Abstract:The transport of external agents as chloride into concrete is intimately linked to moisture (water) movement. Drying-wetting cycles are identified as the most favorable conditions for chloride penetration and the subsequent steel corrosion processes. Under such cycles, chloride ions migrate into concrete material by both mechanisms of convection and diffusion. The depth of convection zone of chloride transport can be measured by moisture influential depth in concrete. In the present paper, the moisture transports during drying and wetting are modeled respectively by diffusion and absorption processes. An analytical approach is adopted to investigate the influential depth. To help the analysis, the concept of equilibrium time ratio is proposed for drying-wetting cycles by the balance between water loss and intake. Measured by this time ratio, drying-wetting cycles are classified into drying-dominated, wetting-dominated and equilibrium ones. The corresponding moisture influential depths are expressed explicitly in terms of environmental factors and material transport properties. With the available concrete sorptivity data, the equilibrium time ratio and influential depth are calculated and discussed in depth.
