Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:Multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have gained increasing attention for their fundamental investigation and intelligent applications. In this work, we report design and synthesis of a novel polyamic acid bearing oligoaniline, triphenylamine, and fluorene groups, which served as sensitive units and fluorescence emission unit, respectively. The resulting polymer exhibits multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching behavior triggered by redox species, pH, electrochemical, and pressure stimuli. Every fluorescence switching mechanism upon each stimulus was studied in detail. The interactions and energy transfer between sensitive units and emission unit are largely responsible for this fascinating fluorescent switching behavior. This work provides a deep understanding of the optical switching essence upon these stimuli, opening the way for the development of new fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:In this work, based on the fluorescence changes of Zn-TCPE we report a novel strategy for perceiving harmful amines migrated from packaging printing inks. In an aqueous solution, Zn-TCPE fluorescence is quenched by water molecule coordination. However, after the introduction of nitrogen heterocyclic, aromatic, and aliphatic amines, respectively, competitive coordination substitution and electrostatic interactions with amino groups inhibit the movement of the AIE-active organic ligand, leading to the re-enhancement of fluorescence. Fluorescence restart enables the highly sensitive and selective detection of potentially harmful amines with low detection limits of 18.7-68.5 nM. So far, the methods for sensitive sensing of amines based on MOFs destruction-triggered fluorescence "turn-off-on" have seldom been reported up to now. Compared with traditional methods, this sensing method with fluorescence "turn-off-on" is simpler, faster, and more sensitive. The detection results of amines in the actual sample reveal that the fluorescent probe has good application prospects.

Abstract:Development of fluorescent heterocyclic compounds bearing s-triazine and cyclotriphosphazene scaffold for researching the structure-property relationship and high efficiency amine sensing is still challenging. Herein, we prepared two polypodal aldehyde-based flexible organic compounds based on triazine and cyclotriphosphazene units (TRIPOD and HAPCP). And two hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, named HOF-TRIPOD and HOF-HAPCP, with different photophysical properties and structural packing mode were obtained. In addition, the fluorescence response of two molecules to aliphatic amine was studied, in which they all have good selectivity and obvious fluorescence enhancement effect to ethylenediamine. The utilization of these fluorescent molecules as a sensor platform material could be applicable to ethylenediamine detection.

Abstract:Although the construction of specific functional crystalline materials is still challenging, the multi-component molecular assembly has become a key solution for the design of functional materials. Here, we report a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) material FJU-360 constructed from disodium 6‑hydroxy-5-[(4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonate (SSY) and terephthalimidamide. The charge-assisted hydrogen bonding between amidinium and sulfonate makes FJU-360 produce much stronger fluorescence than SSY, and can be used as a luminescence sensor to rapidly quench aniline through luminescence quenching. FJU-360 is sensitive and highly selective for the detection of aniline, and the detection limit reached 3.2 nmol/L, which is the lowest value reported currently. The mechanism of aniline response was analyzed through the aniline@FJU-360 single crystal structure, and the luminescence mechanism was clarified through density function theory calculations. This work is an important step towards the rational synthesis and assembly of sensing materials.

Abstract:Due to the diverse chemical structures and varying basicity of amines, the development of rapid, portable, and reversible methods for the selective recognition of trace organic amines in the environment remains a challenge. Herein, a novel recyclable and selective turn-off fluorescent sensor for organic amines detection based on covalent organic framework (COF) was developed. As-synthesized COF, TAPB-BTDD exhibits good crystallinity, high chemical stability and strong fluorescence, which can selectively recognize triethylamine (TEA) and aniline in both liquid and vapor phase. The COF material demonstrates impressively low LOD values for aniline and triethylamine in solution, estimated to be 27 nM and 170 nM, respectively. Moreover, when detecting aniline and triethylamine vapors, the calculated LOD values are 20.1 ppb and 106.4 ppb, respectively. In addition, TAPB-BTDD showed basically unchanged emission intensities and rapid response to the amines after ten recycling tests, suggesting that the COF has high stable recycle repeatability. The combination of experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates that the unique fluorescence-quenching response of TAPB-BTDA can be attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the amines and the COF. This COF-based sensor offers a promising solution for the accurate and reliable detection of organic amines in various environmental settings.

Abstract:Fast and effective volatile acid trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) sensing is urgently demanded environmental safety. Herein, a novel "turn-on" fluorescent chemosensor of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-planarized bis-Schiff-base was designed and facilely synthesized. The bi-Schiff-based TPE derivative contains two symmetrical terminal naphthalene rings making it nonluminescence. While it exhibited obvious "turn on" fluorescent emission and a real-time visual color changes upon TFA both in solution and vapor phases, respectively. The test paper color change was reversible by the fuming of NH3. Photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the acidichromism mechanism. The fluorescent sensor shows high selectivity and sensitivity for TFA detection. The design of TPE-planarized provide a new strategy for AIE-active "turn-on/off" fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:An overview of biogenic amine sensors using organic conjugated active layers is presented. Biogenic amines are released from decomposing food stuffs, in particular meat and fish, and thus the detection of such off gasses can help minimize food waste and prevent the consumption of spoiled foods reducing illnesses. The creation of real-time food monitoring sensors may replace best before dates and increase the efficiency and effectiveness in how humans treat food. Owing to the importance of this topic, numerous efforts have been put forth to develop biogenic amines sensors. A sub-section includes those based on organic conjugated materials, versatile compounds that can undergo changes to electronic structures upon interaction with the amines. This short review summarizes key findings in the development of colorimetric and fluorescent sensors based upon organic molecules, polymers, and covalent frameworks and electrochemical sensors using organic polymers and carbon nanomaterials in radio-frequency identification, chemiresistive, and field-effect transistor-based devices.

Abstract:The development of selective sensing materials for biogenic amine detection has attracted tremendous interest because amines have high toxicity and exist widely. In this paper, phenazine-bridged pillar[5]arene monomers PA and a naphthalene diimide containing neutral guest-bearing alkyl chain binding sites NDI were designed and synthesized. They could self-assemble by host–guest interactions to form a microsphere structure in dilute solution. A series of biogenic amines can selectively quench the microsphere fluorescence. The microsphere structure transformed into the supramolecular polymer gel at relatively high concentrations. More interestingly, the supramolecular polymerization process induced fluorescence emission enhancement based on an AIE mechanism in the gel state. The supramolecular polymer gel material exhibited sensitive stimulus–response behavior owing to stimuli-induced reversible electron transfer in the presence of various amines. The gel soft material collapse could be achieved by fuming under a series of amines vapors. Besides, our results demonstrate an effective material design strategy that may be extended to fluorescence sensing of biogenic amine in solution, gel, and air and applications to detect food spoilage. It is envisaged that this important method would pave the way for overcoming the sensor's application constraints in the solution state.

Abstract:Amine determination is crucial to our daily life, including the prevention of pollution, the treatment of certain disorders, and the evaluation of food quality. Herein, a mixed-linkage donor-acceptor covalent organic framework (named DSE-COF) was first constructed by the polymerization between 2,4-dihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (DTA) and 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diyl)dianiline (SEZ). DSE-COF displayed superior turn-on fluorescent responses to primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines, such as cadaverine, isopropylamine, sec-butylamine, cyclohexylamine, hexamethylenediamine, di-n-butylamine, and triethylamine in absolute acetonitrile than other organic species. Further experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the combination of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effects between the DSE-COF and aliphatic amines resulted in enhanced fluorescence. Credibly, DSE-COF can quantitatively detect cadaverine content in actual pork samples with satisfactory results. In addition, DSE-COF-based test papers could rapidly monitor cadaverine from real pork samples, manifesting the potential application of COFs in food quality inspection.

Abstract:In light of the escalating industrial and environmental pollution, there is a pressing need for the development of novel materials capable of swiftly detecting pollutants. Here, we report the synthesis of five lanthanide metal-organic frameworks sharing a common structure, prepared via a hydrothermal method and denoted as [Ln2(H2DHBDC)2(phen)(H2O)6]n (where CUST-888 corresponds to Tb, CUST-889 corresponds to Eu, CUST-890 corresponds to Gd, CUST-891 corresponds to Dy, and CUST-892 corresponds to Nd). Notably, CUST-888 and CUST-889 exhibit discernible visual alterations in response to acidic and alkaline conditions. To assess their practical utility, luminescent test strips and light-emitting diode lights based on CUST-888 and CUST-889 were devised, enabling the visual detection of luminescence color changes induced by Hg2+, Cr2O72-, tetracycline, and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. Furthermore, highlighters derived from CUST-888 and CUST-889 were designed, showcasing robust stability, adjustable color, and substantial potential for application in the realm of anticounterfeiting.
Cellulose-based colorimetric/ratiometric fluorescence sensor for visual detecting amines and anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:Many amines with high toxicity always cause a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health; thus, their detection is important. Herein, a dual-mode colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on cellulose for detecting amines has been constructed by a new strategy. This sensor is made of a "negative response" indicator (Lum-MDI-CA) and a "positive response" indicator (perylene tetracarboxylic acid, PTCA). Lum-MDI-CA was obtained by attaching luminol onto cellulose chains, which emitted blue fluorescence and was quenched upon contact with amines. A possible mechanism of fluorescence quenching phenomenon is proposed by the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of Lum-MDI-CA. Subsequently, by simply mixing Lum-MDI-CA with PTCA, a dual-mode fluorescence sensor was designed for visual detection and classification of amines. When adding ammonia (NH3), morpholine (MOR), benzylamine (BNZ), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA), respectively, the dual-mode sensor showed visible different color changes under both UV light and daylight. In addition, owing to the excellent processibility and formability of cellulose acetate backbone, the prepared sensor can be easily processed into different material forms, including inks, coatings, films, and fibers, which still exhibit excellent fluorescence emission. Such sensors based on cellulose fluorescent materials are of great value in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Abstract:Organic fluorophores play essential roles in both academic and applied fields. Most of the fluorescent molecules can be divided into aggregation-caused quenching(ACQ) and aggregation-induced emission(AIE) types based on the diverse emission properties in solution and aggregated states. Currently, a large part of studies focuses on the ACQ-to-AIE one-way transformation and the complex synthesis of chemical bonds is inevitable in all existing methods. To maximize the advantages of ACQ and AIE types fluorophores and avoid complex chemosynthesis, we propose a facile strategy first realizing the reversible ACQAIE transformation with the dynamic Diels-Alder(DA) reactions. Besides, the fluorescent platform can monitor DA reactions in microscale ultra-sensitively and quantitively. The dynamic covalent bonds can help to develop novel fluorophores creatively, and the reversible ACQ-AIE platform is expected to offer fresh insights into the dynamic covalent chemistry.
An electron-deficient viologen metal-organic material for colorimetric and luminescence sensing of organic amines

Abstract:Organic amines are ubiquitous and essential in the dye, polymer, and pharmaceutical industries, but can also be highly corrosive and toxic. Developing a quick and efficient method to detect organic amines is an important challenge. In this paper, we demonstrate the detection of organic amines by colorimetric and luminescence sensing of an electron-deficient viologen metal organic material. The material, comprising 1-(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium and Cd(II), possesses a two-dimensional framework with viologen-lined chromophores and accessible electron-deficient viologen moieties constituting Lewis acidic sites. It exhibits reversible photochromic behavior under UV–Vis light irradiation and a visual color change and fluorescence quenching upon contact with amine vapors and solutions. Due to the defined pore size of the framework, the fluorescence sensing efficiency showed organic amine size dependence. The vapochromism and fluorescence quenching is attributable to electron transfer from the organic amine to the electron-deficient viologen moiety, generating colored viologen radicals.

Abstract:Novel high-performance non-labeled fluoro-sensing micro/nano-optics require lithographically fabricable stimuli-fluorescence transductive materials well-tailored in molecular levels, towards superior processibility, stability, sensitivity, on-chip integration and portability, and real-time and in situ analysis. Here, aggregation-induced-emission fluorophores with oxetane groups (AIEoxes) and their covalently co-crosslinkable epoxy composites are customized for the fabrication of micro/nano-devices via single/multi-photon lithography. The oxetane modification increases the AIEoxe miscibility in the epoxy matrix (doping ratio up to 10 wt%), and consequently improves the as-formed devices’ quality, stability, and fluorescence intensity and sensitivity. The multi-color-AIEoxe polymeric micro/nano-devices allow fluorescence-resonance-energy-transfer among AIEoxes, which enables sensitive and specifically spectral detection of VOCs. With the micro/nano-waveguide configuration, solvent-responsive AIE fluorescence and evanescent-field/refractive-index sensing enhance the AIE-fluorescent detection of trace organic solvents in aqueous solutions (detection limit, ∼0.004% v/v, tetrahydrofuran/water) and their facile integration in functional micro/nano-systems like optofluidics.

Abstract:The aromatic chromophores, for example, perylene diimides (PDIs) are well known for their desirable absorption and emission properties. However, their stacking nature hinders the exploitation of these properties and further applications. To fabricate emissive aggregates or solid-state materials, it has been common practice to decrease the degree of stacking of PDIs by incorporating substituents into the parent aromatic ring. However, such practice often involves difficultorganic synthesis with multiple steps. A supramolecular approach is established here to fabricate highly fluorescent and responsive soft materials, which has greatly decreases the number of required synthetic steps and also allows for a system with switchable photophysical properties. The highly fluorescent smart material exhibits great adaptivity and can be used as a supramolecular sensor for the rapid detection of spermine with high sensitivity and selectivity, which is crucial for the early diagnosis of malignant tumors.
