Abstract:We report a fluorescence “turn-on” method to detect the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. This method works well for both cationic and anionic surfactants. It employs an unprecedented mechanism (aggregation-induced emission, or AIE) to determine the CMC values, and the results are consistent with the data obtained by the classical techniques. In addition, this method renders the convenient detection of the CMC values. Any large and professional instruments are unnecessary, instead, a portable UV lamp and an ultrasonic generator are enough to carry out the detection in an ordinary laboratory. Considering that micelles are interesting entities and have found applications in many important fields such as emulsion polymerization, template of nanosized materials synthesis, controllable drug delivery and macromolecular self-assembling. Our experimental results may offer a facile, sensitive and promising method to detect the formation of micelles constructed by the new amphiphilic molecules and macromolecules.

Abstract:Critical micelle concentration (CMC) is one of the essential parameters for surfactants. To accurately measure this value, we prepared a new type of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) based on a solvothermal method of N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine. This CPD exhibits significant fluorescence enhancement (600×) in various surfactant-contained solutions relative to its aqueous solution due to the charge transfer (CT) effect. It also shows a fluorescence change performance in different concentrations of surfactants, allowing a fluorescence measurement for CMC. Its responsive mechanism was discussed by the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield results. Compared to the previously reported CMC probes, our developed CPD-based probe has merits in simple preparation, low cost, high availability, and easy use. This study utilized the CT feature of carbon material and widened the applications of CPDs for practical detection purposes.

Abstract:The critical micelle concentration (CMC) is an important parameter of widely used surfactants and needs to be measured in the application and development of surfactants. Fluorometric method is a widely used method determining CMC values owing to the advantages of highly sensitivity, fast response and wide application range. There are two common methods (I and II) of preparing samples for CMC fluorometric determination. In the process of developing CMC probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, we found that methods I and II were not suitable for CMC probes with AIE charateristics and developed a new sample preparation method (III), which is not only suitable for CMC probes with AIE characteristic but also decreases operation procedures and errors owing to omitting the addition of micro amount of dyes into each sample. To ascertain if method III is also suitable for other CMC probes without AIE characteristics, the CMC values of surfactants were determined by fluorometric method using widely used pyrene without AIE charateristic as probe and methods I–III to prepare samples. The obtained experimental results proved that method III not only was suitable for preparation of samples for CMC determination of surfactants using pyrene as probe but also led to the least average deviation (methods I–III led to ±0.13, ±0.34 and ±0.05 mM deviation for the CMC determination of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), respectively). The CMC determination using pyrene as probe is based on its change in the ratio ( I FIII / I FI ) of its emission peaks I and III with surfactant concentration. Unexpectedly, it was found that the I FIII / I FI value of pyrene in surfactant solutions is sensitive to the measurement conditions changing exciting light energy, such as slit widths and sample-measured number. In addition, it was found that surfactant SDS or cetrimonium bromide from different suppliers not only has significantly different CMC values but also leads to very different I FIII / I FI values of pyrene in a certain concentration of surfactant, which can be used as a simple method to distinguish the same surfactant with different CMC values.

Abstract:AbstractProbing the onset of micellization, or determining the critical micelle concentration (CMC), is of crucial importance while remains to be challenged by growing demand for extraordinary sensitivity and accuracy. Although fluorometry has attracted wide attention owing to its superiority in simplicity and sensitivity over other methods, the presence and fluctuation of background fluorescence of conventional fluorescent probes undermine the accuracy of CMC determination. Herein, a series of novel fluorescent probes without background fluorescence at a concentration below CMC owing to absolute aggregation‐caused quenching (aACQ) are utilized for sensitive and accurate measurement of CMC. The aACQ probes aggregate spontaneously and instantly in an aqueous environment owing to molecular π–π stacking with fluorescence quenching absolutely. Therefore, the absence of background fluorescence at a concentration below CMC clears relevant interference associated with conventional fluorophores. In this study, the new method is applied for versatile surfactants with CMCs ranging from nanomolar to millimolar concentrations, especially copolymers with ultralow CMC. The higher sensitivity and accuracy are highlighted by comparison with conventional probes.

Abstract:A rapid, high throughput and sensitive method was presented for automated determination of cationic surfactants in environmental water samples. The method was based on an automated analysis platform that was composed of on-line polymer monolith microextraction (PMME) and high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrum (HPLC–MS) with an autosampler. A poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) (MAA-co-EDMA) monolith was selected as the sorbent for purification and enrichment of cationic surfactants in environmental water samples while a new mixed-mode chromatographic column packed with octyl and sulfonic acid co-bonded silica (OSS) was employed for separation and quantitative determination of cationic surfactants in water samples. By integrating sample preparation, chromatographic separation and MS detection into one automated platform, it makes the whole analysis procedure simple, accurate, and time and labor-saving. Several parameters affecting the extraction performance were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method was applied to the analysis of seven cationic surfactants in environmental water samples. Good linearities were obtained for all cationic surfactants with R2 larger than 0.9895. The limits of detection were found to be in the range of 15–24ng/L. The method recoveries of the cationic surfactants spiked in water samples were from 80.5% to 115.1%, with relative standard deviations less than 12.4%.
Detecting the Micellization of Anionic Surfactants by a Colorimetric and Fluorescent Probe Based on Electrostatic Attraction

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe labeled with cation, N-n-alkyl-4-(1-methylpiperazine)-1,8-naphthalimide iodide ([C(8)ndi]I), has been applied as a colorimetric and fluorometric probe for detecting the micellization of anionic surfactants. The critical micellization concentration (cmc) of anionic surfactants can be conveniently determined by the change on absorption and fluorescence spectra of [C(8)ndi]I. The probe displays highly sensitive and selective spectroscopic responses accompanied with distinctive color change (from colorless to light green). These methods are proved to be reliable as the results are in accordance with those of the standard methods. Besides the advantage of visual detection, the multiple spectroscopic methods (absorption and fluorescence) by using [C(8)ndi]I as probe are also simple and convenient. One can choose any spectroscopic parameter, such as position or intensity of the absorption and emission peaks, to monitor the micelle formation process of anionic surfactants.

Abstract:The critical micelle concentration (CMC) is one main parameter of surfactants, so an accurate, rapid, and convenient method for CMC determination is of great significance for surfactant applications. In this paper, three samples of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with different fluorescence properties were developed as fluorescent probes for the CMC determination of CTAB, SDS, Triton X-100, perfluoro OBS and Pluronics® P-123. The fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of a constant amount of the CQDs in different concentrations of the surfactant solution were recorded, and then the CMC values of the surfactant were deduced from the fluorescence intensity change and the Stokes shift variation. The obtained CMC data using three samples of the CQDs agree well with those in the published literature. It is also demonstrated that in the micellization process the interaction between the CQDs and the surfactant molecules is complicated, because the fluorescence properties of the CQDs are found to be related to the characteristics of the CQDs, the head group type of ionic surfactants, the chemical structure between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic segment, and the chemical nature of the hydrophobic chains of the surfactants. So, the CQDs are demonstrated to be located at the palisade layer in the surfactant micelles due to the surface-attached polar groups on the CQDs although the CQDs are mainly hydrophobic as fluorescent probes. The fluorescent CQDs are considered to be new choices of the fluorescent probes in the facile CMC measurement of the surfactants.

Abstract:A new method for determining the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of anionic surfactants by ligand exchange-micellar electrokinetic chromatography (LE-MEKC) has been developed. In the separation of amino acid enantiomers by LE-MEKC using a copper complex with l-hydroxyproline as a chiral selector, it has been noted that the addition of anionic surfactants to the electrolyte causes the reversal of the enantiomer migration order EMO. The point of reversal is correlated with the CMC. Resolution (Rs) decreases with the addition of surfactant below the CMC and increases above the CMC. The inflection point at which Rs equals zero was used for the calculation of the CMC. Based on this fact, the CMCs of anionic surfactants sodium n-decyl sulphate, sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium n-tetradecyl sulphate in 25 mM CuSO4, 50 mM l-hydroxyproline at pH 4 have been determined. The CMCs in the presence of 2.5% acetonitrile were also determined. Results show that the CMCs of anionic surfactants increased with the addition of acetonitrile.
Rapid determination of surfactant critical micelle concentration in aqueous solutions using fiber-optic refractive index sensing

Abstract:We describe a simple and rapid method for determining the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants from fiber-optic measurements of refractive index. The refractive index of an aqueous surfactant solution was monitored as the surfactant concentration was increased using an automated dispensing system. On reaching the surfactant’s CMC value, an abrupt change was observed in the rate of increase of the refractive index with increasing concentration. The measurement system provides rapid semiautomatic data collection and analysis, increasing the precision, sensitivity, and range of applicability of the technique while substantially decreasing the amount of manual intervention required. Measurements of CMC for sodium dodecyl sulfate (8.10mM), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (1.58mM), and Triton X-100 (0.21mM) were in excellent agreement with values previously reported in the literature. The method is applicable to cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants, and it offers a facile, in situ, and sensitive means of detecting micelle formation over a broad range of CMC values larger than 10−1mM.

Abstract:The fluorescence behavior of two near-infrared (NIR) chromophores with linear alkyl chains of different lengths, 2-[4'chloro-7'(3"ethyl-2"benzothiazolinylidene)-3',5'-(1''',3'''-propanediyl)-1',3',5'-heptantriene-1'-yl]-3-ethylbenzothiazolium iodide (Probe I) and 2-[4'chloro-7'(3"hexadecyl-2"benzothiazolinylidene)-3',5'-(1''',3'''-propanediyl)-1',3',5'-heptantriene-1'-yl]-3-ethylbenzothiazolium iodide (Probe II), in aqueous solution containing different concentrations of surfactants was studied. The fluorescence of the probe with a short chain (probe I) was completely quenched in water and aqueous solution containing a low concentration (below the critical micelle concentration, CMC) of surfactant Triton X-100. However, the fluorescence reappeared and reached maximum rapidly once the concentration of the surfactant approached the CMC. The probe with a long chain (probe II) displayed a similar fluorescence behavior but more dramatically fluorescent recovery in Triton X-100 system, which gave a direct indication for the micelle forming process and provided a simple method for the determination of the critical rnicelle concentration of the surfactant. The CMC values determined by this method were in good agreement with those obtained by other techniques. The fluorescence behavior of the two probes in other surfactant systems was also investigated.
An induction current method for determining the critical micelle concentration and the polarity of surfactants

Abstract:A novel and simple method of determining both the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and polarities of ionic surfactants at the same time is presented in this paper. This method is based on the dependence of electrical potential at the liquid-air interface on the aggregation of the surfactant. When the measuring electrode contacts the liquid-air interface, the difference between the electrical potential of the electrode surface and the electrical potential of the liquid-air interface generates an electrical current through an electrical circuit. The dependences of the magnitudes of the measured signals on the concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were measured. The results show that the magnitude of the measured signal increases with the increasing surfactant concentration before it reaches to the CMC. The signal magnitude remains constant after the CMC. The value of CMC can be determined from the intersection point of the two lines before and after CMC. The CMC values calculated with this method are in good agreement with those reported in the reference papers. The experimental results also show that the directions of the signals generated by anionic and cationic surfactants are in opposite direction, which can be used to determine the polarities of the surfactants. The method described in this paper provides a simple and reliable tool to determine the CMC value and the polarity of ionic surfactants.

Abstract:A novel method for the determination of surfactant critical micelle concentration (cmc), based on the fiber refractive index sensor principle was studied. The cmc of a representative anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cmc of a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were found to be 8.05×10-3 and 9.11×10-4 mol· L-1 respectively at 25 ° using this method, which are in good agreement with literature values. Further determinations of surfactant cmc under various conditions show that the influence of temperature and the inorganic salt NaCl on the accuracy of the method is slight. Therefore, the applicability of the method is proven. We also tested the repeatability and stability of this method. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the measurement results was 0.17%, which is consistent with our expectation. © Editorial office of Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica.

Abstract:A new light scattering technology is shown for study of the chemical character of a surfactant system. The resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) intensities of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) aqueous solution in a series of concentration were measured directly by a RRS technology without any probe. The first and second CMC of CTAB aqueous solution are obtained from the intensity of RRS vs concentration of CTAB curve, which are 8.9 X 10(-4) and 2.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1. These determination results are in correspondence with the results reported. Therefore, this method is very convenient, rapid and accurate and can be used as a new technology for the determination of CMC values of surfactants.

Abstract:Surfactants play important roles in chemical industries and have become well-known environmental pollutants owing to their extensive use in different fields. In this work, we reported a fluorescent probe, namely, BDP-Zn2+ for the discrimination of four kinds of surfactants and the determination of CMC values. BDP-Zn2+ was composed of covalently linked BODIPY, carbazole, N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (BPEA) and zinc ions to fabricate a novel push-pull molecular structure. Upon the addition of surfactants, the probe exhibited a turn-on fluorescence response and the emission was enhanced on increasing the surfactant concentrations. This indicated that the fluorescence intensity and the ratios of the emission at 607 nm to that at 514 nm as fingerprints could be used to identify the CMC values of the surfactants. Our current work provides an alternative method to efficiently discriminate different surfactants for the further studies of their physical and chemical functions.
Quantifying the Critical Micelle Concentration of Nonionic and Ionic Surfactants by Self-Consistent Field Theory

Abstract:Quantifying the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and understanding its relationship with both the intrinsic molecular structures and environmental conditions are crucial for the rational design of surfactants. Here, we develop a self-consistent field theory which unifies the study of CMC, micellar structure and kinetic pathway of micellization in one framework. The long-range electrostatic interactions are accurately treated, which not only makes the theory applicable to both nonionic and ionic surfactants but also enables us to capture a variety of salt effects. The effectiveness and versatility of the theory is verified by applying it to three types of commonly used surfactants. For polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers (C$_m$E$_n$) surfactants, we predict a wide span of CMC from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-2}$M as the composition parameters $m$ and $n$ are adjusted. For the ionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant, we show the decrease of CMC as salt concentration increases, and capture both the specific cation effect and the specific anion effect. Furthermore, for sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) surfactants, we find a non-monotonic dependence of both the CMC and micelle size on the number of oxyethylene groups. Our theoretical predictions of CMC are in quantitative agreement with experimental data reported in literature for all the three types of surfactants.

Abstract:This paper proposed a preprocessing method of SWCNTs dispersion based on rinsing technology. With the assistance of SDS, SC and SDBS, this method adopted the ultrasonication oscillation technology to solve the problem of SWCNTs dispersion. In addition, it compared the effect of the three kinds of surfactants on SWCNTs dispersion under the same conditions. And AFM was applied in this experiment to scan and image the samples. The results showed that the solubility and adsorption efficiency of the surfactants had influence on the SWCNTs dispersion quality. Furthermore, the paper primarily and theoretically modeled and analyzed the experiment results from the aspect of the surfactants' hydrophilic and lipophilic structure.

Abstract:The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of some sodium alkyl sulfates (SNS, SdS, SDS, STS, and SHS), sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDSO), CTAB and Triton X-100 were determined by measuring both the absorbance and the absorption wavelength of vitamin A in aqueous solutions of surfactants of various concentrations. The results are in agreement with those obtained by other methods in the literature. The influence of micelles upon the absorption spectra of vitamin A have been investigated. The effects of the temperature and the incubation time on the measurements have been discussed.

Abstract:Surfactant mixtures have extensive industrial applications due to their ideal properties and low ecotoxicity. However, the ecotoxicity of surfactant mixtures with different proportions and their correlation with surface properties have remained poorly investigated. In this study, the ecotoxicity and surface activity of the composites of anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and nonionic surfactant fatty alcohol-polyoxyethylene ether (AEO) in various mass ratios were assessed, and the correlation between ideal application properties and safe ecological perspective of the composites was explored. The ecotoxicity of individual SDBS, AEO, and SDBS/AEO mixtures was determined using the bioluminescence inhibition assay with Photobacterium phosphoreum, and the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were measured by surface tension method and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) showed a considerably higher toxicity than individual AEO and SDBS/AEO mixtures. Scanning electron microscope images illustrated the rupture of bacteria membrane induced by SDBS, and the addition of AEO alleviated the damage. According to the dose-response relationship on luminous bacteria, SDBS/AEO mixtures were divided into three groups (group I with a high proportion of SDBS, SDBS:AEO = 4:1 and 3:2; group II, SDBS:AEO = 1:1; group III with a high proportion of AEO, SDBS:AEO = 2:3 and 1:4). The sequence of toxicity of the SDBS/AEO mixtures was group II > group III > group I, demonstrating that the toxicity of the composites was related to the mixture proportion instead of the amount of AEO added. The CMC order of SDBS/AEO mixtures was group II > group I > group III, and it was proportion dependent. Furthermore, ΔCM was defined as the difference of the experimental (CM) and ideal CMC (CMideal) of the mixed system, indicating the interaction between the two kinds of surfactants. The order of the ΔCM was group II > group III > group I, which was consistent with the sequence of the toxicity. Therefore, ΔCM can be a potential indicator for the hazardous assessment of surfactant mixtures involving high ionic strength.
