Abstract:Two-dimensional ferromagnetic (2D FM) half-metal holds great potential for quantum magnetoelectronics and spintronic devices. Here, using density functional calculations and magnetic pictures, we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the novel van der Waals (vdW) metal-organic framework (MOF), CrCl2(N2C4H4)2, i.e. CrCl2(pyrazine)2. Our results show that CrCl2(pyrazine)2 is a 2D FM half-metal, having a strong intralayer FM coupling but a much weak interlayer one due to the vdW spacing. Its spin-polarized conduction bands are formed by the pyrazine molecular orbitals and are polarized by the robust Cr3+ local spin = 3/2. These results agree with the recent experiments [Pedersen et al., Nature Chemistry, 2018, 10, 1056]. More interestingly, CrCl2(pyrazine)2 monolayer has a strong doping tunability of the FM half-metallicity, and the FM coupling would be significantly enhanced by electron doping. Our work highlights a vital role of the organic ligand and suggests that vdW MOF is also worth exploration for new 2D magnetic materials.

Abstract:The ferromagnetism in Cr-based monolayers is of current interest (2019 Nat. Nanotechnol. 14 408), however, the Curie temperature is low. How can we enhance the thermal stability of ferromagnetism? Motivated by the recent synthesis of the layered conductive magnet CrCl2(pyrazine)(2) (2018 Nat. Chem. 10 1056), we perform first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that the exfoliated 2D CrCl2(pyrazine)(2) monolayer is stable dynamically and thermally, and it is a ferromagnetic half-metal with a sizeable band gap of 2.8 eV in the semiconducting channel, and the strong in-plane Cr-Cr interaction results in a large magnetic anisotropy energy. Moreover, the sheet exhibits a high Curie temperature of 350 K due to the enhanced magnetic exchange interaction resulting from the aromatic property of pyrazine. All of these intriguing features endow 2D CrCl2(pyrazine)(2) sheet with good potentials for applications in nanoscale spintronics devices.
Tunable Magnetic Anisotropy in Two-Dimensional CrX3/AlN (x=i,br,cl) Heterostructures

Abstract:Controlling the magnetic anisotropy of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets (FMs) is of great importance for the development of next generation spintronics. Here, by combining the 2D FM chromium trihalides CrX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) monolayer (ML) with the fully hydrogenated bilayer AlN (AlN-2L) together, the electronic and magnetic properties, especially the magnetic anisotropies, of CrX3/AlN heterostructures (CrX3 HSs) are systematically investigated based on first-principles calculations. When the polarization direction of AlN-2L reverses, the magnetic easy axis of CrX3 MLs can be switched between out-of-plane and in-plane directions. Particularly the magnetic anisotropic energy is tuned by a maximum of 200% variation in CrI3/AlN. It is shown that the different effects of AlN-2L on the modulation of the magnetic easy axis of CrX3 MLs are related to their different interfacial charge transfer/redistribution across their interfaces. In addition, a transition from FM semiconductor to half-metal is found in all CrX3 MLs when the polarization direction points toward CrX3 MLs. Our results suggest a feasible avenue for the design of van der Waals HSs to realize the control of magnetic anisotropy in 2D FMs.
Two-dimensional Ferromagnetic Van Der Waals CrCl3 Monolayer with Enhanced Anisotropy and Curie Temperature

Abstract:Among the recently widely studied van der Waals layered magnets $\mathrm{Cr}{X}_{3}$ ($X=\mathrm{Cl}$, Br, I), $\mathrm{CrC}{\mathrm{l}}_{3}$ monolayer (ML) is particularly puzzling: it is shown by experiments to have only an in-plane magnetic easy axis and, furthermore, all previous first-principles calculation results contradict this. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we unveil that the in-plane shape anisotropy that dominates over the weak perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy is responsible for the in-plane magnetic easy axis of $\mathrm{CrC}{\mathrm{l}}_{3}$ ML. To tune the in-plane ferromagnetism of $\mathrm{CrC}{\mathrm{l}}_{3}$ ML into the desirable perpendicular one, we propose substituting Cr with isovalent tungsten (W). We find that $\mathrm{CrWC}{\mathrm{l}}_{6}$ has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature up to 76 K. Our work not only gives insight into understanding the two-dimensional ferromagnetism of van der Waals MLs but also sheds new light on engineering their performances for nanodevices.
Ferromagnetic and Half-Metallic Fec2 Monolayer Containing C-2 Dimers

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and half-metallicity are two vital properties of a material for realizing its potential in spintronics applications. However, none of the two-dimensional (2D) pristine metal carbide sheets synthesized experimentally exhibits half-metallicity with ferromagnetic coupling. Here, a ferromagnetic and half-metallic FeC2 sheet containing isolated C-2 dimers rather than individual carbon atoms is predicted to be such a material. Based on state-of-the-art theoretical calculations, we show that the FeC2 sheet is dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable and can be chemically exfoliated from the bulk phase of layered ThFeC2. Due to its unique atomic configuration, the FeC2 sheet exhibits ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 245 K. This is in contrast to its bulk counterpart, ThFeC2, which is paramagnetic. We also find that, unlike the metallic metal carbide sheets, the FeC2 sheet is half-metallic with semiconducting spin-up and metallic spin down channels. Moreover, half-metallicity can remain until an equi-biaxial strain of 10%. In addition, we provide the Raman and infrared spectra which can be used to identify this new 2D structure experimentally in the future.
Electronic structure and magnetothermal properties of two-dimensional ScCl

Abstract:Two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials with intrinsic half-metallic properties have strong application advantages in nanoscale spintronics. Herein, density functional theory calculations show that monolayer ScCl is a ferromagnetic metallic material when undoped (n = 0), and the transition from metal to half-metal occurs with the continuous doping of holes. On the contrary, as the concentration of doped electrons increases, the system will exhibit metallic characteristics, which is particularly evident from a variation in spin polarizability. Furthermore, we have discussed how doped carriers affect the shape of the Fermi surface and the Fermi velocity of electrons. Most importantly, Monte Carlo simulations show that the ScCl monolayer is particularly regulated by carrier concentration (n) and magnetic field (h). Additionally, trends in energy and magnetic exchange coupling in different magnetic configurations (AFM phase and FM phase) with different doping concentrations are presented. When n < -0.16, the material is not only a half-metallic material that easily flips the magnetic axis, but also proves to be a candidate ferromagnetic material that works stably at room temperature in terms of dynamic stability. In addition, the origin of magnetocrystalline anisotropy is analyzed, and the contribution of different orbitals to spin-orbit coupling is presented. Moreover, we note that when magnetic field is small (h < 1 T), the change in size has a significant effect on ferromagnetic phase transition. However, when the system size is large (size >15 nm), TC is less sensitive to magnetic field. In addition, hole doping and size effect will greatly affect the hC of the system, but when the hole doping exceeds the critical value (n = -0.16), its influence on the hysteresis loop is no longer obvious. These interesting magnetic phenomena and easily adjustable physical properties show us that monolayer ScCl will be a promising functional material.
Intrinsic two-dimensional multiferroicity in CrNCl2 monolayer

Abstract:Two-dimensional multiferroics, which simultaneously possess ferroelectricity and magnetism in a single phase, are well-known to possess great potential applications in nanoscale memories and spintronics. On the basis of first-principles calculations, a CrNCl2 monolayer is reported as an intrinsic multiferroic. The CrNCl2 has an antiferromagnetic ground state, with a Néel temperature of about 88 K, and it exhibits an in-plane spontaneous polarization of 200 pC/m. The magnetic moments of CrNCl2 mainly come from the d5 xy orbital of the Cr cation, but the plane of the d xy orbital is perpendicular to the direction of the ferroelectric polarization, which hardly suppresses the occurrence of ferroelectricity. Therefore, the multiferroic exits in the CrNCl2. In addition, like CrNCl2, the CrNBr2 is an intrinsic multiferroic with antiferromagnetic-ferroelectric ground state while CrNI2 is an intrinsic multiferroic with ferromagnetic-ferroelectric ground state. These findings enrich the multiferroics in the two-dimensional system and enable a wide range of applications in nanoscale devices.

Doping Enhanced Ferromagnetism and Induced Half-Metallicity in CrI 3 Monolayer

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials are of current great interest for their promising applications to postsilicon microelectronics. Here we study, using first-principles calculations and a Monte Carlo simulation, the electronic structure and magnetism of CrI3 monolayer, whose bulk material is an interesting layered ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor. Our results show that CrI3 monolayer remains FM with T-C similar to 75K, and the FM order is due to a superexchange in the near-90 degrees Cr-I-Cr bonds. Moreover, we find that an itinerant magnetism could be introduced by carriers doping. Both electron doping and hole doping would render CrI3 monolayer half-metallic, and steadily enhance the FM stability. In particular, hole doping is three times as fast as electron doping in increasing T-C, and a room temperature FM half-metallicity could be achieved in CrI3 monolayer via a half-hole doping. Therefore, CrI3 monolayer would be an appealing two-dimensional spintronic material. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2016

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) CrI3 monolayer ferromagnets are key to the development of future miniature spintronic devices and modulating them into a half-metal will greatly expand the application scenarios of CrI3 in nanospintronics. Nevertheless, existing strategies to induce half-metallicity of a CrI3 monolayer remain experimentally challenging and have unstable issues. In this work, the introduction of a 2D electride [Y2C]2+·2e– as an auxiliary layer is shown to be an effective way to achieve the generation of stable half-metallicity in the CrI3 monolayer. When the fully hydrogenated Y2CH2 and ferromagnetic CrI3 monolayer combine to form a heterostructure, surprisingly the appropriate amount of charge injection (0.72 e) turns CrI3 into a half-metal. Hetero-interfacial half-metallicity in CrI3 is an intrinsic one and does not require any chemical functionalization or external physical modification. Therefore, it is advantageous for practical applications of CrI3 in miniature spintronic devices, such as magnetic tunnel junctions, spin valves or spin field-effect transistors. A new strategy of the stable CrI3/Y2CH2 heterostructure was successfully developed to induce the half-metallicity of 2D CrI3 ferromagnets, which is experimentally feasible and half-metallic stable enough. Abstract:Due to 100% spin polarization, half-metallic systems play a great role in the development of nanoscale spintronic devices. We conduct extensive calculations within spin-polarized density functional theory to design a newtpye two-dimensional Cr2O3 monolayer. The monolayer demonstrates robust stability as verified by formation energy, phonon spectrum, elastic constants, and molecular dynamics simulation. Each Cr2O3 unit cell gives rise to a total magnetic moment of 6.0 μB, mainly resulting from Cr sites due to the cooperation between crystal-field effect and Hund’s exchange. The monolayer is identified as a half-metallic ferromagnet with Curie temperature up to 460 K and 100% spin polarization. The super-exchange mechanism and direct exchange interaction are responsible for the ferromagnetic coupling. Moreover, the system shows large magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis in the basal plane. The excellent stability, half-metallicity, high Curie temperature, and magnetic anisotropy endow the monolayer with great potential in spintronic devices. This work provides a new pathway for designing ferromagnetic material with half-metallicity and high Curie temperature.

Abstract:Using the spin-polarized first-principles calculations, we revealed that two-dimensional transition metal nitride MXenes Cr2NX2 (X = O, F, OH) are excellent two-dimensional half-metallic ferromagnetic materials. Their structures and ferromagnetic ground states are stable well above room temperature. In addition, their large half-metal bandgaps are enough to prevent spin reversal and ensure high spin filtering efficiency and large spin mean free paths. The half-metallic property of these functionalized Cr2NX2 systems is robust and can be maintained under tensile strains up to 10%. These predictions suggest that the functionalized Cr2NX2 is of great significance for the development of highly efficient spintronic devices for room temperature applications.

Abstract:As one of the first experimentally found and naturally stable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials, the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has garnered great interest due to its potential hires in electronics and spintronics. Yet, the Curie temperature of monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 is lower than the ambient temperature, severely restricting the creation of valuable devices. Using the first-principle calculations, we explored how the adsorption of 3 d transition metals affects the electronic and magnetic properties of the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (from Sc to Zn). Our findings indicate that depending on the 3 d transition metals to be adsorbed, the electronic properties of the Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 adsorption system may be adjusted from semiconductor to metal/half-metal. We found that the adsorption of Ti and Fe leads to a transformation from semiconductor to metal. While in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 @Sc, V, Co, Ni, and Cu, the absorption realizes the changes from semiconductor to half metal. Moreover, adsorption may modify the magnetic moment and Curie temperature of the adsorbed system to enhance the ferromagnetic stability of the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 . Furthermore, we are able to modulate the half-metallic of Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 @Mn by means of electric fields. Hence, adsorption is a viable method for modulating the ferromagnetic half-metallic of 2D ferromagnets, paving the door for the future development of nano-electronic and spintronic devices with enhanced performance for 2D ferromagnetic materials.

Abstract:Abstract With the ongoing effort in proposing and realizing functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, we predict by first-principles calculations a family of 2D metal-carbon (M–C) crystals consisting of M–C trigonal lattice interpenetrated with the metal buckled honeycomb structure. We suggest by simulations that the 2D M–C crystals can be readily fabricated by a self-organizing lattice reconstruction process after placing metal atoms on hollow sites of γ-graphyne. In total, we found 12 members of the family and they exhibit a variety of electronic and magnetic properties. In this work, we highlight and focus on the Fe member of the family, 2D-Fe 2 C 12 . Each Fe in 2D-Fe 2 C 12 has a magnetic moment of 1 μ B due to the spin splitting of Fe E1 bands at Fermi surface, resulting in half metallicity and high catalytic activity with unusually high-density single-atom Fe active sites. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the 2D-Fe 2 C 12 retains its structural integrity up to 700 K of simulated short duration annealing. We expect these results to stimulate experimental research for the 2D M–C crystals we proposed.

Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Metal Organic Frameworks with Auxetic Effect, Room Temperature Ferrimagnetism, Chiral Ferroelectricity, Bipolar Spin Polarization and Topological Nodal Lines/Points

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors integrated with two or more functions are the cornerstone for constructing multifunctional nanodevices, but remain largely limited. Here, by tuning the spin state of organic linkers and the symmetry/topology of crystal lattice, we predict a class of unprecedented multifunctional semiconductors in 2D Cr(II) five-membered heterocyclic metal organic frameworks that simultaneously possess auxetic effect, room temperature ferrimagnetism, chiral ferroe-lectricity, electrically reversible spin polarization and topological nodal lines/points. Taking 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ (TDZ=1.2.5-thiadiazole) as an exemplification, the auxetic effect is produced by the anti-tetra-chiral lattice structure. The high temperature ferrimagnetism originates from the strong d-p direct magnetic exchange interaction between Cr cations and TDZ doublet radical anions. Meanwhile, the clockwise-counterclockwise alignment of TDZ' dipoles results in unique 2D chiral ferroelectricity with atomic-scale vortex-antivortex states. 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ is an intrinsic bipolar magnetic semiconductor where half-metallic conduction with switchable spin-polarization direction can be induced by applying a gate voltage. Besides, the symmetry of the little group C$_4$ of lattice structure endows 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ with topological nodal lines and a quadratic nodal point in the Brillouin zone near the Fermi level.

Abstract:Topological nodal-line semimetals, as a type of exotic quantum electronic state, have drawn considerable research interest recently. In this work, we propose a new two-dimensional covalent-organic Cr monolayer (ML) material, which has a combined honeycomb and effective Kagome lattice and has various half-metallic nodal loops (HMNLs). First-principles calculations show that the C ML is dynamically and thermally stable and has an out-of-plane ferromagnetic order. Remarkably, various nodal loops, including types I-III, are found coexisting in the material, all of which are rare half-metallic states. The obtained HMNLs, simultaneously possessing the merits of spintronics and semimetals, are robust against spin-orbit coupling and biaxial strain. A topological phase transition, characterized by loop-winding indexes, can be induced in the ML by applying uniaxial strain. Tight-binding model calculations show that the obtained HMNLs originate primarily from the band inversion between Cr d orbitals, accommodated on the honeycomb and Kagome sublattices, respectively. The various predicted HMNLs and topological behaviors mean that the Cr MLs have promisingly versatile applications in future low-power-consuming spintronics and electronics.
Monolayer Chromium Dichloride: an Anti-Ferromagnetic Semiconductor with a High Néel Temperature above Room Temperature

Abstract:Two-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic materials with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable for the applications of anti-ferromagnetic spintronic devices. Here, a monolayer anti-ferromagnetic chromium dichloride (CrCl2) with a 1T ' structure is reported based on first-principle calculations. The structural dynamic stability can be ensured by the lattice distortion of dimerization and the 1T ' CrCl2 is an anti-ferromagnetic semiconductor with a bandgap of 2.03 eV. Importantly, The dimerization also leads to that the nearest Cr atoms exhibit high anti-ferromagnetic coupling. 1T' CrCl2 has a Ne ' el temperature of 386 K according to esti-mations from a Monte-Carlo simulation using the Heisenberg model. This work provides a two-dimensional material with intrinsic anti-ferromagnetism above room temperature, which is one of the promising candi-dates for the future nanoscale spintronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets are popular in fields such as spintronic devices, but their low Curie temperature (Tc) limits their practical application. Therefore, finding and designing ferromagnets with high Tc is still a hot direction. In this work, by using a global optimization evolutionary algorithm and density functional theory method, a Janus CrSSe ferromagnetic monolayer with high Curie temperature was predicted and its physical and chemical properties was studied systematically. Monte Carlo simulations show that the Curie temperature of Janus CrSSe monolayer is about 260 K and can be adjusted to 420 K under small tensile biaxial strain. Besides, the magnetic order can be changed from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic order under compressive strain, suggesting the possibility of a non-volatile switch between FM and AFM states. What's more, this monolayer possesses the lowest energy in the 2D search space and excellent thermal, dynamic, and mechanical stabilities of CrSSe monolayer. Considering its excellent properties and current experimental techniques, CrSSe monolayer is possible to be synthesized it experimentally. These results suggest that Janus CrSSe monolayer is a promising candidate for the applicability of 2D Janus magnetism.
