Abstract:We report on the crystal growth, spectroscopic properties and laser performance of Tm3+-doped Bi4Si3O12(BSO) crystal. The crystal was grown by the vertical Bridgeman method. The spectroscopic properties are investigated based on absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. Judd - Ofelt (JO) analysis is performed to calculate the spontaneous emission probabilities, branching ratio and the radiative lifetimes. The absorption spectrum, emission spectrum and gain cross-section spectra of Tm3+: BSO crystal are determined for the 2 μm transition. Luminescence decay kinetic of3F4upper level was analysed in detail. The continuous-wave 2 μm laser with a maximum output power of 650 mW and a slope efficiency of 29.7% is demonstrated for the first time. The beam quality factor (M2) of Tm3+: BSO laser was about 1.03 at the maximum output level.

Abstract:The Tm3+/Ho3+: SrGdGa3O7 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. The polarized absorption spectra, emission spectra and fluorescence decay curves of the crystal were measured. The crystal exhibited a broad absorption band and a broad emission band, as well as a fluorescence lifetime of 5I7 multiplet of Ho3+ ions up to 8.0ms. End-pumped by a fiber-coupled diode laser at 808nm, the laser operation around 2.0µm has been realized with the a-cut and c-cut crystal samples. The maximum output power is 200mW when a-cut crystal sample was employed.

Abstract:A monoclinic 0.86 at.% Ho3+:MgWO4 crystal is grown by the Top-Seeded-Solution Growth method. Its spectroscopic properties are studied with polarized light for E parallel to a, b, c. The Ho3+ ion transition probabilities are determined within the modified Judd-Ofelt theory (mJ-O) accounting for the configuration interaction. The intensity parameters are Omega 2 = 21.09, Omega 4 = 4.42, Omega 6 = 2.28 [10-20 cm(2)] and alpha = 0.053 [10-4 cm]. The calculated radiative lifetime of the 5I7 state is 6.18 ms. The Stark splitting of the 5I7 and 5I8 multiplets is determined with low-temperature spectroscopy. The absorption, stimulated-emission (SE) and gain cross-sections for the 5I8 <-> 5I7 transition are derived. Ho3+:MgWO4 features a large Stark splitting of the ground-state (380 cm-1), high maximum sigma SE of 1.82 x 10-20 cm(2) at 2.083 mu m, broad gain spectra and high luminescence quantum yield making it suitable for efficient continuous-wave and mode-locked lasers at similar to 2.1 mu m. First laser operation of Ho3+:MgWO4 crystal is demonstrated at 2.104 mu m reaching a slope efficiency of 72%.

Abstract:A Tm,Ho:LuYO3 crystal was grown using the optical floating zone method. The XRD pattern shows that it belongs to the cubic crystal system (Ia‾3 space group). The absorption cross-section at 796 nm is 3.45 × 10−21 cm2, where the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 45 nm. The emission cross-section at 2080 nm is approximately 1.33 × 10−20 cm2. The broad fluorescence band extends to 2200 nm where almost no absorption can be observed. The fluorescence lifetime at 2080 nm is 2.08 ms. The up-conversion fluorescence spectrum and lifetime were also studied. All the results suggest that the Tm,Ho:LuYO3 crystal is a potential tunable and ultra-short laser media operated at ~2.1 μm.

Abstract:Ho3+-doped CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski technique for the first time. The polarized absorption spectra, polarized luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curve of the crystal were investigated at room temperature. The spectroscopic parameters are calculated based on Judd–Ofelt theory, the values of Ω2,4,6 were calculated to be 3.16 × 10−20 cm2, 3.93 × 10−20 cm2, 0.91 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal exhibits strong emission at 2013 nm for π- and 2032 nm for σ-polarizations with stimulated emission cross section of 6.64 × 10−20 cm2 and 1.90 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of the 5I7 level was measured to be 6.60 ms. The continuous-wave (CW) laser operation of Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal around 2 μm was demonstrated.

Abstract:The Yb,Er,Ho∶ GSGG crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method.Its spectroscopic characteristics were investigated.The absorption spectrum in the range of 320-3000 nm were measured.The fluorescence spectrum and lifetime were determined by exciting with 970 nm laser,the emission cross-section was calculated by F-L formula.These parameters were also compared with the Er∶ GSGG and Yb,Er∶ GSGG crystals,suggesting the new Yb,Er,Ho∶ GSGG laser crystal is more suitable to be pumped by LD laser and the 2.79 μm laser output is realized easily with low threshold and high efficiency.

Abstract:30mol% Ho:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYF) and 30mol% Ho, 20mol% Lu:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYLF) crystals with monoclinic phase were prepared by the Bridgman technique. After introducing Lu3+ ions, the thermal property of Ho:BYLF crystal was improved without significantly shortening the I-5(5) level lifetime of Ho3+ ion compared with Ho:BYF crystal. Under laser diode pumping at 889 nm, the emission peaks of both Ho:BYF and Ho:BYLF crystals in the range of 3-5 mu m could be detected. The spectral parameters of the crystal are calculated in detail, and the cross sections of absorption, emission and gain are given. During laser pumping, the two crystals showed low pumping threshold, and Ho:BYF crystal obtained a maximum energy output of 5.22 mJ, while Ho:BYLF crystal tended to be saturated at 1 mJ due to the high concentration of Lu3+ ion. These two crystals show great application potential for laser operating in the mid-infrared range.

Particularly, under 1150 nm Raman fiber laser pumping, a 3.01 mu m CW laser with a maximum power of 181 mW and slope-efficiency of 3.35% is achieved. The M-2 factor of 1.35/1.37 indicates that the yield laser has excellent beam quality. The results reveal that the Ho:YAP crystal possesses great potential for developing efficient 3.0 mu m mid-infrared lasers.

Abstract:We report on the first, to our knowledge, room-temperature continuous-wave laser operation of Tm3+,Ho3+-codoped barium and strontium fluoride crystals at ∼2.1 µm. The 3 at.% Tm, 0.5 at.% Ho:BaF2 laser generated 160 mW at 2073 nm with a slope efficiency of 31.0% and a laser threshold of 43 mW. The continuous wavelength tuning of this laser from 2010 to 2090 nm (tuning range, 80 nm) was demonstrated. The spectroscopic properties of Tm,Ho:SrF2 and Tm,Ho:BaF2 crystals were also determined, showing enhanced Tm3+ → Ho3+ energy transfer in rare-earth clusters. For Ho3+ ions in BaF2, the stimulated-emission cross section is 0.40 × 10-20 cm2 at 2044 nm, and the thermal equilibrium luminescence lifetime is as long as 14.1 ms.

Abstract:Yb3+ and Ho3+ co-doped Lu2.55Y0.45Al5O12 (Yb,Ho:LuYAG) crystal with a size of Φ 28 mm × 120 mm was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The lattice parameters of the as-grown Yb,Ho:LuYAG crystal were obtained by Rietveld refinement with the XRD data. The result of X-ray rocking curve indicated that the grown crystal has a high crystalline quality. From strong absorption band near 935 nm and emission bands within 2700–3000 nm, we found that the Yb3+ ions can be acted as the sensitizer for the activator ions Ho3+. Furthermore, the lifetimes of the 5I6 and 5I7 levels of the Ho3+ ions were 68.25 μs and 7.58 ms, respectively. These results indicated that the Yb,Ho:LuYAG crystal is a promising gain material for 2.91 μm laser pumped by a 940 nm LD.

Abstract:We report on the crystal growth, polarized spectroscopy, and laser operation of monoclinic Tm3+, Na+(Li+) codoped zinc monotungstate (ZnWO4) crystals. The Li+ codoping with an optimized Tm/Li ratio enables almost complete local charge compensation leading to better crystal quality, higher Tm segregation coefficient, and longer luminescence lifetime and ultimately the demonstration of laser operation. The modified Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to calculate the Tm3+ transition probabilities yielding a radiative lifetime of the F-3(4) state of 2.59 ms. The corresponding intensity parameters are Omega(2) = 5.194, Omega(4) = 0.658, Omega(6) = 0.471 [10(-20) cm(2)] and alpha = 0.110 [10(-4) cm]. Tm,Li:ZnWO4 features strongly polarized emission spectra extending beyond 2 mu m owing to a large total Stark splitting of the ground-state, Delta E (H-3(6)) = 644 cm(-1). The stimulated-emission cross-section in this spectral range reaches 0.47 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 2015 nm for light polarization E || N-p. The continuous-wave Tm,Li:ZnWO4 laser generated 282 mW at 1.98 mu m with a slope efficiency of 14.7 %, and laser emission at 2.03 mu m was also achieved.

Abstract:Continuous-wave (cw) laser action around 2 microm in Ho(3+)-doped Lu(2)SiO(5) (LSO) was demonstrated in this paper. Cryogenically cooled by liquid nitrogen, a 10-mm long Tm-sensitized (6% at.) Ho(0.4% at.):LSO produced a maximum output power of 3 W at 2.07 microm for incident diode power of 11 W at 786 nm, and a slope efficiency of 35% with respect to incident pump power. To achieve room-temperature operation of Tm, Ho:LSO laser, a 1-mm long microchip crystal was pumped by a high brightness diode, generating an output power of greater than 80 mW and a slope efficiency of 26% at 2.08 microm. Using a 1.91 microm Tm:YLF laser as an in-band pump source, room-temperature cw operation of singly-doped Ho: Lu(2)SiO(5) laser at 2106 nm was attained with a maximum output power of 2.8 W and a slope efficiency of 35% corresponding to absorbed pump power.

Abstract:Lu2.4Y0.6Al5O12 (LuYAG) crystals with three different doping concentrations of Tm3+ and Ho3+ were grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The crystals exhibit broad absorption band at 783 nm and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) are about 11 nm. Excited by 783 nm laser diode (LD), strong fluorescence peaks are observed near 2.9 mu m, suggesting that the Tie ions can act as the sensitizer for Ho3+ ions. The stimulated emission cross-sections at 2.911 mu m are calculated to be 5.49 x 10(-18) cm(2), 3.11 x 10(-18) cm(2), and 4.04 x 10(-18) cm(2), respectively. Compared with the Tm,Ho:LuAG, and Tm,Ho:YAG crystals, the Tm,Ho:LuYAG crystal with 3 at.% Tm3+ and 1 at.% Ho3+ has a relatively longer lifetime 0.138 ms for the upper level I-5(6) and a shorter lifetime 7.25 ms for the lower level I-5(7), which is advantageous to the population inversion. These results indicate that the Tm,Ho:LuYAG crystal with 3 at.% Tm3+ and 1 at.% Ho3+ is a new potential candidate for realizing the 2.911 mu m laser output. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A Ho³⁺-doped PbF₂ mid-IR laser crystal was successfully grown using the vertical Bridgman method. An intense 2.8 μm emission in Ho:PbF₂ crystal was observed for the first time. By analyzing the absorption and emission measurements of the Ho:PbF₂ crystal with the Judd-Ofelt theory, the intensity parameters Ω(2,4,6), exited state lifetimes, branching ratios, and emission cross-sections were calculated. It is found that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal has high fluorescence branching ratio (20.99%), large emission cross section (1.44×10⁻²⁰ cm²), long fluorescence lifetime (5.4 ms), and high quantum efficiency (88.4%) corresponding to the stimulated emission of Ho³⁺: ⁵I₆→⁵I₇ transition. The structure of Ho:PbF₂ crystal was also analyzed by the Raman spectrum, and it was found that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal possesses low phonon energy of 257 cm⁻¹. We propose that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal may be a promising material for 2.8 μm laser applications.
