Abstract:We present experimental results on using optical transmission technologies such as I&Q modulators, digital coherent receivers, heterodyne up-conversion in fast photodiodes, to generate, transmit and detect high capacity wireless transmission. Both OFDM and QAM modulation formats are tested in the W-achieving capacities up to 100-Gbps with seamless optical fiber-wireless conversion.

Abstract:We summarize several advanced modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. Employing these multilevel modulation formats, we have realized PDM-36QAM 64Tb/s signals transmission over 320km fiber. Abstract:We summarize several novel schemes to generate multilevel modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. We show that multilevel 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM and 64QAM optical signals can be generated by commercial optical and electrical devices. We also show new algorithm to improve the performance of blind polarization de-multiplexing in the intra-dyne receiver. Ultra-high-capacity optical transmission experiment of 64Tb/s over 320km at SE=8b/s/Hz has been demonstrated by high-level QAM signals.

Abstract:In this paper, the recent progress on spectrally efficient single carrier (SC) 400G optical signal transmission was summarized. By using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 64QAM, we can realize transmission distance over 10000, 6000 and 3000 km, respectively, with large area fiber and all-Raman amplification. To improve the system performance and generate high-order QAM, advanced digital signal processing algorithms such as probabilistic shaping and look-up table pre-distortion are employed to improve the transmission performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate probabilistically shaped 64-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (64QAM) 50-GHz-grid wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission with a bit rate of 400-Gbit/s per channel over 3,600-km Raman-amplified ultra-large effective area fiber (ULAF). Our results show that the probabilistically shaped 64QAM outperforms the hybrid-32/64QAM by 50% reach improvement. Thanks to pre-equalization and look-up-table pre-distortion, a 5.5-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) gain can be obtained. Furthermore, utilizing ULAF with Raman amplifier causes an apparent improvement on the transmission performance compared with using the SSMF with EDFA. We also compare the optical coupler with the wavelength selective switch utilized in the WDM system to explore a suitable way for WDM transmission. Advanced DSP including Butterworth low-pass digital filter is also used at the receiver end.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:Delta-sigma modulation (DSM) has been considered as an effective means to replace the common public radio interface (CPRI) for the implementation of novel mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures. However, the recent studies paid great attention on the performance optimizations of the delta-sigma modulators, which could help to enhance signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Few of them focus on the improvement of noise immunity. In this paper, we apply three-dimensional (3D) constellations to DSM, thereby improving the noise immunity performance of the ultra-high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Moreover, addressing the huge number of constellation points in the ultra-high order constellations, we propose a novel constellation approach based on 3D-constellation partition. This approach significantly simplifies the transmission system, leading to an 8-fold improvement in processing efficiency. The experimental demonstrations were realized in a 100 GHz photonics-assisted W-band transmission system, indicating that the transmission scheme based on 3D-constellation could obtain an approximate 0.5 dB gain in receiver sensitivity compared to that using 2D-constellation. Verified by the transmission of ultra-high order DSM signals in the 15-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 2.6-m W-band wireless link, we could achieve 262144-QAM at a rate of 17.5 Gb/s under a simple digital signal processing (DSP).

Abstract:Nowadays the Internet not only has fast growing data traffic, but also has a fast growing number of on-line devices. This leads to high demand of capacity and flexibility of the future networks. The conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Nyquist pulse shaping signals have the advantage of high spectral efficiency when consisting of superchannels in the Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) way. However, they face a cost issue when the spectral granularity of the superchannel is decreased to support more users. This paper proposes for the first time the scheme of Orthogonal-band-multiplexed offset-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OBM-OQAM) superchannel. OBM-OQAM superchannel provides large capacity and high spectral efficiency. Furthermore, it has the advantage of offering subbands of variable symbol rate without changing the system configuration. We provide a proof-of-principle demonstration of OBM-OQAM superchannel transmission. In our experiment, 400 Gbps 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) OBM-OQAM superchannel transmission over 400 km Standard Single Mode Fiber (SSMF) is conducted. The experimental results show that the OBM-OQAM signal has low penalty in multi-band aggregation.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a large-capacity long-distance high-spectral-efficiency fiber-wireless-integration transmission system, which can realize photonics-aided multiband delivery of 54-Gb/s W-band polarization division multiplexing 8-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation downlink signal and 32-Gb/s K-band PDM-16QAM uplink signal over 20-km single-mode fiber-28 and 2500-m wireless 2 2 multiple-input multiple-output link, with a bit-error ratio under $\text{3.8}\times \text{10}^{{-3}}$. Transmitter-based predistortion and receiver-based decision-directed least-mean-square equalization are employed to improve the system performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of >2-km K-band wireless signal delivery with 16QAM, and the first demonstration of >2-km W-band wireless signal delivery with 8QAM.

Abstract:A novel method has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated to provide photonic-aided pre-coding quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal transmission in multi-antenna radio over fiber system to increase the throughput. For downlink, two different multi-level amplitude-shift-keying (M-ASK) modulated signals, such as 4-ASK signals, are applied on two uncorrelated optical Mach–Zehnder modulators at central office. After photonic-aided pre-coding module and photo-detection process, the received M-ASK mm-waves from two remote access units (RAUs) can be synthesized to a M2-QAM signal in the proposed system. Regardless of forward error correction (FEC) coding overhead, the 4-Gb/s and 8-Gb/s 16-QAM mm-wave signals are obtained from two independent 2-Gb/s and 4-Gb/s 4-ASK 40-GHz channels, respectively. The experimental results show that a doubled bit rate of the original 4-ASK one can be achieved without additional digital signal processing (DSP) in small cell RAUs and mobile users.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated Chromatic Dispersion (CD) robust Delta-Sigma Modulation (DSM) for high-order QAM mobile fronthaul. By using Duobinary (DB) encoding technology, the anti-dispersion ability of the DSM signal is effectively enhanced. At the same time, the DB coding technology can compress the signal bandwidth to a certain extent, thereby further improving the spectral efficiency of the digital mobile fronthaul based on the DSM technology. Through the joint coding scheme of DB and DSM, we successfully realized the 30 km fiber transmission of 30G baud DB-DSM signal in the C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) link. Compared with the conventional NRZ-DSM scheme, the DB-DSM scheme shows better receiver sensitivity and can support the transmission of larger bandwidth signals.

Abstract:In this letter, we experimentally demonstrated a high level quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser. This experiment was enabled by intrasymbol frequency-domain averaging-based channel estimation, large fast Fourier transform size to enhance the resistance of intersymbol interference, and the discrete Fourier transform-spread technique to reduce peak-to-average power ratio. A 31.7-Gbit/s 2048QAM OFDM signal can be successfully transmitted over 20-km large effective area fiber under a 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction threshold (bit error rate of 2.4 × 10-2).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a 10-channel 50-GHz-grid wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal transmission over 400-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with the net bit rate of 614.4 Gbpscarrier and the spectral efficiency (SE) of 12.288 bsHz, which is the highest SE for 256QAM to the best of our knowledge. Thanks to the joint pre-equalization and Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNLE), 49-Gbaud polarization division multiplexing (PDM) 256-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (256QAM) signal transmission with a novel constellation using probabilistic shaping (PS) and geometric shaping (GS) techniques is realized, considering the 0.828-normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI) low-density parity-check (LDPC) threshold with 25 overhead. Compared with the regular 256QAM at the same net bit rate, the designed hybrid PSGS 256QAM at the expense of 1-Gbaud increase in the symbol rate obtains 1.7-dB and 1.5-dB shaping gain in single-channel case and WDM case, respectively. Meanwhile, an improvement of at least 0.6-dB in optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) over the hybrid PSGS 256QAM is achieved in comparison with PS-256QAM for both single-channel and WDM transmission.

Abstract:We successfully demonstrate photonics-assisted single-carrier 466.4 Gbit/s wireless transmission over 20 km SSMF and 6 m single-input single-output (SISO) wireless delivery at 92.5 GHz. This is achieved by employing a likelihood-aware vector-quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) equalizer for polarization demultiplexing and an advanced multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra nonlinear equalizer (MIMO-VNE) further to compensate linear and nonlinear crosstalk between two polarizations. The capacity and robustness of the fiber-wireless system are extensively investigated, verifying that our proposed VQ-VAE with shared-layer autoencoder (SLAE) model outperforms state-of-the-art blind equalizers such as those based on constant modulus algorithm (CMA), VAE, and VQ-VAE algorithms. Additionally, the dual-polarized 40 Gbaud PCS-64QAM signal achieves a 2 dB power margin while meeting the 0.83 NGMI threshold, and a 0.05 gain in NGMI compared to traditional methods. This low-complexity training framework paves the way for enhancing wireless air interface capacities to approach those of fiber-optic transmission within fiber-wireless integration systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a quad-carrier 1-Tb/s solution with 37.5-GBaud PM-16QAM signal over 37.5-GHz optical grid at 6.7 b/s/Hz net spectral efficiency. Digital Nyquist pulse shaping at the transmitter and post-equalization at the receiver are employed to mitigate the impairments of joint inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and inter-channel-interference (ICI) symbol degradation. The post-equalization algorithms consist of one sample/symbol based decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) adaptive filter, digital post filter and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE), and a positive iterative process among them. By combining these algorithms, the improvement as much as 4-dB OSNR (0.1nm) at SD-FEC limit (Q(2) = 6.25 corresponding to BER = 2.0e-2) is obtained when compared to no such post-equalization process, and transmission over 820-km EDFA-only standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link is achieved for two 1.2-Tb/s signals with the averaged Q(2) factor larger than 6.5 dB for all sub-channels. Additionally, 50-GBaud 16QAM operating at 1.28 samples/symbol in a DAC is also investigated and successful transmission over 410-km SSMF link is achieved at 62.5-GHz optical grid.
