Abstract:A new passive seismic response control device called cable-sliding friction aseismic bearing (CSFAB) has been developed, fabricated, and tested by the authors and shown to be capable of restricting superstructure displacement under permitted magnitude via a purely mechanical mechanism, thus representing a new solution of seismic controlling design. The CSFAB is a combination of friction bearing and some slacked elastic steel wires. Under small ground motions, the CSFABs act as traditional friction isolation bearings, while under moderate or strong ground motions, cables act as safety restrainers to prevent excessive displacement of the superstructure, and thus avoiding unseating and even collapse. In this paper, a numerical study alongside the shaking table test is presented to verify the performance of a seismically-isolated multi-span extradosed bridge model. The results showed that while implemented with Cable-Sliding Friction Aseismic Bearings instead of traditional friction bearings, damage was concentrated in the plastic regions of the columns in the pier fitted with CSFABs and that the pier cap and the superstructure remained elastic, leaving other components elastic as well. But fortunately, displacement of the girder was effectively controlled.
