Abstract:Randomness exists extensively in nature, engineering and social systems, the power system not excepted.Randomness has gradually taken into consideration in power system analysis since the 1970s, with emphasis on analysis of steady-state random problems while research on power system dynamics is still based on the deterministic theory.In recent years, with increasing integration of typical sets of stochastic sources into power systems, such as the large-scale renewable power generation and electric vehicles, the influence of randomness on power system dynamics can no longer be neglected.For this reason, a research framework is proposed for stochastic dynamics of power system focusing on dynamic problems under the action of randomness, including stochastic dynamic modelling, stochastic dynamic responses, stochastic stability, stochastic dynamic security and stochastic optimum control of power system.Some suggestions are given for the research.

Abstract:The stochastic dynamics of power system is a new field that requires a top-down design. In this chapter, a research framework is constructed for that purpose, based on the analysis of the background, transformations, and stochastic properties of power systems. Proposals for the research are provided by focusing on issues with the dynamics of power systems subjected to stochastic factors, including the stochastic dynamics model and the stochastic features of power systems (e.g., dynamic response, stability, security, and optimal control).

Abstract:This paper is concerned with Devaney chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems. It is shown that in its definition, the two former conditions, i.e., transitivity and density of periodic points, in a set imply the last one, i.e., sensitivity, in the case that the set is unbounded, while a similar result holds under two additional conditions in the other case that the set is bounded. Furthermore, some chaotic behavior is studied for a class of non-autonomous systems, each of which is governed by a convergent sequence of continuous maps.

A Kind of Noise-Induced Transition to Noisy Chaos in Stochastically Perturbed Dynamical System

Abstract:We investigate a kind of noise-induced transition to noisy chaos in dynamical systems. Due to similar phenomenological structures of stable hyperbolic attractors excited by various physical realizations from a given stationary random process, a specific Poincaré map is established for stochastically perturbed quasi-Hamiltonian system. Based on this kind of map, various point sets in the Poincaré’s cross-section and dynamical transitions can be analyzed. Results from the customary Duffing oscillator show that, the point sets in the Poincaré’s global cross-section will be highly compressed in one direction, and extend slowly along the deterministic period-doubling bifurcation trail in another direction when the strength of the harmonic excitation is fixed while the strength of the stochastic excitation is slowly increased. This kind of transition is called the noise-induced point-overspreading route to noisy chaos.

Abstract:In this paper, a mixing transformation f:M→M on a manifold M is proved to be sensitively dependent on the initial value of the iteration f and topologically transitive. Furthermore, a chaotic transformation f in the sense of Devaney with some assumption is proved to be an expanding map, which implies several statistical properties in this transformation map.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the relationship between a non-autonomous discrete dynamical system (NDDS) (H,f1,∞) and its induced set-valued discrete dynamical systems (K(H),f ̄1,∞). Specifically, it explores the chaotic properties of these systems. The main finding is that f1,∞ is Devaney chaotic if and only if f ̄1,∞ is Devaney chaotic in we-topology. The paper also provides similar conclusions for weak mixing, mixing, mild mixing, chain-transitivity, and chain-mixing in non-autonomous set-valued discrete dynamical systems (NSDDSs). Additionally, the paper proves that weak mixing implies sensitivity in NSDDSs.

Abstract:For spatiotemporal chaos described by partial differential equations, there are generally locations where the dynamical variable achieves its local extremum or where the time partial derivative of the variable vanishes instantaneously. To a large extent, the location and movement of these topologically special points determine the qualitative structure of the disordered states. We analyze numerically statistical properties of the topologically special points in one-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos. The probability distribution functions for the number of point, the lifespan, and the distance covered during their lifetime are obtained from numerical simulations. Mathematically, we establish a probabilistic model to describe the dynamics of these topologically special points. In spite of the different definitions in different spatiotemporal chaos, the dynamics of these special points can be described in a uniform approach.

Abstract:Real systems are often subject to both noise perturbations and impulsive effects. In this paper, we study the stability and stabilization of systems with both noise perturbations and impulsive effects. In other words, we generalize the impulsive control theory from the deterministic case to the stochastic case. The method is based on extending the comparison method to the stochastic case. The method presented in this paper is general and easy to apply. Theoretical results on both stability in the pth mean and stability with disturbance attenuation are derived. To show the effectiveness of the basic theory, we apply it to the impulsive control and synchronization of chaotic systems with noise perturbations, and to the stability of impulsive stochastic neural networks. Several numerical examples are also presented to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small average distance among the nodes. There are many natural and technological networks that present this kind of connections. The on-off intermittency is investigated in small-world networks of chaotic maps in this paper. We show how the small-world topology would affect the on-off intermittency behavior. The distributions of the laminar phase are calculated numerically. The results show that the laminar phases obey power-law distributions.

Abstract:Nonlinear time delay systems produce inherently delay-induced periodic oscillations, which are, however, too idealistic compared to observations. We exhibit a unified stochastic framework to systematically rectify such oscillations into oscillatory patterns with enriched temporal variabilities through generic, nonlinear responses to stochastic perturbations. Two paradigms of noise-driven chaos in high dimension are identified, fundamentally different from chaos triggered by parameter-space noise. Noteworthy is a low-dimensional stretch-and-fold mechanism, leading to stochastic strange attractors exhibiting horseshoe-like structures mirroring turbulent transport of passive tracers. The other is high-dimensional, with noise acting along the critical eigendirection and transmitted to "deeper" stable modes through nonlinearity, leading to stochastic attractors exhibiting swarm- like behaviors with power-law and scale break properties. The theory is applied to cloud delay models to parameterize missing physics such as intermittent rain and Lagrangian turbulent effects. The stochastically rectified model reproduces with fidelity complex temporal variabilities of open-cell oscillations exhibited by high-end cloud simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly focus on the set of non-dense points of a dynamical system. We study the distributional chaos in such set. As for a mixing expanding map or a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact connected manifold, we prove that DC1 chaos can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the intersection of the set of recurrent points and the set of the non-dense points. Also, for such dynamical systems, strongly distributional chaos (which is stronger than DC1 chaos) can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the set of non-recurrent points. Besides, when we divide the total space into six layers according to the different statistical structures, similar results can appear in every layer. Our results can also be applied to mixing subshifts of finite type, -shifts, homoclinic classes and diffeomorphisms preserving a weakly mixing hyperbolic ergodic measure.

Discrete-time Systems with Random Switches: from Systems Stability to Networks Synchronization.

Abstract:In this article, we develop some approaches, which enable us to more accurately and analytically identify the essential patterns that guarantee the almost sure stability of discrete-time systems with random switches. We allow for the case that the elements in the switching connection matrix even obey some unbounded and continuous-valued distributions. In addition to the almost sure stability, we further investigate the almost sure synchronization in complex dynamical networks consisting of randomly connected nodes. Numerical examples illustrate that a chaotic dynamics in the synchronization manifold is preserved when statistical parameters enter some almost sure synchronization region established by the developed approach. Moreover, some delicate configurations are considered on probability space for ensuring synchronization in networks whose nodes are described by nonlinear maps. Both theoretical and numerical results on synchronization are presented by setting only a few random connections in each switch duration. More interestingly, we analytically find it possible to achieve almost sure synchronization in the randomly switching complex networks even with very large population sizes, which cannot be easily realized in non-switching but deterministically connected networks.

Abstract:We consider a process $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$ in a fixed Wiener chaos $\mathcal{H}_n$. We establish some non-degenerate properties and related results for $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$. As an application, we show that solution to SDE driven by $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$ admits a density. Our approach relies on an interplay between Malliavin calculus and analysis on Wiener space.

Abstract:In the paper, in light of the LaSalle-type invariance principle for stochastic differential equations, chaos synchronization is investigated for a class of chaotic systems dissatisfying a globally Lipschitz condition with noise perturbation. Sufficient criteria for both complete synchronization and generalized synchronization are rigorously established and thus successfully applied to realize chaos synchronization in the coupled unified chaotic systems. Furthermore, concrete examples as well as their numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the possible application of the established criteria.

Abstract:We give a definition of chaos for a continuous self-map of a general topological space. This definition coincides with the Devanney definition for chaos when the topological space happens to be a metric space. We show that in a uniform Hausdorff space, there is a meaningful definition of sensitive dependence on initial conditions, and prove that if a map is chaotic on a such a space, then it necessarily has sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The proof is interesting in that it explains very clearly what causes a chaotic process to have sensitive dependence. Finally, we construct a chaotic map on a non-metrizable topological space.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to survey some recent progresses on control theory for stochastic distributed parameter systems, i.e., systems governed by stochastic differential equations in infinite dimensions, typically by stochastic partial differential equations. We will explain the new phenomenon and difficulties in the study of controllability and optimal control problems for one dimensional stochastic parabolic equations and stochastic hyperbolic equations. In particular, we shall see that both the formulation of corresponding stochastic control problems and the tools to solve them may differ considerably from their deterministic/finite-dimensional counterparts. More importantly, one has to develop new tools, say, the stochastic transposition method introduced in our previous works, to solve some problems in this field.

Uniform large deviations and metastability of random dynamical systems

Abstract:In this paper, we first provide a criterion on uniform large deviation principles (ULDP) of stochastic differential equations under Lyapunov conditions on the coefficients, which can be applied to stochastic systems with coefficients of polynomial growth and possible degenerate driving noises. In the second part, using the ULDP criterion we preclude the concentration of limiting measures of invariant measures of stochastic dynamical systems on repellers and acyclic saddle chains and extend Freidlin and Wentzell's asymptotics theorem to stochastic systems with unbounded coefficients. Of particular interest, we determine the limiting measures of the invariant measures of the famous stochastic van der Pol equation and van der Pol Duffing equation whose noises are naturally degenerate. We also construct two examples to match the global phase portraits of Freidlin and Wentzell's unperturbed systems and to explicitly compute their transition difficulty matrices. Other applications include stochastic May-Leonard system and random systems with infinitely many equivalent classes.

Abstract:In this paper,we mainly review the basic concepts in statistical mechanics of stochastic processes,including entropy production,flux,potential,equilibrium state,temperature in stochastic processes and their mathematical definitions.Moreover,we review some basic properties of the processes derived from these concepts,including fluctuation theorems,Green-Kubo formula,and the monotonicity of power spectrum density.Especially,we point out that we can introduce the temperature parameter in a Markov process to get the multi-layer clustering of the system modeled by the process.This multi-layer clustering shows the interaction network structure among the states.Finally,we give some examples of application problems,in which one can model by stochastic processes to get the answer,explanation,and understanding of concerned problems in natural sciences.
