Abstract:The paper studies the long-standing open problem of the reduction of Steiner 3designs admitting a block-transitive automorphism group. We prove that if G acts as a point-primitive, block-transitive automorphism group of a nontrivial Steiner 3-design, then G is affine or almost simple.

Abstract:Let 𝒮 be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that G is an automorphism group of 𝒮 . If G acts primitively on both the points and lines of 𝒮 , then it is known that G must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of G is PSL(2,q) with q≥ 4 , then q=9 and 𝒮 is the unique generalized quadrangle of order 2.

Abstract:Let p be a prime larger than 3 and congruent to 3 modulo 4, and let G be the non-abelian group of order p^3 and exponent p. We study the structure of a putative difference set with parameters (p^3,p^3-12,p^3-34) in G which is fixed by a certain element of order p in Aut(G). We then give a construction of skew Hadamard difference set in the group G for each prime p3 that is congruent to 3 modulo 4. This is the first infinite family of non-abelian skew Hadamard difference sets. Finally, we show that the symmetric designs derived from these new difference sets are not isomorphic to the Paley designs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group. Under a mild number-theoretic condition involving the order and dimension of the plane, the translation complement must contain a linear cyclic subgroup that either is transitive or has two equal-sized orbits on the line at infinity. We develop a new approach to the study of such planes by associating them with planar functions and permutation polynomials in the odd order and even order case respectively. In the odd order case, we characterize the Kantor–Suetake family by using Menichetti's classification of generalized twisted fields and Blokhuis, Lavrauw and Ball's classification of rank two commutative semifields. In the even order case, we develop a technique to study permutation polynomials of DO type by quadratic forms and characterize such planes that have dimensions up to four over their kernels.

Abstract:We prove several structural properties of Steiner triple systems (STS) of order 3w+3 that include one or more transversal subdesigns TD(3,w). Using an exhaustive search, we find that there are 2004720 isomorphism classes of STS(21) including a subdesign TD(3,6), or, equivalently, a 6-by-6 latin square.

Abstract:A rank 3 graph is an orbital graph of a rank 3 permutation group of even order. Despite the classification of rank 3 graphs being complete, see, e.g., Chapter 11 of the recent monograph 'Strongly regular graphs' by Brouwer and Van Maldeghem, the full automorphism groups of these graphs (equivalently, the 2-closures of rank 3 groups) have not been explicitly described, though a lot of information on this subject is available. In the present note, we address this problem for the affine rank 3 graphs. We find the automorphism groups for finitely many relatively small graphs and show that modulo known results, this provides the full description of the automorphism groups of the affine rank 3 graphs, thus reducing the general problem to the case when the socle of the automorphism group is nonabelian simple.

Abstract:In this article, we study symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive, point-imprimitive almost simple automorphism groups with socle sporadic simple groups. As a corollary, we present a classification of symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive automorphism group whose socle is a sporadic simple group, and in conclusion, there are exactly seven such designs, one of which admits a point-imprimitive automorphism group and the remaining are point-primitive.

Abstract:In 2003, Tuan showed a finiteness theorem for block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (k(k−1)2+1,k,λ) designs. As a generalization of this result, we consider the block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with v . Let D=(P,B) be a 3- (v,k,λ) design admitting G as a block-transitive point-imprimitive automorphism group, and G preserve a partition C of the points into d imprimitivity classes of size c , here v=wk(k−1)s+1 , s,w are two positive integers with gcd(s,w)=1 and 2w . We prove that, for a given positive integer s , there are only finitely many numbers v such that there exist nontrivial block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with c,d≥3 . Moreover, we obtain the classification for this type of designs when s≤10 .

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for a non-trivial quasi-symmetric $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with two block intersection numbers $x=0$ and $2\leq y\leq10$, if $G\leq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{D})$ is flag-transitive and point-primitive, then $G$ is either of affine type or almost simple type. Moreover, we prove that the socle of $G$ cannot be an alternating group. If the socle of $G$ is a sporadic group, then $\mathcal{D}$ and $G$ must be one of the following: $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(12,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,3$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{11}$, or $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(22,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,2$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{22}$ or $\mathrm{M}_{22}:2$.

Abstract:A Steiner surface is a quadratically parameterizable surface without base points. To make Steiner surfaces more applicable in Computer Aided Geometric Design and Geometric Modeling, this paper discusses implicitization, parameterization and singularity computation of Steiner surfaces using the moving surface technique. For implicitization, we prove that there exist two linearly independent moving planes with total degree one in the parametric variables. From this fact, the implicit equation of a Steiner surface can be expressed as a 3x3 determinant. The inversion formula and singularities for the Steiner surface can also be easily computed from the moving planes. For parameterization, we first compute the singularities of a Steiner surface in implicit form. Based on the singularities, we can find some special moving planes, from which a quadratic parameterization of the Steiner surface can be retrieved.
