Abstract:Let G be a solvable block transitive automorphism group of a 2-(v, 5, 1) design and suppose that G is not flag transitive. We will prove that (1) if G is point imprimitive, then v = 21, and G ≤ Z 21 : Z 6 ; (2) if G is point primitive, then G ≤ AΓL (1,v) and v = p a , where p is a prime number with p ≡ 21 (mod 40), and a an odd integer.

Abstract:We consider 2-designs which admit a group of automorphisms that is flag-transitive and leaves invariant a chain of nontrivial point-partitions. We build on our recent work on 2-designs which are block-transitive but not necessarily flag-transitive. In particular we use the concept of the "array" of a point subset with respect to the chain of point-partitions; the array describes the distribution of the points in the subset among the classes of each partition. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the array in order for the subset to be a block of such a design. By explicit construction we show that for any , there are infinitely many 2-designs admitting a flag-transitive group that preserves an invariant chain of point-partitions of length s . Moreover an exhaustive computer search, using Magma , seeking designs with points (where each ) and a partition chain of length , produced 57 such flag-transitive designs, among which only three designs arise from our construction—so there is still much to learn.

Abstract:A graph Г is said to be G-locally primitive, where G is a subgroup of automorphisms of Г, if the stabiliser Ga of a vertex α acts primitively on the set Г( α ) of vertices of Г adjacent to α. For a finite non-abelian simple group L and a Cayley subset S of L, suppose that L ⊴ G ⩽ Aut( L), and the Cayley graph Г = Cay ( L, S) is G-locally primitive. In this paper we prove that L is a simple group of Lie type, and either the valency of Г is an add prine divisor of ¦Out(L)¦, orL =PΩ 8 + (q) and Г has valency 4. In either cases, it is proved that the full automorphism group of Г is also almost simple with the same socle L.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for a non-trivial quasi-symmetric $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with two block intersection numbers $x=0$ and $2\leq y\leq10$, if $G\leq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{D})$ is flag-transitive and point-primitive, then $G$ is either of affine type or almost simple type. Moreover, we prove that the socle of $G$ cannot be an alternating group. If the socle of $G$ is a sporadic group, then $\mathcal{D}$ and $G$ must be one of the following: $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(12,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,3$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{11}$, or $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(22,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,2$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{22}$ or $\mathrm{M}_{22}:2$.

Abstract:In 2003, Tuan showed a finiteness theorem for block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (k(k−1)2+1,k,λ) designs. As a generalization of this result, we consider the block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with v . Let D=(P,B) be a 3- (v,k,λ) design admitting G as a block-transitive point-imprimitive automorphism group, and G preserve a partition C of the points into d imprimitivity classes of size c , here v=wk(k−1)s+1 , s,w are two positive integers with gcd(s,w)=1 and 2w . We prove that, for a given positive integer s , there are only finitely many numbers v such that there exist nontrivial block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with c,d≥3 . Moreover, we obtain the classification for this type of designs when s≤10 .

Abstract:More than 30 years ago, Delandtsheer and Doyen showed that the automorphism group of a block-transitive 2-design, with blocks of size k , could leave invariant a nontrivial point-partition, but only if the number of points was bounded in terms of k . Since then examples have been found where there are two nontrivial point partitions, either forming a chain of partitions, or forming a grid structure on the point set. We show, by construction of infinite families of designs, that there is no limit on the length of a chain of invariant point partitions for a block-transitive 2-design. We introduce the notion of an 'array' of a set of points which describes how the set interacts with parts of the various partitions, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the 'array' of a point set, relative to a partition chain, for it to be a block of such a design.

Abstract:We study 2- ( v , k , λ ) designs D = ( P , B ) admitting a flag-transitive automorphism group G, where k = p 2 or p 3 , and p is prime. We prove that if k = p 2 , then G must be point-primitive, and G is of affine or almost simple type except for two examples. If k = p 3 , and G is point-primitive, then G is of affine, almost simple, or product type with G ≤ H ≀ S 2 acting on P = Δ × Δ , where H is a primitive group on Δ. Furthermore, if G is point-imprimitive with a system Σ of imprimitivity consisting of d classes of size c, we determine the parameters ( v , k , μ , c , d ) , where μ is the size of the nonempty set B ∩ C with B ∈ B and C ∈ Σ . Moreover, some infinite families of flag-transitive 2- ( v , p 3 , λ ) designs are also constructed.

On point and block primitive designs invariant under permutation groups

Abstract:In this paper, we present a method for constructing point primitive block transitive $t$-designs invariant under finite groups. Furthermore, we demonstrate that every point and block primitive $G$-invariant design can be generated using this method. Additionally, we establish the theoretical possibility of identifying all block transitive $G$-invariant designs. However, in practice, the feasibility of enumerating all designs for larger groups may be limited by the computational complexity involved.

Abstract:In this article, we study 2-designs with λ=2 admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive almost simple automorphism group G with socle X a finite simple classical group of Lie type. We prove that such a design belongs to an infinite family of 2-designs with parameter set ((3n−1)/2,3,2) and X=PSLn(3) for some n⩾3 , or X=PSL2(q) with point-stabiliser D2(q+1)/gcd⁡(2,q−1) , or it is isomorphic to the 2-design with parameter set (6,3,2) , (7,4,2) , (10,4,2) , (11,5,2) , (28,7,2) , (28,3,2) , (36,6,2) or (126,6,2) .

Abstract:Abstract Let Γ be a finite connected regular graph with vertex set V Γ, and let G be a subgroup of its automorphism group Aut Γ. Then Γ is said to be G-locally primitive if, for each vertex α, the stabilizer G α is primitive on the set of vertices adjacent to α. In this paper we assume that G is an almost simple group with socle soc G = S ; that is, S is a nonabelian simple group and S ⊴ G ≤ Aut S . We study nonbipartite graphs Γ which are G -locally primitive, such that S has trivial centralizer in Aut Γ and S is not semiregular on vertices. We prove that one of the following holds: (i) S ⊴ Aut Γ ≤ Aut( S ), (ii) G Y ≤ Aut Γ with Y almost simple and soc Y ≠ S , or (iii) S belongs to a very restricted family of Lie type simple groups of characteristic p , say, and Aut Γ contains the semidirect product Z d p : G , where Z d p is a known absolutely irreducible G -module. Moreover, in certain circumstances we can guarantee that S ⊴ Aut Γ ≤ Aut( S ). Abstract:We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples arise from affine geometry and the point-line geometry of projective spaces, as well as several sporadic examples.

Abstract:It was shown in 1989 by Delandtsheer and Doyen that, for a $2$-design with $v$ points and block size $k$, a block-transitive group of automorphisms can be point-imprimitive (that is, leave invariant a nontrivial partition of the point set) only if $v$ is small enough relative to $k$. Recently, exploiting a construction of block-transitive point-imprimitive $2$-designs given by Cameron and the last author, four of the authors studied $2$-designs admitting a block-transitive group that preserves a two-dimensional grid structure on the point set. Here we consider the case where there a block-transitive group preserves a multidimensional grid structure on points. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such $2$-designs to exist in terms of the parameters of the grid, and certain `array parameters' which describe a subset of points (which will be a block of the design). Using this criterion, we construct explicit examples of $2$-designs for grids of dimensions three and four, and pose several open questions.

Abstract:For a t-design D(t≥2) transitivity of a group G of automorphisms on the blocks (or lines) of D implies transitivity on points. Delandtsheer and Doyen proved in 1989 that if in addition the group G leaves invariant a non-trivial partition of the v points, that is, G is point-imprimitive, then v is bounded above by ((2k) - 1)2, where k is the block size. Such designs may be 2-designs, or 3-designs, and we discuss a recent proof by Mann and Tuan of a conjecture of Cameron and the author that for a block-transitive, point-imprimitive 3-design, the number v of points is bounded above by (2k) + 1. The subclass of line-transitive pointimprimitive 2-designs that are linear spaces have also received much attention: apart from finite projective planes, there are exactly 469 known examples and they all have one of two sets of parameters: (v, k) = (91,6) or (729, 8). Efforts to obtain restrictions on the parameters and the structure of the group G may lead to new constructions of line-transitive, point-imprimitive linear spaces.

Abstract:The group $PGL(2,q)$ acts $3$-transitively on the projective line $GF(q) \cup \{\infty\}$. Thus, an orbit of its action on the $k$-subsets of the projective line is the block set of a $3$-$(q+1,k,\lambda)$ design. We find the parameters of the designs formed by the orbit of a block of the form $\langle \theta^r \rangle$ or $\langle \theta^r \rangle \cup \{ 0\}$, where $\theta$ is a primitive element of $GF(q)$.
