Abstract:Sulfuryl diazide, O(2)S(N(3))(2), previously described as an "exceedingly explosive" compound, has been isolated and characterized by IR (Ar matrix, gas) and Raman (solid) spectroscopy, and its structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It has a melting point of -15 °C and can be handled in small quantities in gas, liquid, and solid states. Vibrational spectroscopic studies suggest the presence of only one conformer in both gas and solid states, and the X-ray crystallography revealed an anti conformation of the two azido groups with respect to the NSN plane. Calculations predict the anti (C(2)) conformer to be 6.6 kJ mol(-1) lower in energy than the syn (C(s)) one at the CBS-QB3 level of theory. The related chlorosulfuryl azide, ClSO(2)N(3), has also been prepared and characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:The previously recognized "extremely explosive" carbonyl diazide, OC(N(3))(2), was prepared as a pure compound and unambiguously characterized by gas-phase IR, matrix IR, and Raman spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography for the first time. The pure substance shows remarkable kinetic stability at room temperature in the gaseous, liquid, and solid states. A melting point of 16 °C and vapor pressure of 5.6 mbar at 0 °C were determined. Two planar conformers were found in the gas phase, and a composition of 12% anti-syn versus 88% syn-syn conformer in the gaseous equilibrium mixture at room temperature was estimated by matrix IR spectroscopy. In the crystal structure, only the more stable syn-syn conformer was observed. The preference of the syn-syn configuration was supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract:The azide and amide complexes (NBu4)[Ni(N3)('S3')] (2) and (NBu4)[Ni[N(SiMe3)2]('S3')] (4) were found to react with CO, CO2, and SO2 under very mild conditions at temperatures down to -50 degrees C. Depending on the N oxidation state of the nitrogen ligands, addition or partial to complete desoxygenation of the oxides takes place. The reaction between 2 and CO gives (NBU4)[Ni(NCO)('S3')] (3). The reactions between 4 and CO, CO2, and SO2 afford selectively the cyano, isocyanato, and sulfinylimido complexes (NBu4)[Ni(X)('S3')] with X = CN- (5), NCO- (3), and NSO- (6). The silyl groups act as oxygen acceptors. Mechanisms are suggested which have in common the formation of reactive five-coordinate (NBu4)[Ni(L)(L')('S3')] intermediates. In these reactions, highly activated L and L' react with each other. The complexes were characterized by standard methods, and (NBu4)[Ni(CN)('S3')] (5) was also analyzed by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Sulfonyl azide isocyanate, (OCN)S(O)(2)N-3, was prepared and characterized by IR (gas, matrix-isolation), Raman (liquid), and UV-vis spectroscopy. Upon flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) at ca. 1000 K, gaseous (OCN)S(O)(2)N-3 decomposes completely and yields fragments N-2, SO2, SO3, NCN, N-3, NCO, CO, CN, and NO. In contrast, the azide splits off N-2 and furnishes a transient triplet sulfonyl nitrene intermediate (OCN)S(O)(2)N upon a 266 nm laser irradiation in solid Ne-matrix at 2.8 K. Subsequent photolysis of the nitrene with visible light (lambda = 380-450 nm) results in oxygen-shifted Curtius rearrangement to a novel nitroso sulfoxide (OCN)S(O)NO. For comparison, the photodecomposition of the closely related sulfonyl diazide O2S(N-3)(2) in a solid Ar matrix was also studied. Upon an ArF excimer laser (193 nm) photolysis, O2S(N-3)(2) decomposes and yields N-2, SO2, and OSNNO via the intermediacy of an elusive sufonyl nitrene N3S(O)(2)N. Further visible light irradiation (lambda > 395 nm) leads to depletion of N3S(O)(2)N and OSNNO and concomitant formation of SO2 and N-2. The identification of the intermediates in cryogenic matrixes by IR spectroscopy was supported by N-15-labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations. The mechanism for the decomposition of both sulfonyl azides (OCN)S(O)(2)N-3 and O2S(N-3)(2) was discussed on the basis of the observed intermediates and the calculated potential energy profiles.

Abstract:The parent sulfonyl azide CH3SO2N3 has been characterized in a neat form by IR (gas, matrix-isolation) and Raman (solid) spectroscopy, and its structure has been established by X-ray crystallography. In both gas phase and solid state, the azide exhibits single conformation with the azido ligand being synperiplanar to one of the two S=O groups. In the crystal molecules of CH3SO2N3 are interconnected through three-dimensional O center dot center dot center dot H-C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. Upon an ArF laser (193 nm) photolysis, the azide in solid noble gas matrices splits off N-2 and yields the sulfonyl nitrene CH3SO2N in the triplet ground state. Subsequent photolysis with UV light (266 nm) causes the transformation from the nitrene to the pseudo-Curtius rearrangement product CH3NSO2. The identification of the photolysis intermediates by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by quantum chemical calculations with DFT methods.

Abstract:Sulfur diisocyanate is generated from a heterogeneous reaction of gaseous sulfur dichloride with silver cyanate and studied for the first time in the gas phase. Combined with quantum chemical calculations, the electronic structure is characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). Simultaneously, an investigation of the possible ionization and dissociation processes for the molecular cation is presented based on experimental soft ionization mass spectrometry. From the calculated bond-dissociation energies, the dissociation pathway is determined. S(NCO)(2)(+) undergoes 1,3-sigmatropic rearrangement with a smaller barrier height (9.9 kcal mol(-1)) than the neutral counterpart. Thus, the 1,3-sigmatropic rearrangement is preferred for the molecular cation, and OCNCO+ and NS+ is produced by subsequent dissociation of the rearrangement product. The analysis agrees very well with the experimental mass spectrum.

Abstract:Fluorosulfonyl azide, FSO2N3, was characterized by IR (gas phase, Ar matrix), and Raman (liquid) spectroscopy. According to the matrix IR spectrum of O-18-labeled FSO2N3, its two oxygen atoms are nonequivalent. This assumption was confirmed by the X-ray crystal structure of FSO2N3 at - 123 degrees C, as only one conformer was observed with one of the S=O bonds in synperiplanar position to the N-3 group (phi(OS-NN) = -14.8(3)degrees) with respect to the S-N bond. The same conformation was found for trifluoromethylsulfonyl azide, CF3SO2N3 (phi(OS-NN) = -23.74(15)degrees), in the solid state. The preference of such a synperiplanar configuration between S=O and N-3 was rationalized by a predominant anomeric interaction of n(sigma)(N) -> sigma*(S-O), as supported by the experiment and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:Chloro- and dichloro-methylsulfonyl nitrenes, CH2ClS(O)(2)N and CHCl2S(O)(2)N, have been generated from UV laser photolysis (193 and 266 nm) of the corresponding sulfonyl azides CH2ClS(O)(2)N-3 and CHCl2S(O)(2)N-3, respectively. Both nitrenes have been characterized with matrix-isolation IR and EPR spectroscopy in solid N-2 (10 K) and glassy toluene (5 K) matrices. Triplet ground-state multiplicity of CH2ClS(O)(2)N (|D/hc| = 1.57 cm(-1) and |E/hc| = 0.0026 cm(-1)) and CHCl2S(O)(2)N (|D/hc| = 1.56 cm(-1) and |E/hc| = 0.0042 cm(-1)) has been confirmed. In addition, dichloromethylnitrene CHCl2N (|D/hc| = 1.57 cm(-1) and |E/hc| = 0 cm(-1)), formed from SO2-elimination in CHCl2S(O)(2)N, has also been identified for the first time. Upon UV light irradiation (365 nm), the two sulfonyl nitrenes R-S(O)(2)N (R = CH2Cl and CHCl2) undergo concomitant 1,2-R shift to N-sulfonlyamines R-NSO2 and 1,2-oxygen shift to S-nitroso compounds R-S(O)NO, respectively. The identification of these new species with IR spectroscopy is supported by N-15 labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. In contrast, the thermally-generated sulfonyl nitrenes CH2ClS(O)(2)N (600 K) and CHCl2S(O)(2)N (700 K) dissociate completely in the gas phase, and in both cases, HCN, SO2, HCl, HNSO, and CO form. Additionally, ClCN, OCCl2, HNSO2, center dot NSO2, and the atmospherically relevant radical center dot CHCl2 are also identified among the fragmentation products of CHCl2S(O)(2)N. The underlying mechanisms for the rearrangement and decomposition of CH2ClS(O)(2)N and CHCl2S(O)(2)N are discussed based on the experimentally-observed products and the calculated potential energy profile.

Abstract:The title compound, [Ag-2(NO3)(2)(C5H5NS)](n), was obtained from the reaction of silver nitrate with bis(4-pyridyl) disulfide (4-PDS) in a mixture of ethanol and water, which suggests that the disulfide bond of 4-PDS can be cleaved under mild conditions. The structure of the title compound is a two-dimensional infinite array in which the asymmetric unit contains two Ag atoms, a pyridinium-4-thiolate molecule and two nitrate groups. Each pyridinium-4-thiolate molecule acts as a mu(4) bridge, linking four Ag atoms, with Ag-S bond distances of 2.4870(19), 2.5791(19), 2.5992(19) and 2.848(2) Angstrom. The Ag...Ag distances lie in the range 2.889 (2)-3.049 (1) Angstrom.
