Abstract:After decades of development, stochastic dynamics has now become a relatively mature science field. The stochastic dynamics consists of two elements: the dynamical system which serves as a study object and whose input and output change over time; uncertainties that present in system properties, input and output which can be modeled as stochastic variables or stochastic process. Stochastic dynamics covers the following topics: modeling by characteristics of stochastic disturbance, methods, and procedures to obtain the stochastic response, stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation, damage and reliability of the stochastic system. In brief, stochastic dynamics studies on qualitative and quantitative conditions of dynamical system under stochastic disturbances. This chapter introduces basic theories of stochastic dynamics.

Abstract:Stability is a basic requirement of power system. The response of power system to a stochastic disturbance is also a stochastic process. At this point, stability conditions of the stochastic process are to be given by probability or statistics, and usually defined through the convergence of the norm of the dynamic response. Meanwhile, the convergence of the stochastic process can be defined in different senses, so can the stochastic stability. This chapter introduces several common definition modes (i.e., the mean stability, mean square stability, and asymptotic stability) to demonstrate associated theorems.

Abstract:It is widely believed that the power-law is a proper probability distribution being effectively applied for evolution in tau-EO (extremal optimization), a general-purpose stochastic local-search approach inspired by self-organized criticality, and its applications in some NP-hard problems, e.g., graph partitioning, graph coloring, spill glass, etc. In this study, we discover that the exponential distributions or hybrid ones (e.g., power-laws with exponential cutoff) being popularly used in the research of network sciences may replace the original power-laws in a modified tau-EO method called self-organized algorithm (SOA), and provide better performances than other statistical physics oriented methods, such as simulated annealing, tau-EO and SOA etc., from the experimental results on random Euclidean traveling salesman problems (TSP) and non-uniform instances. From the perspective of optimization, our results appear to demonstrate that the power-law is not the only proper probability distribution for evolution in EO-similar methods at least for TSP, the exponential and hybrid distributions may be other choices. On Bounded Stochastic Processes

Abstract:Stochastic processes of bounded variation are generated based on their two most important characteristics: spectral density functions and probability density functions. Two models are presented for the purpose: the randomized harmonic model and the nonlinear filter model. In the randomized harmonic model, a random noise is introduced in the phase angle; while in the nonlinear filter model, a set of nonlinear Ito differential equations are employed. In both methods, the spectral density of a stochastic process to be modeled, either with one peak or with multiple peaks, can be matched by adjusting model parameters. However, the probability density of the process generated by the randomized harmonic model has a fixed shape and cannot be adjusted. On the other hand, the nonlinear filter model covers a variety of profiles of probability distributions. For the Monte Carlo simulation using these two models, equivalent and alternative expressions are proposed, which make the simulation more effective and efficient.

Abstract:We introduce probability thermodynamics and probability quantum fields. By probability we mean that there is an unknown operator, physical or nonphysical, whose eigenvalues obey a certain statistical distribution. Eigenvalue spectra define spectral functions. Various thermodynamic quantities in thermodynamics and effective actions in quantum field theory are all spectral functions. In the scheme, eigenvalues obey a probability distribution, so a probability distribution determines a family of spectral functions in thermodynamics and quantum field theory. This leads to probability thermodynamics and probability quantum fields determined by a probability distribution. In constructing spectral functions, we encounter a problem. The conventional definition of spectral functions applies only to lower bounded spectra. In our scheme, however, there are two types of spectra: lower bounded spectra, corresponding to the probability distribution with nonnegative random variables, and the lower unbounded spectra, corresponding to probability distributions with negative random variables. To take the lower unbounded spectra into account, we generalize the definition of spectral functions by analytical continuation. In some cases, we encounter divergences. We remove the divergence by a renormalization procedure. Moreover, in virtue of spectral theory in physics, we generalize some concepts in probability theory. For example, the moment-generating function in probability theory does not always exist. We redefine the moment-generating function as the generalized heat kernel introduced in this paper, which makes the concept definable when the definition in probability theory fails. Thermodynamic quantities, vacuum amplitudes, one-loop effective actions, and vacuum energies for various probability distributions are presented.

Abstract:Probability theory arose originally in connection with games of chance and then for a long time it was used primarily to investigate the credibility of testimony of witnesses in the “ethical” sciences. Nevertheless, probability has become a very powerful mathematical tool in understanding those aspects of the world that cannot be described by deterministic laws. Probability has succeeded in ?nding strict determinate relationships where chance seemed to reign and so terming them “laws of chance” combining such contrasting - tions in the nomenclature appears to be quite justi?ed. This introductory chapter discusses such notions as determinism, chaos and randomness, p- dictibility and unpredictibility, some initial approaches to formalizing r- domness and it surveys certain problems that can be solved by probability theory. This will perhaps give one an idea to what extent the theory can - swer questions arising in speci?c random occurrences and the character of the answers provided by the theory. 1. 1 The Nature of Randomness The phrase “by chance” has no single meaning in ordinary language. For instance, it may mean unpremeditated, nonobligatory, unexpected, and so on. Its opposite sense is simpler: “not by chance” signi?es obliged to or bound to (happen). In philosophy, necessity counteracts randomness. Necessity signi?es conforming to law – it can be expressed by an exact law. The basic laws of mechanics, physics and astronomy can be formulated in terms of precise quantitativerelationswhichmustholdwithironcladnecessity.

Firstly, the principle of probability and stochastic process is introduced, including random variables, multivariate random variables, the stochastic process and its time-varying probability distribution and correlation, the basic operation of multistate probability distribution, etc. Secondly, the basic theory of stochastic programming is introduced, including the probability index of risk value and conditional risk value, the mixed probability optimization model of stochastic and deterministic decision variables, the probability optimization solution method based on multistate probability distribution, the sequence operation of multistate probability distribution, and the fast Fourier calculation method. Finally, probability and stochastic programming methods are introduced. The probabilistic model, nonsequential production simulation model, and optimal planning model of renewable energy output, such as wind power/photovoltaic, which are often used in stochastic programming models, are given. The solution method of the probabilistic optimal planning model considering random variables is introduced.

Abstract:This text presents an unified approach of probability and statistics in the pursuit of understanding and computation of randomness in engineering or physical or social system with prediction with generalizability. Starting from elementary probability and theory of distributions, the material progresses towards conceptual and advances in prediction and generalization in statistical models and large sample theory. We also pay special attention to unified derivation approach and one-shot proof of each and every probabilistic concept. Our presentation of intuitive and computation framework of conditional distribution and probability are strongly influenced by unified patterns of linear models for regression and for classification. The text ends with a future note on the unified approximation of the linear models, the generalized linear models and the discovery models to neural networks and a summarized ML system.

Abstract:The Stieltjes Process is introduced to construct orthogonal polynomials for the random variables with arbitrary probability distributions in the application of the generalized Polynomial Chaos. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified by comparing the results with that of the Monte Carlo method. It is demonstrated that the polynomial chaos method achieves the same accuracy as the Monte Carlo method but higher efficiency when it is used to assess the influence of randomness of input parameters in the crosstalk simulation.

Abstract:Physics is based on probabilities as fundamental entities of a mathematical description. Expectation values of observables are computed according to the classical statistical rule. The overall probability distribution for one world covers all times. The quantum formalism arises once one focuses on the evolution of the time-local probabilistic information. Wave functions or the density matrix allow the formulation of a general linear evolution law for classical statistics. The quantum formalism for classical statistics is a powerful tool which allows us to implement for generalized Ising models the momentum observable with the associated Fourier representation. The association of operators to observables permits the computation of expectation values in terms of the density matrix by the usual quantum rule. We show that probabilistic cellular automata are quantum systems in a formulation with discrete time steps and real wave functions. With a complex structure the evolution operator for automata can be expressed in terms of a Hamiltonian involving fermionic creation and annihilation operators. The time-local probabilistic information amounts to a subsystem of the overall probabilistic system which is correlated with its environment consisting of the past and future. Such subsystems typically involve probabilistic observables for which only a probability distribution for their possible measurement values is available. Incomplete statistics does not permit to compute classical correlation functions for arbitrary subsystem-observables. Bell's inequalities are not generally applicable.

Abstract:This work aims to build a bridge between probability methods and finite element methods. It starts with considering probability distributions supported in an interval [a,b], which incorporate the traditional probability distributions defined on the whole real space as limit cases on the one hand, lead to a type of spherical probability models with wide potential applications on the other hand. This type of probability has scaling and symmetry feature, and sufficient conditions under which a density function can be generated through discrete polynomial spectrum are given in this work followed by concrete examples. The density function ρ obtained in this way has the advantage of being positive definite. Computer based numerical simulation shows that the theoretically verified criteria for probability distribution are almost optimal with respect to our testing examples. After the establishment of an approximation theorem in L1 space, we propose a probabilistic Galerkin scheme that can be either continuous or discontinuous, which is potentially useful to asymptotically solve some PDEs on the sphere locally and globally.

Abstract:Probability theory can be modified in essentially one way while maintaining consistency with the basic Bayesian framework. This modification results in copies of standard probability theory for real, complex or quaternion probabilities. These copies, in turn, allow one to derive quantum theory while restoring standard probability theory in the classical limit. The argument leading to these three copies constrain physical theories in the same sense that Cox's original arguments constrain alternatives to standard probability theory. This sequence is presented in some detail with emphasis on questions beyond basic quantum theory where new insights are needed.

Abstract:The main goal of these notes is to give an introduction to the mathematics of quantum noise and some of its applications in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We start with some reminders from the theory of classical stochastic processes. We then provide a brief overview of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, from the viewpoint of quantum probability and adopting the language of Hudson and Parthasarathy. We introduce quantum stochastic processes on a boson Fock space and their calculus. Whenever possible, we make connections with the relevant concepts in classical probability theory. As an application of the theory, we introduce the theory of open quantum systems, with emphasis on the physics and modeling aspects of these systems.

Abstract:In this paper,we mainly review the basic concepts in statistical mechanics of stochastic processes,including entropy production,flux,potential,equilibrium state,temperature in stochastic processes and their mathematical definitions.Moreover,we review some basic properties of the processes derived from these concepts,including fluctuation theorems,Green-Kubo formula,and the monotonicity of power spectrum density.Especially,we point out that we can introduce the temperature parameter in a Markov process to get the multi-layer clustering of the system modeled by the process.This multi-layer clustering shows the interaction network structure among the states.Finally,we give some examples of application problems,in which one can model by stochastic processes to get the answer,explanation,and understanding of concerned problems in natural sciences.
