Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission based on FPGA. We successfully demonstrated four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) 256.51Gb/s 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM signal transmission system for short-reach optical amplifier free inter-connection with real-time reception. Four optical carriers are modulated by four different 16QAM-OFDM signals via 10G-class direct modulation lasers (DMLs). We achieved highest capacity real-time reception optical OFDM signal transmission over 2.4-km SMF with the bit-error ratio (BER) under soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) limitation of 2.4x10(-2). In order to achieve higher spectrum efficiency (SE), we demonstrate 4-channel high level QAM-OFDM transmission over 20-km SMF-28 with real-time reception. 58.72-Gb/s 256QAM-OFDM and 56.4-Gb/s 128QAM-OFDM signal transmission within 25-GHz grid is achieved with the BER under 2.4x10(-2) and real-time reception.

Abstract:Acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave has orthogonality between different modes, which can be utilized as a new multiplexing dimension to increase channel capacity of underwater acoustic communication systems. Combining OAM with other multiplexing techniques in different dimensions can further improve the data rate. In this paper, we propose a system integrating the acoustic OAM modes, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and index modulation (IM) to achieve high-speed underwater acoustic communication. The OAM-OFDM-IM communication system is established and its performance is simulated. The analysis of technical indicators verifies that the system's data transmission rate is significantly improved and its bit error rate performance enhances at high signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:In the letter, we propose to use delta-sigma modulator (DSM) technology to transmit OFDM high-order QAM signals in a single-carrier radio-over-fiber (RoF) system, and conduct experimental verification. The experiment demonstrates the transmission of OFDM-256/1024/4096 QAM signals using one-bit DSM in the W band in a 20 km SSMF and 1 m wireless RoF system, and successfully realized that the BER of OFDM-256 and 1024 QAM after system transmission is lower than the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10-3, and the BER after 4096 QAM transmission is lower than the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 4.0 x 10-2. The combination of DSM and the photonics-aided RoF solution can effectively solve the problem that the nonlinear damage caused by the bottleneck of the optoelectronic device in the RoF system limits the transmission of high-order QAM signals, and it is expected to be applied in the future 6G optical wireless network.

Abstract:Nowadays the Internet not only has fast growing data traffic, but also has a fast growing number of on-line devices. This leads to high demand of capacity and flexibility of the future networks. The conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Nyquist pulse shaping signals have the advantage of high spectral efficiency when consisting of superchannels in the Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) way. However, they face a cost issue when the spectral granularity of the superchannel is decreased to support more users. This paper proposes for the first time the scheme of Orthogonal-band-multiplexed offset-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OBM-OQAM) superchannel. OBM-OQAM superchannel provides large capacity and high spectral efficiency. Furthermore, it has the advantage of offering subbands of variable symbol rate without changing the system configuration. We provide a proof-of-principle demonstration of OBM-OQAM superchannel transmission. In our experiment, 400 Gbps 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) OBM-OQAM superchannel transmission over 400 km Standard Single Mode Fiber (SSMF) is conducted. The experimental results show that the OBM-OQAM signal has low penalty in multi-band aggregation.

Abstract:In this letter, we experimentally demonstrated a high level quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser. This experiment was enabled by intrasymbol frequency-domain averaging-based channel estimation, large fast Fourier transform size to enhance the resistance of intersymbol interference, and the discrete Fourier transform-spread technique to reduce peak-to-average power ratio. A 31.7-Gbit/s 2048QAM OFDM signal can be successfully transmitted over 20-km large effective area fiber under a 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction threshold (bit error rate of 2.4 × 10-2).

Abstract:OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) has been widely used in wire and wireless communications, because of its efficient use of the frequency spectrum and good multi-path tolerance. However, the OFDM system is very sensitive to frequency offset and phase noise. In order to overcome this disadvantage, asymmetric hexagonal QAM is presented in this paper as a new modulation method to solve this problem. Without weakening the resistance to noise, an asymmetric hexagonal QAM based OFDM system is easy to get the sub-carrier frequency and it is more convenient for its synchronization. In this paper, the asymmetric hexagonal QAM based OFDM system is designed and simulated by SystemView. Then the simulation results are presented and analyzed; the properties of asymmetric hexagonal QAM and rectangular QAM are compared.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-access orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal transmission system for free space optical communication and photon-assisted W-band millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communication. This new structure can combine the advantages of the free space optical communication and the W-band mm-wave wireless communication. Besides, the OFDM signal with high spectral efficiency and anti-interference capability can improve the data transmission rate and flexibility. Furthermore, it can adapt to the requirements of different communication scenarios. Utilizing the intra-symbol frequency-domain averaging (ISFA) technique and the discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-Spread) technique, 1Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) OFDM signal is transmitted successfully with the distance of 100 m for single-mode fiber (SMF), 100 m for FSO link and 4 m for wireless. The BER is under the soft-decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). To our knowledge, this is the first time to realize the transmission of OFDM signal in the integration system of free space optical communication and photon-assisted W-band mm-wave communication.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a real-time optical heterodyning and envelope detection-enabled orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing-based Q-band radio-over-fiber (OFDM-RoF) system. Envelope-detector-based down-conversion is applied to the mobile terminal (MT), which makes MT insensitive to the phase noise of the beating millimeter wave signal and enables the generation of RoF signals using two free-running non-narrow line-width distributed feedback lasers in the central office. The error-free transmission real-time Reed-Solomon- coded 16-quadrature-amplitude modulation(16-QAM)-OFDM-RoF signals with a net bit rate of 1.2 Gb/s at 35/40 GHz over 4.5-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 0.8-m wireless distance is reported in this paper. Additionally, the transmission performance of the signals at 35 GHz with the net bit rate from 1.5 to 5.9 Gb/s is also investigated by offline digital signal processing approaches. It indicates that the BER of the signal with the net rate up to 4.4 Gb/s after the SMF and wireless link transmission is below a 7% hard-decision forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3.

Abstract:We design the 4-dimensional set-partitioning 50-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (4D-SP-50QAM) and 8D-SP-50QAM with 7 bit/symbol in direct detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) systems. Quadrant multiplexing (QM) and orthant symmetry (OS) are respectively used to reduce the number of constellation points and the complexity of constellation mapping, while improving system bandwidth utilization. The proposed 8D-SP-50QAM scheme outperforms 4D-SP-50QAM, 4D-OS-64QAM and 4D 128-ary polarization-ring-switching (4D-128PRS) in terms of generalized mutual information (GMI) and bit error rate (BER) performance at various fiber length. In addition, the GMI gain increases gradually with the increase of fiber length, proving that this scheme can effectively improve system capacity and nonlinear tolerance.

Abstract:By multiplexing two OFDM signals with the same channel space and bit rate together in an interleaved mode, a novel optical multiplexing scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Since the channel space is halved, the spectral efficiency is doubled compared with conventional OFDM. It is proved that the orthogonality between the subcarriers is maintained as long as the data is real. With discrete Fourier transform, the proposed scheme has similar computational complexity as conventional OFDM and single sideband modulation is conveniently achieved. A 10 Gb/s transmission system is set up, and proves the feasibility and efficiency of the scheme experimentally.

Abstract:A simplified full-duplex 60-GHz optical millimeter-wave access system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated with a 16-QAM-OFDM downlink generated by selected mapping (SLM). The system receiver is realized with optical heterodyne detection and electrical self-mixing down-conversion. In the experiment, 5-Gb/s 16-QAM-OFDM signals are transmitted over 42-km SMF-28 and a 0.4-m wireless channel. The experimental results show that SLM can effectively reduce the peak-to-average power ratio and improve the receiver sensitivity. In addition, the proposed self-mixing down-conversion can simplify the transmitter and receiver configuration, since it eliminates the need for high-frequency microwave source at the central station and local oscillator at the base station.

Abstract:In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the generation and reception of online software-reconfigurable real-time 4/16/64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-encoded and forward error correction (FEC)-enabled orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals over X-band fiber-over-radio-based upstream links has been demonstrated. A Reed-Solomon code, i.e., RS (288, 256), with symbol interleaving/deinterleaving is applied to enhance bit-error-rate (BER) performance. The experimental results show that the 4/16/64-QAM-OFDM signals with net data rates of 1.6/3.2/4.8-Gb/s after 1.5-m wireless and 2.26-km SMF-28 transmission with BERs below the hard-decision FEC threshold of 3.8e-3 can be successfully achieved without using FEC. With the help of symbol-interleaved RS code, a post-FEC BER below 1e-8 can be observed when the pre-FEC BER is around 1e-3.
