Abstract:The main methodological parameters and the modes of investigation of samples containing micro- and nano-sized reagent phases are determined. Using scanning laser microscopy and an original method for analyzing the surface relief, a quantitative assessment of the adsorption layer of the collector reagent on Au-sulfide minerals was performed, the proportion of the molecular form of adsorption and the retention agent fixing strength was calculated. The theoretical basis for choosing the reagent mode for selective flotation of multicomponent ores was developed. The action mechanism has been revealed and the prospect of using novel selective collectors and environmentally friendly plant reagents for extracting non-ferrous and noble metals from complex sulfide ores has been substantiated.

Abstract:Metallic materials play a vital role in the economic life of modern societies; hence, research contributions are sought on fresh developments that enhance our understanding of the fundamental aspects of the relationships between processing, properties, and microstructures. Disciplines in the metallurgical field ranging from processing, mechanical behavior, phase transitions, microstructural evolution, and nanostructures, as well as unique metallic properties, inspire general and scholarly interest among the scientific community. Three of the most important elements are included in unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy: (1) hydrometallurgy (leaching under atmospheric and high-pressure conditions, mixing of a solution with a gas and mechanical parts, neutralization of a solution, precipitation and cementation of metals from a solution aiming at purification, and compound productions during crystallization), (2) pyrometallurgy (roasting, smelting, and refining), and (3) electrometallurgy (aqueous electrolysis and molten salt electrolysis). Advances in our understanding of unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy are required to develop new research strategies for the treatment of primary and secondary materials and their application in industry.

Abstract:Hydrometallurgical gold recovery processes play a pivotal role in the gold mining industry, contributing to more than 90% of global gold production. Among the array of techniques available, the Merrill–Crowe process, adsorption, ion exchange, and solvent extraction are central in extracting gold from leach solutions. While the Merrill–Crowe process and gold complex adsorption onto activated carbon represent historical cornerstones, their inherent limitations have prompted the emergence of more recent innovations in ion exchange and solvent extraction, offering enhanced selectivity, control, and sustainability. The evolution of modern organic chemistry has significantly influenced the progress of ion exchange technology, mainly through the introduction of advanced polymer matrix synthetic resins. At the same time, novel solvents tailored to gold complex interactions have revitalized ion exchange and solvent extraction. Introducing ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents has also added a new dimension to efforts to improve gold extraction metallurgy. This paper reviews these cutting-edge developments and their potential to revolutionize the hydrometallurgical gold recovery process, addressing the pressing need for improved efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Abstract:As non-renewable natural resources, minerals are essential in a broad range of biological and technological applications. The surface interactions of mineral particles with other objects (e.g., solids, bubbles, reagents) in aqueous suspensions play a critical role in mediating many interfacial phenomena involved in mineral flotation. In this work, we have reviewed the fundamentals of surface forces and quantitative surface property-force relationship of minerals, and the advances in the quantitative measurements of interaction forces of mineral-mineral, bubble-mineral and mineral-reagent using nanomechanical tools such as surface forces apparatus (SFA) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The quantitative correlation between surface properties of minerals at the solid/water interface and their surface interaction mechanisms with other objects in complex aqueous media at the nanoscale has been established. The existing challenges in mineral flotation such as characterization of anisotropic crystal plane or heterogeneous surface, low recovery of fine particle flotation, and in-situ electrochemical characterization of collectorless flotation as well as the future work to resolve the challenges based on the understanding and modulation of surface forces of minerals have also been discussed. This review provides useful insights into the fundamental understanding of the intermolecular and surface interaction mechanisms involved in mineral processing, with implications for precisely modulating related interfacial interactions towards the development of highly efficient industrial processes and chemical additives.
