test. The results show that the small Pd0, particles dispersed in CZ would promote the conversion of HC, CO and NO2, while the Pd0, particles dispersed in Al203 promote the conversion of NO in the light-off process. Pd0, species mainly disperse on Al203-rich grains surface for fresh Pd/CZA catalyst, but easily migrate onto CZ-rich grains surface due to the strong interaction between Pd and ceria-based oxide under high temperature reaction conditions. And it promotes the thermal stability of Pd 0 species and resilience of Pd to Pd 0, therefore enhances the catalytic performance for HC, CO and NO elimination. Meanwhile, the interaction between CZ and Al203 can be enhanced after aging treatment, resulting in increasing the thermal stability of Pd/CZA catalyst. 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
