Abstract:In the limit of large quantum excitations, the classical and quantum probability distributions for a Schr\"odinger equation can be compared by using the corresponding WKBJ solutions whose rapid oscillations are averaged. This result is extended for one-dimensional Hamiltonians with a non-usual kinetic part. The validity of the approach is tested with a Hamiltonian containing a relativistic kinetic energy operator.

Abstract:We introduce probability thermodynamics and probability quantum fields. By probability we mean that there is an unknown operator, physical or nonphysical, whose eigenvalues obey a certain statistical distribution. Eigenvalue spectra define spectral functions. Various thermodynamic quantities in thermodynamics and effective actions in quantum field theory are all spectral functions. In the scheme, eigenvalues obey a probability distribution, so a probability distribution determines a family of spectral functions in thermodynamics and quantum field theory. This leads to probability thermodynamics and probability quantum fields determined by a probability distribution. In constructing spectral functions, we encounter a problem. The conventional definition of spectral functions applies only to lower bounded spectra. In our scheme, however, there are two types of spectra: lower bounded spectra, corresponding to the probability distribution with nonnegative random variables, and the lower unbounded spectra, corresponding to probability distributions with negative random variables. To take the lower unbounded spectra into account, we generalize the definition of spectral functions by analytical continuation. In some cases, we encounter divergences. We remove the divergence by a renormalization procedure. Moreover, in virtue of spectral theory in physics, we generalize some concepts in probability theory. For example, the moment-generating function in probability theory does not always exist. We redefine the moment-generating function as the generalized heat kernel introduced in this paper, which makes the concept definable when the definition in probability theory fails. Thermodynamic quantities, vacuum amplitudes, one-loop effective actions, and vacuum energies for various probability distributions are presented.

Abstract:We solve for the $\rho$-meson's wave functions from a light-front QCD Hamiltonian determined for its constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, with a three-dimensional confinement using basis light-front quantization. From this, we obtain the leading-twist valence quark's parton distribution functions and transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions inside the $\rho$-meson. These results are qualitatively consistent with those of other models. We also demonstrate the important effects of a dynamical gluon on the $\rho$-meson's gluon densities, helicity, transversity, and tensor polarized distributions.

Abstract:It is shown how to write the Kirkwood-Rihaczec quasiprobability distribution as an expectation value of the vacuum state. We do this, by writing the position eigenstates as a "displacment" of the vacumm. We also give a relation between the Glauber-Sudarshan and Kirkwood-Rihaczec quasiprobability distributions.

Abstract:Probability theory can be modified in essentially one way while maintaining consistency with the basic Bayesian framework. This modification results in copies of standard probability theory for real, complex or quaternion probabilities. These copies, in turn, allow one to derive quantum theory while restoring standard probability theory in the classical limit. The argument leading to these three copies constrain physical theories in the same sense that Cox's original arguments constrain alternatives to standard probability theory. This sequence is presented in some detail with emphasis on questions beyond basic quantum theory where new insights are needed.

Generalized Parton Distribution Functions via Quantum Simulation of Quantum Field Theory in Light-front Coordinates

Abstract:Quantum simulation of quantum field theories offers a new way to investigate properties of the fundamental constituents of matter. We develop quantum simulation algorithms based on the light-front formulation of relativistic field theories. The process of quantizing the system in light-cone coordinates will be explained for a Hamiltonian formulation, which becomes block diagonal, each block approximating the Fock space with a certain harmonic resolution K. We analyze a QCD theory in 2+1D. We compute the analogue of parton distribution functions, the generalized parton distribution functions for mesonic composite particles, like hadrons, in these theories. The dependence of such analyses on the scaling of the number of qubits is compared with other schemes and conventional computations. There is a notable advantage to the light-front formulation.

Abstract:As is the case for all light coloured Standard Model particles, also photons and charged leptons appear as constituents in ultrarelativistic hadron beams, and admit a parton density function (PDF). It has been shown recently that the photon PDF can be given in terms of the structure functions and form factors for electron-proton scattering. The same holds for lepton PDFs. In the present work we set up a calculation of the lepton PDFs at next-to-leading order, using the same data input needed in the photon case. A precise knowledge of the lepton densities allows us to study lepton-initiated processes even at a hadron collider, with all possible combinations of same-charge, opposite-charge, same-flavour, different-flavour leptons and leptons-quarks, most of which cannot be realized in any other foreseeable experiment. The lepton densities in the proton are extremely small, so that their contribution to Standard Model processes is generally shadowed by processes initiated by coloured partons. We will show, however, that there are cases where these processes can be relevant, giving rise to rare Standard Model signatures and to new production channels, that can enlarge the discovery potential of New Physics at the LHC and future high energy colliders with hadrons in the initial state.

Closed-form expressions for the probability distribution of quantum walk on a line

Abstract:Theoretical and applied studies of quantum walks are abundant in quantum science and technology thanks to their relative simplicity and versatility. Here we derive closed-form expressions for the probability distribution of quantum walks on a line. The most general two-state coin operator and the most general (pure) initial state are considered in the derivation. The general coin operator includes the common choices of Hadamard, Grover, and Fourier coins. The method of Fibonacci-Horner basis for the power decomposition of a matrix is employed in the analysis. Moreover, we also consider mixed initial states and derive closed-form expression for the probability distribution of the Quantum walk on a line. To prove the accuracy of our derivations, we retrieve the simulated probability distribution of Hadamard walk on a line using our closed-form expressions. With a broader perspective in mind, we argue that our approach has the potential to serve as a helpful mathematical tool in obtaining precise analytical expressions for the time evolution of qubit-based systems in a general context.

Abstract:A distribution of electromagnetic fields presents a statistical assembly of a particular type, which is at scale h a quantum statistical assembly itself and has also been instrumental to concretisation of the basic probability assumption of quantum mechanics. Of specific concern in this discussion is an extensive train of radiation fields, of a total wave function \psi, which are continuously (re)emitted and (re)absorbed by an oscillatory (point) charge of a zero rest mass and yet a finite dynamical mass, with the waves and charge together making up an extensive undulatory IED particle. The IED particle will as any real particle be subject to interactions with the environmental fields and particles, hence to excitations, and therefore will explore all possible states over time; at scale $h$ the states are discrete. On the basis of the principles of statistics and statistical mechanics combined with first principles solutions for the IED particle, we derive for the IED particle the probability functions in position space, of a form |\psi|^2, and in dynamical-variable space.

Abstract:In this work, I derive the time-dependent probability density function of classical observables using the Hamiltonian mechanics approach, extending the notion of fluctuation theorems for any observables. In particular, the time-dependent probability density function of the thermodynamic work evolving in the switching time is solved as a special case. From such a relation, I prove Jarzynski's equality and Crook's fluctuation theorem. The particular case of a Gaussian distribution for slowly-varying processes is derived as well at the end.

Abstract:Based on the gauge-invariant Wigner operator in [A \ representation (see Ref. 10), where the state \ lambda] can conveniently describe the motion of an electron in a uniform magnetic field, we provide an approach for identifying the corresponding state vector for Laughlin wave function and deriving the Wigner function (quasi-probability distribution) for the Laughlin state vector. Abstract:It is shown that if we can define a physical quantity with proper character in a given inertial reference frame (kinematic, dynamic, electromagnetic in its nature) which transforms when detected from a reference frame relative to which it moves with velocity $u_x$ as $F=\f{F^o}{\sqrt{1-\f{u_x^2}{c^2}}}$ then we can derive for it transformation equations following one and the same procedure, which involves the addition law of relativistic velocities which can be derived without using the Lorentz transformations. The transformation equation derived that way, generates the physical quantities $u_xF$ and $u_x'F'$, for which physicists invent names reflecting theirs physical meaning.

From classical probability densities to quantum states: quantization of Gaussians for arbitrary orderings

Abstract:The primary focus of this work is to investigate how the most emblematic classical probability density, namely a Gaussian, can be mapped to a valid quantum states. To explore this issue, we consider a Gaussian whose squared variance depends on a parameter $\lambda$. Specifically, depending on the value of $\lambda$, we study what happens in the classical-quantum correspondence as we change the indeterminacy of the classical particle. Furthermore, finding a correspondence between a classical state and a quantum state is not a trivial task. Quantum observables, described by Hermitian operators, do not generally commute, so a precise ordering must be introduced to resolve this ambiguity. In this work, we study two different arbitrary orderings: the first is an arbitrary ordering of the position and momentum observables; the second, which is the main focus of the present work, is an arbitrary ordering of the annihilation and creation operators. In this latter case, we find the interesting result that even a $\delta$-function, which in general has no quantum correspondence, can be mapped into a valid quantum state for a particular ordering, specifically the antinormal one (all creation operators are to the right of all annihilation operators in the product). This means that the Gaussian probability density corresponds to a valid quantum state, regardless of how localized classical particles are in phase space.

Quantum return probability of a system of $N$ non-interacting lattice fermions

Abstract:We consider $N$ non-interacting fermions performing continuous-time quantum walks on a one-dimensional lattice. The system is launched from a most compact configuration where the fermions occupy neighboring sites. We calculate exactly the quantum return probability (sometimes referred to as the Loschmidt echo) of observing the very same compact state at a later time $t$. Remarkably, this probability depends on the parity of the fermion number -- it decays as a power of time for even $N$, while for odd $N$ it exhibits periodic oscillations modulated by a decaying power law. The exponent also slightly depends on the parity of $N$, and is roughly twice smaller than what it would be in the continuum limit. We also consider the same problem, and obtain similar results, in the presence of an impenetrable wall at the origin constraining the particles to remain on the positive half-line. We derive closed-form expressions for the amplitudes of the power-law decay of the return probability in all cases. The key point in the derivation is the use of Mehta integrals, which are limiting cases of the Selberg integral.

Quantum Transition Probabilities

Abstract:Transition probabilities are an important and useful tool in quantum mechanics. However, in their present form, they are limited in scope and only apply to pure quantum states. In this article we extend their applicability to mixed states and to transitions between quantum effects. We also present their dependence on a measured operation or instrument. We begin by defining our concepts on a general quantum effect algebra. These concepts are illustrated using Holevo operations and instruments. We then present transition probabilities in the special case of the Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics. We show that for pure states and particular types of operations the transition probabilities reduce to their usual form. We give examples in terms of Lüders operations and instruments.

Abstract:Physics is based on probabilities as fundamental entities of a mathematical description. Expectation values of observables are computed according to the classical statistical rule. The overall probability distribution for one world covers all times. The quantum formalism arises once one focuses on the transport of the time-local probabilistic information from one hypersurface to a neighboring one. Wave functions or the density matrix allow the formulation of a general linear evolution law for classical statistics. The density matrix for classical statistics is a powerful tool which allows us to implement for generalized Ising models concepts as basis transformations, the momentum observable and the associated Fourier representation, or the definition of subsystems by subtraces of the density matrix. The association of operators to observables permits the computation of expectation values in terms of the density matrix by the usual quantum rule. We show that probabilistic cellular automata are quantum systems in a formulation with discrete time steps and real wave functions. The evolution operator for automata can be expressed in terms of fermionic creation and annihilation operators. The time-local probabilistic information amounts to a subsystem of the overall probabilistic system which is correlated with its environment consisting of the past and future. Such subsystems typically involve probabilistic observables for which only a probability distribution for their possible measurement values is available. Incomplete statistics does not permit to compute classical correlation functions for arbitrary subsystem-observables since different overall observables are mapped to the same subsystem observable. Bell's inequalities are not generally applicable.

Quantum Probability via the Method of Arbitrary Functions

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to apply the collection of mathematical tools known as the "method of arbitrary functions" to analyze how probability arises from quantum dynamics. We argue that in a toy model of quantum measurement the Born rule probabilities can be derived from the unitary Schrödinger dynamics when certain dynamical parameters are treated as themselves random variables with initial probability distributions. Specifically, we study the perturbed double well model, in which the perturbation is treated as a random variable, and we show that for arbitrary initial distributions within a certain class, the dynamics yields the Born rule probabilities in the joint limits given by long times and small values of Planck's constant (the classical limit). Our results establish the Born rule as a type of universal limiting behavior that is independent of the precise initial dynamical parameters.
