Abstract:The development of sorbent with low energy penalty and superior capacity is critical and highly desirable for efficient CO2 capture from flue gas. However, the tradeoff between energy penalty and capacity of traditional sorbents greatly limit their practical application. Herein, based on the density functional theory calculation, a pore matching strategy was proposed to synthesize a series of amine-functionalized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 samples (PMAA@ZIF-8) for CO2 physisorption capture. Benefiting from binding energy tuned by van der Waals interaction, the isosteric adsorption heat of tetraethylenepentamine-based PMAA@ZIF-8 can be as low as similar to 34 kJ mol(-1). Moreover, its adsorption capacity, adsorption rate constant and selectivity were 2.5, 1.3 and 4.4 times that of pristine ZIF-8, respectively. The CO2 physisorption mechanism onto tetraethylenepentamine-based PMAA@ZIF-8 was demonstrated by charge analysis, Gibbs free energy change plot, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The pore matching amine-functionalized strategy is first reported for CO2 physisorption, which extends the theory of the CO2 adsorption mechanism.
