Abstract:Water transport is an important property of concrete, which has the potential to be applied as a representative descriptor to reflect and predict the durability of concrete, especially in engineering. A better understanding of the water absorption behaviour of concrete is still needed. This study presents a systematic experimental and analytical study on the water absorption behaviour of concrete in terms of basic characteristics and corresponding mechanisms, important influencing factors, relations with other properties, and model characterization, which provides new insights. Results indicate that the mineral admixture, water-to-binder (W/B) ratio and curing age have a significant influence on both drying and absorption curves of concrete. The addition of fly ash or slag leads to smaller capillary absorption rates at low W/B ratios but causes higher capillary absorption rates at 28 d and smaller rates at 56 d at high W/B ratios. Concrete containing fly ash or slag and at smaller W/B ratio shows a more apparent anomalous absorption behaviour, which can be attributed to the C-S-H swelling capacity and sensitivity of pore structure to C-S-H swelling. The capillary absorption rate exhibits good linear relations with strength and total porosity. Based on the obtained experimental data, the representative water absorption models for concrete were evaluated for different mix proportions.
