Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:Fluorescence-based chemical sensors have garnered significant attention due to their rapid response, high sensitivity, cost-effectiveness and ease of operation. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively utilized as platforms for constructing fluorescence sensors, owing to their ultra-high porosity, flexible tunability, and excellent luminescent properties. This feature article summarizes the progress made mainly by our research group in recent years in the construction strategies, principles, and types of MOF sensors, as well as their applications in quantitative sensing, qualitative identification analysis, and multimodal/multifunctional analysis. In addition, the challenges and an outlook on the future progression of MOF-based sensors are discussed, highlighting how these studies can contribute to addressing these issues. Hopefully, this feature article can provide some valuable guidance for the construction and application of MOFs in fluorescence sensing, thereby broadening their practical applications.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-based fluorescent sensors have emerged as a competitive alternative to small molecule sensors, due to their excellent fluorescence-based sensing capabilities. The tailorability of design, architecture, and photophysical properties has attracted the attention of many research groups, resulting in numerous reports related to novel nanosensors applied in sensing a vast variety of biological analytes. Although semiconducting quantum dots have been the best-known representative of fluorescent nanoparticles for a long time, the increasing popularity of new classes of organic nanoparticle-based sensors, such as carbon dots and polymeric nanoparticles, is due to their biocompatibility, ease of synthesis, and biofunctionalization capabilities. For instance, fluorescent gold and silver nanoclusters have emerged as a less cytotoxic replacement for semiconducting quantum dot sensors. This chapter provides an overview of recent developments in nanoparticle-based sensors for chemical and biological sensing and includes a discussion on unique properties of nanoparticles of different composition, along with their basic mechanism of fluorescence, route of synthesis, and their advantages and limitations.

Organic Fluorescent Dye-based Nanomaterials: Advances in the Rational Design for Imaging and Sensing Applications

Abstract:Self-assembled fluorescent nanomaterials based on small-molecule organic dyes are gaining increasing popularity in imaging and sensing applications over the past decade. This is primarily due to their ability to combine spectral properties tunability and biocompatibility of small molecule organic fluorophores with brightness, chemical and colloidal stability of inorganic materials. Such a unique combination of features comes with rich versatility of dye-based nanomaterials: from aggregates of small molecules to sophisticated core-shell nanoarchitectures involving hyperbranched polymers. Along with the ongoing discovery of new materials and better ways of their synthesis, it is very important to continue systematic studies of fundamental factors that regulate the key properties of fluorescent nanomaterials: their size, polydispersity, colloidal stability, chemical stability, absorption and emission maxima, biocompatibility, and interactions with biological interfaces. In this review, we focus on the systematic description of various types of organic fluorescent nanomaterials, approaches to their synthesis, and ways to optimize and control their characteristics. The discussion is built on examples from reports on recent advances in the design and applications of such materials. Conclusions made from this analysis allow a perspective on future development of fluorescent nanomaterials design for biomedical and related applications.

Abstract:Multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have gained increasing attention for their fundamental investigation and intelligent applications. In this work, we report design and synthesis of a novel polyamic acid bearing oligoaniline, triphenylamine, and fluorene groups, which served as sensitive units and fluorescence emission unit, respectively. The resulting polymer exhibits multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching behavior triggered by redox species, pH, electrochemical, and pressure stimuli. Every fluorescence switching mechanism upon each stimulus was studied in detail. The interactions and energy transfer between sensitive units and emission unit are largely responsible for this fascinating fluorescent switching behavior. This work provides a deep understanding of the optical switching essence upon these stimuli, opening the way for the development of new fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:Taking advantage of high porosity, large surface area, tunable nanostructures and ease of functionalization, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been popularly applied in different fields, including adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, drug delivery, light harvesting, and chemical/biological sensing. The abundant active sites for specific recognition and adjustable optical and electrical characteristics allow for the design of various sensing platforms with MOFs as promising candidates. In this review, we systematically introduce the recent advancements of MOFs-based fluorescent chemosensors and biosensors, mainly focusing on the sensing mechanisms and analytes, including inorganic ions, small organic molecules and biomarkers (e.g., small biomolecules, nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, and tumor cells). This review may provide valuable references for the development of novel MOFs-based sensing platforms to meet the requirements of environment monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

This review focuses on methods for optimizing emission wavelength, quantum yield and photostability. We focus not just on the trends, but the fundamental physical organic chemistry concepts that inform the connection between molecular structure and fluorescent properties. This approach offers an essential understanding of fluorescence, enabling readers to develop a systematic analytical framework for thinking about fluorescence. Furthermore, an evaluation of newer non‐planar fluorophores shines light on the bright future of fluorescent molecules.

Abstract:The continuous development of society has led to the flourishing of environmental chemistry and biomedical fields, as well as to the research and development of novel functional materials and sensors. Some novel materials have excellent optical and biological/chemical properties and can be coupled with the optical fiber grating. The coupling between the materials and optical fiber grating can improve the performance due to the advanced materials can amplify the changing signals generated during the reaction with analytes of organic compounds. Despite the great achievements in the development of bio- and chemical-optical fiber grating sensors, there is no publicly available systematic review of the recent advances in the use of materials combined with optical fiber grating in organic substances sensing available in the literature since January 2016. Thus, we summarized the sensing principles of the bio- and chemical-optical fiber grating with and without surface plasmon resonance. We discussed the performance parameters such as sensitivity, selectivity, detection range, and low limit of detection for detection of organic substances including organic pollutants, life organics (glucose, hemoglobin, cancer markers, antibody-antigen, biotin and streptavidin, DNA, enzymes), microorganisms, and other organic substances. We analyzed the advantages and limitations of optical fiber grating sensors and presented challenges in their practical applications and future research directions.

Abstract:The fluorescence properties, e.g., fluorescence intensity, of fluorescent sensors can change due to covalent derivatization or noncovalent complexation with a target chemical species (i.e., molecules and ions) or by variations in circumstantial physical parameters (e.g., temperature and viscosity). The internal charge transfer (ICT) character and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) efficiency can be used to tune the fluorescence switching mechanism, facilitating the development of new fluorescent sensors. In addition, the utilization of an environment-sensitive (i.e., polarity- and hydrogen bonding-sensitive) fluorophore in stimulus-responsive macromolecules to design novel fluorescent sensors has been proposed. Based on this concept, highly sensitive fluorescent polymeric thermometers and (extremely sensitive) digital fluorescent pH sensors have been developed. These thermometers are being used to measure the temperature of live cells in biological and medical studies. This concept has also allowed nanoscale proton mapping near membranes, which exemplifies the downsizing of targets for fluorescent sensing from a micrometer-scale to a nanometer-scale.

Abstract:Fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials, due to their excellence performance in organic electronics and biological sensing, have attracted more and more attention in the fields of chemistry, materials, biology, and so on. In the past years, significant advances in both the experimental and theoretical fronts have been made for the nanomaterials and nanotechnology. However, compared with fluorescent inorganic quantum dots or polymer nanoparticles, fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) which based on pi-conjugated systems, are becoming more and more important to bio-imaging, drug carriers and optoelectronic, since the wider variability and flexibility in materials synthesis and nanoparticles preparation of organic molecules. This paper systematically introduces the recent research developments of the design, synthesis, photophysical properties and application of fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials. The highlights of this paper are the preparation methods of fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials, such as reprecipitation method, ion association method, self-assembly method, micro-emulsion method, laser fabrication method, adsorbent assisted physical vapor deposition method. We briefly conclude the advantages and disadvantages of the above-mentioned synthetic methods. In addition, we also compare the properties of the fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials synthesized by different method, and give a brief introduction to their application on organic optoelectronic devices, chemical and biological sensing, bio-imaging and other fields.

Abstract:Imaging methods by the means of optical sensors are applied in diverse scientific areas such as medical research and diagnostics, aerodynamics, environmental analysis, or marine research. After a general introduction to the field, this review is focused on works published between 2012 and 2022. The covered topics include planar sensors (optrodes), nanoprobes, and sensitive coatings. Advanced sensor materials combined with imaging technologies enable the visualization of parameters which exhibit no intrinsic color or fluorescence, such as oxygen, pH, CO2, H2O2, Ca2+, or temperature. The progress on the development of multiple sensors and methods for referenced signal read out is also highlighted, as is the recent progress in device design and application formats using model systems in the lab or methods for measurements’ in the field.

Abstract:The recognition and sensing of the biologically and environmentally important metal ions has emerged as a significant goal in the field of chemical sensors in recent years. Among the various analytical methods, fluorescence has been a powerful tool due to its simplicity, high detection limit and application to bioimaging. This review highlights the fluorescent chemosensors for metal ions, which have been recently developed from our laboratory. This review was categorized by target metal ions, such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Vanadate, Ag+ and Au3+. Selectivity and sensitivity for these metal ions were achieved by introducing various ligands to core fluorophores, such as, rhodamine, fluorescein, pyrene, anthracene, naphthalimide, coumarin, and BODIPY.

Abstract:Photoluminescence of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is sensitive to the structure and concentration of chemical species in the surroundings since MOFs combine the advantages of highly ordered porous structures, varied luminescence origins and diversified host-guest interactions. The diversity and combination flexibility of the organic and inorganic components together with the voids within MOFs offer ample possibilities for tuning their luminescence properties. On the basis of their intrinsic framework structures and biocompatible building blocks, MOFs have stimulated great interest in the area of biosensors. By elaborating on these points, this review will provide up-to-date developments in luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) with emphasis on synthetic approaches and their application in sensing biomolecules. The design outline of LMOFs including functionalization with fluorescent linkers and metal centers and incorporating fluorescent guest molecules within MOFs is presented, and the sensing properties of LMOFs for biomolecules such as DNA/RNA, enzymes/proteins, amino acids, glucose, ascorbic acid, and antibiotics are summarized.

Abstract:MOFs are self-assembled by inorganic metals and organic ligands, which have the advantages of inorganic and organic materials. With its porosity, chemical tunability and moderate-to-high stability, MOFs have become excellent candidates for fluorescence sensors. The accuracy, sensitivity, selectivity and linear range of the MOF-based fluorescence sensor can be further improved by introducting other fluorescent molecules into the MOFs. MOF-based fluorescence sensors can be widely used in water and air pollution detection, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases and other fields. This review first fouces on the principle of MOF-based fluorescence sensors, including the origin of fluorescence signal, response mode and mechanism. Subsequently, the latest developments of MOF-based fluorescence sensors are reported according to the classification of the analytes. Finally, the challenges faced by MOF-based fluorescence sensors are discussed and some solutions and directions for future have been proposed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as chemical sensors have developed rapidly in recent years. There have been many papers concerning this field and interest is still growing. The reason is that the specific merits of MOFs can be utilized to enhance sensitivity and selectivity by various energy/charge transfers occurring among different ligands, ligand, and metal centers, such as from ligands to metal centers or metal centers to ligands, as well as from MOF skeletons to guest species. This review intends to provide an update on recent progress in various applications of different MOF-based sensors on the basis of their luminescent and electrochemical responses towards small molecules, gas molecules, ions (cations and anions), pH, humidity, temperature, and biomolecules. MOF-based sensors function by utilizing different mechanisms, including luminescent responses of "turn-on" and "turn-off", as well as electrochemical responses.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials based on organic building blocks containing light elements such as C, H, O, N and B interconnected by covalent bonds. Because of their regular crystal structure, high porosity, stable mechanical structure, satisfactory specific surface area, easy to be functionalized, and highly tunable, they have demonstrated important applications in several fields. Currently, most of the established methods based on COFs can only be used for individual detection or adsorption of the target. Impressively, fluorescent COFs, as a special presence in the COFs family, are able to achieve highly selective and sensitive detection of target analytes by fluorescence enhancement or fluorescence quenching. The construction of a dual-functional platform for the detection and adsorption based on fluorescent COFs can simultaneous realize the visual monitoring and adsorption of the target analytes. Therefore, this paper reviews the research progress of fluorescent COFs as fluorescence sensing and adsorption materials. Firstly, the fluorescent COFs were classified according to the different bonding modes between the building blocks, and then the applications of fluorescent COFs based detection and adsorption bifunctional materials for various environmental contaminants were highlighted. Finally, the challenges and future application prospects were discussed.

Abstract:A red-emitting Eu metal-organic framework (EuMOF) is successfully obtained by S.-Y. Song, H.-J. Zhang, and co-workers and serves as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor toward different organic molecules and inorganic ions. On page 4034, the red emission signal is changed after exposing the EuMOF to the analytes under UV light excitation: some of them even quench the luminescence. This work paves the way for the practical application of luminescent MOF sensors for pollutant detection.
