Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable H-2 into valuable chemicals such as para-xylene and light olefins (C-2(=)-C-4(=)), which are important raw materials for the production of various commodities, is highly attractive. Herein we report that an oxide-zeolite (OXZEO) composite catalyst composed of ZnCrOx-ZSM-5 enables the selective synthesis of para-xylene and light olefins from CO2/H-2 in the presence of toluene. The product selectivities depend strongly on the acidity and location of acid sites of the zeolite function. By modifying ZSM-5 with silica, the external acid sites are shielded, and the pore openings are narrowed, which enhances significantly the formation of para-xylene. By modifying the zeolite with phosphorus, light olefins are co-produced due to the weakened acidity. As a result, the para-xylene fraction in xylene isomers reaches 82.8%, and the light olefin fraction in aliphatic hydrocarbons is as high as 75.8% when CO2 conversion is 20.9% and toluene conversion is 10.6%. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits a good stability within a 100 h test. This provides a potential route for utilization of centralized greenhouse gas for synthesis of value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Selective methylation of aromatics using CO2/H-2 presents a promising avenue for producing high-value-added chemicals with high selectivity. Herein, we introduced atomically dispersed Pd species into ZnZrOx solid solution and combined with HZSM-5 to create a bifunctional catalyst, applying to selectively synthesize para-xylene through toluene methylation using CO2/H-2 at low pressure. Remarkably, 0.1 wt% Pd in PdZnZrOx-HZSM-5 afforded the selectivity of xylene in CO-free products and para-xylene in xylene to 90.0% and 85.6% at 0.5 MPa, respectively. Spectroscopic characterizations revealed that atomically dispersed Pd species enhance the dissociation of adsorbed hydrogen and facilitate the creation of oxygen vacancies, benefiting the CO2 hydrogenation to CHxO intermediates. Density functional theory calculations suggested that Pd-doped ZnZrOx reduces the energy barrier for hydrogenating H2COOH* to H2CO*, aiding to form CH3O* intermediate for toluene methylation. This work provides insights into the design of catalysts for the selective methylation of aromatics using CO2/H-2 at low pressure.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into high-value-added chemicals, especially aromatics, is appealing for the alleviation of carbon emissions. However, preferential production of valuable aromatics including benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) from CO2 is still a great challenge through direct hydrogenation routes due to the complicated side reactions. Herein, we apply a composite catalyst containing metal oxides (ZnZrO x ) and Zn-modified zeolites (Zn/ZSM-5) to selectively synthesize toluene and xylene through CO2 hydrogenation in the presence of benzene. A total selectivity of toluene plus xylene as high as 92.8% is achieved with C1–5 alkane selectivity of less than 4%, as the CO2 conversion reaches 21% and the benzene conversion reaches 22.2%. We demonstrate that the appropriate acid properties of zeolites play a pivotal role in the coupling reaction, which can be readily adjusted by the introduction of Zn. The increase of moderate Zn-induced Lewis acid sites with consumption of strong Brønsted acid sites not only promotes the formation of intermediate alkylation species but also facilitates the recovery of occupied active sites by regulating the successive transformation of formate intermediates and desorption of aromatic products. The enhanced coupling effect results in the elevation of both reactant conversion and specific aromatics products’ (toluene and xylene) selectivity. This work may provide an efficient strategy for the synthesis of high-value aromatics through coupling reactions from CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of valuable aromatics, such as xylene from CO2 hydrogenation is of highly interest for carbon emission reduction and reutilization, but it remains a challenge due to the poor product yield limited by low CO2 conversion. On the other hand, toluene methylation with methanol suffers from low methylation efficiency due to severe side reactions of methanol. Herein, a tandem catalysis that combines CO2 methanol synthesis and toluene methylation using CO2/H2 mixture as C1 source with a Zr-modified CuO/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst has been evaluated. Introducing Zr provided abundant sites for CO2 adsorption, more oxygen defects and surface area, thus enhancing the conversion of CO2 and toluene. The competitive adsorption of CO2 and toluene on ZrCuOx caused the phase transition of bulk CuO, and further catalytic deactivation. This issue was successfully solved by configuring a core (metal)-shell (zeolite) like composite catalyst to minimize the exposure of toluene on ZrCuOx surface. Toluene conversion rate can reach 45.94% when CO2 conversion is 31.99%, and the yield of xylene can reach 0.6 g gcat 1.h- 1. Abstract:The direct synthesis of light aromatics, especially para-xylene (p-X), from syngas/CO2 is drawing strong interest, but improving the space-time yield (STY) of p-X is a significant challenge. Here, a dynamic "dual-engine-driven" (DED) catalytic system is designed by combining two partners of ZnCr and FeMn (named "dual-engine") with Z5@SiO2 capsule zeolite. The DED catalyst of 1.0%FeMn&[ZnCr&Z5@SiO2] shows an extremely higher p-X STY of 36.1 gp-x·kgcat-1·h-1, about eight times higher than that of [ZnCr&Z5]. DED manipulates ZnCr engine for methanol formation and drives FeMn engine for light olefins generation together, and then the formed methanol and light olefins are coordinately converted in situ into p-X-rich aromatics over Z5@SiO2. The DED model boosts the driving force for syngas/CO2 conversion, simultaneously concerting the cooperation of "dual-engine" for p-X generation, resulting in extremely high STY of p-X. This study achieves non-petroleum p-X production at industrial-relevant level and advances knowledge in designing innovative heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Direct CO2 methylation with toluene, as one of the CO2 hydrogenation technologies, exhibits great potential for the CO2 utilization to produce the valuable para-xylene (PX), but the tandem catalysis remains a challenge for low conversion and selectivity due to the competitive side reactions. The thermodynamic analyses and the comparation with two series of catalytic results of direct CO2 methylation are conducted to investigate the product distribution and possible mechanism in adjusting the feasibility of higher conversion and selectivity. Based on the Gibbs energy minimization method, the optimal thermodynamic conditions for direct CO2 methylation are 360-420 °C, 3 MPa with middle CO2/C7H8 ratio (1:1 to 1:4) and high H2 feed (CO2/H2 = 1:3 to 1:6). As a tandem process, the toluene feed would break the thermodynamic limit and has the higher potential of >60% CO2 conversion than that of CO2 hydrogenation without toluene. The direct CO2 methylation route also has advantages over the methanol route with a good prospect for >90% PX selectivity in its isomers due to the dynamic effect of selective catalysis. These thermodynamic and mechanistic analyses would promote the optimal design of bifunctional catalysts for CO2 conversion and product selectivity from the view of reaction pathways of the complex system.

Abstract:Direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into lower olefins (C2=–C4=), generally referring to ethylene, propylene, and butylene, is highly attractive as a sustainable production route for its great significance in greenhouse gas control and fossil fuel substitution, but such a route always tends to be low in selectivity toward olefins. Here we present a bifunctional catalysis process that offers C2=–C4= selectivity as high as 80% and C2–C4 selectivity around 93% at more than 35% CO2 conversion. This is achieved by a bifunctional catalyst composed of indium–zirconium composite oxide and SAPO-34 zeolite, which is responsible for CO2 activation and selective C–C coupling, respectively. We demonstrate that both the precise control of oxygen vacancies on the oxide surface and the integration manner of the components are crucial in the direct production of lower olefins from CO2 hydrogenation. No obvious deactivation is observed over 150 h, indicating a promising potential for industrial application.

Abstract:Small olefins from syngas The conversion of coal or natural gas to liquid fuels or chemicals often proceeds through the production of CO and H 2 . This mixture, known as syngas, is then converted to hydrocarbons with Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. For the light olefins (ethylene to butylenes) needed for chemical and polymer synthesis, conventional catalysts are mechanistically limited to <60% conversion and deactivate through carbon buildup. Abstract:Selective conversion of CO 2 into light olefins (C 2=–C 4=) has attracted considerable research interests. However, effective regulation of C 2=–C 4= distribution or selective production of specific olefins is still challenging. Herein, we report a new catalyst system composed of Zn 0.5Ce 0.2Zr 1.8O 4 solid solution and H-RUB-13 zeolite, which shows C 2=–C 4= yield as high as 16.1%, being 2.3–3.3 times of those reported in literature, but CO selectivity of only 26.5% at 350°C and 3.5 MPa. More strikingly, propene and butene account for about 90% of C 2=–C 4=. In situ spectroscopy, isotopic-labeling experiments, and DFT calculations indicate that formate and methoxyl are the dominant intermediates for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol on Zn 0.5Ce 0.2Zr 1.8O 4, whereas CO formation via RWGS reaction is substantially suppressed. By tuning the acid site content, strength, and distribution in H-RUB-13, the alkene-based cycle in MTO is significantly enhanced, and consequently, leads to the formation of more propene and butene.

Abstract:Toluene is a basic chemical that is currently produced from petroleum resources. In this paper, we report a new route for the effective synthesis of toluene from isoprene and acrolein, two reactants readily available from biomass, through a simple two-step reaction. The process includes Diels-Alder cycloaddition of isoprene and acrolein in a Zn-containing ionic liquid at room temperature to produce methylcyclohex-3-enecarbaldehydes (MCHCAs) as intermediates, followed by M (M = Pt, Pd, Rh)/Al2O3-catalyzed consecutive dehydrogenation-decarbonylation of the MCHCAs at 573 K to generate toluene with an overall yield up to 90.7 %. Model reactions indicated that a synergistic inductive effect of the C=C double bond and the aldehyde group in MCHCA plays a key role in initiating the consecutive dehydrogenation-decarbonylation, and that methyl benzaldehydes are the key intermediates in the gas-phase transformation of MCHCAs. Microcalorimetric adsorption of CO on different catalysts showed that decarbonylation of the substrate occurs more likely on the strong adsorption sites. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report of Pt/Al2O3-catalyzed consecutive dehydrogenation-decarbonylation of a given compound in one reactor. This work provides a highly efficient and environmental friendly route to toluene by utilizing two compounds that can be prepared from biomass.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 to olefins has received considerable attention. Herein, transition metal- and sodium-modulated iron-based catalysts were fabricated. Doping with zinc and copper favor the formation of Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 5 C 2 active phases, while adding manganese inhibits the formation of iron carbide. In addition, phase separation between copper and iron species occurs more readily under working conditions. Therefore, a zinc- and sodium-modulated Fe catalyst exhibited the best activity and stability. Moreover, copper was predicted to substantially decrease the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the secondary hydrogenation of olefins and result in a much lower olefin-to-paraffin ratio. In addition, the ZnO/Fe 5 C 2 interface facilitated the desorption of olefins from the catalyst surface and inhibited the undesirable secondary reaction of olefins, enabling a high selectivity toward olefins of 36.9% C 2–4 = and 32.3% C 5+ = . This study provides an exemplary new strategy for tuning the product selectivity of catalysts for olefin synthesis.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 using renewable hydrogen to produce valuable chemicals has recently become highly attractive. Light olefins are important basic monomers for the production of various commodities. This work developed a bifunctional catalyst composed of ZnO-Y2O3 oxide and SAPO-34 zeolite, which catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins with a selectivity in hydrocarbons reaching 83.9% at a conversion of 27.6% at 390 degrees C. The obtained results demonstrated that CO2 conversion and product distribution are strongly dependent on the oxide composition and structure. This new bimetallic oxide catalyst appears promising for further development of CO2 conversion to other valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Utilizing carbon dioxide as a carbon source for the synthesis of olefins and aromatics has emerged as one of the most practical methods for CO2 reduction. In this study, an improved selectivity of 85% for targeting products (ethylbenzene and propylbenzene) is achieved with a benzene conversion of 16.8% by coupling the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to olefins over the bifunctional catalyst "Oxide-Zeolite" (OX-ZEO) and the alkylation of benzene with olefins over ZSM-5. In addition to investigating the influence of SAPO-34 and ZSM-5 zeolite acidity on product distribution, catalyst deactivation due to coke formation is addressed by modifying both molecular sieves to be hierarchical to extend the catalyst lifespan. Even after 100 h of operation at 400 °C, the catalysts maintained over 80% selectivity towards the target products, with benzene conversion over 14.2%. Furthermore, the pathway of propylbenzene formation is demonstrated through simple experimental design, revealing that the surface Brønsted acid sites of SAPO-34 serve as its primary formation sites. This provides a novel perspective for further investigation of the reaction network.

Abstract:Converting CO2 to olefins is an ideal route to achieve carbon neutrality. However, selective hydrogenation to light olefins, especially single-component olefin, while reducing CH4 formation remains a great challenge. Herein, we developed ZnZrOx/SSZ-13 tandem catalyst for the highly selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins. This catalyst shows C2=-C4= and propylene selectivity up to 89.4% and 52%, respectively, while CH4 is suppressed down to 2%, and there is no obvious deactivation. It is demonstrated that the isolated moderate Brønsted acid sites (BAS) of SSZ-13 promotes the rapid conversion of intermediate species derived from ZnZrOx, thereby enhancing the kinetic coupling of the reactions and inhibit the formation of alkanes and improve the light olefins selectivity. Besides, the weaker BAS of SSZ-13 promote the conversion of intermediates into aromatics with 4-6 methyl groups, which is conducive to the aromatics cycle. Accordingly, more propene can be obtained by elevating the Si/Al ratio of SSZ-13. This provides an efficient strategy for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins with high selectivity.

Abstract:The efficient utilization of CO2 has great strategic significance, especially for the reduction of the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and relief of the dependence on the fossil resources. Although direct conversion of CO2 to aromatics via a methanol-mediated pathway has made great progress recently, how to selectively synthesize light aromatics (benzene, toluene and xylenes) remains a great challenge for the perspective of industrial demand. In this work, a highly active tandem catalyst composed of chromium-doped ZrO2 aerogel and HZSM‐5@SiO2 zeolite was employed for the hydrogenation of CO2 to light aromatics. The ZrO2‐Cr/HZSM‐5@SiO2 catalyst achieved 13.9% CO2 conversion, 76.8% aromatics selectivity and 51.2% light aromatics selectivity. It was worth noting that the CO selectivity was suppressed to about 29%, while the CH4 selectivity was controlled at around 1%. The external Brønsted acid sites of HZSM-5 zeolite were eliminated by silylation. This modification could inhibit the alkylation of light aromatics and enhance the light aromatics selectivity. Abstract:Extra-heavy olefins (C 12+ = ), feedstocks to synthesize a wide range of value-added products, are conventionally generated from fossil resources via energy-intensive wax cracking or multi-step processes. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with sustainably obtained syngas as feed-in provides a potential way to produce C 12+ = , though there is a trade-off between enhancing C-C coupling and suppressing further hydrogenation of olefins. Herein, we achieve selective production of C 12+ = via the overall conversion of CO and water, denoted as Kölbel-Engelhardt synthesis (KES), in polyethylene glycol (PEG) over a mixture of Pt/Mo 2 N and Ru particles. KES provides a continuously high CO/H 2 ratio, thermodynamically favoring chain propagation and olefin formation. PEG serves as a selective extraction agent to hinder hydrogenation of olefins. Under an optimal condition, the yield ratio of CO 2 to hydrocarbons reaches the theoretical minimum, and the C 12+ = yield reaches its maximum of 1.79 mmol with a selectivity (among hydrocarbons) of as high as 40.4%.
