Abstract:Drawing on the effect of self-phase modulation (SPM), a novel fiber-based temperature sensor of high sensitivity, high resolution and strong mechanical property was presented in this work by using a polydimethylsiloxane-coated single-mode fiber (SMF) with a tapered structure. The tapering not only increased the nonlinearity and generated SPM at a low power threshold, but also increased the sensor's contact with the external sensing environment. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating layer not only modified the group velocity dispersion (GVD), but also was used as the protection of the fiber-sensing probe, effectively enhancing the robustness of the sensor. The 3-dB bandwidth, the output spectra at 320 mW and 1050 nm, was detected when the temperature changed from 55 째C to 75 째C. The high temperature sensitivity of -1.886 nm/째C with a resolution of 0.011 째C was achieved. Both theoretically and experimentally, variations in average pump power were used to investigate the suggested sensor's sensing capability, where the sensitivity rises in proportion to the average pump power. Our study provided a new method to improve the sensing performance of nonlinearity-based temperature sensors, which can lead to a ground-breaking and innovative fibered temperature sensor for widely adapting to a diverse set of applications.
