Abstract:A molecular metal-crown ether coordination compound, SbBr3 (15-crown-5) (1), has been discovered to undergo an iso-structural phase transition at 233.1 K (T1) and another symmetry-breaking one at 294.5 K (T-2), accompanied by thermal and dielectric anomalies, which were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, dielectric measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses and Raman spectra. The crystal structures determined at 173, 238, and 318 K were solved in P2(1)2(1)2(1), P2(1)2(1)2(1), Pnma, respectively. Structural analyses reveal that both the changes of the crown ether conformation and the displacements of the Sb cation and Br anion lead to the sequential and reversible phase transitions.

Abstract:Two isostructural metal crown ether coordination compounds, (15-crown-5)(BiCl3) 1 and (15-crown-5)(SbCl3) 2, are discovered to show phase transitions above room temperature, where the phase transition temperature relates to the metal center. Compound 1 crystallizes in the chiral orthorhombic space group P212121 in the low temperature phase and undergoes a reversible phase transition around 365 K to crystallize in the polar orthorhombic space group Pna21 in the high temperature phase, accompanied by thermal and dielectric anomalies. The variable-temperature structure analyses of compound 1 show that the phase transition is rooted in the conformational change of the crown ether and the displacement of the Bi cation and Cl anion.

Abstract:The solid structure of the crystalline 1:1 complexes of 18-crown-6 (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclo-octadecane) with 4-ethoxyanilinium perchlorate [1] has been determined at 298 and 93 K, respectively. The measurements of the unit cell parameters versus temperature show that the values of a axis and crystal volume change abruptly and remarkably at similar to 163 K, indicating that this phase character may be a first-order. The crystal structural analysis of both two temperatures shows that in addition to van der Waals' forces, conventional N-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction are the main molecular interactions. The most distinct differences between the structures in room-temperature phase and low-temperature phase are of the twist of molecules viewing along a-axis. DSC measurements further confirm that this inclusion compound undergoes a reversible structural phase transition at about 163 K with a thermal hysteresis of 3.6 K in which relatively large latent heat (H) makes 1 a good candidate for PCMs (phase change materials). As usual, the physical properties, such as dielectric constant and specific heat (C-p), will change a lot near phase transition temperature (T-c). No distinct dielectric constant anomaly was observed in frequency and temperature ranges of 10-1000 kHz and 100-298 K.

Abstract:The excellent properties of host-guest crown ether inclusions in phase transition, dielectric and second-order nonlinear optical properties have attracted much attention. In this paper, we successfully designed and prepared two novel host-guest crown ether supramolecules [(DFBA)(15-crown-5)]X (X = ClO4-, 1; ReO4-, 2) by reactions of 2,6-difluorobenzylamine (DFBA) with 1,4,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane (15-crown-5) in HClO4, or HReO4 aqueous solution. By the introduction of difluoro-substituted benzylamine as a guest cation, the phase transition temperatures are greatly increased to 377 K for 1 and 391 K for 2. More importantly, the space group of 1 has changed from centrosymmetric (CS) P2/c to the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) Pca21 in 2 when substituting perchlorate (ClO4-) with the larger and heavier perrhenate (ReO4-), which leads to 2 showing a switchable and stable second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect. According to the principle of momentum matching between a cation and anion, the perrhenate group increases the energy barrier of the molecular thermal motion, which not only significantly increases the phase transition temperature of 2 but also causes it to be frozen and crystallized in a NCS space group at room temperature. This research demonstrates that a polar molecule can adjust the suitability of anions and cations inside the crystal by practical chemical means.

Abstract:A double-armed crown ether liquid crystal is spread at the air-water interface to form a Langmuir monolayer. The surface Pressure-molecular area isotherms indicate that the monolayer undergoes a phase transition when the surface pressure increases, which, by a molecular model, can be ascribed to a change of molecular conformation. The monolayers are deposited on solid substrates to align liquid crystals before and after the transition, and homogeneous and homeotropic alignments can be produced respectively. This further confirms the phase diagram.

Abstract:The monolayer films of a double-armed crown ether liquid crystal have been prepared under low and high surface pressures, which can produce homogeneous and homeotropic alignments of liquid crystals, respectively. The anchoring transition has been interpreted as the result of a conformation change of the aligning agents. This is the first clear experimental demonstration that a conformation change of aligning molecules can induce an anchoring transition of liquid crystals.

Abstract:1-(Chloromethyl)-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bis(perchlorate), C7H15ClN22+center dot 2ClO(4)(-), was synthesized and separated as colorless block crystals. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements detected that this compound underwent a reversible phase transition at ca. 143.9 K with a hysteresis width of 12.7 K, which was also confirmed by dielectric measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data suggested that the compound may undergo phase transition (170 K) from a room temperature phase with a space group of Pbca (a = 13.585(4) angstrom, b = 12.926(4) angstrom, c = 16.012(5) angstrom, V = 2811.8(16) angstrom(3) and Z = 8) to a low temperature one with a space group of P2(1)/c (a = 12.659(4) angstrom, b = 16.121(5) angstrom, c = 13.197(4) angstrom, beta = 91.231(4)degrees, V = 2692.5(14) angstrom(3) and Z = 8.), and symmetry breaking occurred with an Aizu notation of mmmF2/m. The order-disorder transition of ClO4- anions and the ordering of twisting motions of the dabco ring may drive the phase transition.

Abstract:In this study, a controllable thermo-induced phase transition process was first observed in the aqueous solution of backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched polyethers. According to the variable temperature UV-visible spectrophotometry, the phase transition process was extremely slow as temperature was set around lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Fluorescence tests showed that this slow phase transition behavior was related to the gradual thermally-induced dehydration of hyperbranched polyethers. Based on this unique behavior, the dynamics of phase transition was conveniently investigated by the temperature-jump method. Results showed that the dynamics of phase transition can be described by single exponential functions, and the dynamic parameters depended on temperature. Dynamic laser scattering and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the hyperbranched polyether self-assembled into micelles below its LCST, while the temperature-dependent aggregation occurred and complex micelles with larger size formed above LCST. Furthermore, the gradual aggregation process was in accordance with the rate-limited colloidal aggregation mechanism. Our research can contribute to the clarification of the dynamics and mechanism of this typical gradual phase transition process of backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers, as well as their self-assembly and aggregation mechanisms.

Abstract:This investigation, combining both structural and spectroscopic analyses, sheds light on the intricate relationship between conduction properties and the initiation of dynamic motions within the anhydrous crystalline materials of 18-crown-6·KHSO4 (1) and 18-crown-6·RbHSO4 (2) and proves how the formation of supramolecular complexes is pivotal for inducing solid–solid transitions, leading to superprotonic phases, i.e., crystalline solids exhibiting an enhanced ability to conduct protons, as elucidated through impedance spectroscopic measurements. This multifaceted approach deepens our understanding of the phenomenon and sets the stage for further exploration and application in solid-state protonic conductors.

Abstract:For designing water-soluble responsive materials, utilizing crown ethers as main building blocks has been rarely explored in contrast to their linear poly(ethylene glycol) counterparts. In the current study, we report the robust thermoresponsive properties of the benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) family with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. Different substituent groups on the benzene ring exhibit significant effects on water solubility and thermoresponsiveness. B21C7 and its cyano derivative display LCST phenomena, while B21C7-based carboxylic acid derivative presents UCST followed by LCST phase behavior. Supramolecular interactions with KCl provide an additional tuning approach for this crown ether system. These results demonstrate that B21C7s can serve as an easily accessible toolbox to develop new thermosensitive systems and prepare thermally responsive materials.

Abstract:Crown ethers demonstrate significant conformational flexibility and rotational symmetry, rendering them invaluable in the realms of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. These unique natures facilitate the construction of supramolecular crystals of crown ethers, characterized by disorder‐order phase transitions, imparts unique properties that hold promise for diverse applications across multiple fields. In this study, four supramolecular compounds, namely [Na(15‐crown‐5)]BF4 (1), [Na(18‐crown‐6)]BF4·H2O (2), [K(15‐crown‐5)]BF4 (3) and [K(18‐crown‐6)]BF4·H2O (4) were synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and powder X‐ray diffraction techniques. Herein, 15‐crown‐5 and 18‐crown‐6 correspond to 1,4,7,10,13‐pentaoxacyclopentadecane and 1,4,7,10,13,16‐hexaoxacyclooctadecane, respectively. It was observed that the crystal structure, phase transition, and dielectric properties of these supramolecular compounds are significantly influenced by the size of the crown‐ether rings. The research extensively discussed the correlation between the coordination mode of metal ions of K+ or Na+ with crown ethers, the compatibility between metal ions and crown‐ether rings in terms of size, and the effects of crown‐ether disorder on dielectric permittivity during phase transitions. Our discoveries hold significant implications for the design and development of crown‐ether supramolecular functional materials.

Abstract:Dipropylammonium D-(+)-10-camphorsulfonate (compound 1) was constructed from a mono-component rotator–stator type dipropylammonium cation and D-(+)-10-camphorsulfonate anion and undergoes a phase transition at 205 K. Differential scanning calorimetry curves of 1 present a pair of peaks, which indicate reversible and first-order phase transition characters. Continuous changes in the dielectric constants, but with a slight anomaly near the phase transition point further confirm the occurrence of a phase transition. Single crystal X-ray diffractions illustrate that 1 crystallizes in the polar space group P21 at 130 K and 293 K. Closer inspections reveal that the partially disorder–order transformations of one propyl group in the dipropylammonium cation, as well as a distinct distortion of the terminal ethyl group, induced the structural phase transition. We believe that all these findings would spur the exploration of new structural phase transition compounds.

Abstract:The phase transition temperature was enhanced through anion‐substitution engineering in two novel crown inclusions. Intermolecular interactions and hydrogen bond were used to explain the increase of phase transition temperature. Host‐guest inclusion materials serve as an ideal model for designing phase transition materials. The typical host molecule, 18‐crown‐6 (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16‐hexaoxacyclo‐octadecane), is known for its strong coordination with amino compounds through N−H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen‐bonding interactions, attracting the attention of numerous scientific researchers. This study presented the successful synthesis and characterization of two host‐guest inclusion materials, [(trans‐4‐aminocyclohexanol)(18‐crown‐6)][ClO4] (1) and [(trans‐4‐aminocyclohexanol)(18‐crown‐6)][BF4] (2). Both compounds 1 and 2 underwent reversible phase changes at temperatures of 312 K/305 K and 322 K/314 K, respectively. In this article, crystal structures, thermal properties, optical properties and analyses of intermolecular interactions were discussed in details. Our endeavors are believed to have made a contribution to the advancement of phase change materials.

Abstract:1,4-Diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1-acetate-4-acetic acid forms a complex (1) with chloride ion and water molecule in the ratio 1:1:3. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement shows a pair of reversible peaks at 210.7 K (heating) and 180.3 K (cooling) with a large heat hysteresis about 30.4 K, indicating this compound undergoes a reversible structural phase transition. DSC and dielectric measurements results of its deuterated Dielectric measurement further confirms the phase transition. The compound (2) exhibit obvious change compared to those of 1. The crystal structures of these two compounds, determined at 153 and 298 K, are all monoclinic in P2(1)/n, suggesting the phase transition is isosymmetric. Structural analysis reveals that the changes of the relative location of water molecules and chloride ions affect the formation of different modes of hydrogen-bonded anionic chains, leading to the reversible structural phase transition.

Abstract:The phase transition behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol (BP), and chlorohydroquinone (CH) with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BF) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The copolymer exhibits multiple first order phase transitions, which are associated with crystal-to-smectic liquid crystal transition and smectic liquid crystal-to-isotropic transition. When the cooling rate is low (<10<degrees>C/min), only stable crystal from I is formed. With the cooling rate being high (>20 degreesC/min), the metastable crystal form II is formed, which always coexists with form I. The liquid crystalline phase plays an important role in the formation of metastable phase form II.

Abstract:Here, we study the upper critical solution temperature triggered phase transition of thermally responsive poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate-block-polystyrene nanoassemblies in isopropanol. To gain mechanistic insight into the organic solution-phase dynamics of the upper critical solution temperature polymer, we leverage variable temperature liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy correlated with variable temperature liquid resonant soft X-ray scattering. Heating above the upper critical solution temperature triggers a reduction in particle size and a morphological transition from a spherical core shell particle with a complex, multiphase core to a micelle with a uniform core and Gaussian polymer chains attached to the surface. These correlated solution phase methods, coupled with mass spectral validation and modeling, provide unique insight into these thermoresponsive materials. Moreover, we detail a generalizable workflow for studying complex, solution-phase nanomaterials via correlative methods.
