Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:Creating synergetic metal-oxide interfaces is a promising strategy to promote the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. However, this strategy has been mainly applied to monometallic catalysts, while scarcely applied to alloy catalysts. In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the synergetic alloy-oxide interfaces in the bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. A series of Pt1Cox/Al2O3 catalysts with various Co/Pt molar ratios with x ranging from 0.5 to 3.8 was synthesized via a facile wet-chemistry strategy. Among them, the Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance for CO oxidation, with the lowest CO complete conversion temperature of -10 °C and the highest mass specific rate of 2.61 (mol CO) h-1 (g Pt)-1. From in situ X-ray absorption fine structure and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy studies, the superior catalytic performance of Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 originates from the optimal length of the three-dimensional alloy-oxide perimeter sites. We further extended this strategy to other bimetallic systems of Pt-Fe and Pt-Ni, which also show similar structural properties and remarkable promotional effects on the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.

Abstract:Considering the high activity in CO oxidation as well as the related reactions, the surface structure of Cu/Pt bimetallic system and its interaction with CO and O 2 molecules have been revisited with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with density-functional theory calculations (DFT). The extensively concerned Cu/Pt subsurface alloy (Cu-SSA) is clearly demonstrated with relative deactivation to CO and drastically weakened binding to O. In contrast, the submonolayer Cu film on Pt(111) manifests a significant enhancement in activating the O 2 molecules while reserving the strong binding to CO at the uncovered Pt area. Detailed control experiments corroborated by DFT calculations revealed that the Cu/Pt interface serves as the critical sites for both O 2 activation and the CO oxidation reaction. Therefore, the submonolayer Cu film may register a more promising catalyst structure than the Cu-SSA configuration for the Cu/Pt bimetallic system.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation performance toward ethylene oxide (EO) and the consequent mechanism were investigated on the Pt-Ru/CuCeOx bimetallic catalyst, which was prepared by a distinct method combining stepwise adsorption and subsequent impregnation. The catalytic tests show that the introduction of Ru into the Pt catalyst, so as to form Pt-Ru bimetallic active sites, can greatly increase the oxidation activity of the catalyst, as evidenced by the extremely lower full oxidation temperature (120 degrees C) when compared with that of the Pt/CeO2 catalyst (160 degrees C). The XPS spectra show that the Ru species (mainly RuOx) have strong interaction with the CuCeOx support, which can therefore affect the electron transfer between the Pt species and the support. As a result, the oxygen activation on Pt species is obviously facilitated and catalytic activity is enhanced. Finally, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) was used to track the reaction mechanism. It is found that the catalytic oxidation process follows the MvK catalytic mechanism at low temperature and the L-H catalytic mechanism when the temperature moves to higher range.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.
Stable Pt Single Atoms and Nanoclusters on Ultrathin Cuo Film and Their Performances in Co Oxidation

Abstract:A series of model catalysts consisting of Pt single atoms and nanoclusters supported by monolayered CuO film grown at Cu(110) were successfully prepared, which could be stabilized well above room temperature and which exhibited a high performance in CO oxidation at temperatures as low as similar to 360 K. Combined scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption measurements directly evidenced that at the initial CO oxidation stage, oxygen vacancy in the CuO lattice was generated at the nearest neighbor of the Pt nanoclusters. The experimental measurements showed that the oxidation activity was inversely proportional to the Pt nanocluster size. In contrast, the Pt single atoms possessed no surface reactivity for the CO oxidation because of the early and complete desorption of CO before its oxidation on the model catalysts commenced.

Abstract:This study with operando transmission electron microscopy approach shows that during a CO oxidation reaction over PdCu alloy nanoparticles, selective oxidation and segregation of Cu transform the nanoparticles into very stable and active Pd–CuO nanocatalysts for CO to CO2 conversion reaction. Bimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are widely used in many heterogeneous gas‐based reactions because they often outperform their monometallic counterparts. During these reactions, NPs often undergo structural changes, which impact their catalytic activity. Despite the important role of the structure in the catalytic activity, many aspects of how a reactive gaseous environment affects the structure of bimetallic nanocatalysts are still lacking. Here, using gas‐cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it is shown that during a CO oxidation reaction over PdCu alloy NPs, the selective oxidation of Cu causes the segregation of Cu and transforms the NPs into Pd–CuO NPs. The segregated NPs are very stable and have high activity for the conversion of CO into CO2. Based on the observations, the segregation of Cu from Cu‐based alloys during a redox reaction is likely to be general and may have a positive impact on the catalytic activity. Hence, it is believed that similar insights based on direct observation of the reactions under relevant reactive conditions are critical both for understanding and designing high‐performance catalysts.

Abstract:Structural evolution and chemical state of alloy catalysts under reaction conditions is crucial to the activity, selectivity and stability of the catalytic reactions. To provide fundamental insight, we present here a density functional theory study of the structural change of Pt–3d transition metal (TM, including Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) alloys with (111) orientation under the reductive and oxidizing conditions as well as its effect on the CO oxidation. We find that under the reductive conditions (vacuum and CO), 3d TM prefers to occupy in the subsurface layer due to its higher surface energy and smaller atomic size. While under the oxidizing conditions, the strong O–3d TMs interaction would induce 3d TM segregation to the surface, migrating further in the surface layer to form oxidized 3d TM islands. We find that Pt (111) with the atomic dispersed 3d TM in surface layers is highly active for CO oxidation via bi-functional mechanism. The interplay between structure and reaction environment as well as effect on the catalytic activity is highlighted.

Abstract:BackgroundMetal-oxide interface plays critical roles in promoting the catalytic activities of metal catalysts in a vast diversity of reactions. Maximizing this interfacial interaction so as to optimize the catalytic performance is an active subject of research that is worthy of intensive exploration.PurposeThis study aims to develop new Pt-group catalysts that are highly active towards cryogenic CO catalytic oxidation, and explore effective strategies to engineer metal-oxide (hydroxide) interfaces to weaken the adsorption of CO and to enhance the adsorption/activation of O2.MethodsSupported ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters (Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2) of (1.4±0.2) nm were synthesized using deposition-precipitation with urea (DPU). The catalytic performance towards CO oxidation was examined by using a fixed-bed U-shape flow quartz reactor. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques were combined to study the Ptnc-FeOx interfacial interaction.ResultsThe Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2 catalyst shows superior catalytic performance than Pt/SiO2 towards the CO oxidation reaction. Kinetics tests show that both the apparent activation energy and turnover frequency of Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2 are greatly enhanced as compared with Pt/SiO2 (19 kJ·mol-1 vs. 64 kJ·mol-1; 0.044 s-1 vs. 0.002 s-1 at 37 °C).ConclusionThe charge transfer from Fe to Pt results in the downshifted d-band center of Pt and reduces the CO adsorption strength, and hence, playing important roles in promoting the catalytic activity of Pt catalysts.
Large-scale Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of Nanoporous Cu–O System Towards CO Oxidation

Abstract:Nanoporous Cu-O system catalysts with different oxidation states of Cu have been fabricated through a combination of dealloying as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 alloy powders and subsequent thermal annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to characterize the microstructure and surface chemical states of Cu-O catalysts. The peculiar nanoporous structure can be retained in Cu-O catalysts after thermal treatment. Catalytic experiments reveal that all the Cu-O samples exhibit complete CO conversion below 170 degrees C. The optimal catalytic performance could be achieved through the combination of annealing in air with hydrogen treatment for the Cu-O catalyst, which shows a near complete conversion temperature (T-90%) of 132 degrees C and an activation energy of 91.3 KJ mol(-1). In addition, the present strategy (ball milling, dealloying and subsequent thermal treatment) could be scaled up to fabricate high-performance Cu-O catalysts towards CO oxidation.
Theoretical Study of the Role of a Metal–Cation Ensemble at the Oxide–Metal Boundary on CO Oxidation

Abstract:Identification of the active sites in heterogeneous catalysis is important for a mechanistic understanding of the structure-reactivity relationship and rationale of the design of new catalysts, but remains challenging. Among others, the boundaries at metal nanoparticles and supported oxides were found to be important and attributed to the active sites in various catalytic reactions. To reveal the nature of the active sites at the boundaries, the catalytic role of the inverse 3d transition-metal oxide nanoislands on Pt(111) for low-temperature CO oxidation was studied by density functional theory calculations. A characteristic Pt-cation ensemble at the oxide/metal boundaries as the active sites is identified. In Pt-cation ensembles, coordinate-unsaturated (CUS) cations exposed at the edges of oxide nanoislands are highly active for O-2 adsorption and dissociation, and less-reactive Pt binds modestly with dissociated O responsible for the facile CO oxidation. Inverse VIIIB-oxide/Pt boundaries exhibit high activities for low-temperature CO oxidation, and the corresponding activity decreases gradually from Fe to Co to Ni. The results rationalize a wide range of the experimental findings. To take advantage of the high oxidizing activity of low-valent VIIIB cations, FeO/Pt and CoO/Pt catalysts are appropriate for the reactions under oxygen-poor conditions, whereas NiO/Pt for the reactions under oxygen-rich conditions. The dependence of the activity and valence state of the Pt-cation ensemble at the oxide/metal boundaries is discussed, and the insight of the metal-cation ensemble as the active sites is highlighted.
Dynamic Atom Clusters on AuCu Nanoparticle Surface During CO Oxidation.

Abstract:Supported alloy nanoparticles are prevailing alternative low-cost catalysts for both heterogeneous and electrochemical catalytic processes. Gas molecules selectively interacting with one metal element induces a dynamic structural change of alloy nanoparticles under reaction conditions and largely controls their catalytic properties. However, such a multicomponent dynamic-interaction-controlled evolution, both structural and chemical, remains far from clear. Herein, by using state-of-the-art environmental TEM, we directly visualize, in situ at the atomic scale, the evolution of a AuCu alloy nanoparticle supported on CeO2 during CO oxidation. We find that gas molecules can "free" metal atoms on the (010) surface and form highly mobile atom clusters. Remarkably, we discover that CO exposure induces Au segregation and activation on the nanoparticle surface, while O2 exposure leads to the segregation and oxidation of Cu on the particle surface. The as-formed Cu2O/AuCu interface may facilitate CO-O interaction corroborated by DFT calculations. These findings provide insights into the atomistic mechanisms on alloy nanoparticles during catalytic CO oxidation reaction and to a broad scope of rational design of alloy nanoparticle catalysts.

Abstract:CO oxidation, one of the most important chemical reactions, has been commonly studied in both academia and the industry. It is one good probe reaction in the fields of surface science and heterogeneous catalysis, by which we can gain a better understanding and knowledge of the reaction mechanism. Herein, we studied the oxidation state of the Cu species to seek insight into the role of the copper species in the reaction activity. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction. The obtained results suggested that adding of Fe into the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst can greatly shift the light-off curve of the CO conversion to a much lower temperature, which means the activity was significantly improved by the Fe promoter. From the transient and temperature-programmed reduction experiments, we conclude that oxygen vacancy plays an important role in influencing CO oxidation activity. Adding Fe into the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst can remove part of the oxygen from the Cu species and form more oxygen vacancy. These oxygen vacancy sites are the main active sites for CO oxidation reaction and follow a Mars-van Krevelen-type reaction mechanism.

Abstract:In this work, a series of the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts with various Cu+/Cu2+ ratios were designed and synthesized to improve the low-temperature catalytic activity of CO oxidation. The physicochemical properties of all the catalysts were characterized by the SEM, TGA, N2-physisorption, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and H2-TPR. The results revealed that the Cu2O hollow sphere catalyst had the large specific surface area due to the formation of the hollow structure, which could provid more accessible active sites for the gaseous reactants. Meanwhile, the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts possessed high concentration of the surface oxygen vacancies and further promoted the adsorption and activation of O2. As a result, the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation was decreased and thus low-temperature activity of the CO oxidation was finally promoted. Therefore, the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts were considered as a series of high-efficient catalyst candidates for CO oxidation with promising low-temperature performance.
Hetero-metal Cation Control of CuO Nanostructures and Their High Catalytic Performance for CO Oxidation.

Abstract:A controllable synthesis of various morphologies of CuO nanostructures with tuning by hetero-metal cations has been developed in aqueous solution at room temperature. The morphologies of CuO can be engineered from nanosheets to nanoparticles with different length ratios of the long axis to the short axis. The formation of many metal-ion complexes plays an important role in slowing the release rate of OH- and affects the reaction kinetics further. We found that the effect of hetero-metal cations on the final morphology of the CuO nanostructures was the same as that of the cooling temperature. A series of temperature-controlled experiments demonstrated this. Furthermore, among all the synthesized CuO nanostructures, the fascinating colloidal mesoporous CuO quasi-monocrystalline nanosheets prepared at 25 degrees C with a thickness of ca. 10 nm and large specific surface area of 80.32 m(2) g(-1) is investigated intensively. These CuO nanosheets demonstrate a superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation, with features of high CO conversion efficiency (47.77 mmol(CO) g(CuO)(-1) h(-1) at 200 degrees C), which is close to that reported for previously investigated supported-CuO catalysts, and a low apparent activation energy E-a (53.3 kJ mol(-1)).
CO oxidation over CuOx/TiO2 catalyst: The importance of oxygen vacancies and Cu+ species

Abstract:It is well documented that the existence of oxygen vacancies and active Cu species can improve CO oxidation activity over TiO2 substrate. Herein, TiO2-supported copper catalysts (CuOx/TiO2) with different ratio of oxygen vacancies (Ov) and Cu+ has been synthesized. The existence and amount of Ov and Cu+ species were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum (EPR). The synergetic effect between Cu+ and oxygen vacancies was investigated in terms of O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2–TPD), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2–TPR) and in situ DRIFTS spectra. Cu+ is the adsorption site for CO molecules, the abundant Ov can significantly activate molecular oxygen, which effectively oxidize the adsorbed CO molecules. The most suitable ratio between Cu+ and Ov has been confirmed. The CuOx/TiO2(Cu+ rich) catalyst (51% Cu+, 26.3% Ov) shows superior CO oxidation activity (T90 = 136 °C) compared to CuOx/TiO2(Ov rich) catalyst (39% Cu+, 28.5% Ov, T90 > 350 °C). This work provides comprehensive investigation of the role for abundant oxygen vacancies and Cu+ in CO oxidation reactions.

Nanosized Feox Overlayers on Pt-Skin Surfaces for Low Temperature Co Oxidation

Abstract:Pt-Cu/carbon black catalysts were prepared by an impregnation-reduction method followed by acid leaching. The structure and composition of Pt-Cu nanoparticles treated under different conditions were investigated by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. PtCu3 alloy formed upon annealing Pt-Cu/carbon black catalysts in H2. Acid leaching produced Pt-Cu nanoparticles consisting of Pt-skeleton surface structure and PtCu3 alloy core. The Pt-skeleton could be transformed to well-defined Pt-skin structure through further annealing the leached Pt-Cu nanoparticles in H2. Decorating the Pt-skin surfaces with Fe oxide nanopatches resulted in enhanced reactivity in the preferential oxidation of CO in excess H2. The tri-component Pt-Cu-Fe catalysts exhibited comparable activity to the bi-component Pt-Fe catalysts but used much less Pt.

Abstract:The rat lung and nasal cavity are two target organs for carcinogenesis by 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK). In order to characterize further the enzymes involved in the bioactivation of NNK, detailed kinetic and inhibitory studies were conducted with rat lung and nasal mucosa microsomes, and the results were compared with previous studies. The enzymes in rat lung microsomes catalyzed the alpha-hydroxylation, pyridine N-oxidation and carbonyl reduction of NNK. The apparent Km for the formation of the NNK-derived keto aldehyde, NNK-N-oxide, the NNK-derived keto alcohol and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol were 28.8, 10.4, 7.0 and 178.1 microM respectively. In rat nasal microsomes, alpha-hydroxylation was the predominant pathway and the rate was approximately 200 times higher than that in lung microsomes. The apparent Kms for keto aldehyde and keto alcohol formation in rat nasal microsomes were 9.6 and 10.1 microM respectively. The cytochrome P450 inhibitors metyrapone and carbon monoxide markedly inhibited the metabolism of NNK in both rat lung and nasal microsomes. In rat lung microsomes, alpha-naphthoflavone and monospecific antibodies against P450s 1A2, 2A1 and 2B1 inhibited the formation of keto aldehyde by 39, 46, 64 and 23% respectively. In rat nasal microsomes, alpha-naphthoflavone and antibodies against P450s 1A2, 2A1 and 3A inhibited the metabolism of NNK by 80, 35, 20 and 14% respectively. The results indicate that cytochromes P450 play a major role in the metabolic activation of NNK in rat lung and nasal microsomes, and that there are tissue-related differences in NNK metabolism.

Abstract:Au@CuxO core-shell structure nanoparticles (NPs) have been designed and used for CO catalytic combustion to improve Au catalysts' activity and stability and decrease the cost. The catalytic performance of Au@CuxO/Metal Oxide has been affected a lot by the Au NPs' nature, the core-shell structural perfection, the shell thickness and the support type. It proved that Au particles prepared with neutral aqueous solution (pH = 7) is more feasible to be used as the active component of combustion catalysts. The suitable amount of Cu(NO3)(2) used for Au@CuxO preparation has led to the formation of more core-shell structure NPs with thin shell thickness thus lead to high activity. Among all the oxides studied here, Co3O4 is the best catalyst support. Both the catalytic activity and stability of Au@CuxO/Co3O4 are high. The Au content in the catalysts is only 0.11 wt% and the 90% CO conversion temperature is 132 degrees C. CO can even combust on Au@CuxO/Co3O4 at room temperature with 51% conversion and without any loss after 72-h reaction.
