Abstract:Three molecular-based phase transition compounds, namely, (C5H16N2)BF4Cl (1, C5H16N2 = diprotonated 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine), (C5H16N2)BF4Br (2), and (C5H16N2)BF4NO3 (3), were synthesized and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry and the step-like anomaly of the real part (ε′) of the temperature-dependent dielectric constant revealed that the compounds underwent reversible first-order phase transition with high phase transition temperature under the stimulation of temperature. Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the microcosmic driving force of phase transition was the order–disordered change of the organic cation and spherical anion. Notably, the diprotonated organic cations were charge-balanced by two different anions of the combination BF4 – and Cl–, Br– and NO3 –. Our research paves a new avenue to construct molecular-based phase transition materials with temperature stimulus response.

Abstract:Solid-state phase transition materials with a controllable dielectric response are of great interest owing to their technological importance. In the present work, a new molecular electric-ordered compound, dibenzylammonium trichloroacetate (compound 1), showing switchable and tunable dielectric properties, has been successfully synthesized and grown as bulk crystals. It is found that 1 undergoes a reversible solid-to-solid phase transition at 329 K (Tc), which was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric measurements and variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction. Structural analyses reveal that intermolecular N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds connect the functional groups together and form a chain-like supramolecular architecture along the a-axis. Further, variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction discloses the order–disorder feature of its structural change, which is mainly induced by the disordering of trichloroacetate anions upon gradual heating. Moreover, the dielectric constants of 1 display a step-like anomaly around Tc, suggesting that its dielectric responses could be switched or even tuned by external temperature. It is believed that this finding might provide a possible candidate with controllable dielectric performance for potential application.

Abstract:A novel organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite crystal, [ClC6H4(CH2)2NH3]2CuBr4 (1), having experienced an invertible high-temperature phase transition near Tc (the Curie temperature Tc = 355 K), has been successfully synthesized. The phase-transition characteristics for compound 1 are thoroughly revealed by specific heat capacity (Cp), differential thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry tests, possessing 16 K broad thermal hysteresis. Multiple-temperature powder X-ray diffraction analysis further proves the phase-transition behavior of compound 1. Moreover, compound 1 exhibits a significant steplike dielectric response near Tc, revealing that it can be deemed to be a promising dielectric switching material. The variable-temperature fluorescence experiments show distinct photoluminescence (PL) changes of compound 1. Further investigation and calculation disclose that the fluorescence lifetime of compound 1 can reach as long as 55.46 μs, indicating that it can be a potential PL material. All of these researches contribute a substitutable avenue in the design and construction of neoteric phase-transition compounds combining high Curie temperature and PL properties.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials that exhibit different physical properties in a single phase have potential for use in multifunctional devices. Herein, we reported an organic-inorganic hybrid compound [(18-crown-6)K][Fe(1)Cl(1)4 ]0.5 [Fe(2)Cl(2)4 ]0.5 (1) by incorporating KCl and FeCl3 into a 18-crown-6 molecule, which acts as a host of the six O atoms providing a lone pair of electrons to anchor the guest potassium cation, and [FeCl4 ]- as a counterion for charge balance to construct a complex salt. This salt exhibited a one-step reversible structural transformation giving two separate high and low temperature phases at 373 K, which was confirmed by systematic characterizations including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric, impedance, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Interestingly, the structural transformation was coupled to both hysteretic dielectric phase transition, conductivity switch and magnetic-phase transition at 373 K. This result gives an idea for designing a new type of phase-transition materials harboring technologically important magnetic, conductivity and dielectric properties.

Abstract:With the increasing research on giant dielectric materials, there is growing interest in the development of switching materials with giant dielectric properties. In this study, a novel organic–inorganic hybrid material (Et 3 NC 2 H 4 Br)FeCl 4 was synthesized. It was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), which determined its phase transition temperature ( T C ) to be 362 K. Temperature-dependent dielectric measurements revealed that the material exhibited switchable dielectric properties, with the real part of the dielectric constant exceeding 10 6 at 500 Hz and a dielectric switching ratio surpassing 10 3 . The ratio refers to the ratio between the high dielectric state and the low dielectric state of a step-like dielectric anomaly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis confirmed that the material crystallized in the P 2 1 / c space group with a zero-dimensional structure. The optical bandgap, determined through UV-visible spectroscopy, was calculated to be 2.62 eV. Additionally, analysis using Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots revealed that the predominant intermolecular interactions are H⋯Cl and H⋯H interactions. This study is anticipated to provide insights and hope for the design and application of high-temperature giant dielectric switching materials.

Abstract:Molecular-based ferroelastics with dielectric switching properties are highly desirable for their applications on microelectronic dielectric switches, sensors, data storage, and so on. However, the current reports mostly focus on organic-inorganic hybrids containing toxic heavy metal atoms, and the relatively low phase transition temperature limits their application. In this paper, low-toxic organic salt ferroelastic enantiomers (R/S)-4-fluoro-1-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octonium chloride [(R/S)-F-321] were designed and synthesized under the introducing chirality strategy. They undergo a 432F422-type ferroelastic phase transition with a high Curie temperature (T c) of 470 K, simultaneously exhibiting excellent dielectric switching characteristics. In addition to the ordered-disordered movement of cations, the significant displacement of anions is also responsible for such high T c and large dielectric switching ratios, which is very rare in molecular-based switching materials. This work enriches the development of molecular ferroelastic switching materials and gives inspiration for the exploration of environmentally friendly high T c organic salt ferroelastics with prominent switching performances.

Halogenated carborane molecular ferroelectric crystals with high-temperature phase transition

Abstract:Molecular ferroelectrics possess spontaneous polarization, finding applications in sensors, memory devices, capacitors, among others. However, most of these materials are hybrids of organic and inorganic compounds, and few single-component pure organic ferroelectrics have been reported to have high phase transition temperatures. In this study, employing a quasi-spherical approach, five o -carborane cage molecular ferroelectric derivatives, comprising two B(9)-mono-substituted o -carboranes, B(9)–Br- o -carborane ( 1 ), and B(9)–Cl- o -carborane ( 2 ), along with three B(9,12)-di-substituted o -carboranes, B(9,12)–Br, Cl- o -carborane ( 3 ), B(9,12)–Br 2 - o -carborane ( 4 ), and B(9,12)–Cl 2 - o -carborane ( 5 ) were obtained by halogenation. All five compounds crystallize in the ferroelectric polar point group (2, m , mm 2) and exhibit above-room-temperature ferroelectricity which are confirmed by the ferroelectric hysteresis loops and domain switching. Furthermore, the maximum transition temperature of the dibromosubstituted o -carborane molecule 4 reaches 437 K, which is 160.5 K higher compared to the precursor o -carborane. This finding offers a novel avenue for investigating organic single molecular ferroelectrics with high-temperature phase transition.

Abstract:A novel organic molecular phase transition material, N-isopropylbenzylamine trifluoromethanesulfonate (1), which displays the reversible tunable dielectric behavior, has been successfully assembled by the intermolecular hydrogen-bonds. It undergoes a first-order solid-to-solid state phase transition at 189.7K (Tc), being confirmed by thermal analyses including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), specific heat (Cp) and dielectric measurements. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of 1 exhibit obvious anomalies and slight tunabilities triggered by heating when the temperature increases approaching to Tc. Variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the origin of its phase transition may be ascribed to the order–disorder transformation of trifluoromethanesulfonate anions, together with the slight twisting motions of the isopropyl groups in N-isopropylbenzylammonium cation. All the findings make us believe that 1 might be a potential phase transition material.
Molecular Ferroelectric Piperidine‐4‐ylmethanaminium Perchlorate with Superior Switchable Dielectric Properties

Abstract:A new piperidyl-based molecular ferroelectric piperidine-4-ylmethanaminium perchlorate (compound 1) has been successfully synthesized, which undergoes a reversible phase transition around T-c = 258.8 K. The spontaneous polarization of compound 1 is about 0.63 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field as small as 1.14 kV/cm at 192 K. The variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the space group transforms from a polar space group of P2(1) at 173 K to a centrosymmetric space group of P2(1)2(1)2(1) at 293 K. Especially, the dielectric anomaly at the phase transition temperature increases more than 4 times, which indicates potential applications in switchable dielectric devices.
Near-room-temperature Tunable Dielectric Response Induced by Dual Phase Transitions in a Lead-Free Hybrid: (C3h8n)2sbbr5

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials, which exhibit structural diversity and rich physical properties, have shown great potential as basic device elements in the optoelectronic field. Herein, we report a new lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid compound, [C3H8N](2)SbBr5 (1, where C3H8N+ is the cyclopropylammonium cation), which demonstrates tunable dielectric responses near room temperature, derived from its two successive structural phase transitions at the vicinity of T-1 = 290 K and T-2 = 315 K, respectively. That is, its dielectric constants change from high-dielectric (above T-2), moderate-dielectric (between T-2 and T-1) and low-dielectric states (below T-1). Such dielectric behaviors coincide well with a series of reversible thermal peaks in the DSC curve. Further structural analyses reveal that the order-disorder of organic cationic moieties accounts for the phase transition at T-2, while the change of the molecular configuration provides the driving force to the phase transition at T-1. Such phase transition behaviours differ from those of the majority of previously reported dielectric phase transition materials. Moreover, theoretical calculation of the electronic band structure of 1 reveals the direct feature with a band-gap value of similar to 2.36 eV. This work affords broader design flexibility for the future exploration of electrically-ordered materials in the organic-inorganic hybrid family.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrids with multiple tunable functions are very attractive for potential applications in sensors, smart switches, etc. To investigate the effect of halogen tuning on the properties of hybrid materials, two new multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid compounds [3-hydroxy-azetidinecation]2SbX5 (1: X = Cl; 2: X = Br) are successfully synthesized here by replacing halogen anions. Reversible structural phase transitions accompanied by anomalous changes in dielectric constants are found when heating (T1 = 362 K; T2 = 373 K). Both two compounds have the same space group change from P212121 (Low Temperature Phase) to Pnma (High Temperature Phase). When replacing Cl with Br, the phase transition temperature increases by ca. 10 K and the band gap changes from 3.21 eV to 2.75 eV. Based on the above properties, this work could provide an effective molecular design strategy for the exploration and construction of temperature-tunable, lower bandgap semiconductor hybrid materials.

Abstract:The organic–inorganic hybrid compound, (o-BrAH)[H2Co(CN)6]0.5·(18-crown-6)0.5·H2O, was synthesized and characterized by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, single-crystal diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric measurements. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a three-dimensional cage-like structure formed through the hydrogen bonds of cobalt hexacyanide, supermolecular cations, and water molecules. Temperature variation triggered an abrupt change in the cage structure and simultaneously caused dynamic oscillation of the supramolecules within the framework of [Co(CN)6]3−, inducing a phase transition accompanied by a step-like change in the dielectric physical properties.

High Thermoelectric and Reversible P-N-p Conduction Type Switching Integrated in Dimetal Chalcogenide.

Abstract:The subject of the involved phase transition in solid materials has formed not only the basis of materials technology but also the central issue of solid-state chemistry for centuries. The ability to design and control the required changes in physical properties within phase transition becomes key prerequisite for the modern functionalized materials. Herein, we have experimentally achieved the high thermoelectric performance (ZT value reaches 1.5 at 700 K) and reversible p-n-p semiconducting switching integrated in a dimetal chalcogenide, AgBiSe(2) during the continuous hexagonal-rhombohedral-cubic phase transition. The clear-cut evidences in temperature-dependent positron annihilation and Raman spectra confirmed that the p-n-p switching is derived from the bimetal atoms exchange within phase transition, whereas the full disordering of bimetal atoms after the bimetal exchange results in the high thermoelectric performance. The combination of p-n-p switching and high thermoelectric performance enables the dimetal chalcogenides perfect candidates for novel multifunctional electronic devices. The discovery of bimetal atoms exchange during the phase transition brings novel phenomena with unusual properties which definitely enrich solid-state chemistry and materials science.

Abstract:For organic-inorganic hybrid material, a change of dielectric constant always occurs in phase transition, which can be further controlled by temperature, light, pressure and etc. The design of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a significant dielectric change remains a challenge. Herein, an organic-inorganic hybrid material (TEACCl)2CuBr4 (TEACCl = (CH3CH2)3NCH2Cl+) with a distinct dielectric transition at 315.8 K was designed and constructed. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test proved that there exists a reversible phase change at 315.8 K. Thermogravimetric (TG) measurement proved that it remained stable up to 505 K, exhibiting excellent stability. In addition, the single crystal structure, intermolecular interaction analysis and ultraviolet-vis spectral were discussed in this article.

Abstract:Molecular dielectric switches constitute a type of intelligent materials that are highly coveted for their distinctive advantages of switchable dielectric responses, lightweight, and mechanical flexibility. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites have demonstrated excellent promise for assembling dielectric switches, in which the dynamic motions of organic moieties afford driving force to trigger switchable dielectric phase transition. Here, we successfully assembled a new lead-free hybrid double perovskite, (CHA)4CuBiBr8 (1, CHA = cyclohexylammonium), adopting a typical 2D structural motif, which shows dielectric anisotropy and bistable behaviors during the reversible phase transition near T c = 378 K (the Curie temperature). That is, its dielectric constants could be switched and tuned between high-dielectric and low-dielectric states. Structure analyses reveal that the ordered-disordered transformation of the organic CHA+ moiety and distortion of inorganic framework account for its phase transition. This result will stimulate further exploration of molecular dielectric switches in this 2D environmentally friendly family.

Abstract:The excellent properties of host-guest crown ether inclusions in phase transition, dielectric and second-order nonlinear optical properties have attracted much attention. In this paper, we successfully designed and prepared two novel host-guest crown ether supramolecules [(DFBA)(15-crown-5)]X (X = ClO4-, 1; ReO4-, 2) by reactions of 2,6-difluorobenzylamine (DFBA) with 1,4,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane (15-crown-5) in HClO4, or HReO4 aqueous solution. By the introduction of difluoro-substituted benzylamine as a guest cation, the phase transition temperatures are greatly increased to 377 K for 1 and 391 K for 2. More importantly, the space group of 1 has changed from centrosymmetric (CS) P2/c to the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) Pca21 in 2 when substituting perchlorate (ClO4-) with the larger and heavier perrhenate (ReO4-), which leads to 2 showing a switchable and stable second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect. According to the principle of momentum matching between a cation and anion, the perrhenate group increases the energy barrier of the molecular thermal motion, which not only significantly increases the phase transition temperature of 2 but also causes it to be frozen and crystallized in a NCS space group at room temperature. This research demonstrates that a polar molecule can adjust the suitability of anions and cations inside the crystal by practical chemical means.

Abstract:The reactions of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) and metal chloride in dilute hydrochloric acid yield two four-coordinate complexes, 1 (DMAP+)(FeCl4−) and 2 (DMAP+)2(CoCl42−). The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, temperature-dependent dielectric properties and variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of compound 1 confirmed the reversible isostructural phase transition with the same space group P21/n (No. 14) at 298K and 373K. The temperature-dependent single crystal structural analyses of compound 1 reveal the distinct and synchronous molecular motions of both the cationic and anionic moieties, where the orientational changes of organic cations and the order–disorder transformations of FeCl4− anions are mainly responsible for dielectric properties of compound 1. The variable-temperature structure analyses and the variable-temperature PXRD measurements reveal that compound 2 undergoes a reversible structural phase transition at around 381K. The space groups of compound 2 change from triclinic P-1 in room temperature phase (RTP) to monoclinic C2/c in high temperature phase (HTP), accompanied by thermal and dielectric anomalies.
