Abstract:We report highly versatile gas sensors using polymer film coated optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs). Based on the evanescent wave absorption of the doped acid-base indicator, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microflow cell encapsulated MNFs are used for humidity and NH3 sensing with fast response, high sensitivity and large dynamic range. The compact and flexible sensing scheme shown here may be attractive for fast detection in physical, chemical, and medical applications with high sensitivity and small footprint.
Developed Low-Temperature Anionic 2H-MoS2/Au Sensing Layer Coated Optical Fiber Gas Sensor

Abstract:Carboxyl-functionalized molybdenum disulfide (COOH-MoS2) nanosheets were prepared through a facile low-temperature hydrothermal method. The phase transformation of metallic-1T to 2H-semiconductor COOH-MoS2 nanosheets was conducted through introducing Au thin film on the unclad optical fiber as a sensing layer in a low temperature. The developed structure successfully refined the loss of the semiconducting properties and poor adhesion of COOH-MoS2 on the unclad polymer optical fiber, which provided limited semiconductor potential as the sensing layers on the optical fiber surfaces. The sensing performance of the as-prepared structure was tested for quantitative detection of three different volatile organic carbons (VOCs) of ethanol, propanol, and methanol gases as well as cross-sensitivity to relative humidity. The operating principle was based on intensity variation of the evanescent wave in the sensing region. The response of the proposed sensing system shows maximum response and better linearity (R2 = 0.999) to methanol at room temperature. Finally, the comparative experimental cross-sensitivity to relative humidity and methanol was also studied to evaluate the potential of sensing range.
A selective NH3 gas sensor based on Fe2O3–ZnO nanocomposites at room temperature

Abstract:Gas sensors based on the Fe2O3–ZnO nanocomposites with different compositions of Fe:Zn was prepared by a sol–gel and spin-coating method. Morphology of the Fe2O3–ZnO nanocomposites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD, D/max-rA) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The results of electrical and sensing measurement indicated that the sensor with Fe:Zn=2% exhibited fairly excellent sensitivity and selectivity to NH3 at room temperature. The response and recovery time of the sensor were both less than 20s. Finally, the mechanism for the improvement in the gas sensing properties was discussed.
Carbon monoxide gas sensor based on Co/Ni-MOF-74 coated no-core-fiber Michelson interferometer

Abstract:A Michelson interferometric carbon monoxide (CO) fiber-optic sensor based on Co/Ni-MOF-74 is proposed and fabricated. The bimetallic-ion-coordination MOFs material Co/Ni-MOF-74 was prepared by solvothermal method. Through XRD and XPS characterizations, the results show that Co/Ni-MOF-74 and Ni-MOF-74 have the same crystal structure. Co/Ni-MOF-74 has a good adsorption effect on CO, and it is integrated into the optical fiber sensing structure for CO detection. In the CO concentration range of 0-35 ppm, the sensitivity and linearity are 0.02235 dB/ppm and 0.99936, respectively. The detection limit of the sensor is about 1.99046 ppm. The presented fiber-optic sensor has excellent selectivity, resistance to temperature interference and good time stability, and it is expected to be applied to the detection of trace CO.

Abstract:To take full advantage of lab-on-fiber technologies for gas sensing, we propose a reflective Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) CO2 gas sensor composed of the functional material [polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB)] and a single-mode fiber (SMF)-hollow core capillary (HCC) structure. The theoretical analysis of the FPI cavity mode in the PHMB film is discussed. The experiment results show a maximum sensitivity of 286 pm/ppm in the low-concentration region of 0–1000-ppm detection range and a high sensitivity of 6.88 pm/ppm in the atmosphere CO2 concentration range (200–600 ppm). The response time of the CO2 sensor is about 10 min. Repeated experiments show that the sensor has good sensing stability and a high selectivity for CO2 gas. In addition, the sensitivity of our CO2 sensor is stable to temperature changes. Moreover, the results of monitoring the real in-door atmosphere verify the repeatability and desirable sensing performance of our sensor. This reflective lab-on-fiber CO2 sensor has a concise structure, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more possibilities in various and complex applications.

Abstract:In consideration of the different electron structure-associated physical properties and internal sensing merits of MoS2 and SnO2, this work reports a nanocomposite with unique structure of MoS2 nanosheets dispersed SnO2 nanoparticles. The sensing performance of MoS2/SnO2 sensor toward low concentration CO was investigated at room temperature under the UV light illumination. It was found that MoS2/SnO2 sensor shows improved CO gas response (R ~ 4.97 at 40 ppm CO) compared with pure SnO2 (R ~ 3.27 at 40 ppm CO), which is due to the unique structure and the formation of heterostructure between MoS2 and SnO2. Moreover, the fabricated sensor also exhibits fast response and recovery time (43 s/36 s). The sensor provides a potential platform for monitoring CO gas at room temperature.

Abstract:Formic acid, which is an important volatile organic acid that has been widely used in many fields, is highly corrosive and pungent. The effective detection of formic acid is of great significance for determining the leakage source and monitoring air quality in the industry and the environment. In this work, for the first time, we present the thin films of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) utilized as sensing materials for the detection of formic acid at room temperature. The zirconium-based MOF-802 featured high chemical resistance to water and acid, and the crystalline thin films of MOF-802 grown via the solvothermal method displayed dense packing and uniformity. Remarkably, the sensor fabricated using MOF-802 film showed high selectivity, excellent long-term stability, and reproducibility for detecting formic acid at room temperature. This study suggests that MOF thin films may act as high-performance sensing materials for the detection of formic acid.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have received a great deal of attention for high-performance gas sensing applications. Unfortunately, before their translation to commercial use, several scientific problems remain to be solved. The challenges include poor stability in a humid environment, random deposition manner of MoS2 flakes that makes the process unscalable, and incomplete recovery at room temperature. Herein, we report a strategy for the room-temperature volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor using the optical microfiber sensing technology. We demonstrated well-controlled immobilization of MoS2 nanosheets onto the optical sensing region using the optical deposition technique. The experimental results show that the MoS2-functionalized optical microfiber sensor achieves high selectivity to polar aprotic and nonpolar VOCs. The sensor demonstrated high sensitivity of 0.0195, 0.0143, 0.0072, and 0.0058 nm/ppm to acetone, ethyl acetate, cyclohexane, and IPA, respectively. Finally, the repeatability and complete recovery capabilities of the sensor have also been validated in this work.

Abstract:A fiber-optic acetylene gas sensor based on a microstructured optical fiber Bragg grating (MOFBG) is presented. The microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is specially designed to have a photosensitive core and holey cladding for grating fabrication and gas detection. The micro-holes of the MOF serve as gas cells, in which the acetylene molecules interact with light through the evanescent-waves of guided modes. The MOFBG with a specific period is utilized to not only make the sensor work in reflection mode, but also selectively determine the wavelength and the order of the acting fiber mode for gas sensing. The MOF is prepared by using the well-known stack-and-draw method, and the Bragg gratings are fabricated by using 193-nm laser pulses. Experiments for the use of the MOFBG for acetylene gas detection have been successfully demonstrated.
Synergistic CNFs/CoS2/MoS2 Flexible Films with Unprecedented Selectivity for NO Gas at Room Temperature

Abstract:Recently, room-temperature flexible gas sensors have been widely studied because they can operate without being heated and create low-cost, low-power-consumption devices with long-term stability. Here, by designing the active material composition and structure, we report an electrospun carbon nanofiber (CNF) network grafted by two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets and embedded CoS2 nanoparticles, which serves as a flexible gas sensor for various toxic or hazardous gases working at room temperature. In particular, the CNFs/CoS2/MoS2 hybrid films exhibit very high selectivity toward NO over other gases including NO2 and CH4, with selectivity coefficients (|SNO/SNO2| and |SNO/SCH4|) as high as 43 and 42 (defined as the ratio of responses between two gases). The sensor shows a linear relationship in the gas concentration range of 1-100 ppm and a stable response during repeated bending. Theoretical calculations suggest that MoS2 can be selectively n-doped by NO, while CoS2 can effectively capture NO molecules, leading to enhanced selectivity and sensitivity. Our large-area flexible sensors made by synergistic design have potential applications in biological and environmental areas for low-cost, selective detection of toxic or targeted gases.
Ultra-high Sensitivity D-type Photonic Crystal Fiber Sensor Deposited with MoO2 Nanofilm

Abstract:Fiber optic sensing technology has extensive applications in many fields and demands high sensitivity and cost-effectiveness for sensors. In this study, we propose an ultra-high sensitivity D-type photonic crystal fiber sensor based on MoO2 nano-film coating to meet this requirement. Firstly, MoO2 is selected as the plasmonic excitation material. Compared to expensive metals such as Au and Ag, MoO2 has the characteristics of low cost and charge carrier density, which is suitable for use in optical fiber sensing modules. The sensitivity of the sensor to the external environment can be increased by coating the surface of the optical fiber with MoO2 nano-film. Then, we use the finite element method to evaluate the performance of the sensor. Numerical simulation results show that the average wavelength sensitivity of the sensor in the x-polarization direction is as high as 24000 nm/RIU when analyzing substances with refractive indices ranging from 1.38 to 1.43. This means that the sensor has a very sensitive response to refractive index changes and can be widely applied to sensing needs in different fields. Overall, the D-type photonic crystal fiber sensor based on MoO2 nanofilm coating has enormous potential for applications. This sensor can achieve high-sensitivity detection within a specified range of refractive indices, providing new ideas and methods for research and applications in the field of fiber sensing.
Highly sensitive and recoverable room-temperature NO<sub>2</sub> gas detection realized by 2D/0D MoS<sub>2</sub>/ZnS heterostructures with synergistic effects

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received emerging attention due to their rich active sites, layered structure, and suitable electronic structure for gas sensing at room temperature (25 degrees C). However, the sensitivity, recoverability, stability and selectivity of TMDs-based gas sensors have remained a grand challenge. Herein, a novel 2D/0D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based gas sensor was rationally designed via a two-step solution process, enabling high-performance detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas at room temperature. Specifically, the MoS2/ZnS heterostructures manifest a greatly enhanced response performance (S = 7.2) to 5 ppm NO2 in comparison with the bare MoS2 nanosheets. The gas sensor can be completely recovered after re-exposing to the air for 4.6 min at room temperature without using any external auxiliary treatments. Our optimized gas sensor not only exhibits an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection (14 ppb), but also shows an ultrahigh selectivity and outstanding stability. We further showed that the greatly enhanced gas sensing performance of 2D/0D MoS2/ZnS can be ascribed to the unique structure as well as the synergistic effects between MoS2 nanosheets and ZnS nanoparticles from the geometrical, charge transfer, equivalent resistance, and chemical aspects. This work provides a promising approach to the fabrication of high-performance gas sensing materials for environmental monitoring at room temperature.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) material is a good carbon monoxide (CO) storage material. This paper proposed a composite optical fiber structure based on spiral fiber grating (SFG) and tapered microfiber (TMF), which can realize the simultaneous sensing of CO concentration and temperature by coating different functional films. The refractive index (RI) of Ni-MOF-74 coated on tapered microfiber can be changed by absorbing CO molecules. The thermal expansion of Ultraviolet (UV) glue will change the period of the spiral fiber grating. Based on the above mechanism, the research shows that the CO sensitivity of the optical microfiber can reach 64.11 pm/ppm, and the temperature sensitivity is −30.1 pm/°C. The temperature sensitivity of the spiral fiber grating can reach 294 pm/°C, which can effectively compensate for the temperature sensitivity of the microfiber. This composite structure has a good application prospect in accurate CO gas concentration measurement.

Abstract:As a typical metal oxide semiconductor, ZnO has been investigated deeply for the application of gas sensing materials. In this study, an ultrahigh sensitive and selective NO2 gas sensor based on porous ZnO nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was reported. The MOF-derivatives were obtained by precisely control of the subsequent pyrolysis process. The sensitivity of MOF-derivatives toward 1 ppm NO2 at 200 degrees C was 51.41 under 500 degrees C pyrolysis treatment. Compared with similar work, the sensitivity has been greatly improved. Furthermore, the fabricated gas sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity to NO2 over other gases (CO, C2H5OH, H2, H2S, NO, NH3). The ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity were attributed to the unique structure after pyrolysis, which provides more exposed active sites and connected pore channels.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity ammonia gas sensor based on molybdenum disulfide/zinc oxide (MoS2/ZnO) nanocomposite film was reported in this paper. The multilayered film of MoS2/ZnO was fabricated on a PCB substrate with interdigital electrodes (IDE) via layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The surface morphology, nanostructure and elemental composition of the MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite were described by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that ZnO and MoS2 had good contact in terms of electric and structure. Ammonia-sensing properties of the sensor were investigated by exposing it to various concentrations of ammonia at room temperature. The experimental results revealed that the MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite film sensor exhibited ultra-high sensitivity, good repeatability, excellent stability, outstanding selectivity and fast response/recovery characteristics. Moreover, the sensing device exhibited significantly enhancement in ammonia gas sensing compared to the drop-casted pure ZnO and layer-by-layer self-assembled MoS2/polymer sensors. These results render the MoS2/ZnO nanocomposite a promising candidate for high-performance ammonia sensing at room temperature. The underlying sensing mechanisms of the MoS2/ZnO sensing device towards ammonia gas were ascribed to the excellent electrochemical properties and special nanostructure of the nanocomposite.

Highly Enhanced Gas Sensing Performance Using a 1T/2H Heterophase MoS2 Field-Effect Transistor at Room Temperature.

Abstract:Monolayer MoS2 (ML-MoS2) with various polymorphic phases attracts growing interests for device applications in recent years. Herein, a field-effect transistor (FET) gas sensor is developed on the basis of monolayer MoS2 with a heterophase of a 1T metallic phase and a 2H semiconducting phase. Lithium-exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets own a monolayer structure with rich active sites for gas adsorption. With thermal annealing from 50 to 300 °C, the initial lithium-exfoliated 1T-phase MoS2 gradually transforms into the 2H phase, during which the 1T and 2H heterophases can be modulated. The 1T/2H heterophase MoS2 shows p-type semiconducting properties and prominent adsorption capability for NO2 molecules. The highest response is observed for 100 °C annealed MoS2 of a 40% 1T phase and a 60% 2H phase, which shows a sensitivity up to 25% toward 2 ppm NO2 at room temperature in a very short time (10 s) and a lower limit of detection down to 25 ppb. This study demonstrates that the gas detection capability of ML-MoS2 could be boosted with the heterophase construction, which brings new insights into transition-metal dichalcogenide gas sensors.

Abstract:Few-layer MoS2 with exceptional physical and chemical properties has attracted notable attention for next-generation gas sensors. The layer-dependent sensing performance for detecting NO2 based on MoS2 is not fully understood. Here, we report the direct synthesis of high-crystallinity uniform few-layer MoS2 via chemical vapor deposition. The influence of layer thickness on the NO2-sensing performance is evaluated. We show that, as compared to the monolayer and trilayer counterparts, the bilayer MoS2 presents the best sensitivity at room temperature. Further density functional theory calculations reveal that the bilayer MoS2 with an AA stacking sequence is more favorable for the physisorption of NO2 molecules due to the more negative adsorption energy, facilitating charge transfer during the NO2 adsorption and thus increasing the electrical response of the gas sensors. This work provides a basic understanding of layer-dependent gas-sensing performance and serves as a reference for designing room-temperature gas sensors for low power consumption and reliable responsivity.

Design of Hetero-Nanostructures on MoS2 Nanosheets To Boost NO2 Room-Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a promising gas-sensing material, has gained intense interest because of its large surface-to-volume ratio, air stability, and various active sites for functionalization. However, MoS2-based gas sensors still suffer from low sensitivity, slow response, and weak recovery at room temperature, especially for NO2. Fabrication of heterostructures may be an effective way to modulate the intrinsic electronic properties of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs), thereby achieving high sensitivity and excellent recovery properties. In this work, we design a novel p-n hetero-nanostructure on MoS2 NSs using interface engineering via a simple wet chemical method. After surface modification with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure is endowed with an excellent response (5 ppm nitrogen dioxide, 3050%), which is 11 times greater than that of pure MoS2 NSs. To the best of our knowledge, such a response value is much higher than the response values reported for MoS2 gas sensors. Moreover, the fabricated hetero-nanostructure also improves recoverability to more than 90%, which is rare for room-temperature gas sensors. Our optimal sensor also possesses the characteristics of an ultrafast response time of 40 s, a reliable long-term stability within 10 weeks, an excellent selectivity, and a low detection concentration of 50 ppb. The enhanced sensing performances of the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure can be ascribed to unique 2D/0D hetero-nanostructures, synergistic effects, and p-n heterojunctions between ZnO NPs and MoS2 NSs. Such achievements of MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure sensors imply that it is possible to use this novel nanostructure in ultrasensitive sensor applications.

Abstract:Achieving high sensitivity in detecting trace concentrations of toxic gases, particularly under room temperature (RT) conditions, remains a significant challenge. Herein, a 0D-2D heterostructure that can detect ppb-level H 2 S at RT is proposed by self-assembling cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Co-MOFs with high specific surface areas can capture and concentrate target gas molecules, enhancing host-guest interactions and thereby boosting the selectivity and sensitivity. MXene nanosheets with high conductivity enable rapid electron transport at heterointerface, hence efficiently accelerating the reaction kinetics. Thereby, the as-prepared chemiresistive gas sensor based on Co-MOF@MXene 0D–2D heterostructure possessed excellent sensitivity against interfering gases and delivered an excellent response value of 11.1 to 400 ppb H 2 S at RT. The judicious design of MOF@MXene heterostructure may spur advanced hybrid material systems for superior sensing applications.

Abstract:The development of a highly efficient sensor capable of detecting formic acid is crucial for monitoring air quality and determining the leakage because of the strong corrosivity and pungency. In this work, we present the superiority of a proton conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) thin film as a sensing material for highly efficient detection of formic acid at room temperature. Specifically, MOF-801, a zirconium-based MOF, exhibits exceptional chemical stability and inherent proton conduction, along with a significant surface area and high porosity. Through the solvothermal synthetic method, highly uniform and densely packed thin films of MOF-801 are successfully fabricated on glass substrates. The resulting sensor, based on MOF-801 thin films, displays exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and durability for detecting formic acid at room temperature, outperforming both other MOFs based sensors and the traditional metal-oxide-based sensors that operate at high temperatures.
