Abstract:The non-contact thermometry based on fluorescence intensity ratio of phosphors has been extensively investigated owing to its high sensitivity and fast response. However, most of them only use a single mode of upconversion or downconversion emission for temperature sensing and ignore the affection of the humidity. In this work, the Yb/Er ions doped La2Mo3O12 microcrystals with nonhygroscopic property and multimode luminescence have been developed for temperature sensing. The optical thermometer could be based on not only luminescent intensity ratio of upconversion and downconversion, but also average fluorescence decay lifetime. The maximal absolute sensitivity can reach up to 6.2% K-1 and the maximal relative sensitivity is 1.63% K-1. Moreover, the fluorescence emission intensity of the doped La2Mo3O12 microcrystals will not be affected by the humidity compared to some doped molybdate and tungstate. These excellent performances suggest that the La2Mo3O12:Yb/Er microcrystals possess great potential for practical applications in temperature sensing. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. Pure hexagonal [math]-NaYF4 micron crystals were synthesized by the hydrothermal method with the up-conversion luminescence properties studied by doping Yb[math]/Ho[math]. The up-conversion fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime of [math]-NaYF4 micron crystals were determined by FLS-980 transient fluorescence spectrometer. By changing the doping concentration of Yb[math]/Ho[math], the optimal doping concentration was confirmed to be 20%Yb[math]/2%Ho[math]. The fluorescence spectrum was obtained by changing pump power, the relationship between power and intensity was analyzed, and the [math]-NaYF4 micron crystal green and red emission up-conversion process was obtained into a two-photon process. The 5F[math]I8 and 5S[math]I8 of the sample were thermally coupled to obtain a large absolute sensitivity (Sa) of low temperature. The maximum absolute sensitivity within the range of 64–194[math]K is 0.0097[math]K[math] at 144[math]K, while maximum absolute sensitivity at 333[math]K is 0.00335[math]K[math] in the range of 293–493[math]K. The experimental results show that the sensing characteristics of [math]-NaYF4:Yb[math]/Ho[math] at low temperature are better than those at high temperature, and it has the potential to be used in the field of temperature sensing.

Abstract:Short wavelength upconversion luminescence of Ho3+ was investigated for temperature sensing with fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique in Yb3+/Ho3+ co-doped β-NaLuF4 hexagonal microprisms synthesized by hydrothermal method. The origins of two emission peaks located at 482.0nm and 443.6nm were identified for the first time. Further study on temperature dependence of 980nm-excited upconversion FIR between two thermally coupled multiplets (5F1/5G6 and 5F2,3/3K8) was carried out from 390K to 780K. The FIR increases with temperature monotonously and the experimental data are well fitted with a theoretical function. A large energy difference (1438cm−1) is obtained from the fitting curve, which could account for a higher relative sensitivity in this system than most RE3+ doped FIR-based temperature sensors, making this optical material a promising candidate for high-sensitive temperature sensing.

Abstract:The color-tunable upconversion (UC) emission and optical temperature sensing based on non-thermal coupled levels (NTCL) were observed from the Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped Lu3NbO7 phosphors synthesized by the solid-state method. The phosphors are capable of generating color tunable UC luminescence from green (yellow) to yellow (green) with the increase of the Yb3+ (Ho3+) concentration. The tunable emission is due to the different energy back transfer processes from Ho3+ to Yb3+. The temperature sensing performances are investigated in the temperature range of 293-573 K based on NTCL by using fluorescence intensity ratio technology. The maximum absolute sensitivities are 0.37%K-1, 0.94%K-1, 0.27%K-1 at 298 K, which are based on three pairs NTCL of (F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(5)-> I-5(8)), (F-5(5)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(7)) and (F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(7)) of Ho3+, respectively. The above results suggest that the as-prepared Lu3NbO7:Yb3+/Ho3+ phosphors have great potential for the application prospects of upconverter, color tunable device and optical temperature sensor.

Abstract:The Y2O3: Ho3+/Yb3+ single crystal fiber phosphor material has been prepared by laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. The up-conversion (UC) luminescence emitted by the F-5(4)/S-5(2) -> I-5(8) and F-5(5) -> I-5(8) transitions of Ho3+ was obtained under a 976 nm laser. The UC luminescence features of the prepared phosphor material were studied and the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the green emission (F-5(4)/S-5(2) -> I-5(8)) to red emission (F-5(5) -> I-5(8)) of Ho3+ was analyzed over the range from 298 K to 623 K. The results show that the FIR of the two UC emissions of Ho3+ is sensitive to the change of temperature. However, the relation of FIR to temperature is not monotonous. Nevertheless, the FIR monotonously decreases with the increasing temperature in the range of 298-448 K, thus can be used for temperature sensing. At 298K, the absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity reach 0.0489 K-1 and 0.0103 K-1, respectively, indicating that the Y2O3: Ho3+/Yb3+ single crystal fiber phosphor material can be a good candidate used for temperature sensor with high sensitivity.

In present work, we developed LiYF4:20Yb(3+), 1Ho(3+) (mol%) micro octahedrons obtained by a modified hydrothermal method. The temperature dependent up-conversion (UC) emission and luminescence decays for LiYF4:20Yb(3+), 1Ho(3+) under 976 nm LD excitation with various power density were studied systematically in the temperature range from 100 K to 500 K. The green and red UC emissions are sensitive to the sample temperature whereas the excitation power density in the studied temperature ranges plays a negligible role on the red to green UC emissions ratio. The non-contact optical temperature sensing behaviors were investigated based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of red (R3 + R4) and green (G3) at temperature from 100 K to 500 K, which are ascribed to non-thermally coupled levels of Ho3+:F-5(5) and F-5(4), respectively. The maximum absolute sensitivity (S-a) of 0.0477 K-1 and maximum relative sensitivity (S-r) of 0.0129 K-1 at the temperature range of 100-500 K based on FIR of (R3 + R4)/G3 were found. The mechanism of temperature effect on UC emission was discussed. The heating and cooling cycle test indicates the high thermal stability of LiYF4:20Yb(3+), 1Ho(3+). Abstract:Upconversion (UC) nanomaterials are of interest to researchers because of their excellent photostability, effective quantum efficiency and optical temperature dependence. However, most UC nanomaterials are thermally quenched, which causes optical nanothermometers to be susceptible to their own thermal effects, reducing the accuracy of temperature measurements. In this paper, NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ /Gd 3+ nanorods with UC luminescence and resistance to thermal quenching are prepared through a simple hydrothermal method. The UC luminescence intensity of NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ /Gd 3+ nanorods is adjusted by doping with Tm 3+ ions. The luminescence intensity at each location shows different temperature dependence as the temperature increases. When the temperature reaches 573 K, the integrated luminescence intensity is three times that at 293 K. At the same time, the intensity at all temperature points in the range of 293–573 K is greater than the intensity at 293 K, which shows that the nanorods have excellent resistance to thermal quenching. In addition, the relative sensitivity ( S r ) of LIR( I 696 / I 476 ), LIR( I 696 / I 541 ), LIR( I 696 /I 646 ), LIR( I 696 / I 802 ), and LIR( I 541 / I 476 ) is investigated based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique. The S r of LIR( I 696 / I 802 ) is found to have larger values in the low-temperature range, while S r of LIR( I 696 / I 476 ) has larger values in the high-temperature range. The use of LIR( I 696 / I 802 ) and LIR( I 696 / I 476 ) in separate temperature bands allows S r to reach 0.93–1.67 %K −1 in the range of 293–573 K, confirming that the nanorods have high S r over a wide temperature interval. This study indicates that the NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ /Gd 3+ nanorods are promising candidates for optical thermometers with high sensitivity, wide temperature range, and resistance to thermal quenching.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb3+/Tm3+@NaGdF4:Nd3+/Yb3+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared using a solvothermal method, and the effects of key factors such as the content of sensitiser Nd3+ and Yb3+ on their luminescence properties were investigated. The nanoparticles are homogeneous in size and well dispersed. Under 808 nm excitation, it can produce strong upconversion fluorescence. At the same time, the nanoparticles have good temperature-sensing properties at the thermally coupled energy levels of 700 nm and 646 nm for Tm3+. Using its fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR), accurate temperature measurements can be performed, and it has been found that it exhibits different temperature sensing properties in low and high-temperature regions. The maximum relative sensitivity was found to be 0.88% K-1 and 1.89% K-1 for the low-temperature region of 285 K-345 K and the high-temperature region of 345 K-495 K. The nanoparticles were applied to the internal temperature measurement of lithium batteries and the actual high-temperature environment, respectively, and were found to have good temperature measurement performance.

Abstract:Non-contact optical temperature sensors are highly sought after by researchers due to their satisfactory temperature resolution (δ(T) < 0.1 °C), high relative thermal sensitivity (Sr > 1% °C-1), fast temporal response (t < 0.1 s), and long-term optical stability. In this study, NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+/Tm3+ upconversion nanoparticles were prepared by a solvothermal method, and their crystal structure, microscopic morphology, and luminescence mechanism, together with the temperature sensing properties of the specimens, were investigated. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the specimens exhibited strong upconversion luminescence, and the emission peaks corresponded to the characteristic energy level jumps of Ho3+ and Tm3+, respectively. The temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of the samples were investigated based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique over a temperature gradient of 295-495 K. The samples are based on thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs: 1G4(1,2) → 3H6(Tm3+)) and non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs: 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F3 → 5I8(Ho3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 1G4 → 3H6(Tm3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F5 → 5I8(Ho3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F4 → 5I8(Ho3+)) for temperature sensing performance. The maximum absolute sensitivity (Sa), relative sensitivity (Sr), and minimum temperature resolution δ(T) were found to be 0.0126 K-1 (495 K), 1.7966% K-1 (345 K), and 0.0167 K, respectively, which are better than those of most sensing materials, and the simultaneous action of multiple coupling energy levels can further improve the temperature precision. This study indicates that the sample has a good value for optical temperature measurement and also provides new ideas for the exploration of other high-quality optical temperature sensing materials.

Abstract:The Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy as well as upconversion (UC) emission spectrum. Under the irradiation of 980 nm light, the as-prepared samples exhibited bright visible UC emissions originating from the intra-4f transitions of Tm3+ ions. The pump power-dependent UC emission spectra were measured to elaborate the involved UC mechanism. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio from the thermally coupled levels (3F2,3 and 3H4) of Tm3+ ions was obtained to analyze the thermometric performances of the studied compounds. It is evident that the reaction temperature can not only improve the UC emission intensity of the Tm3+-doped NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles, but also modify its sensor sensitivity. Meanwhile, the maximum sensor sensitivity was found to be as high as 2.1 × 10−4 K−1 with a wide temperature range of 298–778 K, suggesting its potential application for physiological temperature sensing in biological tissues and cells. Ultimately, the Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to clarify the effect of reaction temperature on the temperature sensitivity.

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry is recently gaining popularity in fields of science and technology. However, most of the previous literature are used for the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technology to obtain the temperature based on thermal coupling energy levels (TCLs), which hindered the sensitivity and limited the applications. Here, NaYF4:Yb/Tm@NaYF4:Yb/Ho microcrystals were prepared by a hydrothermal method. Based on the non-thermally coupling energy levels (NTCLs) of double luminescence centers Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions, the materials exhibited temperature-dependent luminescence properties in the range of 304K to 574K. The maximum sensitivities were found to be Sa=0.135K-1 at 574K and Sr =1.101%K-1 at 484K based on red (Tm3+) and green (Ho3+) emission bands. This study provides a promising new strategy to break the TCLs restriction and the material has potential applications in optical thermometry.

Abstract:A series of Na5Y9F32 single crystals multi-doped with fixed Eu3+/Ho3+/Yb3+ (0.3mol%/0.5mol%/0.3mol%) and various Gd3+ from 0 to 1.5mol% were synthesized by a Bridgman technique. The patterns of X-ray diffraction (XRD) affirmed that the obtained crystals had pure Na5Y9F32 crystal phase at the present doping concentrations. The Gd3+ doping concentration-dependent up-conversion (UC) luminescence spectra of the prepared samples were investigated upon excitation of 980 nm laser. Two up-conversion emission bands of Ho3+ were observed, including green emission at 544 nm of the transition from 5F4/5S2 to 5I8 level, and red emission at 658 nm from 5F5 to 5I8. The up-conversion intensities at both 544 nm and 658 nm emissions increased as gradual increment of Gd3+ doping concentration from 0 to 1.5mol%. The effect of Gd3+ on the crystal field of the crystal were explored by the fluorescent spectra of Eu3+ upon excitation of 394 nm light and the optical intensity parameters of Ho3+ ions. The reduction of lattice symmetry by Gd3+ doping resulted into the augmentation of 544 nm and 658 nm up-conversion emissions. The temperature sensing characteristics of Na5Y9F32: Eu3+/Yb3+/Ho3+/Gd3+ from 298 K to 473 K were explored by fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of I544nm/I658nm, and the Gd3+ doping was significantly beneficial for enhancement of the sensitivity. The absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity were enhanced from 2.08 %K−1 to 2.29 %K−1, and 0.23 %K−1 to 0.74 % K−1 by 1.5mol% Gd3+ doping, respectively. The high sensitivity and high thermal stability make the Na5Y9F32: Eu3+/Ho3+/Yb3+/Gd3+ UC crystal be an ideal material for temperature sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, Er3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2(1-x%)Lu2x %O3 solid solution was prepared through the sol-gel method, and the substitution of Y3+ by Lu3+ ions in Y2O3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction data. The up-conversion emissions of samples under 980 nm excitation and the relative up-conversion processes are investigated. The emission shapes do not vary with the change in doping concentration due to the unaltered cubic phase. The red-to-green ratio changes from 2.7 to 7.8 and then declines to 4.4 as the doping concentration of Lu3+ increases from 0 to 100. The emission lifetimes of green and red have similar variation: the emission lifetime decreases with doping concentration changing from 0 to 60 and rises as the doping concentration continues to increase. The reason why the emission ratio and lifetime change could be originated to the exacerbation of cross-relaxing process and the change of radiative transition probabilities. The temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) shows that all samples can be used in noncontact optical temperature sensing, and the method of local structure distortion can be used to improve sensitivity further. The max sensing sensitivities of FIR based on R 538/563 and R red/green reach 0.011 K-1 (483 K) and 0.21 K-1 (300 K). The results display that Er3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2(1-x %)Lu2x %O3 solid solution can be potential candidates for optical temperature sensing in different temperature ranges.

Abstract:Novel flower-like α-NaYb(Mn)F4:Er(3+)/Tm(3+)@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent nanothermometers have been developed by combining liquid-solid solution hydrothermal strategy with thermal decomposition strategy. Under 980 nm excitation, they exhibit intense upconversion luminescence and temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence over a wide temperature range. The influence of temperature on "band-shape" upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra and the intensity of emission bands are analyzed and discussed in detail. We further successfully test and verify that intensity ratios REr of (2)H11/2 → (4)I15/2 and (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 and RTm of (1)G4 → (3)H5 and (3)H4 → (3)H6 are sensitive to temperature, and the population of active ions follows Boltzmann-type population distribution very well. These luminescent nanothermometers could be applied over a wide temperature range from 123 to 423 K with high sensitivity, which enable them to be excellent candidates for temperature sensors.
