Abstract:In order to strengthen the international academic exchanges and cooperation, promote the development of phytochemical natural products, functional foods and related scientific research, 4th International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (4-ISPMF) was held from November 30 to December 5, 2020, Xi’an, China. The conference was hosted by International Association of Dietetic Nutrition and Safety, European Phytochemical Society, Asian Phytochemical Society, eFood, and Food Frontiers, and organized by Northwest University and Shanxi Normal University. Representatives from more than 60 universities participated in this event online and onsite.
The Review of Recent Research into Urban Community Sports in China

Abstract:The present study reviews recent research into urban community sports in China. Whilst affirming the validity of the research the study indicates that there are some pitfalls that need to be avoided in such research, for example: the basic conceptual framework is superficial; the research design is inappropriate; and the research instruments employed are inadequate in terms of innovation and depth. The study suggests that Chinese culture, society and sport practices should be taken account of when overseas frames of reference are employed.

Abstract:Nano-, bio-, and information-science and technology constitute the most important and influential three research fields in the beginning of 21st century. In the nanometer scale, the above three fields are closely related to each other; and the cooperation among scientists of physics, chemistry, mechanics, materials science, biology, and microelectronics has become more necessary than ever before. Initiated and supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Symposium of Young Scientists on Physical Mechanics and Multidisciplinary Problems in Nanotechnology was held in Beijing during October 18-20, 2002. This article reviews the background and motivation of this symposium, gives the main contents of the 31 invited lectures, and summarizes the comments and suggestions of the participants on issues such as the multidisciplinary cooperation.

Abstract:4D printing has attracted great interest since the concept was introduced in 2012. The past 5 years have witnessed rapid advances in both 4D printing processes and materials. Unlike 3D printing, 4D printing allows the printed part to change its shape and function with time in response to change in external conditions such as temperature, light, electricity, and water. In this review, we first overview the history of 4D printing and discuss its definition. We then summarize recent technological advances in 4D printing with focuses on methods, materials, and their intrinsic links. Finally, we discuss potential applications and offer perspectives for this exciting new field.

Abstract:The 45 th Shuangqing Forum sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China entitled"Biomimetic Materials and Devices"was held in Sanya,Hainan Province during January 25—29,2010. More than 50 experts and scholars from appromixtly 20 universities and research institutions in the fields of chemistry, bionics,biology,materials science,nanoscience,and life sciences attended the forum.Among the participants, there are 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 10 chief scientists of National Basic Research Project.In combination with national imperatives and international research frontiers in the field of bionics, the participants further discussed the research status and development trends of biomimetic materials and devices. Some concrete suggestions for the prior research fields were also proposed in this forum.

Abstract:The 5 th China Youth’s Symposium on Engineering Geology(CYSEG)was successfully held in Xianlin campus of Nanjing University from 6th to 7th of May 201 6.This is the first time for the 3rd Youth Committee of Engineering Geology in China to organize such a symposium with specific theme.There are 355 participants.The theme of the symposium is “Soil engineering geological characteristics and structure”,which is the specialty of Nanjing University in Engineering Geology.A total of 20 keynote speeches were presented.These speeches are rich in content with depth and breadth.This symposium is a grand event for young scholars in engineering geology and related fields to initiate academic discussions and in-depth exchange.It plays a positive role for promoting academic exchanges between young scholars, strengthening academic ties of geological engineering with geotechnical engineering and other related disciplines,training communication and organization skills of young scholars and nurturing young talents.

Abstract:As a rapidly developing area in biomechanics,mechanics of biological materials aims to investigate the fundamental relationship between functions,properties,structures,and compositions of various natural biological materials at different length scales and the underlying physical mechanisms through experimental research and theoretical analysis,and to provide inspirations from the splendid living world for the biomimetic design of new materials.In this paper,some recent achievements,mainly made by Chinese scholars in this field,are briefly reviewed,including the stiffening and toughening mechanisms of such biological composites as nacres and horns,the relation between the surface wetting behavior and the micro/nanostructures,and some relevant biomimetic applications as well.The contents of seven invited papers published in this special issue are also introduced.

Abstract:Professor Shu Chien is a world-renowned leader and founder of Bioengineering. In particular, he has made seminal contributions to advancing our systematic and insightful understanding of how cells perceive their physical/mechanical environment and coordinate cellular functions. In this review, as part of a tribute to Prof. Shu Chien's scientific achievement, we summarize the research progress in understanding the physiology of bone cells interacting with different mechanical/physical environments during bone tissue regeneration/repair. We first introduce the cellular composition of the bone tissue and the mechanism of the physiological bone regeneration/repair process. We then describe the properties and development of biomaterials for bone tissue engineering, followed by the highlighting of research progresses on the cellular response to mechanical environmental cues. Finally, several latest advancements in bone tissue regeneration and remaining challenges in the field are discussed for future research directions.

Abstract:As the frontier of biomechanics research,cellular and molecular biomechanics is an interdisciplinary research field at the cutting edge of applied mechanics and life science and biology,which brings us many challenging problems to the current theories and techniques in biomechanics due to its importance and complexity.This paper will give a brief review on several of these challenging problems and make some comments on the papers included in this special issue,such as the mechanical properties and modeling methods of cell,the modeling of mechanochemical couplig and multiscale modeling methods in cell mechanics,so as to stimulate the common interest within not only the biomechanics but also the applied mechanics community.

Abstract:The 13th National Postgraduates Symposium on Environmental and Occupational Medicine was held successfully in School of Public Health,Fudan University from November 5 to 8,2017.The symposium was sponsored by the Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine (JEOM),School of Public Health,Fudan University,and Shanghai Preventive Medicine Association.About 130 participants from nationwide universities and research institutes were in attendance and 66 outstanding articles were received.The theme for the symposium was From research to intervention:Healing the schism.The contents of this symposium contained expert reports,postgraduate reports,group academic exchange,guest lecture,etc.The experts and the graduate students had a good communication at the meeting,and the atmosphere was very warm.JEOM and Shanghai Municipal Center for Diseases Control and Prevention extended their reach in teachers and students and the meeting laid a solid foundation for attracting more potential authors and high-quality articles.

Abstract:6th International Symposium on Social Science and Management Innovation (SSMI 2024) was held in Macao, China during June 8-9, 2024. This conference was sponsored by Research Center of Engineering and Science, and was attended by academicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, government agencies and policy-makers, postgraduates from China and all over the world. The aim of the conference is to provide an interactive platform for the academicians, R & D organizations, industries, innovators, entrepreneurs, government agencies and policy-makers etc., from both China and abroad to exchange ideas on recent researches and advances in the domain of Social Science and Management Innovation with its prospective application in the various interdisciplinary domains of engineering. This two-day conference is being organized in technical association with Research Center of Engineering and Science and will include invited keynote talks and oral paper presentations from both academia and industry to ignite our young minds, to initiate them in the field of meaningful research and thereby enrich their existing knowledge. SSMI 2024 has received 97 manuscripts. And more than 20 submissions have been accepted by our reviewers and the Press. By submitting a paper to SSMI 2024, the authors agreed to the review process and understand that papers undergo a peer-review process. Manuscripts would be reviewed by appropriately qualified experts in the field selected by the Conference Committee, who would give detailed comments and-if the submission gets accepted-the authors submitted a revised version that considers this feedback. All papers were reviewed using a double-blind review process: authors declare their names and affiliations in the manuscript for the reviewers to see, but reviewers did not know each other's identities, nor did the authors receive information about who has reviewed their manuscript. The Committees invested great efforts in reviewing the papers submitted to the conference and organizing the sessions to enable the participants to gain maximum benefit.
