Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into high-value-added chemicals, especially aromatics, is appealing for the alleviation of carbon emissions. However, preferential production of valuable aromatics including benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) from CO2 is still a great challenge through direct hydrogenation routes due to the complicated side reactions. Herein, we apply a composite catalyst containing metal oxides (ZnZrO x ) and Zn-modified zeolites (Zn/ZSM-5) to selectively synthesize toluene and xylene through CO2 hydrogenation in the presence of benzene. A total selectivity of toluene plus xylene as high as 92.8% is achieved with C1–5 alkane selectivity of less than 4%, as the CO2 conversion reaches 21% and the benzene conversion reaches 22.2%. We demonstrate that the appropriate acid properties of zeolites play a pivotal role in the coupling reaction, which can be readily adjusted by the introduction of Zn. The increase of moderate Zn-induced Lewis acid sites with consumption of strong Brønsted acid sites not only promotes the formation of intermediate alkylation species but also facilitates the recovery of occupied active sites by regulating the successive transformation of formate intermediates and desorption of aromatic products. The enhanced coupling effect results in the elevation of both reactant conversion and specific aromatics products’ (toluene and xylene) selectivity. This work may provide an efficient strategy for the synthesis of high-value aromatics through coupling reactions from CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDThe synthesis of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons from coal or biomass-derived syngas has received increasing attention because of the resource constraints of petroleum. The present study explores direct production of hydrocarbons from syngas over bifunctional catalyst containing methanol synthesis catalyst CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 (CZA) and SAPO-34 zeolite.RESULTSThe synthesis of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons from syngas was investigated over CZA/SAPO-34 bifunctional catalyst at temperatures ranging from 240 to 440 degrees C. The results indicate that higher temperatures aggregate Cu metal and lead to the deactivation of CZA. The predominant products are dimethyl ether (DME) and methanol at temperatures from 280 to 360 degrees C and a small amount of hydrocarbons are found due to the deactivation of SAPO-34 caused by a type of coke named inert coke'. While 96.5% selectivity of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons in products of all hydrocarbons can be obtained at 400 degrees C with less coke named active coke'.CONCLUSIONReaction temperatures have significant effect on the selectivity of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons and coke species of SAPO-34. The active coke' of poly methyl-substituted benzene/naphthalene (MB/MN) acts both as an intermediate and as coke deposition. The inert coke' of poly methyl-substituted adamantine (MA) and other groups-substituted benzene/naphthalene acts only as coke depositions. Comprehensive consideration of the characteristics of this bifunctional catalyst, shows that a moderate temperature for C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons synthesis from syngas might be approximately 400 degrees C. Abstract:The synthesis of aromatics via CO 2 hydrogenation is receiving an increasing attention. However, the direct conversion of CO 2 to a single aromatic product with high selectivity is very challenging. Herein, we report a synthesis of tetramethylbenzene(TeMB) on a tandem catalyst consisting of ZnZrO and hierarchical ZSM-11 zeolite, the selectivity of TeMB up to 79% in aromatics is achieved while maintaining 76% total aromatic selectivity. Uniform mesopores of ZSM-11 created with mixed TPAOH and NaOH organic-inorganic base are found to be responsible for the increased selectivity of aromatics and TeMB. Based on the acidic property of the catalyst, the increase of TeMB selectivity is attributed to the increase in the amount of the external BrØnsted acid which is increased with the external surface area of ZSM-11 zeolite. More BrØnsted acid on the external surface promotes the alkylation of low-carbon aromatics such as xylene, therefore increases the selectivity of TeMB.

Abstract:The direct conversion of syngas to aromatics has received consider-able attention. The development of a highly active and stable catalyst with tunable selectivity for the synthesis of aromatics remains a great challenge, notwithstanding the understanding of the reaction mechanism. In this study, we fabricated a series of high-performance bifunctional catalysts comprising CoMnAl catalysts, which contain Co2C nanoprisms as the active phase, and versatile HZSM-5@silicalite-1 zeolites, with a hollow nanostructure and a scaly shell, for the transformation of syngas into aromatics. The catalysts achieve a CO conversion 70% under mild reaction conditions (280 degrees C, 2 MPa), with ultrahigh stability. The selectivity toward aro-matics is higher than 63% with <2.9% selectivity toward CH4, and the para-xylene (PX) fraction of the aromatics produced reaches 34.7%, leading to unprecedentedly high space-time yield of PX. Furthermore, the reaction pathway and the intermediates involved in the formation of the aromatic products are also determined.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of aromatics from syngas was studied by a tandem catalyst of FeMnK/SiO2 with HZSM-5. A decrease in SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of HZSM-5 decreased the crystal sizes of the tandem catalyst, restraining the reduction of iron oxides. Especially, The HZSM-5 with lower SiO2/Al2O3 ratio promoted the formation of strong Bronsted acid sites (BAS). There existed a linear relationship between the BAS amount and aromatics selectivity. Increasing reaction temperature facilitated the formation of aromatics while the increase in both gas space velocity (GHSV) and pressure restrained the selectivity of aromatics. The tandem catalyst of FeMnK/SiO2 with HZSM-5 presented excellent STA performances of 83.80% CO conversion and 57.17% aromatics selectivity under optimizing reaction conditions of 320 degrees C, 2.0 MPa and 4000 h(-1). This work indicated that a combination of Fe-Mn based catalyst with HZSM-5 could promote the direct conversion of syngas to aromatic hydrocarbons.
Enhanced Aromatic Selectivity by the Sheet-Like ZSM-5 in Syngas Conversion

Abstract:Aromatics are important basic chemicals. However, direct conversion of syngas via the conventional Fischer-Tropsch synthesis produces little aromatics. We presented herein that a bifunctional composite of ZSM-5 in combination with ZnCrOx catalyzes syngas conversion to aromatics. Particularly, ZSM-5 crystals with a sheet-like morphology can enhance significantly the aromatization activity. The lower length ratio of the b/a axes of the crystals, the more aromatics form but without influencing the selectivity of small molecules such as CH4 and C2–C4. Since the acid properties and the Al chemical environment were not altered while the morphology changed, the enhanced aromatic selectivity is likely attributed to the favored diffusion of aromatics in these sheet-like crystals.

Abstract:A series of ZnO-ZrO2 solid solutions with different Zn contents were synthesized by the urea co-precipitation method, which were coupled with H-ZSM-5 zeolite to form bifunctional catalysts. As a new benzene alkylation reagent, syngas was used instead of methanol to realize the efficient conversion of syngas and benzene into toluene and xylene. A suitable ratio of ZnO-ZrO2 led to the significant improvement in the catalytic performance, and a suitable amount of acid helped to increase the selectivity of toluene/xylene and reduce the selectivity of the by-products ethylbenzene and C9+ aromatics. The highest benzene conversion of 89.2% and toluene/xylene selectivity of 88.7% were achieved over 10% ZnO-ZrO2&H-ZSM-5 (Si/Al = 23) at a pressure of 3 MPa and a temperature of 450 °C. In addition, the effect of the zeolite framework structure on product distribution was examined. Similar to the molecular dynamics of aromatic hydrocarbons, H-ZSM-5 zeolites comprise 10-membered-ring pores, which are beneficial to the activation of benzene; hence, the conversion of benzene is higher. H-ZSM-35 and H-MOR zeolites exhibited small eight-membered-ring channels, which were not conducive to the passage of benzene; hence, the by-product ethylbenzene exhibits a higher selectivity. The distance between the active centers of the bifunctional catalysts was the main factor affecting the catalytic performance, and the powder mixing method was more conducive to the conversion of syngas and benzene.

Abstract:Syngas chemistry has been under study since Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was invented in the 1920s. Despite the successful applications of FTS as the core technology of coal-to-liquid and gas-to-liquid processes in industry, the product selectivity control of syngas conversion still remains a great challenge, particularly for value-added chemicals such as light olefins. Recent studies show that the catalyst design concept of OXZEO (oxide-zeolite-based composite) enables direct syngas conversion to mixed light olefins with a selectivity reaching 80% and to ethylene with a selectivity of 83% among hydrocarbons. They both well-surpass the limits predicated by the Anderson-Schultz-Flory model via the conventional FTS route (58% and 30%, respectively). Furthermore, this catalyst concept allows one-step synthesis of gasoline-range isoparaffins and aromatic compounds, which is otherwise not possible in conventional FTS. A rapidly growing number of studies demonstrate the versatility of this concept and may form a technology platform for utilization of carbon resources including coal, natural gas, and biomass via syngas to a variety of basic chemicals and fuels. However, the selectivity control mechanism is far from being understood. Therefore, we focus mainly on the catalytic roles of the bifunctionalities of OXZEO while reviewing the development of bifunctional catalysts for selective syngas conversion by taking syngas-to-light olefins as an example. With this, we intend to provide insights into the selectivity control mechanism of the OXZEO concept in order to understand the challenges and prospects for future development of much more active and more selective catalysts.
SAPO-34 Facilitates the Formation of Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes in Direct Syngas Conversion over MnCrO X -SAPO-34-ZSM-5

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to aromatics over metal oxide and zeolite (OXZEO) composite catalysts is promising. However, the selectivity of more valuable products such as benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) is limited due to undesired secondary methylation of BTX. Herein, we report that the introduction of SAPO-34 into MnCrO x -ZSM-5 catalyst enhances significantly the formation of BTX without sacrificing the aromatics selectivity. Under optimized conditions, the fraction of BTX in aromatics reaches 64.7% versus 28.9% over the catalyst without SAPO-34. A number of model reaction tests and characterizations reveal that SAPO-34 consumes partially the intermediates such as ketene, by converting them to light olefins. Thus, the methylation of BTX by ketene to heavy aromatics is inhibited over the external acid sites of ZSM-5, leading to an enhanced BTX selectivity in the products. This hybrid catalyst provides an efficient method for highly selective synthesis of BTX from syngas.

Abstract:irect synthesis of aromatics from syngas is a great challenge because of severe operating conditions and low yield of aromatics. Making this process more competitive than the MTA (methanol to aromatics) process will require high energy efficiency and low CO2 emission. A combination of Na-Zn-Fe5C2 and hierarchical HZSM-5 with uniform mesopores dramatically changed the product distribution of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, leading to 51% aromatic selectivity under the stable stage with CO conversion >85%. C12+ heavy hydrocarbons almost disappeared, and the catalyst showed good stability. The hierarchical zeolitic structure and Bronsted acidity of HZSM-5 could be precisely tuned by controlling the alkali treatment conditions and the degree of ion exchange. The appropriate density and strength of the Bronsted acid sites and the hierarchical pore structure of HZSM-5 endowed the catalyst with an unprecedented aromatic yield. This work shows a broad area for development for syngas conversion.
Controllable alkylation of benzene with mixed olefins for producing C8-C15 aromatics in jet fuel

Abstract:C8-C15 aromatics are used widely as key components of jet fuel, whereas effectively producing these aromatic components remains a big challenge. We reported the oriented synthesis of C8-C15 aromatic components in jet fuel by alkylation of benzene with mixed ethylene and propylene in vapor-phase over nanosize ZSM-5 (N-ZSM-5) catalyst. The selectivity and yield of aromatics, mainly of carbon number ranging from 8 to 15, could be enhanced by decreasing the particle size of ZSM-5, owing to the faster mass transfer and shorter intraparticle diffusion route for reactants and target products during the reaction process, as well as by increasing the acid strength via decreasing the Si/Al molar ratio, thus improving the alkylation performance conspicuously. In addition, mesopore volume of N-ZSM-5 zeolite showed an increase tendency with decreased particle size, contributing to the carbon chain growth and diffusion of target products. The resultant N-ZSM-5 catalyst showed superior benzene conversion of 40.3%, ethylene and propylene conversion of 99.5% and 99.2%, with aromatic C8-C15 selectivity and yield of 94.8% and 54.9%, respectively, under the optimized reaction conditions.

Abstract:The efficient utilization of CO2 has great strategic significance, especially for the reduction of the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and relief of the dependence on the fossil resources. Although direct conversion of CO2 to aromatics via a methanol-mediated pathway has made great progress recently, how to selectively synthesize light aromatics (benzene, toluene and xylenes) remains a great challenge for the perspective of industrial demand. In this work, a highly active tandem catalyst composed of chromium-doped ZrO2 aerogel and HZSM‐5@SiO2 zeolite was employed for the hydrogenation of CO2 to light aromatics. The ZrO2‐Cr/HZSM‐5@SiO2 catalyst achieved 13.9% CO2 conversion, 76.8% aromatics selectivity and 51.2% light aromatics selectivity. It was worth noting that the CO selectivity was suppressed to about 29%, while the CH4 selectivity was controlled at around 1%. The external Brønsted acid sites of HZSM-5 zeolite were eliminated by silylation. This modification could inhibit the alkylation of light aromatics and enhance the light aromatics selectivity. The novel ZrO2‐Cr/HZSM‐5@SiO2 catalyst opens a new avenue for the oriented transformation of CO2 molecules into valuable light aromatics and provides a new insight for the directed design of tandem catalysts.

Abstract:Selectivity control in the single-step conversion of syngas to a single aromatic product is a big challenge. Here, we report an aldol-aromatic mechanism composed of aldol, phenolic, and aromatic cycles, that gave high selectivity >70% of a single product, tetramethylbenzene (TeMB) in hydrocarbons, at a reaction temperature as low as 275 degrees C. We evidently found the existence of oxygenated-aromatic compounds in the carbon pool, which remained active throughout the reaction and acted as key intermediates for the formation of the aromatics. The physical contact of ZnCr2O4 with H-ZSM-5 exhibited a strong coupling effect that promoted surface diffusion of C-1 oxygenates (i.e., formaldehyde and methanol) from ZnCr2O4 into H-ZSM-5 and transformed into aromatics via an aldol-aromatic reaction pathway, thus overcoming the most difficult step for first carbon-carbon bond formation. In addition, ZnCr2O4 promoted the aromatics desorption by lowering the desorption activation energy and prevented the oversaturation of carbon pool species. Furthermore, it was found that a combination of thermodynamic equilibrium, surface methylation, and static repulsion are the key factors for giving high selectivity of TeMB in both carbon pool and final aromatics. This aldol-aromatic mechanism will open an efficient reaction pathway to upscale the process for selective aromatic synthesis in high yield from syngas.

Abstract:Benzene methylation over zeolite offers an alternative route to produce high-value toluene or para-xylene directly from benzene and C1 chemical sources, especially for countries with a shortage of crude oil but abundant coal, natural gas, or biomass. It also serves as a green "molecular engineering" to reduce costs of energy intensive separation for C8 isomers by selective catalysis. Since numerous zeolite-based catalysts have been synthesized, characterized and evaluated in alkylation process, this review aims to present the roles of the zeolite topology and acidity in selective catalysis based on the reaction network and mechanisms for benzene methylation system during the recent years. It covers concise details in the shape-selective catalysis of zeolite topology and acidity to provide a theoretical basis of the chemical modification under reaction conditions, which give directions to or identify the catalyst design for benzene methylation, and also will provide the mechanistic insights and technical reference as an integral part of other aromatics production.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable H-2 into valuable chemicals such as para-xylene and light olefins (C-2(=)-C-4(=)), which are important raw materials for the production of various commodities, is highly attractive. Herein we report that an oxide-zeolite (OXZEO) composite catalyst composed of ZnCrOx-ZSM-5 enables the selective synthesis of para-xylene and light olefins from CO2/H-2 in the presence of toluene. The product selectivities depend strongly on the acidity and location of acid sites of the zeolite function. By modifying ZSM-5 with silica, the external acid sites are shielded, and the pore openings are narrowed, which enhances significantly the formation of para-xylene. By modifying the zeolite with phosphorus, light olefins are co-produced due to the weakened acidity. As a result, the para-xylene fraction in xylene isomers reaches 82.8%, and the light olefin fraction in aliphatic hydrocarbons is as high as 75.8% when CO2 conversion is 20.9% and toluene conversion is 10.6%. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits a good stability within a 100 h test. This provides a potential route for utilization of centralized greenhouse gas for synthesis of value-added chemicals.
High-Quality Gasoline Directly from Syngas by Dual Metal Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) Catalysis

Abstract:Despite significant efforts towards the direct conversion of syngas into liquid fuels, the selectivity remains a challenge, particularly with regard to high-quality gasoline with a high octane number and a low content of aromatic compounds. Herein, we show that zeolites with 1D ten-membered-ring (10-MR) channel structures such as SAPO-11 and ZSM-22 in combination with zinc- and manganese-based metal oxides (Zna Mnb Ox ) enable the selective synthesis of gasoline-range hydrocarbons C5 -C11 directly from syngas. The gasoline selectivity reached 76.7 % among hydrocarbons, with only 2.3 % CH4 at 20.3 % CO conversion. The ratio of isoparaffins to n-paraffins was as high as 15, and the research octane number was estimated to be 92. Furthermore, the content of aromatic compounds in the gasoline was as low as 16 %. The composition and structure of Zna Mnb Ox play an important role in determining the overall activity. This process constitutes a potential technology for the one-step synthesis of environmentally friendly gasoline with a high octane number from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.

Abstract:Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has been exemplified in several processes to direct conversion syngas to value-added chemicals and fuels such as mixed light olefins, ethylene, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we demonstrate that the product can be steered toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a selectivity up to 89% in hydrocarbons especially propane selectivity reaching 80% at CO conversion of 63% using ZnCrOx-H-SSZ-39 catalyst. Interestingly, the quantity of the acid sites of SSZ-39 does not influence obviously the hydrocarbon distribution but the strength is crucial for selective formation of propane. This finding provides an alternative route of LPG synthesis from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.
Controlled reduction of spinel material for highly selective syngas aromatization over bifunctional catalysts

Abstract:Directly converting syngas to aromatics allowed fossil fuel and biomass to provide high-value chemicals. Combining MnFe 2 O 4 spinel material with ZSM-5 zeolite made obtaining a highly selective and stable bifunctional catalyst possible to overcome the present challenge in severe operating conditions and low aromatics content in liquid products. The precisely controlled catalyst exhibited an aromatics selectivity of 63.1 % at CO conversion of 38.3 %, leading to the content of aromatics in C 5 + being higher than 95 %, ensuring that most liquid products are aromatic hydrocarbon (dominated by C 6 ∼ C 12 aromatics), which were significant for the separation and practical application in the syngas conversion process. Characterizations provided evidence of the partially reduced spinel material forming the tiny Fe 5 C 2 particles as main active sites in CO conversion, and the formed olefins were further transformed into aromatics on acid sites of ZSM-5 zeolites. The results fully proved that the precise control of the content and proximity of each component was of great significance for the catalytic performance. Benefiting from the stable structure and potassium promoter, the reduction degree of the spinel material was controllably altered, achieving a significant improvement in aromatics selectivity. Moreover, the long-term stable reaction performance of the optimal catalyst indicated excellent application prospects for selectively converting syngas to aromatics. Thus, this work provided an idea to realize the aromatic production from syngas conversion by precisely controlling the exposure of the active centers.

Abstract:One-step conversion of syngas to aromatics (STA) over an oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst is promising as an alternative route for aromatic production. Control of aromatic distribution and enhancement of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) selectivity are still a big challenge. Decoupling the complex reaction network, the relative activity of aromatization and alkylation on ZSM-5 determines the aromatic distribution. Herein, the STA reaction was studied over Cr2O3/ZSM-5 to reveal the influence of the zeolite morphology parameters on aromatic distribution. Using the "substitution ratio of aromatic ring" SC9+/A to reflect the relative rate of alkylation to aromatization, the linear dependence of SC9+/A on the morphology parameter (1/b) of ZSM5 was revealed. The methodology for control of aromatic distribution by altering the crystal size of ZSM-5 along the b-axis is then proposed. By further enhancing the aromatization activity via ion exchange of Zn to ZSM-5, a bifunctional catalyst showing a high BTX space time yield of 2.47 mmol g(-1) h(-1) (on carbon base) with 49.1% BTX fraction is developed.
Surface Self-Cleaning Effect of Bifunctional Catalyst to Boost the High Yield Production of Aromatics Directly from Syngas

Abstract:Direct synthesis of aromatics from syngas (STA) over an oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst is promising as a petroleum alternative route. Aromatics space-time yield (STY) is a key parameter for measuring the production capacity in an industrial process. However, it is still a great challenge to achieve high aromatics STY for industrial applications. Herein, we synthesized a series of CeMnOx catalysts with a self-cleaning effect. The structures and reduction process of CeMnOx catalysts were thoroughly characterized by X-ray absorption fine structure and in situ X-ray diffraction. Changes in surface carbon species during the reaction are revealed by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that the intermediates can be converted to long-chain hydrocarbon or even graphite carbon species which can cover the surface of MnOx, inhibiting the reactants from further interacting with the active sites. Ce promotion in MnOx may remove the dissociated carbon species from the oxide surface by converting excess surface carbon species into short-chain hydrocarbons; thus, the growth of graphite carbon species is inhibited. This self-cleaning effect of CeMnOx catalysts facilitates the syngas conversion via maintaining a high exposure of active sites during the reaction, especially under high pressure and temperature. The aromatics STY (on carbon base) can reach as high as 4.27 mmol g(-1) h(-1) over CeMnOx+HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst, which outperforms the data previously reported.
