Abstract:Following the development of photoluminescence systems with various compositions, some nontraditional structures, including nonaromatic organic systems as fluorophores and organic luminogens as the source of phosphorescence emission at room temperature, have attracted considerable attention for their advantages in biological and medical applications, and for the updated photophysical understandings in science. In this Review, the recent progress in understanding these organic compounds or polymers for fluorescence and phosphorescence is briefly summarized, with the aim of exploring the intrinsic principle of these novel photoluminescence systems and providing reasonable constructs for molecular design. Finally, some prospects are suggested for further development of this continually expanding area of research, with the coined concept of Molecular Uniting Set Identified Characteristic (MUSIC).

Abstract:Mechanofluorochromic materials, which are dependent on changes in physical molecular packing modes, have attracted considerable interest over the past ten years. In this review, recent progress in the area of pure organic mechanofluorochromism is summarized, and majority of the reported organic mechanofluorochromic systems are discussed, along with their derived structure-property relationships. The existence of a structural relationship between aggregation-induced emission compounds and mechanofluorochromism is recognized based on our recent results, which considered aggregation-induced emission compounds as a well of mechanofluorochromic materials. The established structure-property relationship will guide researchers in identifying and synthesizing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:The development of organic electroluminescent materials is one of the forefronts and hot areas of the optoelectronic information materials, on account of the advantages of organic electroluminescent materials compared to inorganic counterpart. Fluorene and its derivatives which have an aromatic biphenyl structure with wide energy gap in the backbones and high luminescent efficiency have drawn much attention of materials chemists and device physicists. The progress about fluorene-based electroluminescent materials domestic and abroad as well as our own work in the past few years is reviewed. Some issues to be addressed and hotspots to be further investigated are also discussed.

Abstract:Pure organic luminescent supramolecular materials with either phosphorescence or fluorescence emission have become a hot research topic due to their low toxity, facile preparation and wide applications.In recent years, our group has designed several novel luminescent macromolecules, achieving tunable multi-color emission.For the construction of phosphorescent materials, heavy atoms such as bromine and iodine as well as other hetroatoms with lone pair electrons like oxygen were employed to facilitate the intersystem crossing (ISC) process of the luminophores while rigid environments were provided via host-guest interactions and polymerization to restrict molecular motions, which results in reduced nonradiative decay.Moreover, noncovalent interactions are stimuli responsive because of their dynamic nature.Therefore, host-guest interactions, along with other noncovalent interactions including hydrophobic effects, π-π stacking and multiple hydrogen bonding, were also used for adjusting the intensities and wavelengths of phosphorescence or fluorescence, achieving diverse luminescence properties that the luminophore itself does not possess.This account summarizes the above advances and proposes possible directions for further research, like not only improving quantum yields but also expanding the range of emission wavelength of organic phosphorescent materials and developing luminescent materials that can intelligently respond to external stimuli.

Abstract:Fluorene and its derivatives are important compounds, which have biphenyl structure with rigid plane, as well as large pi-conjugated system. These special structures of fluorene compounds endow their distinct various functions, properties and biological activities, as well as wide potential application in photoelectrical materials, medicinal agents and so on. More importantly, the fluorene compounds are easily modified and various functional groups could be conveniently introduced into the fluorene ring. The syntheses of fluorene derivatives and their potential applications were extensively investigated and have been become highly active highlight in recent years, and the progress is quite rapid. Combining with our researches and referring other works from literatures, this paper systematically reviews the recent advance in the research and development of fluorene in organic electro-luminescence materials, two-photon absorbing materials, photochromic materials, solar cells, medicinal chemistry and so on. The perspectives of the foreseeable future are also presented.

Abstract:Organic fluorescent polymers have unique characteristics of fluorescent signal amplification and good optical properties, and can detect specific analytical species. Their sensing performance can be further improved through reasonable modification of their side chains. Nowadays, the organic fluorescent polymers are mainly prepared by metal coupling reactions, and there are also some syntheses involving in addition polymerization and condensation reactions. Taking the fluorescent source of these polymers as the main line, the research progress of the fluorescent organic polymers in the sensor field in recent years is systematically reviewed from the perspective of the type of reaction, especially their design and synthesis, sensing application, detection mechanism are summarized. In the future, it is still to be further investigated to design and synthesize novel multifunctional organic polymer fluorescence sensors as the key development direction.

Abstract:The polymers with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect usually contain π-π conjugated chromophore.Recently,polymers containing unconventional chromophores,such as aliphatic amine,carbonyl,ester group et al.,can also emit eye-catching bright fluorescence under appropriate conditions.Compared with conjugated photoluminescent polymers,containing benzene and heterocyclic ring,nonconjugated photoluminescent polymers show lower toxicity and better environmental friendly.Therefore,nonconjugated photoluminescent polymers have potential application in biological probe,drug delivery,and bioimaging.However,it is a big challenge to reveal the mechanism of photoluminescence,which is now controversial.In this paper,the photoluminescence mechanism and the latest application research of the polymers are analyzed,based on the species of polymers,including hyperbranched poly(amidoamine),poly (amino ester),poly(ethylenimine),polysiloxanes.

Abstract:Biofluorescence imaging enables real-time, visual detection of biomolecules, cells and tissues/organs on a three-dimensional scale. And it can track the various physiological processes of the organism and understand the relationship between biomolecules and their structure and function. Near-infrared imaging has a high temporal and spatial resolution, low damage to biological tissues and strong penetrating capability, good sensitivity and low background fluorescence interference, which are the advantages of imaging technology. However, at present, the deficiencies of fluorescent groups include relatively low fluorescence quantum yield and unfavorably short emission wavelength in the NIR region, especially in the second near-infrared window (1000–1700 nm, NIR-II). In the in vivo processes and applications of NIR fluorescence materials, biocompatibility, fluorescence quantum efficiency and adjustability of excitation and emission wavelengths in the NIR region should be considered. Therefore, organic polymeric materials are ideal for the construction of the NIR fluorescence probe. In this review, the synthesis and applications of NIR fluorescence polymers were summarized and the future trend has prospected as well.

Abstract:Fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials, due to their excellence performance in organic electronics and biological sensing, have attracted more and more attention in the fields of chemistry, materials, biology, and so on. In the past years, significant advances in both the experimental and theoretical fronts have been made for the nanomaterials and nanotechnology. However, compared with fluorescent inorganic quantum dots or polymer nanoparticles, fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) which based on pi-conjugated systems, are becoming more and more important to bio-imaging, drug carriers and optoelectronic, since the wider variability and flexibility in materials synthesis and nanoparticles preparation of organic molecules. This paper systematically introduces the recent research developments of the design, synthesis, photophysical properties and application of fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials. The highlights of this paper are the preparation methods of fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials, such as reprecipitation method, ion association method, self-assembly method, micro-emulsion method, laser fabrication method, adsorbent assisted physical vapor deposition method. We briefly conclude the advantages and disadvantages of the above-mentioned synthetic methods. In addition, we also compare the properties of the fluorescent organic small molecular nanomaterials synthesized by different method, and give a brief introduction to their application on organic optoelectronic devices, chemical and biological sensing, bio-imaging and other fields.

Abstract:Organic lanthanide complexes have garnered significant attention in various fields due to their intriguing energy transfer mechanism, enabling the upconversion (UC) of two or more low-energy photons into high-energy photons. In comparison to lanthanide-doped inorganic nanoparticles, organic UC complexes hold great promise for biological delivery applications due to their advantageous properties of controllable size and composition. This review aims to provide a summary of the fundamental concept and recent developments of organic lanthanide-based UC materials based on different mechanisms. Furthermore, we also detail recent applications in the fields of bioimaging and solar cells. The developments and forthcoming challenges in organic lanthanide-based UC offer readers valuable insights and opportunities to engage in further research endeavors.

Abstract:In this review, recent advances that exploit the intrinsic emission of organic materials for reversibly modulating their intensity with applied potential are surveyed. Key design strategies that have been adopted during the past five years for developing such electrofluorochromic materials are presented, focusing on molecular fluorophores that are coupled with redox-active moieties, intrinsically electroactive molecular fluorophores, and unconjugated emissive organic polymers. The structural effects, main challenges, and strides toward addressing the limitations of emerging fluorescent materials that are electrochemically responsive are surveyed, along with how these can be adapted for their use in electrofluorochromic devices.
