Abstract:Dipoles are widely involved in π-π interactions and are central to many chemical and biological functions, but their influence on the strength of π-π interactions remains unclear. Here, we report a study of π-π interaction between azulene-based, polar single molecules and between naphthalene-based, nonpolar single molecules. By performing scanning tunneling microscopy break junction measurements of single-molecule conductance, we show that the π-stacked dimers formed by the azulene-based, polar aromatic structures feature higher electrical conductivity and mechanical stability than those formed by the naphthalene-based, nonpolar molecules. Mechanical control of π-π interactions in both rotational and translational motion reveals a sensitive dependence of the stacking strength on relative alignment between the dipoles. The antiparallel alignment of the dipoles was found to be the optimal stacking configuration that underpins the observed enhancement of π-π stacking between azulene-based single molecules. Density functional theory calculations further explained the observed enhancement of stacking strength and the corresponding charge transport efficiency. Our experimental and theoretical results show that the antiparallel alignment of the dipole moments significantly enhances the electronic coupling and mechanical stability of π-π stacking. In addition, in the formation of single-molecule junctions, the azulene group was experimentally and theoretically proved to form a Au-π contact with electrodes with high charge transport efficiency. This paper provides evidence and interpretation of the role of dipoles in π-π interactions at the single-molecule level and offers new insights into potential applications in supramolecular devices.

Abstract:By taking advantage of large changes in geometric and electronic structure during the reversible trans – cis isomerisation, azobenzene derivatives have been widely studied for potential applications in information processing and digital storage devices. Here we report an unusual discovery of unambiguous conductance switching upon light and electric field-induced isomerisation of azobenzene in a robust single-molecule electronic device for the first time. Both experimental and theoretical data consistently demonstrate that the azobenzene sidegroup serves as a viable chemical gate controlled by electric field, which efficiently modulates the energy difference of trans and cis forms as well as the energy barrier of isomerisation. In conjunction with photoinduced switching at low biases, these results afford a chemically-gateable, fully-reversible, two-mode, single-molecule transistor, offering a fresh perspective for creating future multifunctional single-molecule optoelectronic devices in a practical way.

Abstract:The PNP structure realized by energy band engineering is widely used in various electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this work, we succeed in constructing a PNP-type single-molecule junction and explore the intrinsic characteristics of the PNP structure at the single-molecule level. A back-to-back azulene molecule is designed with opposite ∼1.7 D dipole moments to create PNP-type single-molecule junctions. In combination with theoretical and experimental studies, it is found that the intrinsic dipole can effectively adjust single-molecule charge transport and the corresponding potential barriers. This energy band control and charge transport regulation at the single-molecule level improve deep understanding of molecular charge transport mechanisms and provide important insights into the development of high-performance functional molecular nanocircuits toward practical applications.
Gating Quantum Interference Effect in Single-Molecule Junctions

Abstract:The quantum interference (QI) effect plays a significant role in molecular electronics since offers an effective method to manipulate the charge transport through single-molecule junctions. However, tuning the QI effect in single-molecule junctions faces a formidable challenge due to the absence of technical approaches and limited theory. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, that electrostatic gating can be a great candidate for the control of QI, thus manipulating the electron transport properties, due to the capability of the molecular orbitals shifting under the gating effect. Our calculations suggest that a switch between constructive and destructive QI effects can be realized as a result of the gating effect. The gated transition from constructive QI to destructive QI can lead to a dramatic conductance variation over one order of magnitude in anthracene-based molecular junctions. This control of the QI effect using electrostatic gating paves the way for the next generation of QI-based field-effect transistors.

Abstract:Molecule-electrode interactions are critical for determining transport mechanisms and device functionalities in both single-molecule electrochemistry and electronics. Crucial factors such as anchoring groups and local fields have been studied, but the role of electrolytes and interfacial charge distribution remains largely underexplored. The present research focuses on how the interfacial charge distribution in the electric double layer (EDL) controls single-molecule junctions anchored by azulene. This probe molecule is chosen for its distinct charge properties in its 5- and 7-membered condensed ring structures that impose unique sensitivity to the surrounding electric field. Using scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) techniques, we systematically investigate the conductance, anchoring sites, and coupling strength of these junctions in organic liquid but non-electrolytic environments, in aqueous solution under varying ionic strengths, and across different electrode systems and potential profiles. Our results demonstrate that the conductance and molecule-electrode coupling modes can be effectively tuned through control of interfacial charge distribution, particularly by altering ion distribution around the electrodes. Mechanical modulation experiments substantiate these trends, and theoretical calculations pinpoint ion distribution as a key driver of molecule-electrode interaction. This research introduces a novel approach to dynamic control of the azulene-electrode coupling through electrolyte manipulation, offering entirely new insight for the design of electrolyte-responsive, switchable single-molecule devices.

Abstract:The protonation of azulene derivatives with quantum interference effects is studied by the conductance measurements of single-molecule junctions. Three azulene derivatives with different connectivities are synthesized and reacted with trifluoroacetic acid to form the protonated states. It is found that the protonated azulene molecular junctions produce more than one order of magnitude higher conductance than the neutral states, while the molecules with destructive interference show more significant changes. These experimental observations are supported by our recently-developed parameter free theory of connectivity, which suggests that the largest conductance change occurs when destructive interference near the Fermi energy in the neutral state is alleviated by protonation.

Abstract:AbstractAchieving gate control with atomic precision, which is crucial to the transistor performance on the smallest scale, remains a challenge. Herein we report a new class of aromatic‐ring molecular nanotransistors based on graphene–molecule–graphene single‐molecule junctions by using an ionic‐liquid gate. Experimental phenomena and theoretical calculations confirm that this ionic‐liquid gate can effectively modulate the alignment between molecular frontier orbitals and the Fermi energy level of graphene electrodes, thus tuning the charge‐transport properties of the junctions. In addition, with a small gate voltage (|VG|≤1.5 V) ambipolar charge transport in electrochemically inactive molecular systems (EG>3.5 eV) is realized. These results offer a useful way to build high‐performance single‐molecule transistors, thus promoting the prospects for molecularly engineered electronic devices.

Abstract:Biphenyl, as the elementary unit of organic functional materials, has been widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, over decades little has been fundamentally understood regarding how the intramolecular conformation of biphenyl dynamically affects its transport properties at the single-molecule level. Here, we establish the stereoelectronic effect of biphenyl on its electrical conductance based on the platform of graphene-molecule single-molecule junctions, where a specifically designed hexaphenyl aromatic chain molecule is covalently sandwiched between nanogapped graphene point contacts to create stable single-molecule junctions. Both theoretical and temperature-dependent experimental results consistently demonstrate that phenyl twisting in the aromatic chain molecule produces different microstates with different degrees of conjugation, thus leading to stochastic switching between high- and low-conductance states. These investigations offer new molecular design insights into building functional single-molecule electrical devices.

Abstract:Recently, we presented a prototypical three-terminal device, in which the current through a hybrid-molecular diode, whose current voltage characteristic is determined by a single molecule in the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope, is modified by nanometer-sized charge transfer complexes covalently linked to the molecule in the gap [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 188303]. Since the complexes are formed by electron acceptors covalently bound to the molecule in the gap, and electron donors coming from the ambient fluid, this set-up represents a chemical-field-effect transistor based on a single molecule with a nanometer-sized gate. The gating effect was explained by an interface dipole model. Here, we present first tests of this model addressing the orientation of the electrical dipoles. By using amino- and carboxylic acid functionalized molecules in the hybrid-molecular diode we study the effect of dipoles being perpendicular, instead of parallel, to the transistor channel direction and find agreement with the model.

Abstract:To realize single‐molecule field‐effect transistors, a crucial test for evaluating the integrity of single‐molecule electronics into conventional circuit architectures, remains elusive. Though interfacial effect is widely accepted to be crucially important in electronic devices, rare reports have studied fine control of the interface in single‐molecule transistors. Through molecular engineering, different numbers of methylene groups are incorporated between the diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) kernel and anchor groups (AMn‐DPP, n = 0−3), and how the molecule–electrode interface affects the performance of single‐molecule transistors is investigated. Both experimental and theoretical data demonstrate that p‐type charge transport dominates in AM0‐DPP and AM1‐DPP single‐molecule transistors, while AM2‐DPP and AM3‐DPP systems exhibit ambipolar field‐effect behaviors, which is attributed to the HOMO‐pinning effect in AM0‐DPP and AM1‐DPP molecular junctions. Theoretical calculations show that the parity of the methylene number results in two different connection symmetries between the DPP kernel and graphene electrodes, and thus different electronic interactions, leading to different relative molecular energy‐level alignments form those of isolated molecules, which has never been reported before. These results provide crucial information for precise control of the interfaces in molecular junctions, new insight into building multifunctional graphene–organic hybrid electronic devices, and the design of functional organic materials.

Abstract:Exploring the polarity change of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on organic semiconductors through the molecular orbital distribution is a challenging work. In this study, we present two dithienocoronene diimide (DTCDI)-derived isomeric triads end-capped with azulene (DTCDI-B2Az and DTCDI-B6Az), which were designed and synthesized by connecting two azulene units at 2-position of five-membered ring (DTCDI-B2Az) or 6-position of seven-membered ring (DTCDI-B6Az) to the π-conjugated electron-deficient DTCDI-core, respectively. The two isomeric triads show different molecular structure, electronic structure, optical and electrochemical properties. DTCDI-B2Az features the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels (−3.81 eV) and the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) energy levels (−5.80 eV), and meanwhile the LUMO/HOMO orbital distributing over the whole molecule, which facilitates electron/hole injection and transport under ambient conditions. However, DTCDI-B6Az possesses a LUMO/HOMO energy levels (−4.20/−6.02 eV) and its HOMO orbital is localized on two end-capping azulene units that can decrease the electron transfer barrier for more effective electron injection, and simultaneously suppress the hole injection and transfer. The OFET devices based on the two triads were fabricated by solution-processed method using bottom-gate top-contact (BGTC) device structure. For DTCDI-B2Az, air-stable ambipolar transport characteristics were achieved with the highest hole/electron mobilities of 5.40 × 10−4 and 1.83 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. However, for DTCDI-B6Az, air-stable unipolar n-type performances were obtained with the highest electron mobility of 1.56 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1. Overall, this study demonstrates the polarity of OFETs was changed with the DTCDI-derived triads constructed by changing the connection position of the end-capped azulene group to the π-conjugated electron-deficient DTCDI-core.

Abstract:We have fabricated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) field effect transistors (FETs) with molybdenum source and drain contacts. Normally, these devices operate only as p-channel transistors, however, after polystyrene latex nanospheres were attached to the nanotubes close to the contacts, they changed to ambipolar operation. This strategy provides a simple method to modify the electrical behavior of unipolar SWNT-FETs by influencing the gate-channel electric field distribution and offset charge, so enabling complementary circuits to be fabricated.

Abstract:Electrochemical gating at the single molecule level of viologen molecular bridges in ionic liquids is examined. Contrary to previous data recorded in aqueous electrolytes, a clear and sharp peak in the single molecule conductance versus electrochemical potential data is obtained in ionic liquids. These data are rationalized in terms of a two-step electrochemical model for charge transport across the redox bridge. In this model the gate coupling in the ionic liquid is found to be fully effective with a modeled gate coupling parameter, zeta, of unity. This compares to a much lower gate coupling parameter of 0.2 for the equivalent aqueous gating system. This study shows that ionic liquids are far more effective media for gating the conductance of single molecules than either state three-terminal platforms created using nanolithography or aqueous media.

Abstract:Controlling charge transport through a single molecule connected to metallic electrodes remains one of the most fundamental challenges of nanoelectronics. Here we use electrochemical gating to reversibly tune the conductance of two different organic molecules, both containing anthraquinone (AQ) centers, over >1 order of magnitude. For electrode potentials outside the redox-active region, the effect of the gate is simply to shift the molecular energy levels relative to the metal Fermi level. At the redox potential, the conductance changes abruptly as the AQ unit is oxidized/reduced with an accompanying change in the conjugation pattern between linear and cross conjugation. The most significant change in conductance is observed when the electron pathway connecting the two electrodes is via the AQ unit. This is consistent with the expected occurrence of destructive quantum interference in that case. The experimental results are supported by an excellent agreement with ab initio transport calculations.

Abstract:Charge transport is studied in single-molecule junctions formed with a 1,7-pyrrolidine-substituted 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) molecular block using an electrochemical gate. Compared to an unsubstituted-PTCDI block, spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements indicate a reduction in the highest occupied (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied (LUMO) molecular orbital energy gap associated with the electron donor character of the substituents. The small HOMO-LUMO energy gap allows for switching between electron- and hole-dominated charge transports as a function of gate voltage, thus demonstrating a single-molecule ambipolar field-effect transistor. Both the unsubstituted and substituted molecules display similar n-type behaviors, indicating that they share the same n-type conduction mechanism. However, the substituted-PTCDI block shows a peak in the source-drain current vs gate voltage characteristics for the p-type transport, which is attributed to a two-step incoherent transport via the HOMO of the molecule.

Abstract:We investigate from first principles the change in transport properties of a two-dimensional azobenzene monolayer sandwiched between two Au electrodes that undergoes molecular switching. We focus on transport differences between a chemisorbed and physisorbed top monolayer-electrode contact. The conductance of the monolayer junction with a chemisorbed top contact is higher in the trans configuration, in agreement with the previous theoretical predictions of one-dimensional single-molecule junctions. However, with a physisorbed top contact, the ON state, with larger conductance, is associated with the cis configuration due to a reduced effective tunneling pathway, which successfully explains recent experimental measurements on azobenzene monolayer junctions. A simple model is developed to explain electron transmission across subsystems in the molecular junction. We also discuss the effects of monolayer packing density, molecule tilt angle, and contact geometry on the calculated transmission functions. In particular, we find that a tip-like contact with chemisorption significantly affects the electric current through the cis monolayer, leading to highly asymmetric current-voltage characteristics as well as large negative differential resistance behavior.
