Abstract:In the present work, the gas-slag equilibration technique was employed for the measurement of the thermodynamic activity of vanadium oxide. The vanadium-containing slag kept in a platinum crucible was equilibrated with a gas mixture of CO, CO2 and Ar, with well-defined oxygen partial pressure at a pre-determined temperature. The slag sample was quenched and the composition of the final slag was determined by chemical analysis. From the value of the oxygen partial pressure, the thermodynamic activity of VO1.5 could be calculated using the value for the activity of vanadium in V-Pt alloy. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range 1823 similar to 1923K and the oxygen partial pressures employed were 10(-3), 10(-4), 10(-5) Pa. The present results show that the activity of vanadium(III) oxide in slag exhibits a negative deviation from ideality in the present composition range. With increasing basicity of the slag, the final content of vanadium oxide in the slag was found to show an initial increase followed by a constant content. The activities of vanadium(III) oxide did not exhibit any significant change with increasing temperature. The activity coefficient of vanadium(III) oxide decreased sharply with slag basicity approximately up to a basicity of 1, beyond which it showed a near-constant value. Increase in basicity was found to cause a change in the distribution of vanadium between the slag and the alloy phases even though this effect was less pronounced. From the present results, a mathematical relationship for estimating the vanadium content in slag for a given activity of vanadium in the molten metal phase was developed.
Evaluating the Effect of MgO/Al2O3 Ratio on Thermal Behaviors and Structures of Blast Furnace Slag with Low Carbon Consumption

Abstract:In order to clarify the effect of the MgO/Al2O3 ratio on the fluidity of a low-alumina blast furnace slag system, the influence law of slag fluidity with different MgO/Al2O3 ratios was studied based on the composition of blast furnace slag through a viscosity experiment and themodynamic software. By studying the effect of the MgO/Al2O3 ratio on the activation energy of viscous flow of slag combined with FT-IR, the effect of the MgO/Al2O3 ratio on the thermal-stability of low-aluminum slag was interpreted from the microstructure level. Results indicated that the viscosity and the melting temperature of slag both showed a gradual downward trend due to the increase of the MgO/Al2O3 ratio. Besides, the temperature stability of the low aluminum slag became more stable due to the depolymerization of the complex structure of slag. Considering the actual operating conditions of blast furnace, the MgO/Al2O3 ratio of slag was suggested to be controlled to 0.60 and the basicity to be no higher than 1.20 under the conditions of this investigation. Industrial test results showed that the coke rate could be saved as 3.49 kg/t when the MgO/Al2O3 ratio decreased from 0.70 to 0.58.

Abstract:Thermodynamic activities of chromium oxide contained in CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 melts were measured in the present work using gas-slag equilibrium technique. The oxygen partial pressure was varied (10(-)3, 10(-4), 10(-5) Pa). Gas mixture of CO, CO2 and Ar were used and investigated at 1803, 1873 and 1923 K. The activities of CrO showed a strong positive deviation from ideality and a decrease with increasing temperature and oxygen partial pressure. A mathematical expression relating the amount of chromium oxide in the slag phase with the activity of Cr in the metal phase based on the present experimental results is presented.

Abstract:To optimize the comprehensive utilization of vanadium titanomagnetite by direct reduction-smelting processes, it is essential to acquire titanium slag with a higher TiO2 content of 45–60 wt.%. A thermodynamic model was developed based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory, specifically targeting the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO–TiO2–V2O3–FeO slag system. The impact of slag composition on the smelting of vanadium titanomagnetite was assessed, and the thermodynamic model was utilized to identify the optimal high-titanium slag. The results revealed that increasing the basicity, MgO content, and FeO content within the slag effectively suppressed the reduction of titanium and silicon oxides. Furthermore, the calculated activity coefficient of TiO2 decreased with higher basicity, MgO, and FeO levels. While an increase in basicity significantly enhanced the reduction of vanadium oxides, the effects of MgO and FeO contents on vanadium oxide reduction were comparatively less significant. Notably, higher basicity and FeO content promoted the formation of calcium titanates, whereas an elevated MgO content favored the formation of magnesium titanates. The smelting results indicated that a lower V2O3 content and higher TiO2 activity corresponded to a smaller titanium mass fraction in the iron alloy, while the opposite trend was observed for vanadium.

Abstract:Herein, the thermophysical properties of industrial blast furnace slag are studied with varying TiO2, V2O3, and FeOx content using a rotating viscometer and maximum bubble pressure method. Additionally, the results are supported by thermodynamic calculations. The effect of varying valance states on the thermophysical properties is discussed. The thermophysical properties of an industrial blast furnace slag with varying TiO2, V2O3, and FeOx content are investigated using a rotating viscometer and maximum bubble pressure method at low oxygen partial pressure. The obtained experimental results are supported by thermodynamic calculations using FactSage 7.2 software and by scanning electron microscope analysis. The measurement outcomes clearly indicate that an increase in V2O3 and TiO2 content up to 10 wt% at 5 wt% FeOx leads to a decrease in the viscosity of all studied slags; however, with 15 wt% of V2O3 and TiO2, the viscosity changes insignificant. The presence of 10 wt% FeOx alters the behavior of the slags in the liquid‐dominant region. These changes in the break point temperature are consistent with the behavior of melilite and perovskite phases. Moreover, an increase in the FeOx, V2O3, and TiO2 increases the density of all studied slags within the temperature range of 1450–1650 °C. Additionally, introducing pure oxides to the slag reduces the surface tension of all the studied slags, confirming their role as a surfactant.

Effect of W(mgo)/w(al2o3) Ratio and Basicity on Microstructure and Metallurgical Properties of Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract:The CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO system is the main component unit in the slag formation process in blast furnace smelting. Its structural changes directly affect the high-temperature metallurgical properties of slag. Molecular dynamics simulations were thus conducted to analyze the microstructure changes of the quaternary slag system under different basicities and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratios. The changes in w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio and basicity could affect the stability of each ion-oxygen. Increasing the basicity and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio, the average coordination number of O surrounding Si atom only changed a little and remained approximately 4, indicating that Si exists as a stable structure of the [SiO4]4− tetrahedron in the slag structure, while the average coordination number of O surrounding Al atom changed greatly from 4 to 6, which indicated that the Al existence form could be transformed from [AlO4]5− tetrahedron to [AlO5]7− pentahedron and [AlO6]9− octahedron. Also, the diffusion rate of ions was accelerated with the increase in w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio and basicity. Moreover, the self-diffusion coefficients of each ion were obtained, and the magnitudes were observed to be in the following order: Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Al3+ > Si4+. The calculation and analysis of the slag viscosity and activation energy of viscous flow under different basicities and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratios revealed that the metallurgical properties of slag at high temperature depend on the flow-unit diffusivity and the microstructure stability, simultaneously, the basicity should be controlled between 1.0 and 1.2, and the w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio could be controlled between 0.45 and 0.55.

Abstract:The thermodynamic properties of the CaO-Al2O3-VOx slag system are of great significance to the direct alloying of vanadium in the smelting process of vanadium steel. In this paper, the phase equilibrium relationship of the CaO-Al2O3-VOx system under argon atmosphere at 1500 °C was studied with a high-temperature phase equilibrium experiment. Combined with SEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS, the types and compositions of each phase of the equilibrium slag samples and the content of different valence states of the vanadium element were determined. The result shows that under argon atmosphere (p(O2) = 10−3 atm) at 1500 °C, the CaO-Al2O3-VOx slag system contains four three-phase regions, seven two-phase regions, and a single-phase region (glass phase). The phase equilibrium results were plotted in a CaO-Al2O3-V2O5-VO2 spatial phase diagram, and the phase equilibrium results were projected on the CaO-Al2O3-V2O5 and CaO-Al2O3-VO2 pseudo-ternary phase diagrams, respectively. In the end, the rationality of projecting the phase equilibrium results to the pseudo-ternary phase diagram was quantitatively evaluated.

Abstract:The isothermal and non-isothermal oxidation kinetics of a converter vanadium slag in the presence of calcium oxide was studied using thermal analysis. The isothermal experimental data for the whole oxidation process are described in terms of the equation [1− (1−α)2/3] = kt with Ea = 20.42 kJ mol–1 at lower temperatures of 400-500 °C, and described by [(1−α)–1/3−1]2 = kt with Ea = 227.66 kJ mol–1 at temperature higher than 500 °C. In the nonisothermal oxidation study, heating rate greatly affects the oxidation process. Using a heating rate of 3 °C min–1 results in overlapping oxidations of vanadium spinel and augite over temperature range of 608-959 °C, which is described by the 3/2 order reaction. Increasing the heating rate to 5 °C min–1 or 10 °C min–1, only oxidation of vanadium spinel takes place in temperature range of 657-914 °C and 691-954 °C respectively, both described by the third order chemical reaction. As the slag particle decreases from 250 µm to 48 µm, the kinetic equation for describing the overlapping oxidation process changes from the Anti–Zhuravlev equation with internal diffusion controlling to reaction limiting equations.

Abstract:The metallurgical properties of blast furnace slag changed when high alumina iron ore was used extensively due to the resulting changes of the molten slag microstructure. In the study, based on typical CaO–MgO–SiO2–Al2O3 slag systems with different w(Al2O3) content, molecular dynamics simulation was used to calculate the microstructural properties of particles in the high-temperature slag system, such as bond length, partial radial distribution function, coordination numbers, and diffusion coefficient. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and 27Al solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al SS MAS NMR) were used to detect and analyze the samples. The comprehensive calculations and experimental results show that increasing w(Al2O3) can enhance the structural stability of each ion pair, and the strength of the structural stability is such that Si–O > Al–O > Mg–O > Ca–O. The self-diffusion coefficients are as follows: Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Al3+ > Si4+, which leads to the transformation of the [SiO4]4−(Q0), [Si2O7]6−(Q1) and [Si2O6]4−(Q2) structural units to [Si2O5]2−(Q3). The degree of polymerization of slag increased as well as the stability of the structural units. Moreover, the coordination of Al will change from the [AlO6]9−octahedral structure of six-coordinated Al to the [AlO5]7−pentahedral structure of five-coordinated Al and the [AlO4]5−tetrahedral structure of four-coordinated Al. It was also found that the content of non-bridge oxygen in the whole slag system decreased continuously, leading to the increasing degree of polymerization of slag, and the experimental results were consistent with the molecular dynamics calculation.
Effect of Alumina on the Behavior of V-Rich Spinel Phase in CaO-SiO2-FeOt-MgO-Al2O3-V2O3-P2O5 Slags at 1573 K (1300 °C)

Abstract:To ascertain the thermodynamic conditions for the enrichment of vanadium in V-bearing steelmaking slag and V-bearing black shale, the effects of alumina content and basicity on the formation of phases and distribution of vanadium in CaO-SiO2-FeOt-MgO-Al2O3-V2O3-P2O5 slag system at 1573 K (1300 °C) were investigated by adopting the high-temperature quenching method. The phases formed in the samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy. For slags with a basicity of 1.7, it was found that nearly all of the vanadium were concentrated in the (Fe, Mg)O·(Al, Fe, V)2O3 spinel. For slags with basicities of 1.5 and 1.3, vanadium was almost not found in the supercooled glass phase when the alumina content was less than 6 mass pct. However, some vanadium was present in the supercooled glass phase when the alumina content was more than 6 mass pct. For slags with a basicity of 1.0, vanadium migrated between the V-rich spinel and the supercooled glass phase. With an increase in the alumina content from 2 to 10 mass pct, the vanadium content in the spinel phase decreased from 28 to 33 mass pct to approximately 10 mass pct. From these results, it can be concluded that the increase in alumina content and decrease in basicity of the slag are unfavorable for the enrichment of vanadium present in the spinel.

Abstract:Viscosities of FeO-SiO2-V2O3-CaO-P2O5 slags have been measured at the temperature range of 1673 K to 1773 K (1400 °C to 1500 °C). This investigated system represents the major components of basic vanadium slag that is an important intermediate product of a novel vanadium extracting process, in which removal of phosphorus and extraction of vanadium can be achieved from the vanadium-containing hot metal simultaneously. It was found that higher CaO/SiO2 ratio resulted in lower viscosity in the composition range of interest. Also, the viscosities increase with the increasing P2O5 concentration. The varying viscosities can be attributed to the modification in complexity and polymerization of the slag network. The variation of apparent activation energies are in tune with the viscosity measurements. The results of this work revealed the effect of CaO/SiO2 and P2O5 on the viscous properties of FeO-SiO2-V2O3-CaO-P2O5 slags and therefore provide the theoretical foundation for the control of the coupling de-P and V-extraction process.

Abstract:In the present article, fundamental reaction mechanisms for the extraction of vanadium from CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 slags based on vaporization of V2O5 are investigated. Several parameters influencing the vanadium extraction are analyzed. The results make it possible to develop innovative methods for extracting vanadium from slags. In this way, expensive primary raw materials can be saved, while going one step closer toward a circular economy. Vanadium is an important micro‐alloying element for various steel grades. Consequently, it is also present in the slags used in the production of those grades. During steelmaking, the vanadium vaporization from the slag is not desirable, as it increases vanadium consumption and at the same time releases toxic vapors of its higher oxides. However, the recovery of vanadium from the slag after the processing is worthwhile. In oxidic form as vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), vanadium can be extracted from the slag. In this research, the vaporization behavior of vanadium from CaO–SiO2–MgO–Al2O3 industrial slag is investigated at 1873 K. The effect of different process parameters, e.g., the pressure in the furnace chamber, the duration of the oxygen treatment of the slag, and the oxygen flow rate, is considered. The effect of P2O5 and Fe2O3 addition on the extraction of vanadium is studied. It is possible to induce formation of V2O5 gas bubbles in the slag due to the oxidation of vanadium. Thus, vanadium respectively V2O5 is extracted from the slag.

Prediction Model for SiO2 Activity in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO Quaternary Slag System

Abstract:Activity models based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory have been widely used in the refining of metallurgical slags, with the SiO2 content of slag playing a crucial role in improving the mechanical properties of refining slag-based cementitious materials. In order to improve the reactivity of SiO2 in slag, this study established a SiO2 activity prediction model for the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO quaternary slag system based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory, validating the prediction results using reference values from the literature. Following this, the effects of w(SiO2), w(CaO), w(CaO)/w(Al2O3), and R(w(CaO)/w(SiO2)) on SiO2 activity were explored (where w and R represent content and alkalinity, respectively). The results show that the model could accurately predict the SiO2 activity of refining slag at 1873k. When the SiO2 content was increased from 10% to 30%, with 60% w(CaO) and a w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio of 0.25, the SiO2 activity exhibited a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing, with a maximum activity value of 0.1359 reached at 17.5% w(SiO2). When slag contained 15% w(SiO2) and a w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio of 0.25, the SiO2 activity decreased with increasing CaO content, reaching a maximum activity value of 0.1268 when 55% w(CaO) was present. Therefore, by controlling the ratio of w(CaO)/w(Al2O3) and w(CaO)/w(SiO2) in the slag to maintain a ratio of 3, the activity of SiO2 can be effectively increased.

Investigation on Vanadium Chemistry in Basic-Oxygen-Furnace (BOF) Slags—A First Approach

Abstract:Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag accounts for the majority of all residual materials produced during steelmaking and may typically contain certain transition metals. Vanadium, in particular, came into focus in recent years because of its potential environmental toxicity as well as its economic value. This study addresses the vanadium chemistry in BOF slags to better understand its recovery and save handling of the waste stream. The experimental results from the electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) study show that vanadium is preferably incorporated in calcium orthosilicate-like compounds (COS), with two variations occurring, a low vanadium COS (COS-Si) (approx. 1 wt.%), and a high vanadium COS (COS-V) (up to 18 wt.%). Additionally, vanadium is incorporated in dicalcium ferrite-like compounds (DFS) with an average amount of 3 wt.%. Using powder x-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD), EPMA, and virtual component models, stoichiometric formulas of the main vanadium-bearing phases were postulated. The stoichiometries give an estimate of the oxidation states of vanadium in the respective hosts. According to these results, trivalent vanadium is incorporated on the Fe-position in dicalcium ferrite solid solution (DFS), and V4+ and V5+ are incorporated on the Si-position of the COS.

Abstract:This article uses Sn as the metal flux and CaF 2-CaO as the reference slag to experimentally measure the activity of CaO at T = 1773∼1873 K. The effects of different w(Al 2O 3) and temperature(T) on CaO activity were investigated. The results are as follows: when w(MgO) = 6%, R( w(CaO)/ w(SiO 2)) = 1.20, w(Al 2O 3) = 12%, 14%, 16% and 18%, with the increase of w(Al 2O 3), the activity and activity coefficient of CaO in slag gradually decrease; with the increase of temperature (T), the activity and activity coefficient of CaO in slag gradually increase; the activity coefficient of Ca in Sn decrease with increasing temperature.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> To concentrate vanadium dissolved in steelmaking slag and to separate the obtained vanadium (V)-concentrating phase by a magnetic method, the mineral phases in a CaO-SiO2-MgO-FeOt-Al2O3-V2O3-P2O5 system at 1573 K (1300 °C) were characterized by scanning-electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry. When the samples were equilibrated in a pure iron crucible and argon atmosphere, four phases were identified, namely, orthosilicate, V-bearing spinel, wüstite, and a glass phase. The orthosilicate, V-bearing spinel, and glass phase occurred in all samples, whereas wüstite appeared only in samples with a higher basicity or high FeOt content. The results indicate that the V-bearing spinel phase, which is analogous to Fe3O4, is a thermodynamically stable phase that is suitable for the enrichment of vanadium dissolved in slags. Further analysis reveals that the increases in contents of FeOt and MgO in slag favor spinel-phase formation. When the slags are saturated by the wüstite phase, almost all dissolved vanadium can be concentrated in the spinel phase.

Phase Diagram of CaO-Al2O3-VOx Slag System Under Reducing Atmosphere

Abstract:The phase diagram information of the CaO-Al 2 O 3 -VO x system is of significant importance for the direct alloying study of vanadium (V) during the smelting process of V-containing alloy steel, as well as for subsequent process optimization. This study has utilized the high-temperature phase equilibrium experimental method, combined with scanning electron microscope–energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM–EDS), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detection techniques, to research the phase equilibrium of the CaO-Al 2 O 3 -VO x system under argon (Ar) atmosphere at 1400°C. This study reveals that the phase diagram of CaO-Al 2 O 3 -VO x system, under the specified conditions, comprises 4 three-phase regions, 7 two-phase regions, and a liquid phase region. This study has plotted the CaO-Al 2 O 3 -V 2 O 5 -VO 2 three-dimensional phase diagram and represented the phase equilibrium in CaO-Al 2 O 3 -V 2 O 5 , CaO-Al 2 O 3 -VO 2 , CaO-Al 2 O 3 -VO 2.335 , and Ca-Al-V systems. At the same time, the reliability of each projected phase diagram was quantitatively assessed.

Abstract:The present work investigated the effect of V2O3 in the range of 0 to 10.5 wt% on the thermophysical properties (viscosity, density, and surface tension) of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-TiO2 slags with the CaO/SiO2=1.3 and varied content of Al2O3 and TiO2. The obtained experimental results were then supported by thermodynamic calculation with FactSage 7.2. The results shown that, with the increase of the V2O3 content, the viscosity of all studied slags decreased. Moreover, the addition of TiO2 up to 10 wt% to the matrix slag led to a decrease in viscosity and the addition of Al2O3 up to 20 wt% increased the viscosity without the presence of V2O3. Thereby the behavior of critical temperature on all viscosity curves corresponded with the behavior of crystallization temperature of melilite. The increase in the content of V2O3 to 10.5 wt% in all slags with and without additional TiO2 or Al2O3 resulted in an increase in density at temperatures of 1450–1650°C. The surface tension increased with increasing Al2O3 content and decreased with increasing TiO2 and V2O3.

Abstract:Vanadium titano-magnetite is an important iron ore resource containing iron, vanadium and titanium. Although iron and vanadium can be recovered by the traditional blast furnace process, titanium can only be stored in the form of TiO2 bearing slag, which resulting in a great waste of titanium resources. In the full oxygen bath smelting process, thanks to high oxygen potential, low nitrogen content and no coke bed in the furnace, the reduction of TiO2 in the slag. This may lead to slag viscosity, inhibit the smelting of vanado-titano-magnetite, and obtain a slag with high TiO2 content. Based on slag coexistence theory, a multi system coexistence theoretical model of vanadium titano-magnetite smelting slag is established, and the influence of slag basicity on the concentration of slag components and the ratio of sulfur between slag and iron is calculated. The results show that with the increase of slag basicity, the interaction concentration of TiO2 in slag decreases gradually, which makes the reduction of TiO2 more difficult and is conducive to the smelting of vanadium–titanomagnetite. Under the optimum alkalinity and reduction temperature (R=1.1, melting temperature is 1500 °C), the distribution ratio of S element between slag and iron is 6.57, and the theoretical S concentration in molten iron is 0.073%. The molten iron can meet the steel-making requirements after pretreatment and desulfurization.

Abstract:The high-temperature metallurgical property of high-titania slag is one of the most significant indicators to measure the production status of Cr-bearing vanadia-titania magnetite blast furnace (CVTM-BF). Due to the continuous high temperature in the furnace, titania is over-reduced to titanium carbonitride with a high melting point (over 3000°C), which causes the viscosity of the slag to be too high to separate the molten iron and molten slag well. However, a high proportion of N2 in the air blasted into the furnace participates in the generation of TiN, and the large required air volume causes a high coke ratio and excessively high furnace temperature, which is not conducive to suppressing the over-reduction of titania. Here we show that TiN was significantly reduced and the metallurgical properties of high-titania slag were improved by injecting abandoned basic oxygen furnace gas (ABOFG), which is a kind of by-product gas containing CO, CO2, lower N2 and high physical heat. The experimental results demonstrated that the ABOFG was likely to function in suppressing TiN from 2.46% to 1.06%, dropping the melting temperature down from 1478.8°C to 1290.3°C, pushing the slag-iron interface tension from 0.641 N/m to 0.882 N/m as well as bring the viscosity down from 0.353 Pa⋅s to 0.341 Pa⋅s. Overall, ABOFG as a kind of endothermic atmosphere compared to O2-enriched air is beneficial to restrain the over-deduction of titania to TiN upon the slag-coke interface with lower N2. It also helps CVTM-BF to be recovered from the continued deterioration as soon as possible.
