Abstract:Arsenic (As) removal through microbially driven biovolatilization can be explored as a potential method for As bioremediation. However, its effectiveness needs to be improved. Biostimulation with organic matter amendment and bioaugmentation with the inoculation of genetic engineered bacteria could be potential strategies for As removal and site remediation. Here, the experiments were conducted to evaluate the impacts of rice straw and biochar amendment, inoculation of genetic engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440 (GE P. putida) with high As volatilization activity, on microbial mediated As volatilization and removal from three different arseniferous soils. In general, the addition of rice straw (5%) significantly enhanced As methylation and volatilization in comparison with corresponding non-amended soils. Biochar amendments and inoculation of the GE P. putida increased As methylation and volatilization, respectively, but less than that of rice straw addition. The effectiveness of As volatilizations are quite different in the various paddy soils. The combined amendments of rice straw and GE P. putida exhibited the highest As removal efficiency (483.2 μg/kg/year) in Dayu soil, with 1.2% volatilization of the total As annually. The highest water-soluble As concentration (0.73 mg/kg) in this soil could be responsible for highest As volatilization besides the rice straw and bacteria in this soil.

Abstract:The control and characterization of microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) reaction-mediated soil arsenic mobilization is still not well understood, which has limited the application of biotechnologies for the remediation of contaminated wastes. In this study, we developed an improved soil bioelectrochemical system (BES) that can decrease the dissolution of As-bearing Fe/Al oxides from anoxic submerged soil by more than 80 % under the application of a 0.9 V external voltage. Combining the results of chemical property and microbial characteristic analyses indicated that an applied voltage was accompanied by a dramatic increase in acetate oxidization and soil substrate bioavailability, facilitating electron transfer reactions for methanogenesis, whereas the applied voltage exhibited a negative effect on microbial EET activities for As/Fe reduction. Subsequently, an additional dual-chamber configuration was employed for comparison and to study the effect of bacteria-electrode interactions on arsenic mobilization; we found that the bioanode and biocathode had reverse effects on the release of As/Fe, suggesting a correlation between the disparate microbial communities and EET-mediated reaction mechanisms on the electrodes. Overall, this study is vital to expand the knowledge of the intimate links between arsenic speciation transformation and microbial electron transport system activity, improve our understanding of BES operation and move towards its application.
Removal of Arsenate from Groundwater by Cathode of Bioelectrochemical System Through Microbial Electrosorption, Reduction, and Sulfuration

Abstract:Arsenate [As(V)] is a toxic metalloid and has been observed at high concentrations in groundwater globally. In this study, a bioelectrochemical system (BES) was used to efficiently remove As(V) from groundwater, and the mechanisms involved were systematically investigated. Our results showed that As(V) can be efficiently removed in the BES cathode chamber. When a constant cell current of 30 mA (Icell, volume current density = 66.7 A/m3) was applied, 90 ± 3% of total As was removed at neutral pH (7.20–7.50). However, when Icell was absent, the total As in the effluent, mainly As(V), had increased approximately 2–3 times of the As(V) in influent. In the abiotic control reactor, under the same condition, no significant total As or As(V) removal was observed. These results suggest that As(V) removal was mainly ascribed to microbial electrosorption of As(V) in sludge. Moreover, part of As(V) was bioelectrochemically reduced to As(III), and sulfate was also reduced to sulfides [S(–II)] in sludge. The XANES results revealed that the produced As(III) reacted with S(–II) to form As2S3, and the residual As(III) was microbially electroadsorbed in sludge. This BES-based technology requires no organic or chemical additive and has a high As(V) removal efficiency, making it an environment-friendly technique for the remediation of As-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:Effective purification of arsenic (As)-contaminated soil and water remains an urgent task for mankind. Biochar was applied to remove As due to its low price, easy preparation, and high efficiency. This paper provides the latest analysis of biochar-based materials for arsenic-contaminated water and soil. In this review, different sources of feedstock and modification methods on the performance of biochar and the adsorption capacity of As are compared. The factors such as pH, site conditions, and the coexistence of heavy metals affecting biochar-based materials in arsenic removal are also studied. The As removal mechanisms were mainly inner-complexation/precipitation, ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction, and redox transformation. Finally, this review proposes insights on future development and challenges of biochar, along with the cost, regeneration, and practical application analysis. Results showed that biochar-based materials could be applied for practical applications.

Abstract:Matured sewage sludge compost is a rich source of humic substances (HS) with reduction capacity. To improve the reduction performance of sludge compost and to obtain a mature compost, the effects of moisture content, aeration rate and biochar addition on sludge compost were analyzed. HS with optimal reduction performance was selected for the removal of arsenic (As) in soil to investigate the removal efficiency and environmental risk. The result showed that the aeration rate and the addition of biochar had a significant effect on the total reduction capacity (TRC) of the compost. The compost with a moisture content of 65%, an aeration rate of 0.2 L·min -1 ·kg -1 and biochar addition possessed the highest TRC (2062 μmol/g). A removal efficiency of 25% was obtained by washing As-contaminated soil with extracted HS. There was no effect on the concentration of metals, physicochemical properties and phase composition of the soil after washing with HS. Further EEM studies revealed that quinoid functional groups of HS were involved in the washing process and converted between hydroquinone, benzoquinone and quinone oxide after the reaction. Reducing functional groups separated and released arsenic and iron minerals by reductive dissolution. Recycle experiments showed that HS could be used three times. HS from sewage sludge compost is a green and economical washing agent.

Abstract:The combination of bioleaching and electrokinetic remediation has been proved to be an effective method to remove heavy metals from municipal sewage sludge. The results showed that using electrokinetic remediation for six days after bioleaching for four days, the contents of Cu and Zn in sewage sludge decreased from 296.4mgkg−1 and 3756.2mgkg−1 to 63.4mgkg−1 and 33.3mgkg−1, respectively, which could meet the Chinese standard for land application of the heavy metals in sewage sludge. During the bioleaching process, both the organic sulfide fraction of Cu and the carbonate-bound and organic sulfide fractions of Zn transformed to soluble and ionic fractions which could easily migrate to the electrode zone and then accumulate there, Finally, the soluble and ionic fractions of these heavy metals could be disposed of or recycled expediently at the end of electrokinetic remediation.

Abstract:This study reports the effects of an external voltage (0 V, 0.4 V and 0.9 V) on soil arsenic (As) release and sequestration when amended with organic carbon (NaAc) and inorganic carbon (NaHCO3), respectively, in a soil bioelectrochemistry system (BES). The results demonstrated that although an external voltage had no effect on the As removal capacity in an oligotrophic environment fueled with NaHCO3, 93.6% of As(III) in the supernatant was removed at 0.9 V with an NaAc amendment. Interestingly, the content of As detected on the electrodes was higher than that removed from the supernatant, implying a continuous release of soil As under external voltages and rapid adsorption onto the electrodes, especially the cathode. In addition, the species of As on the cathode were similar to those in the supernatant (the As(III)/As(V) ratio was approximately 3:1), indicating that the removal capacity was independent of preoxidation. From the viewpoint of electroactive microorganisms (EABs), the relative abundances of the arrA gene and Geobacter genus were specifically enriched at the anode, thus signifying stimulation of the reduction and release of soil As in the anode region. By comparison, Bacillus was particularly abundant at the cathode, which could contribute to the oxidation and sequestration of As in the cathode region. Additionally, specific extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) secreted by EABs could combine with As, which was followed by electrostatic attraction to the cathode under the effect of an electric field. Furthermore, the formation of secondary minerals and coprecipitation in the presence of iron (Fe) may have also contributed to As removal from solution. The insights from this study will enable us to further understand the biogeochemical cycle of soil As and to explore the feasibility of in situ As bioremediation techniques, combining the aspects of microbial and physicochemical processes in soil bioelectrochemical systems.
Remediation of As-contaminated Soils Using Citrate Extraction Coupled with Electrochemical Removal.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) pollution of soils poses serious threats to the ecological environment. In this study, organic acid (citrate) washing and electrochemical removal (manganese oxide cathode) were combined to remediate highly As contaminated soils, and the effect of voltage was investigated as well. Citrate could extract the As bound to iron and aluminum oxides and enhance As mobility by indirectly reducing As(V) to As(III) in the soils. During the electrochemical removal of As, the rhodochrosite produced from the reduction of birnessite at the cathode, the birnessite generated from the re-oxidation of released Mn(II) and the ferrihydrite formed from the hydrolysis of Fe(III) at the anode together contributed to the adsorption and fixation of As in the leachate. After three successive rounds of combined remediation by citrate (0.1 mol L-1) washing and electrochemical removal with birnessite electrode at 1.5 V, the As was totally removed in the leachate and the content of As bound to iron and aluminum (hydr)oxides was reduced by 84.2% in soils. Correspondingly, the contents of total and bioavailable As in the soil decreased from 1981.4 and 242.0 to 563.2 and 86.0 mg kg(-1), respectively. The As removal efficiency from the leachate and soil increased with increasing voltage from 0 to 1.5 V. This study provides a new method for the effective treatment of As-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Heavy metal polluted soil remediation is a global concern. Therefore, it is urgently needed to develop new ways for soil remediation. Although the electrochemical method is a simple, efficient, and promising process, the reaction mechanism of arsenic (As) in contaminated soil treated by the electrochemical method is rarely noticed. Herein, electrochemical techniques were developed for As removal from contaminated soil, which can be effectively achieved by using a Fe sacrificial anode to form Fe3+ species and by combining manganese oxide in soils for remediation. The results showed that the As was changed from an unstable to a stable state, and As pollutions were effectively removed by this electrochemical method. Further, the dissolution kinetics of Fe and Mn oxides, arsenic reaction kinetics and the phase transformation process during the remediation process were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) methods. From the simulation experiments, it was found that As(III) should be oxidized by Mn4+ and Fe3+ to form As(V), and As(V) was the main reactant with Fe and Mn oxides for As removal. Consequently, the current work may provide a new insight into solve As contamination in soil, and provide some new insights into the interaction mechanism between multiple components.
Evaluation of water management on arsenic methylation and volatilization in arsenic-contaminated soils strengthened by bioaugmentation and biostimulation

Abstract:Arsenic (As) fate in paddy fields has been one of the most significant current issues due to the strong As accumulation potential of rice plants under flooded conditions. However, no attempt was done to explore As methylation and volatilization under non-flooded conditions. Herein, we investigated the effects of water management on As methylation and volatilization in three arsenic-contaminated soils enhanced by biostimulation with straw-derived organic matter and bioaugmentation with genetic engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440 (GE P. putida). Under flooded conditions, the application of biochar (BC), rice straw (RS) and their combination (BC+RS) increased total As in porewater. However, these effects were greatly attenuated under non-flooded conditions. Compared with RS amendment alone, the combination of GE P. putida and RS further promoted the As methylation and volatilization, and the promotion percentage under non-flooded conditions were significantly higher than that under flooded conditions. The combined GE P. putida and RS showed the highest efficiency in As methylation (88 µg/L) and volatilization (415.4 µg/(kg·year)) in the non-flooded soil with moderate As contamination. Finally, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis presented that methylated As, DOC and pH in porewater were the most important factors contributing to As volatilization. Overall, our findings suggest that combination of bioaugmentation with GE P. putida and biostimulation with RS/BC+RS is a potential strategy for bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils by enhancing As methylation and volatilization under non-flooded conditions.

Abstract:Arsenic pollution in environment has always been an important environmental problem that has attracted wide attention in recent years. Adsorption is one of the main methods of treatment for arsenic in the aqueous solution and soil because of the advantages of high efficiency, low cost and wide application. Firstly, this report summarizes the commonly and widely used adsorbent materials such as metal-organic frameworks, layered bimetallic hydroxides, chitosan, biochar and their derivatives. The adsorption effects and mechanisms of these materials are further discussed, and the application prospects of these adsorbents are considered. Meanwhile, the gaps and deficiencies in the study of adsorption mechanism was pointed out. Then, this study comprehensively evaluated the effects of various factors on arsenic transport, including (i) the effects of pH and redox potential on the existing form of As; (ii) complexation mechanism of dissolved organic matter and As; (iii) factors affecting the plant enrichment of As. Finally, the latest scientific researches on microbial remediation of arsenic and the mechanisms were summarized. The review finally enlightens the subsequent development of more efficient and practical adsorption material.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) contamination is a major threat to drinking water quality throughout the world, and the development of appropriate remediation methods is critical. Adsorption is considered the most effective method for remediation of As-contaminated water. Biochar is a promising adsorbent and widely discussed for As removal due to its potential low cost and environmental friendliness. However, pristine biochar generally exhibited relatively low adsorption capacity for As mainly due to the electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged biochar and As. Biochar modification, especially metal modification, was developed to boost the adsorption capacity for As. A systematic analysis of As removal as affected by biochar properties and modification will be of great help for As removal. This paper presents a comprehensive review on As removal by biochars from different feedstock, preparation procedures, and modification methods, with a major focus on the possible mechanisms of interaction between As and biochar. Biochar derived from sewage sludge exhibited relatively high adsorption capacity for As. Considering energy conservation, biochars prepared at 401–500 °C were more favorable in adsorbing As. Fe-modified biochar was the most popular modified biochar for As remediation due to its low cost and high efficiency. In addition, the limitations of the current studies and future perspectives are presented. The aim of this review is to provide guidance for the preparation of low-cost, environmentally friendly, and high efficiency biochar for the remediation of As-contaminated water.

Enhancing arsenic adsorptions by optimizing Fe-loaded biochar and preliminary application in paddy soil under different water management strategies

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is widely distributed in nature and is a highly toxic element impacting human health through drinking water and rice. In this study, an optimized approach was attempted to improve As adsorption capabilities by combining pre- and post-pyrolysis modification of Fe(oxy)hydroxides to rice husk biochar (FRB), of which the method is rarely addressed in previous studies. Maghemite and goethite were successfully loaded onto biochar, characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) analyzer. The FRB had maximum As(III) and As(V) adsorption capabilities of 7908 and 11,268 mg/kg, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of Fe-modified biochar in the pre-pyrolysis and/or post-pyrolysis process. Adsorption mechanisms for As explored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), XPS analysis mainly included electronic attraction and ligand exchange with hydroxyl groups on the FRB. It was noteworthy that more than half of the As(II) species loaded on FRB were converted into less toxic As(V) species, which could be mediated by the redox-active groups on the biochar. The preliminary application of FRB in soil indicated that it has an effective remediation potential for As-contaminated soil under flooded conditions, while promoted As release under dry conditions. Finding of this study highlighted that the loading of metal oxides onto biochar by combining pre- and post-pyrolysis modification could potentially increase As adsorption capabilities and further help in strategic water management.

Abstract:Arsenic contamination in paddy soils has aroused global concern due to its threats to food security and human health. Biochar modified with different iron materials was prepared for arsenic (As) immobilization in contaminated soils. Soil incubation experiments were carried to investigate the effects of biochar modified with Fe-oxyhydroxy sulfate (Biochar-FeOS), FeCl3 (Biochar-FeCl3), and zero-valent iron (Biochar-Fe) on the pH, NaHCO3-extractable As concentrations, and the As fractions in soils. The scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that iron was successfully loaded onto the surface or embedded into the pores of the biochar. Addition of Biochar-FeOS, Biochar-FeCl3, and Biochar-Fe had no significant effects on the soil pH but significantly decreased the contents of NaHCO3-extractable As in soils by 13.95–30.35%, 10.97–28.39%, and 17.98–35.18%, respectively. Biochar-FeOS, Biochar-FeCl3, and Biochar-Fe treatments decreased the concentrations of non-specifically sorbed and specifically sorbed As fractions in soils, and increased the amorphous and poorly crystalline, hydrated Fe, Al oxide-bound, and residual As fractions. Compared with the other iron-modified biochars, Biochar-FeOS showed the most effective immobilization and has the potential for the remediation of As-contaminated paddy soils.

Abstract:With the development of industry, heavy metal (HM) pollution of soil has become an increasingly serious problem. Using passivators made of industrial by-products to immobilize HMs in contaminated soil is a promising in-situ remediation technology. In this study, the electrolytic manganese slag (EMS) was modified into a passivator (named M-EMS) by ball milling, and the effects of M-EMS on adsorption of As(V) in aquatic samples and on immobilization of As(V) and other HMs in soil samples were investigated under different conditions. Results demonstrated that M-EMS had a maximum As(V) adsorption capacity of 65.3 mg/g in the aquatic samples. Adding M-EMS to the soil reduced the leaching of As (from 657.2 to 319.8 μg/L) and other HMs after 30 d of incubation, reduced the bioavailability of As(V) and improved the quality and microbial activity of the soil. The mechanism for M-EMS to immobilize As in the soil are complex reactions, ion exchange reaction with As and electrostatic adsorption. This work provides new ideas of using waste residue matrix composites for sustainable remediation of Arsenic in the aquatic environment and soil.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is a potentially toxic element (PTE) that causes adverse effects on human health through contamination of soil and groundwater worldwide. Biochar has captured great interest as an amendment for improving soil fertility, immobilizing PTEs, and being a carbon stabilizer. However, unlike other cationic PTEs, pristine biochar has shown unsatisfactory results for soil As immobilization, owing to increased soil pH and accompanying electrostatic repulsion between the biochar surface and As anions. Complex soil conditions due to dynamically variable dissolved organic matter concentration, redox potential, and pH significantly influence the As immobilization capacity of biochar. To overcome the above drawbacks and improve As immobilization performance, recent studies have proposed biochar modification in various ways. This review summarizes the latest studies on modified biochar for As immobilization in soil, focusing on modification methods and performance evaluation. Limitations and perspectives of key biochar modification methods are critically discussed, advancing our understanding of the underpinned science for designing biochar to achieve increased stability for long-term application. The collated information will help environmental policymakers and stakeholders in predicting the benefits and future directions of modified biochar research for the immobilization of As and other PTEs.
The Characterization of Arsenic Biotransformation Microbes in Paddy Soil after Straw Biochar and Straw Amendments.

Abstract:Straw biochar and straw application to paddy soil dramatically altered arsenic (As) biogeochemical cycling in soil-rice system, but it remains unknown how As biotransformation microbes (ABMs) contribute to these processes. In this study, rice pot experiments combining terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis and clone library were performed to characterize ABMs. Through linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) and correlation analysis, results revealed that arrA-harbouring iron-reducing bacteria (e.g., Geobacter and Shewanella) and arsC-harbouring Gammaproteobacteria (e.g., fermentative hydrogen-producing and lignin-degrading microorganisms) potentially mediated arsenate [As(V)] reduction under biochar and straw amendments, respectively. Methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) carrying arsM gene might regulate methylated As concentration in soil-rice system. Network analysis demonstrated that the association among ABMs in rhizosphere was significantly stronger than that in bulk soil. Arsenite [As(III)] methylators carrying arsM gene exhibited much stronger co-occurrence pattern with arsC-harbouring As(V) reducers than with arrA-harbouring As(V) reducers. This study would broaden our insights for the dramatic variation of As biogeochemical cycling in soil-rice system after straw biochar and straw amendments through the activities of ABMs, which could contribute to the safe rice production and high rice yield in As-contaminated fields.
Arsenic immobilization and removal in contaminated soil using zero-valent iron or magnetic biochar amendment followed by dry magnetic separation

Abstract:The potential of using zero-valent iron (ZVI) or a Fe3O4-loaded magnetic biochar to stabilize arsenic (As) in contaminated soil was investigated in the processes of incubation trial, chemical extraction, pot experiments with ryegrass growth. Additionally, a dry magnetic separation technique was applied to verify the possible permanent removal of As from the bulk soil. Results showed the ZVI amendment greatly reduced the As leaching, and the leached concentration became much lower than the Japanese environment standard (10 μg/L) after 180 days of incubation. Contrarily, the magnetic biochar amendment readily increased the As leachability due to the changes in pH, dissolved organic carbon, and soluble P and Si. The ZVI had a greater effect over the magnetic biochar, supported by the significantly reduced As leachability in the combined amendments. Furthermore, results from sequential extraction analysis indicate that both amendments significantly decreased the available As in (NH4)2SO4 and NH4H2PO4 extraction and increased the As bound to amorphous Fe oxides. But ZVI amendment alone performed better than magnetic biochar amendment alone. Plant growth experiment showed that the ZVI amendment enhanced ryegrass growth and significantly increased the ryegrass biomass. However, the magnetic biochar amendment resulted in an adverse effect on the ryegrass root growth, probably due to a marked enhancement of salinity. Meanwhile, the As uptake by ryegrass was significantly reduced in both ZVI and magnetic biochar-amended soils. Results of dry magnetic separation showed that averaged 20% and 25% of total As could be retrieved from ZVI and magnetic biochar amended soil, respectively; and the As bound to amorphous Fe oxides was the main retrieved fraction. This study indicated that ZVI or magnetic biochar could be applied as a promising amendment for reducing (phyto)availability of As in soil, and dry magnetic separation could be served as an alternative option for permanently removing As.
