The rubidium (Rb) isotope system has the potential to trace planetary evolution, magmatic‐fluid interaction and chemical weathering. These applications are based on Rb isotope measurement results with precisions fit for purpose, but measurements of low‐Rb geological materials are challenging due to large sample consumption and overload of ion‐exchange resin. Here we developed a measurement procedure for Rb isotope data (δ87RbSRM984) of low‐Rb geological materials using MC‐ICP‐MS. Using an Aridus III desolvator and Ni standard sampler + Ni X skimmer cone combination, the Rb loading amount was reduced significantly to 20 ng. A comparison between two methods for instrumental mass‐bias correction, the sample‐standard bracketing and combined sample‐standard bracketing and internal (Zr) normalisation (C‐SSBIN), shows that C‐SSBIN could produce Rb isotope data with better intermediate measurement precisions but strictly restricted to optimal Zr/Rb ratio. The robustness of this method was demonstrated by monitoring δ87RbSRM984 data of two in‐house Rb isotope standards, replicates, some reference materials with δ87RbSRM984 values previously reported, and element‐doped and matrix‐spiked synthetic solutions. Based on repeated measurements of Rb isotope standards and reference materials, the long‐term (over one year) intermediate precision was better than 0.05‰ (2s, standard deviations). We additionally recommend thirteen reliable reference materials for future Rb isotope ratio measurements.

Rubidium purification via a single chemical column and its isotope measurement on geological standard materials by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:A chromatographic procedure for Rb, K, Ba and Sr one-by-one separation from geological materials has been developed by using a single column with packing Sr-spec resin, followed by high-precision Rb isotope measurement by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The main matrix elements (Ti, Al, Mg, Fe, Mn, Na and Ca) were removed with 4.4 mL of 3 M HNO3 first; Rb and K were then sequentially eluted in different volumes with the same acid. After that, Ba was eluted with 8 M HNO3, and finally Sr was eluted with Milli-Q water. This procedure enables us to collect pure Rb, K, Ba and Sr one by one in a single column with recovery close to 100%. The purified Rb was measured by using a standard-sample bracketing method via MC-ICP-MS. The short-term precision for delta Rb-87 was better than +/-0.03 parts per thousand (2SD, for 15 hours), and the long-term (more than 12 months) external precision was better than +/-0.06 parts per thousand (2SD) based on repeated analysis of Rb standard solution NIST SRM 984. Matrix effects on Rb isotope measurement by MC-ICP-MS were tested by doping pure Rb standard with various amounts of matrix elements and were found to be insignificant when Na/Rb < 2, Ca/Rb < 4 and K/Rb < 25. We measured a set of geological reference standards by this method and found significant Rb isotopic variation. Our study suggests that Rb isotope geochemistry may be a promising tracer of various cosmochemical and geological processes.

Abstract:Analytical method using double-spike and MC-ICP-MS can provide high efficiency of measurement for stable Sr isotopic compositions (δ88/86Sr). Here we report a method for high precision measurement of δ88/86Sr using MC-ICP-MS. A84Sr–87Sr double-spike was used to correct instrumental mass bias of stable Sr isotopes. Strontium was purified by a cation exchange resin (AG50W-X12, 200–400 mesh), and for samples with high Er, Yb, Lu, and Hf contents, an additional chromatographic purification procedure was applied. The potential effects of doubly charged ion isobaric inferences and different measurement conditions were rigorously evaluated to improve the analytical precision. Data quality was monitored by measuring three USGS reference materials (BHVO-2, AGV-2, and G-2) and two in-house reference materials, giving the long-term precision of 0.03‰ (2SD) for δ88/86Sr. Twenty reference materials, including nine igneous rocks, four sedimentary rocks, two sediments, and five soils, have δ88/86Sr values range from −0.06‰ to 0.35‰, showing resolvable isotope fractionation during magmatic and supergene processes. This study provides a useful standard dataset for inter-laboratory comparison of stable Sr isotope studies.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the analytical precision of potassium（K） isotopes has been greatly improved, which in turn has promoted their development as potential geochemical tracers in processes involving continental weathering, crust-mantle interaction, and so on. Until now, the cumbersome and time-consuming process of sample pretreatments and the poor analytical accuracy caused by argon hydrides interference are still the biggest obstacles to the wide application of K isotopes. After completely dissolving the samples with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, purification of K from major matrix was performed on a customized quartz ion exchange column packed with ～2.7 mL of AG50W-X8 cation exchange resin（BioRad TM,200～400 mesh） using 0.5 mol/L HNO 3 as the eluent. This one-step procedure can effectively separate K from Li, Na, Ti, Mg, Mn, Al and Ca, except for Cr, in most of the geological samples. To find the appropriate method for high-precision stable K isotopic measurements, for minimizing the ArH + yield and improving the stability of the instrument, three methods were compared here（the high-resolution mode, high-resolution mode with continuous acquisition measurement run mode, and the low-resolution mode with a method designed to eliminate ArH + interference）. The low-resolution mode has the advantages of low cost, high stability, and high precision（long-term precision at about 0.08‰ for our laboratory）. When used to measure the K isotopic composition of a series of international geological reference materials, the results are consistent with previous values within analytical precision, indicating the reliability of this method. The K isotopic composition of a set of Chinese national rock standard materials is determined here. The measured values of K isotopes can provide a reference for the data comparison between different laboratories in future.
High-precision barium isotope measurements by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:We present a high precision method to measure Ba isotopes by multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Barium is separated from matrices by using a cation exchange resin (AG50W-X12, 200-400 mesh). Instrumental mass bias of Ba isotopes was corrected by a sample-standard bracketing method using SRM3104a as the bracketing standard. Potential effects of different matrices from resin and samples, and acid molarity and concentration mismatch were rigorously evaluated in this study. The precision and accuracy of this method were tested by the measurement of a synthetic solution made by mixing SRM3104a Ba with other matrix elements. The average delta Ba-137/134 of the synthetic solution is -0.005 +/- 0.047 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 36) relative to SRM3104a. The robustness of this method was further assessed by replicated analyses of 8 reference materials, including igneous rocks with mafic to felsic compositions. The delta Ba-137/134 of basalt standards BCR-2, BHVO-2, and JB-2 is 0.050 +/- 0.039 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 13), 0.047 +/- 0.028 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 22), and 0.085 +/- 0.035 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 19), respectively; diabase standard W-2 is 0.035 +/- 0.022 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 11); andesite standard AGV-1 is 0.047 +/- 0.040 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 11) and JA-2 is 0.038 +/- 0.048 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 17); rhyolite standard RGM-1 is 0.142 +/- 0.030 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 15); and granodiorite standard GSP-2 is 0.013 +/- 0.046 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 15). Two late Mesozoic basalts from China have a delta Ba-137/134 of 0.132 +/- 0.020 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 7) and 0.001 +/- 0.034 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 7), respectively. Based on repeated analyses of the synthetic standard and a carbonate standard IAEA-CO-9, the long-term external precision of our method is better than +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, much smaller than the variation of delta Ba-137/134 in these reference standards and samples (up to 0.27 parts per thousand). Therefore, the Ba isotopic composition can be used as a novel tracer to study geochemical processes.

Abstract:The high precision measurement of isotopic ratios for micro-geological samples has become very important in the geological and environmental sciences. Recently developed solid-source thermal ionization mass spectrometers are highly precise and sensitive, and are playing a crucial role in isotopic geochronology and geochemistry. This paper reports analytical data obtained from standard material solutions using an IsoProbe-T mass spectrometer. Measurements on the Sr standard material NBS987 and Nd standard material Ames yielded mean 87Sr/ 86Sr and 143Nd/ 144Nd ratio values of 0.7102418± 0.0000051 and 0.5121484±0.0000029, respectively, with an internal precision better than 0.0003%. Measurements using a small amount of the Sr standard material solution NBS987 (0.3-1ng) yielded an internal precision significantly better than 0.003%. Combining chemical separation procedures having low blank, measurements of micro-geological samples have successively been achieved. This combination of low-blank chemical procedures and the use of a high precision mass spectrometer will potently promote applications of single-grain geochronology and isotopic tracer on magmatic rocks, metamorphic rocks, ore deposits and tectonites.
Improved in-situ Determination of Sr Isotope Ratio in Silicate Samples Using LA-MC-ICP-MS and Its Wider Application for Fused Rock Powder

Abstract:The in-situ Sr isotope determination of solid samples has the advantages of high spatial resolution and convenient and rapid sample preparation. However, due to the lack of column chemistry separation of matrix elements from Sr, the interference correction (especially the isobaric interference from 87 Rb on 87 Sr) becomes a big issue for high precise in-situ Sr isotope analytical results. In this study, we evaluated the influence of isobaric interference systematically and adopted an improved strategy for isobaric interference correction of Rb. Specifically, as an external standard for data calibration, an in-house silicate standard (Rb-std) was fused from pure oxide powders. The new standard (Rb-std) shows very low contents of Sr (<1 ppm), Yb (<0.09 ppm) and Er (<0.05 ppm), which directly avoid the trouble of interference of doubly charged ions and isobar, when we determinate the mass fractionation factors of Rb ( β Rb ). Our improved method can provide more accurate data than previous researches, in which the mass fractionation were calculated from an external reference material StHs6/80-G with high Rb (30.07 ppm), Sr (482 ppm), Yb (1.13 ppm) and Er (1.18 ppm). Then, these β Rb from Rb-std were applied by linear interpolation to the unknown samples for correction of 87 Rb on 87 Sr. The analytical results of serial international reference materials (BIR-1G, BCR-2G, BHVO-2G, T1-G and ATHO-G) demonstrate that our improved method can raise the upper limit of Rb/Sr for in-situ Sr isotope determination and reduce the relative standard deviation of results. This improvement of the upper limit of Rb/Sr (<0.33) will expand not only range of microanalysis for silicate minerals, but also bulk Sr isotope determination of volcanic rock combining with rapid fusion technique.
High-precision Mg isotope analyses of low-Mg rocks by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:We present a method for precise measurement of Mg isotope ratios for low-Mg rock samples (where MgO <1wt.%) by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The efficiency of Mg purification is significantly improved by using a newly calibrated HNO3+HF step to remove undesired matrix elements (such as Ti, Al, Fe, and K) in low-Mg samples. We also establish that increasing the amount of Mg loaded to the chromatographic column minimized blank effects of organics leached from cation resin. All parameters that could affect the accuracy and precision of Mg isotope analyses were rigorously examined by two independent laboratories in Beijing and Hefei. The δ26Mg of mono-elemental Mg standard CAM-1 measured in the two laboratories were −2.597±0.042‰ (2σ, n=49) and −2.598±0.039‰ (2σ, n=79), respectively; in house standard IGGMg1 were −1.742±0.041‰ (2σ, n=53) and −1.749±0.049‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively. The average δ26Mg over ten months of two synthetic standards, made by doping IGGMg1 and IGGMg2 with matrix elements, agrees well with their recommended values, within error. The robustness of our method was further assessed by replicated analyses of sixteen rock standards with MgO contents from 0.28wt.% to 49.4wt.%. The δ26Mg of USGS rhyolite standards RGM-1 and RGM-2 are −0.188±0.031‰ (2σ, n=35) and −0.182±0.041‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively; granite standard GA is −0.165±0.038‰ (2σ, n=57), G-2 is −0.129±0.045‰ (2σ, n=34), GS-N is −0.204±0.059‰ (2σ, n=33), GSP-2 is 0.042±0.020‰ (2σ, n=15), and GSR-1 is −0.234±0.016‰ (2σ, n=17). Based on repeated analyses of standards, the long-term external precision of our method is better than ±0.05‰ for δ26Mg. This precision allows us to distinguish the fractionation of Mg isotopes in low-Mg granites and rhyolites as well as that between mantle minerals.
Precise and accurate determination of Sm, Nd concentrations and Nd isotopic compositions in geological samples by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:In this work, we established a highly reproducible analysis of Sm, Nd concentrations and Nd isotopic compositions in geological samples by isotope dilution analysis with MC-ICP-MS. This technique is superior in terms of the analytical reproducibility or rapidity of analysis compared with quadrupole ICP-MS or with thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) isotope dilution techniques. Samples were spiked with 149Sm–150Nd enriched tracer and then digested by a commonly used HF, HNO3 and HClO4 acid protocol. The bulk rare earth elements (REEs) were separated from the sample on a standard cation exchange resin, and further purified on Eichrom Technologies Ln Resin, to obtain Sm and Nd fractions prior to mass spectrometric measurements. Abstract:Both low procedural blank and high-precision measurements of isotopic ratios are crucial for the analysis of micro samples. This study reports a chemical procedure of ultra-low blank for the high precision measurement of Sr isotopic ratios on micro samples (< 1 ng level) using a new-type thermal ionization mass spectrometer IsoProbe-T, with a case study of single-grain Rb-Sr isochron dating on phlogopite from the Fuxian kimberlite in Liaoning Province. This method can be employed in studies of high resolution Rb-Sr geochronology and Sr isotopic geochemistry and thus will broaden application of the Rb-Sr isotopic system to earth sciences.

Abstract:Herein, we present a new method for determining the Ca isotopic composition of geological samples. To eliminate matrix elements from Ca, a column chromatography method was developed using a N,N,N'N' tetraoctyl-1,5-diglycolamide (TODGA) resin. The Ca isotopic compositions were measured by a multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) without collision cell equipment, especially that direct measurement to 44Ca/40Ca can be achieved. To mitigate the interference from 40Ar during 40Ca measurement, the cold plasma technique was used to suppress the Ar+ generation, resulting in a background Ar+ intensity of <300 mV, in contrast to the conventional hot plasma conditions, which typically yield thousands of volts for Ar+ intensities. Given the potential for a concentration mismatch between the sample and bracketed standard solutions to cause an intensive shift in measured Ca isotopic compositions, a correction for the [Ca] match is needed. To avoid matrix effects arising from residue matrix elements, it is crucial to limit the concentrations below 1% of Ca for most matrix elements (including Al, Mg, K, Na, and Sr) and below 1‰ for Fe. Notably, the tolerance of residue Sr is effectively improved compared to measurements with CC-MC-ICP-MS and traditional Hot-plasma-SSB-MC-ICP-MS methods with the conventional hot plasma technique, thereby lowering the complexity of column chemistry. The measured δ44/40Ca, δ44/42Ca, and ε40Ca values for eight reference materials agree well with previously reported values within analytical uncertainties. This method demonstrates long-term precision is better than 0.10‰ (two standard deviations) for both δ values (i.e., δ44/40Ca and δ44/42Ca). We anticipate that the proposed method will benefit the growth of the Ca isotope data set and foster an increase in the application of Ca isotope in Earth science studies.

Abstract:We report high-precision iron isotopic data for twenty-two commercially available geological reference materials, including silicates, carbonatite, shale, carbonate and clay. Accuracy was checked by analyses of synthetic solutions with known Fe isotopic compositions but different matrices ranging from felsic to ultramafic igneous rocks, high Ca and low Fe limestone, to samples enriched in transition group elements (e.g., Cu, Co and Ni). Analyses over a 2-year period of these synthetic samples and pure Fe solutions that were processed through the whole chemistry procedure yielded an average Fe-56 value of -0.0010.025 parts per thousand (2s, n=74), identical to the expected true value of 0. This demonstrates a long-term reproducibility and accuracy of <0.03 parts per thousand for determination of Fe-56/Fe-54 ratios. Reproducibility and accuracy were further confirmed by replicate measurements of the twenty-two RMs, which yielded results that perfectly match the mean values of published data within quoted uncertainties. New recommended values and associated uncertainties are presented for interlaboratory calibration in the future. Justesse a ete verifiee par des analyses de solutions synthetiques avec des compositions isotopiques Fe connus mais differentes matrices allant de felsique a ultramafiques roches ignees, calcaires haut dans Ca et a faible teneur en Fe, a des echantillons enrichis en elements du groupe de transition (par exemple, Cu, Co et Ni). Les analyses sur une periode de deux ans de ces echantillons synthetiques et des solutions pures de Fe qui ont ete traitees a travers l'ensemble de la procedure de chimie ont donne une valeur moyenne de Fe-56 -0,001 +/- 0.025 parts per thousand (2s, n=74), identique a la vraie valeur attendue de 0. Cela demontre une reproductibilite a long terme et la justesse de < 0.03 parts per thousand pour la determination des ratios Fe-56/Fe-54. La reproductibilite et la justesse ont ete confirmees par des mesures repetees sur les vingt-deux materiaux de reference, qui donnaient des resultats qui correspondent parfaitement avec les valeurs moyennes des donnees publiees dans les incertitudes cites. Nouvelles valeurs recommandees et les incertitudes associees sont presentees pour etalonnage en laboratoire a l'avenir.

Abstract:Stable isotopic systematics of Cu and Fe are two important tracers for geological and biological processes. Generally, separation of Cu and Fe from a matrix was achieved by two independent, completely different methods. In this study, we report a method for one-step anion-exchange separation of Cu and Fe from a matrix for igneous rocks using strong anion resin AG-MP-1M. Cu and Fe isotopic ratios were measured by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (Neptune plus) using a sample-standard bracketing method. External normalization using Zn to correct for instrumental bias was also adopted for Cu isotopic measurement of some samples. In addition, all parameters that could affect the accuracy and precision of isotopic measurements were examined. Long-term external reproducibility better than +/- 0.05 parts per thousand. (2SD) for delta Cu-65 and +/- 0.049 parts per thousand (2SD) for delta Fe-56 was routinely obtained. Cu and Fe isotopic compositions of commercially accessible igneous rock standards including basalt, diabase, amphibolite, andesite and granodiorite were measured using this method. delta Cu-65 values of igneous rock standards vary from -0.01 to +0.39 parts per thousand (n = 11) with an overall range (0.40 parts per thousand) that exceeds about 8 times that of the current analytical precision. The improved precisions of stable Cu isotopic analysis thus demonstrate that igneous rocks are not homogeneous in Cu isotopic composition. The procedure for one-step separation of Cu and Fe and high-precision analysis of Cu and Fe isotopic ratios have an important advantage for economical and efficient study of stable Cu and Fe isotopic systematics in geological and biological fields.

Abstract:Analytical advances in Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) over the past decade have led to rapid growth in studies utilizing non-traditional stable isotopes. There are substantial analytical challenges for achieving precise and accurate measurements of these isotopes that limit their applications in geoscience where natural isotopic variations are generally small. Here, we evaluate experimental factors that may affect the accuracy and repeatability of isotopic measurements of selected stable metal isotopes (Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) on a Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS to provide optimized analytical protocols for acquiring high quality data. Our results suggest that the repeatability level (2SD) that is readily obtainable for delta Li-7 is +/- 0.09 parts per thousand to +/- 0.24 parts per thousand, for delta Mg-26 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Fe-56 is +/- 0.05 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Cu-65 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, and for delta Zn-66 is +/- 0.02 parts per thousand to +/- 0.04 parts per thousand. Instrumental mass bias for these isotope systems can be corrected adequately using the standard-sample bracketing method but it requires that target elements are of high purity, a close match in analyte concentrations between samples and bracketing standards, and preparation of all running solutions using the same concentration of nitric acid. Overall, the Nu Plasma II is well suited for precise and accurate analyses of the isotopes studied here, and the optimal results were obtained using a 'wet' plasma operating at a normal radio-frequency (RF) power.
Zinc Isotope Measurement by MC‐ICP‐MS in Geological Certified Reference Materials

Abstract:Here we present an analytical method for Zinc (Zn) isotopic measurements using “standard‐sample bracketing” on a Nu Sapphire multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometer. The effects of Zn mass fraction and HNO3 molarity mismatch between the standard and the sample, as well as the presence of matrix elements have been evaluated. Long‐term reproducibility of better than ±0.03‰ for δ66Zn (2s) was routinely obtained. Accurate measurements were achieved when CNi/CZn < 0.001, CTi/CZn < 0.03, CBa/CZn < 0.05, CNa/CZn and CAl/CZn < 0.5, CMg/CZn < 0.1, CFe/CZn < 5 and CCu/CZn as well as CCd/CZn < 10. High‐precision Zn isotopic determination were performed on twenty‐one widely available geological certified reference materials, with an overall range of ~ 0.62‰ (0.15 to 1.07‰), which is nearly twenty times the current analytical precision (0.03), and the results are in agreement with most previously published data within 2s. Among them, δ66ZnJMC 3‐0749L of eleven geological certified reference materials are reported for the first time: 0.22 ± 0.03‰ (dolerite, DR‐N), 0.23 ± 0.02‰ (gabbro, GSR‐10), 0.20 ± 0.04‰ (microgabbro, PM‐S), 0.15 ± 0.02‰ (andesite, GSR‐2), 0.22 ± 0.08‰ (diorite, GSR‐9), 0.19 ± 0.07‰ (syenite, GSR‐7), 0.30 ± 0.06‰ (granite, GSR‐1), 0.25 ± 0.00‰ (rhyolite, GSR‐11), 0.37 ± 0.01‰ (shale, GSR‐5), 0.21 ± 0.03‰ (limestone, GSR‐6) and 0.20 ± 0.03‰ (hornblendite, GSR‐15). The novel Zn isotopic data from these certified reference materials can be used for future interlaboratory comparisons.

Abstract:We present a high precision method to measure Ba isotopes by multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Barium is separated from matrices by using a cation exchange resin (AG50W-X12, 200–400 mesh). Instrumental mass bias of Ba isotopes was corrected by a samplestandard bracketing method using SRM3104a as the bracketing standard. Potential effects of different matrices from resin and samples, and acid molarity and concentration mismatch were rigorously evaluated in this study. The precision and accuracy of this method were tested by the measurement of a synthetic solution made by mixing SRM3104a Ba with other matrix elements. The average dBa of the synthetic solution is 0.005 0.047& (2SD, n 1⁄4 36) relative to SRM3104a. The robustness of this method was further assessed by replicated analyses of 8 reference materials, including igneous rocks with mafic to felsic compositions. The dBa of basalt standards BCR-2, BHVO-2, and JB-2 is 0.050 0.039& (2SD, n 1⁄4 13), 0.047 0.028& (2SD, n 1⁄4 22), and 0.085 0.035& (2SD, n 1⁄4 19), respectively; diabase standard W-2 is 0.035 0.022& (2SD, n 1⁄4 11); andesite standard AGV-1 is 0.047 0.040& (2SD, n 1⁄4 11) and JA-2 is 0.038 0.048& (2SD, n 1⁄4 17); rhyolite standard RGM-1 is 0.142 0.030& (2SD, n 1⁄4 15); and granodiorite standard GSP-2 is 0.013 0.046& (2SD, n 1⁄4 15). Two late Mesozoic basalts from China have a dBa of 0.132 0.020& (2SD, n 1⁄4 7) and 0.001 0.034& (2SD, n 1⁄4 7), respectively. Based on repeated analyses of the synthetic standard and a carbonate standard IAEA-CO-9, the long-term external precision of our method is better than 0.05&, much smaller than the variation of dBa in these reference standards and samples (up to 0.27&). Therefore, the Ba isotopic composition can be used as a novel tracer to study geochemical processes.
