Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped BaY2F8 nanoparticles with upconversion luminescence behaviors were prepared via a hydrothermal synthesis method, followed by heated treatment at different temperatures in the range of 200℃ to 800℃. Influences of heat treatment temperature on the crystal structure, morphology, and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were investigated. Significant increases of the particle size and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were observed with increasing heat treatment temperature. Upconversion mechanism of the BaY2F8:Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles was also discussed.

Abstract:Water-soluble lanthanide (Ln(3+)) doped Bi2O3 nanospheres have been successfully prepared through a solid-state-chemistry thermal decomposition process. The nanospheres exhibit intense upconversion luminescence (UCL) by doping the Ln(3+) (Ln = Yb, Er/Ho/Tm) ions into the Bi2O3 host matrix under 980 nm excitation. The ratio of red/green emission of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Er3+ nanospheres exhibits a significant change as the calcination temperature increases and the value could reach 105.6. Moreover, the UCL of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres are temperature-sensitive, where the intensity ratios of 799 and 808 nm emissions increase monotonously with temperature. The MTT assay reveals that Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres exhibit good biocompatibility by grafting citric acid molecules on the surface. The application possibility of Bi2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanospheres as bioprobes for optical imaging in vivo is also confirmed by the high-contrast photoluminescence images between the background and the UCL imaging area.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
Upconversion Emission and Dual-Mode Sensing Characteristics of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ Microcrystals at High and Ultralow Temperatures

Abstract:In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.
Up-conversion Luminescence, Thermometry, and Optical Heating Properties of Er3+- and Yb3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 Submicro-Particles Synthesized by a Simple Molten Salt Method

Abstract:A series of Er3+- and Yb3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 (KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+) up-conversion (UC) submicro-particles have been synthesized for the first time by a simple and low-cost molten salt (MS) approach. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to analyze the phase and structure, and the prepared KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ samples exhibited a single phase tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure. The morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and submicro-rod-like particles were obtained for all samples. Under 980 nm excitation, KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ emitted bright green and weak red emissions which arose from the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions. The UC emission intensities and R-R/G (the intensity ratio between red and green emissions) were disclosed to be tightly dependent on the Yb3+ ion concentration, and the involved UC luminescence mechanism was studied. Meanwhile, the slope of logI-logP plots displayed an evident reduction with a T-s (sintering temperature) increase, which was ascribed to the saturation effect coming from the competition between UC processes and linear decay. Furthermore, temperature-dependent UC behavior and temperature sensing properties of KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ were probed based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique of UC green emission. The maximum sensor sensitivity (S) of KLN:0.04Er(3+)/Yb3+ (T-s = 900 degrees C) and KLN:0.16Er(3+)/Yb3+ (T-s = 900 degrees C) was determined to be as high as 10.90 x 10(-3) and 12.27 x 10(-3) K-1, respectively. We also showed that the particle size has an evident influence on S, which can be qualitatively interpreted by J-O theory. Thermal-cycling measurements were conducted at different temperatures, and good reliability and repeatability were confirmed. In addition, an obvious optical heating effect was also realized and the variation of temperature induced with a laser was about 32 K. These results reveal that KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ submicroparticles with high sensor sensitivity and an obvious laser-induced thermal effect are suitable for future optical thermometers and optical heaters.

Abstract:Non-contact temperature sensors utilising the fluorescence intensity ratio and the unique up-conversion (UC) luminescence of rare-earth ions have numerous benefits; however, their operational temperature range has remained limited. In this study, NaLuF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ samples were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The samples exhibited exceptional UC luminescence properties at low temperatures. The intensity of the green emission (with peak wavelengths of 540 and 546 nm) gradually decreased with increasing temperature, and the green emissions showed a unique change at low temperatures. In addition, we studied the dependence of the UC luminescence intensity on the excitation power and the variation in the decay lifetime with temperature. The experiments revealed excellent luminous performance and significantly enhanced sensitivity at low temperatures; the maximum absolute sensitivity Sa and relative sensitivity Sr of the 540 and 546 nm thermally coupled energy levels were 1.02% and 0.55% K-1, respectively. The potential temperature sensing properties of Yb3+/Ho3+-co-doped NaLuF4 makes it suitable for temperature sensing applications at temperatures as low as 30 K. This study offers a novel approach for the advancement of temperature sensing technology at low temperatures.

Abstract:Up-conversion (UC) phosphors with multiple functions are highly desirable for many potentially technological applications which can stimulate the miniaturization and multipurpose of modern devices. In this work, Tm3+- and Yb3+-codoped SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+) nanoparticles have been first synthesized by a convenient EDTA-citrate method. The structures and morphologies of SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ were measured by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared reflectivity spectra and scanning electron microscope. Under 980 nm excitation, SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ exhibited strong near-infrared (NIR) and weak visible emissions. The UC emissions were unveiled to be tightly related to the Tm3+ concentration and the optimum concentration was determined as x = 0.01. The possible UC mechanism was proposed. Importantly, based on thermo-responsive fluorescence intensity ratio approach, the optical thermometric properties were characterized in the temperature range between 313 and 573 K. The maximum sensitivity of SBT:0.01Er(3+)/Yb3+ UCNPs was obtained as 7.5 x 10(-4) K-1. Besides, excellent repeatability and stability were also realized by the thermal-cycling measurement. Furthermore, prominent photo-thermal (PT) effect was also achieved with a temperature coefficient being 0.81 degrees C.mm(2)/mW. Under periodic laser stimulation, the PT effect of the sample displayed regular response, indicating that the PT effect can be expediently controlled by 980 nm laser. These results indicate that SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ UCNPs could be potential candidates for temperature sensors and PT agents.

Abstract:The Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy as well as upconversion (UC) emission spectrum. Under the irradiation of 980 nm light, the as-prepared samples exhibited bright visible UC emissions originating from the intra-4f transitions of Tm3+ ions. The pump power-dependent UC emission spectra were measured to elaborate the involved UC mechanism. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio from the thermally coupled levels (3F2,3 and 3H4) of Tm3+ ions was obtained to analyze the thermometric performances of the studied compounds. It is evident that the reaction temperature can not only improve the UC emission intensity of the Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles, but also modify its sensor sensitivity. Meanwhile, the maximum sensor sensitivity was found to be as high as 2.1 × 10−4 K−1 with a wide temperature range of 298–778 K, suggesting its potential application for physiological temperature sensing in biological tissues and cells. Ultimately, the Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to clarify the effect of reaction temperature on the temperature sensitivity.

Abstract:A series of LuYO3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors with different Yb3+ concentrations were prepared through a melting zone method with CO2 laser. The samples emit bright up-conversion luminescence (UCL) under a 980 nm laser. The UCL intensity and the luminescence color change significantly when Yb3+ concentration changes. Besides, when doped with 3 mol% Yb3+, the UCL intensity is maximal. The thermal sensing properties of LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) were studied using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method from 298 K to 848 K. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.0050 K-1 at 366 K and 0.0167 K-1 at 298 K, respectively. Thus, the LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) fluorescent material is very suitable for thermal sensing because of the wide temperature range and the high sensitivity.

Abstract:LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of multiple trifluoroacetic acid salts. The SEM and TEM results show the size of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is about 100 nm in diagonal line, and the morphology of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is highly uniform with octahedral structure. Under the excitation of 980 nm, the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have higher upconversion luminescence efficiency compared with that of NaYF4:Yb, Er. The results indicate that the as-prepared LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles may have potential applications in bio-probes and displays.

Abstract:Uniform and monodispersed upconversion nanoparticles Sr2GdF7 codoped with Yb3+ and Er3+ were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The crystal structure and morphology of as-prepared nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. A possible upconversion mechanism implicated in the nanoparticles is discussed based on the dependence of upconversion emissions on pump power. Furthermore, the temperature sensing ability of Sr2GdF7 nanoparticles codoped with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions is investigated by employing temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity ratios for two green upconversion emission bands (2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2) in the temperature range of 300–660 K. The maximum sensitivity achieved in this developed material is approximately 1.67% K−1 at 300 K. This work provides a new qualified upconversion nanomaterial for application in optical thermometry.

Abstract:Owing to the great role and application potential of upconversion luminescent materials in the field of temperature sensing, it is very essential to develop new rare-earth materials with excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL) and temperature sensing properties. In this study, an Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 as a UCL material was synthesized. In this system, Er is used as the luminescence centre; Yb is used as the sensitizer, and Gd can effectively adjust the crystal field of the matrix material and improve the UCL performance. In addition, the composition and intrinsic luminescence mechanism of the materials are studied in detail. It can be seen that the UCL intensity was strengthened for Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 compared to Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 . The results show that Gd 3+ can effectively improve the UCL intensity of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped YNbO 4 samples. Using fluorescence intensity ratio technology, we obtained the temperature sensing performance of the material, which has the highest sensitivity at 493 K (0.0033 K −1 ). This suggests that the material has great application potential in the fields of UCL and temperature sensing.

Abstract:Novel flower-like α-NaYb(Mn)F4:Er(3+)/Tm(3+)@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent nanothermometers have been developed by combining liquid-solid solution hydrothermal strategy with thermal decomposition strategy. Under 980 nm excitation, they exhibit intense upconversion luminescence and temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence over a wide temperature range. The influence of temperature on "band-shape" upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra and the intensity of emission bands are analyzed and discussed in detail. We further successfully test and verify that intensity ratios REr of (2)H11/2 → (4)I15/2 and (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 and RTm of (1)G4 → (3)H5 and (3)H4 → (3)H6 are sensitive to temperature, and the population of active ions follows Boltzmann-type population distribution very well. These luminescent nanothermometers could be applied over a wide temperature range from 123 to 423 K with high sensitivity, which enable them to be excellent candidates for temperature sensors.

Abstract:Environment-friendly potassium sodium niobate-based ferroelectrics have been widely and deeply studied for their electrical properties, but there remains much potential for applications in other fields, one of which is in optical temperature sensing. Herein, a host (K,Na)Li0.04NbO3:0.5 mol% Er material with an orthogonal–tetragonal phase transition was constructed by Li+ regulation and then increased Yb2O3 codoping used to promote the occurrence of orthogonal to tetragonal and tetragonal to pseudocubic phase transitions. Interestingly, codoping with Yb2O3 as a sensitizer and phase structural changes regulated the resulting materials' luminescent characteristics and greatly enhanced luminescence intensity and temperature sensing properties, compared with those of merely Er3+-doped samples. In addition, strong green and red light emissions were related to the large absorption cross-section of Yb3+ near 980 nm, which transferred more energy to Er3+. In particular, significantly enhanced red light, or red shift, was associated with energy back transfer at high Yb3+ concentrations. Furthermore, the optimal ceramic was (K, Na)Li0.04NbO3:0.5 mol % Er/2.5 mol % Yb (KNL0.04N:0.5 Er/2.5 Yb), and its maximum absolute and relative sensitivity of 0.0112 and 0.0173 K–1, respectively, which were higher than those of other reports.
