Abstract:Pure thionyl azide SO(N(3))(2), which is the only gaseous reaction product, has been generated in a vacuum by the heterogeneous reaction of SOCl(2) vapor with AgN(3) at room temperature at a SOCl(2) vapor pressure of 1 x 10(-3) Torr. Evidence for the formation of SO(N(3))(2) is given by on line photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) combined with outer valence Green's function (OVGF) calculations with the 6-311++G(2df) basis set. The good agreement between the PES experiment and the OVGF calculation shows that SO(N(3))(2) has C(1) symmetry. The first ionization energy of SO(N(3))(2) is 10.18 eV.
A new specific mechanism for thioacid/azide amidation: electronic and solvent effects

Abstract:Detailed theoretical studies of azide/thioacid amidation are performed using density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that electronic properties of azide have significant effects on reaction pathways, which result in two distinct mechanisms for electron-rich and electron-poor azide coupling in the base-promoted amidation. For electron-rich azide amidation, after the concerted [3+2] cycloaddition of azide/thiocarboxylate, a new reaction channel is found challenging that recently mentioned, which follows two consecutive, unimolecular reactions with very low activation barriers (< 1.6 kcal mol −1 ) to give an anionic amide and a nitrous sulfide (N 2 S). Distinct from electron-rich azide amidation, electron-poor azide first couples with thiocarboxylate to form a linear stable adduct, and then passes through the transition state of the rate-controlling step to afford the anionic amide, rather than the thiatrazoline. The free energy barrier of this step is 4.2 kcal mol −1 lower than that previously proposed. Comparatively, the azide/thioacid amidations undergo the concerted [3+2] cycloaddition and the subsequent retro-[3+2] cycloaddition process to give cis-enol form of the amide, which have higher activation barriers than those in the based-promoted amidation. Solvent effects investigated indicate that non-polar solvents, such as chloroform, are more preferable for the base-promoted thioacid/azide amidation.

Abstract:Oxalyl diazide O2C2(N-3)(2) has been generated in the heterogeneous reaction of (COCl)(2) vapor with AgN3 at room temperature. Evidence for the formation of O2C2(N-3)(2) is based on on-line photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) characterization combined with the density functional B3LYP and outer valence Green's function (OVGF) calculations. The good agreement between the experimental spectra and theoretical calculation shows that O2C2(N-3)(2) has adiabatic ionization energy of 10.11 eV. Our results also suggest that O2C2(N-3)(2) has high conformational flexibilities and that the planar conformers are energy-favorable in gas phase.

Abstract:The parent sulfonyl azide CH3SO2N3 has been characterized in a neat form by IR (gas, matrix-isolation) and Raman (solid) spectroscopy, and its structure has been established by X-ray crystallography. In both gas phase and solid state, the azide exhibits single conformation with the azido ligand being synperiplanar to one of the two S=O groups. In the crystal molecules of CH3SO2N3 are interconnected through three-dimensional O center dot center dot center dot H-C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. Upon an ArF laser (193 nm) photolysis, the azide in solid noble gas matrices splits off N-2 and yields the sulfonyl nitrene CH3SO2N in the triplet ground state. Subsequent photolysis with UV light (266 nm) causes the transformation from the nitrene to the pseudo-Curtius rearrangement product CH3NSO2. The identification of the photolysis intermediates by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by quantum chemical calculations with DFT methods.
Reaction Between a NO2 Dimer and Dissolved SO2: A New Mechanism for ONSO3- Formation and Its Fate in Aerosol.

Abstract:Experimental observations indicate that sulfate formation in aerosol is sensitive to the concentrations of nitric oxide (NO2). While it also widely exists as a dimer in the gas phase, previous studies focus on the monomer of NO2. In this study, we employ quantum chemical calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the reaction between the NO2 dimer (ONONO2) and sulfite (HSO3-/SO32-) in the gas phase and in an aerosol. Gas-phase reactions turn out to be barrierless. In an aerosol, the reaction between adsorbed ONONO2 and HSO3- to form ONSO3- follows a stepwise mechanism with proton and electron transfer processes. The reaction between ONONO2 and SO32- is more straightforward. Nevertheless, both reactions occur at a picosecond time scale. Decomposition of ONSO3- can form an NO molecule and SO3-, which gives a complementary pathway for sulfate formation in an aerosol. Hydrolysis of ONSO3- to form HNO and HSO4- is highly impossible in an aerosol, which calls for a revisit of the atmospheric N2O formation mechanism. The results presented in this study deepen our understanding of the interaction between NO2 and SO2 pollutants in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Sulfuryl diazide, O(2)S(N(3))(2), previously described as an "exceedingly explosive" compound, has been isolated and characterized by IR (Ar matrix, gas) and Raman (solid) spectroscopy, and its structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It has a melting point of -15 °C and can be handled in small quantities in gas, liquid, and solid states. Vibrational spectroscopic studies suggest the presence of only one conformer in both gas and solid states, and the X-ray crystallography revealed an anti conformation of the two azido groups with respect to the NSN plane. Calculations predict the anti (C(2)) conformer to be 6.6 kJ mol(-1) lower in energy than the syn (C(s)) one at the CBS-QB3 level of theory. The related chlorosulfuryl azide, ClSO(2)N(3), has also been prepared and characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:The aluminum chloride (AlCl3)–facilitated electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reaction of benzene (PhH) with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) in the molar ratio of PhH:SOCl2:AlCl3 = 2:1:1 was studied under different conditions. At about 70°C, adding granular AlCl3 (equimolar to SOCl2) piecewise to a 2:1 mixture of PhH and SOCl2 led to formation of a highly pure (99.9%) sole product of diphenyl sulfoxide (Ph2SO) in an isolated yield of 85% after aqueous workup. It represents a simple and very efficient synthesis of Ph2SO, an important fundamental organic reagent. At about 0°C, adding PhH (twice the molar quantity of SOCl2) to a 1:1 mixture of SOCl2 and AlCl3 gave both diphenyl sulfide Ph2S (yield: 37%) and Ph2SO (yield: 27%) after aqueous workup, together with a small amount of S-phenyl benzenesulfonothioate PhSO2SPh (yield: about 5%) and a trace amount of diphenyl sulfone (Ph2SO2). A possible mechanism has been proposed to account for formation of all these products, especially for the formation of Ph2S [S (II)] from SOCl2 [S (IV)], which involves a novel reduction of sulfur in the course of the EAS reaction.

Abstract:Fluorosulfonyl azide, FSO2N3, was characterized by IR (gas phase, Ar matrix), and Raman (liquid) spectroscopy. According to the matrix IR spectrum of O-18-labeled FSO2N3, its two oxygen atoms are nonequivalent. This assumption was confirmed by the X-ray crystal structure of FSO2N3 at - 123 degrees C, as only one conformer was observed with one of the S=O bonds in synperiplanar position to the N-3 group (phi(OS-NN) = -14.8(3)degrees) with respect to the S-N bond. The same conformation was found for trifluoromethylsulfonyl azide, CF3SO2N3 (phi(OS-NN) = -23.74(15)degrees), in the solid state. The preference of such a synperiplanar configuration between S=O and N-3 was rationalized by a predominant anomeric interaction of n(sigma)(N) -> sigma*(S-O), as supported by the experiment and quantum chemical calculations.
Photodecomposition of Thienylsulfonyl Azides: Generation and Spectroscopic Characterization of Triplet Thienylsulfonyl Nitrenes and 3-Thienylnitrene

Abstract:The photochemistry of 2-thienylsulfonyl azide (1) and 3-thienylsulfonyl azide (6) has been disclosed by combining matrix-isolation spectroscopy with quantum chemical calculations. Two novel heteroaryl sulfonyl nitrenes, 2-thienylsulfonyl nitrene (2) and 3-thienylsulfonyl nitrene (7), have been generated during the 266 nm laser photolysis of 1 and 6, respectively. Both nitrenes in the triplet ground state have been characterized with matrix-isolation IR (15N-labeling) in solid Ar (10.0 K), N2 (10.0 K), and Ne (2.8 K) matrixes and EPR spectroscopy (2, |D/hc| = 1.452 cm-1 and |E/hc| = 0.0058 cm-1; 7, |D/hc| = 1.492 cm-1 and |E/hc| = 0.0060 cm-1) in solid toluene at 5.0 K. Upon subsequent UV-light irradiation (365 nm), no Curtius rearrangement but decomposition of 2 occurs by SO2-elimination and the concurrent formation of ring-opening product (s-Z)-4-thioxo-2-butenenitrile (3) via the intermediacy of the putative 2-thienylnitrene (4). In contrast, violet-light irradiation (400 ± 20 nm) of 7 causes SO2-elimination to yield triplet 3-thienylnitrene (8), for which the IR spectroscopic identification is supported by quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. 3-Thienylnitrene is highly reactive, since it not only combines with SO2 to furnish 3-thienyl-N-sulfonylamine (9) but also undergoes ring-opening to (s-E)-4-thioxo-2-butenenitrile (10) under the UV-light irradiation (365 nm).

Abstract:Reaction mechanism of 1,1,1-trifluorotrichloroethane (CF3CCl3) and sulphur trioxide (SO3) in the presence of mercury salts (Hg2SO4 and HgSO4) was studied applying the density functional theory (DFT) at the UB3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level. It was found that this reaction occurs in the free radical chain path as follows: mercury(I) sulphate free radical is generated by heat, causing CF3CCl3 to produce the CF3CCl2 free radical which reacts with SO3 leading to the formation of CF3CCl2OSO2 decomposing into CF3COCl and SO2Cl. The SO2Cl free radical triggers CF3CCl3 to regenerate CF3CCl2 which recycles the free radical growth reaction. This elementary reaction has the highest energy barrier and it is therefore the rate control step of the whole reaction path. Experiment data can confirm the existence of the mercury(I) salt free radical and the free radical initiation stage. So, mercury salts play the role of initiators not that of catalysts. The results agree well with our hypothesis.
The reaction mechanism of SO3 with the multifunctional compound ethanolamine and its atmospheric implications

Abstract:SO3 is an important reactive species in sulfur cycle and sulfuric acid formation processes and its reactions with some functional group substances, such as H2O, NH3, CH3OH, and organic and inorganic acids, have been extensively studied. However, its loss mechanism with multifunctional species is still lacking in detail. Herein, the reaction mechanism between SO3 and monoethanolamide (MEA) was investigated in the gas phase and on water droplets. The quantum chemical calculations indicate that the gas-phase reactions of SO3 with the OH and NH2 moieties of MEA hardly occur as their reaction energy barriers are up to 21.9-29.4 kcal mol-1. When a single water molecule is added into the SO3 + MEA reaction, it not only decreases the reaction barrier by at least 15.0 kcal mol-1 and thus enhances the rate obviously, but can also lead to the main product changing from HOCH2CH2NHSO3H to NH2CH2CH2OSO3H. The Born Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations on a water droplet show that the routes of the NH2CH2CH2OSO3-⋯H3O+ ion pair, HSO4- and HOCH2CH2NH3+ ions and zwitterionic formations of HOCH2CH2NH2+-SO3- and SO3--OCH2CH2NH3+ occur through a loop-structure route or chain reaction process, and can be finished within several picoseconds. Interestingly, the nucleation simulations show that the products of HOCH2CH2NHSO3H and NH2CH2CH2OSO3H have a potential ability to participate in the formation of new particles as they can form larger clusters with H2SO4, NH3 and H2O molecules within 20 ns. Thus, the present study will not only give new insight into the reaction between SO3 and multifunctional compounds, but also provide a new potential formation mechanism for particles resulting from the loss of SO3.

Abstract:Using quantum chemistry methods, the mechanism, structure-activity-relationship, and water effect in the reactions of criegee intermediates (CIs) with SO2 to form SO3 and aldehydes was investigated. Result indicates that S atom added to the terminal O atom in CIs, and one of the O atoms in SO2 added to C center leading to a five-membered-ring intermediate, in which the C-O and O-O bond cleavage subsequently to give out SO3. Although the barriers reach to be around 90 kJ/mol, the relative energy of transition states is lower than the initial reactants, and thus, this channel is feasible to undergo. With one H atom in CH2OO substituted by methyl group, energy barrier increases slightly; while methyl replaced by larger n-alkyl group (from C2H5 to n-C5H11), the energy converged to be 91 kJ/mol. When 1-4 water molecules take part in the reactions of CH2OO, anti-/syn-CH3CHOO and (CH3)(2)COO with SO2, hydrogen-bond will be formed between H2O molecules and intermediates or transition states. Result shows that three water molecules is feasible for the reactions of CH2OO and syn-CH3CHOO with SO, while two H2O molecules give out the lowest barrier in the reactions of anti-CH3CHOO and (CH3)(2)COO with SO2.

Curtius-Type Rearrangement of Sulfinyl Azides: A Matrix Isolation and Computational Study.

Abstract:The highly unstable methyl sulfinyl azide, CH3S(O)N3, has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. In the gas phase, CH3S(O)N3 decomposes quickly at room temperature (300 K) with an estimated half-life (t1/2) of 7 min. Upon irradiation at 266 nm in cryogenic Ar (10 K) and Ne (3 K) matrices, the azide extrudes molecular nitrogen by yielding the novel sulfinyl nitrene intermediate CH3S(O)N in the closed-shell singlet ground state, which has been characterized with matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Prolonged irradiation at 266 nm causes Curtius rearrangement of the nitrene to form N-sulfinylamine CH3NSO and S-nitrosothiol CH3SNO. By high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) at 800 K, CH3S(O)N3 also decomposes and furnishes CH3S(O)N with minor fragmentation products HNSO and CH2 in the gas phase. A similar photo-induced Curtius-type rearrangement of trifluoromethyl sulfinyl azide CF3S(O)N3 to CF3NSO and CF3SNO has also been observed in matrices. According to the theoretical calculations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G (3df,3pd) level of theory, the rearrangement of CH3S(O)N3 prefers a stepwise pathway by initial formation of the nitrene intermediate CH3S(O)N. In line with the thermal persistence of CH3S(O)N in the gas phase, the barriers for its subsequent rearrangement are higher than 30 kcal mol-1.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of [{NCNMe4}Sb(C6H2-tBu2-3,5-O-4)] (3), an organoantimony(III)-oxyaryl species obtained upon Csp2−H bond activation in a phenolate ligand and stabilised by the monoanionic pincer {NCNMe4}–. The mechanism leading to the formation of 3 is highly sensitive to steric considerations. It was probed experimentally and by DFT calculations, and a number of intermediates and related complexes were identified. All data agree with successive heterolytic bond cleaving and bond forming processes involving charged species, rather than a pathway involving free radicals as previously exemplified with congeneric bismuth species. The nucleophilic behaviour of the oxyaryl ligand in 3, a complex that features both zwitterionic and quinoidal attributes, was illustrated in derivatisation reactions. In particular, insertion of CS2 in the Sb−Coxyaryl bond generates [{NCNMe4}Sb(S2C-C6H2-tBu2-3,5-O-4)].

Gaseous nitryl azide N4O2: A joint theoretical and experimental study

Abstract:Gaseous nitryl azide N4O2 is generated by the heterogeneous reaction of gaseous ClNO2 with freshly prepared AgN3 at −50°C. The geometric and electronic structure of the molecule in the gas phase has been characterized by in situ photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and quantum chemical calculations. The experimental first vertical ionization energy of N4O2 is 11.39eV, corresponding to the ionization of an electron on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) {4a″(πnb(N4–N5–N6))}−1. An apparent vibrational spacing of 1600±60cm−1 (νasO1N2O3) on the second band at 12.52eV (πnb(O1–N2–O3)) further confirms the preference of energetically stable chain structure in the gas phase. To complement the experimental results, the potential-energy surface of this structurally novel transient molecule is discussed. Both calculations and spectroscopic results suggest that the molecule adopts a trans-planar chain structure, and a five-membered ring decomposition pathway is more favorable.

Abstract:The treatment of [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) with 1 equiv of BnK (Bn = benzyl) in toluene affords [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)LnBn [Ln = Er (1-Er), Y (1-Y)] in good yields. Similarly, [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)LnSu [Ln = Er (2-Er), Yb (2-Yb)] are obtained in satisfactory yields by the reaction of [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) with (BuLi)-Bu-t in hexane. 1 reacts with (1)/(8) equiv of S-8 in toluene to form the sulfur insertion products {[(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-SBn)}(2) [Ln = Er (3-Er), Y (3-Y)], while the reaction of 2 with elemental sulfur under the same conditions affords the oxidation products {[(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln}(2)(mu-eta(2)center dot eta(2)-S-2) [Ln = Er (4-Er), Yb (4-Yb)] regardless of the equivalency of S-8 employed. Disulfide complexes 4 can also be obtained by the reaction of 3 with (1)/(4) equiv of S-8. Furthermore, the treatment of [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-Cl)2Li(THF)(2) with 1 equiv of (BuLi)-Bu-n in hexane, followed by reaction with (1)/(8) equiv of S-8, affords the dinuclear thiolate complexes {[(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-(SBu)-Bu-n)}(2) [Ln = Y (5-Y), Er (5-Er)] in good yields. However, under the same conditions, [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCY)(2)](2)Yb(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) reacts with (BuLi)-Bu-n and S-8 to give {[(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCY)(2)](2)Yb}(2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-S-2) (4-Yb) as the main metal-containing product. [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)LnPh (generated in situ from [(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCy)(2)](2)Ln(mu-Cl)(2)Ln(THF)(2) and PhLi) also undergoes sulfur insertion, affording {[(Me3Si)(2)NC(NCY)(2)](2)Ln(mu-SPh)}(2) [Ln = Er (6-Er), Yb (6-Yb)] in good yields. All of the complexes were characterized by spectroscopic and elemental analyses. The structures of all of these compounds, except 3-Y, are also determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Surprisingly, 3, 5, and 6 bear the same space group and very similar cell parameters, despite the different thiolate ligands.
