Abstract:In this article, we study symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive, point-imprimitive almost simple automorphism groups with socle sporadic simple groups. As a corollary, we present a classification of symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive automorphism group whose socle is a sporadic simple group, and in conclusion, there are exactly seven such designs, one of which admits a point-imprimitive automorphism group and the remaining are point-primitive.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the situation in which the automorphism groups are flag - transitive and the socles are sporadic simple groups in specific types of symmetric designs. Specifically, the paper focuses on the classification problem of these symmetric designs when the automorphism groups are point - imprimitive. ### Background and Motivation A symmetric design is a combinatorial structure, usually represented as \(D=(P, B)\), where \(P\) is the set of points and \(B\) is the set of blocks. Each point appears in exactly \(k\) blocks, and each pair of blocks contains exactly \(\lambda\) common points. If \(2 < k < v- 1\), then \(D\) is called a non - trivial symmetric design. The automorphism group \(G\) is a permutation group that permutes the set of points \(P\), while keeping the set of blocks \(B\) and the incidence relation unchanged. If \(G\) is transitive on all flags (i.e., incidence pairs of points and blocks) of \(D\), then \(G\) is called flag - transitive. ### Research Problems The paper mainly studies the almost - simple automorphism groups \(G\) with sporadic simple groups as socles, and \(G\) is flag - transitive and point - imprimitive for symmetric designs. Specifically, the paper attempts to answer the following questions: 1. **Classification Problem**: Which parameter sets \((v, k, \lambda)\) correspond to the existence of such symmetric designs? 2. **Construction Problem**: How to construct these symmetric designs? ### Main Results The main results of the paper are as follows: - **Theorem 1.1**: Let \(D\) be a non - trivial symmetric design, and its automorphism group \(G\) is flag - transitive and its socle is a sporadic simple group. Then \(G\) is point - imprimitive if and only if the parameter set of \(D\) is \((144, 66, 30)\), and \(G = M_{12}\), the point - stabilizer and the block - stabilizer are both isomorphic to \(\text{PSL}_2(11)\), and they are both the intersections of two non - conjugate maximal subgroups \(M_{11}\). - **Corollary 1.2**: Let \(D\) be a non - trivial symmetric design, and its automorphism group \(G\) is flag - transitive and its socle is a sporadic simple group. Then \(v\in\{144, 176, 14080\}\), and \((D, G)\) (up to isomorphism) are as shown in Table 1. ### Table 1.
