Abstract:Stannaspherene refers to an icosahedral 12-atom Sn cage cluster (Sn-12(2-)) and has also been found to be able to trap all transition metals to form gaseous endohedral clusters (M@Sn-12(-)). During exploratory solution syntheses of endohedral stannaspherenes, a new closo-deltahedral cluster, Pd-2@Sn-18(4-), has been isolated as a (2,2,2-crypt)K+ salt through the reaction of K4Sn9 and Pd[P(C6H5)(3)](4) in ethylenediamine solutions and characterized via X-ray crystallography. The new Pd-2@Sn-18(4-) cluster has pseudo-D-3d symmetry and is composed of 18 Sn atoms encapsulating two Pd atoms. It can be viewed as the fusion of two endohedral stannaspherenes (Pd@Sn-12(2-)) along their C-3 axis by removing a Sn-3 triangle on each Sn-12 unit at the cluster-cluster interface. Electronic structure calculations show that Pd-2@Sn-18(4-) consists of a Sn-18(4-) cage with two zero-valent Pd atoms and possesses a highly stable electronic configuration.

Abstract:The first example of metal Sn-fused perylene diimides (PDI) derivative (Sn-PDI) was designed, synthesized, and investigated. To obtain this type compound, a simple one-pot synthesis, named stannylative cycloaddition reaction, has been successfully developed via a palladium-based catalyst system. The novel mechanism exhibits that the reaction experiences oxidative addition, Pd-cyclization, stannylation, Pd-Sn-cyclization, and reductive elimination processes successively. This stannylative cycloaddition does realize unique σ-π hyperconjugation effect and therefore significantly influencing on the photophysical, electrochemical and excited state properties. Compared with those of PDI, both of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of Sn-PDI display large red-shifts over 20 nm. The electron energy levels of Sn-PDI have changed with an uncommon regulation. And Sn-PDI gives a considerably raised highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -6.00 eV. More importantly, the singlet excitons of Sn-PDI could efficiently intersystem cross (ISC) into triplet state with a long lifetime of 17.8 μs, which is far longer than that (4.4 ns) of PDI.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:An air‐stable Pd8 hexaphosphinidene nanocluster is reported. Spectroscopic investigations and calculations substantiate zerovalency, whereas the coordinative unsaturation allows for facile post‐functionalization. Atomically precise nanoclusters hold promise for supramolecular assembly and (opto)electronic‐ as well as magnetic materials. Herein, this work reports that treating palladium(0) precursors with a triphosphirane affords strongly colored Pd8(PDip)6 that is fully characterized by mass spectrometry, heteronuclear and Cross‐Polarization Magic‐Angle Spinning (CP‐MAS) NMR‐, infrared (IR), UV–vis, and X‐ray photoelectron (XP) spectroscopies, single‐crystal X‐Ray diffraction (sc‐XRD), mass spectrometry, and cyclovoltammetry (CV). This coordinatively unsaturated 104‐electron Pd(0) cluster features a cubic Pd8‐core, μ4‐capping phosphinidene ligands, and is air‐stable. Quantum chemical calculations provide insight to the cluster's electronic structure and suggest 5s/4d orbital mixing as well as minor Pd─P covalency. Trapping experiments reveal that cluster growth proceeds via insertion of Pd(0) into the triphosphirane. The unsaturated cluster senses ethylene and binds isocyanides, which triggers the rearrangement to a tetrahedral structure with a reduced frontier orbital energy gap. These experiments demonstrate facile cluster manipulation and highlight non‐destructive cluster rearrangement as is required for supramolecular assembly.

Abstract:Superatoms are promising as new building block materials that can be designed by precise controlling of the constituent atoms. Stannaspherene (Sn122–) is a rigid cage‐like cluster with icosahedral symmetry, for which one‐atom encapsulation was theoretically expected and detected in the gas phase. Here, a single‐atom introduction method into stannaspherene using a dendrimer template with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) protection is demonstrated. This advanced solution‐phase synthesis allows not only the selective doping of one atom into the cluster cage, but also enable further detail characterization of optical and magnetic properties that were not possible in the gas‐phase synthesis. In other words, this liquid‐phase synthesis method has enabled the adaptation of detailed analytical methods. In this study, FeSn12 was synthesized and characterized, revealing that a single Fe atom introduction in the Sn122– cage result in the appearance of near‐infrared emission and enhancement in the magnetism.

Abstract:Two novel stiff stilbene bridged rim-differentiated pillar[5]arenes (bis-RD-P[5]s) were designed, synthesized and characterized. Subsequently, their binding ability and fluorescence properties with a suitable tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative were investigated. With the aid of supramolecular assembly-induced emission (SAIE), luminescent supramolecular nanoparticles (SN) were constructed through host–guest interactions between a bis-RD-P[5] and the TPE derivative. Interestingly, the SN showed strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and presented special selectivity and sensitivity for Pd 2+ ; the fluorescence limit of detection of SN for Pd 2+ is 5 × 10 −7 M. The bis-RD-P[5]s offer a new building block to construct sophisticated supramolecular assemblies, and the resulting SN acted as a convenient test material for the detection of Pd 2+ .

Abstract:Intercluster bonding features are relevant to bringing building blocks on the road to molecularly conceived materials in a rational fashion. Such characteristics have been developed for coinage metal clusters resembling single, double, and triple bonded species, coined as supermolecules. Here, we extend such an approach to the understanding of main-group clusters pursuing evaluation of [Pd2@E18]4- clusters (E= Ge, Sn) involving the fusion from parent spherical aromatic [Pd@E12]2- building units. Our results denote an intercluster bonding provided by contribution from 2P and 1G shells centered at each building motif, leading to an overall bond order of 2.70 and 2.31 for [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4-, respectively. In addition, 119Sn-NMR patterns were evaluated to complement the experimental characterization of a single peak owing to in-solution fluxional behavior for [Pd2@Sn18]4-, as three peaks owing to the three sets of unique Sn atoms within the structure. Magnetic response properties reveal that the spherical aromatic characteristics from the parent [Pd@E12]2- building units are retained in the overall [Pd2@E18]4- oblate cluster as two spherical aromatic units. Hence, the notion of superatomic molecules is extended to Zintl-ion clusters, favoring further rationalization on the making of cluster-assembled solids.

Abstract:AbstractConstructing ambient‐stable, single‐atom‐layered metal‐based materials with atomic precision and understanding their underlying stability mechanisms are challenging. Here, stable single‐atom‐layered nanoclusters of Pd were synthesized and precisely characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography. A pseudo‐pentalene‐like Pd8 unit was found in the nanocluster, interacting with two syn PPh units through nonmetal‐to‐metal ‐ring coordination. The unexpected coordination, which is distinctly different from the typical organoring‐to‐metal coordination in half‐sandwich‐type organometallic compounds, contributes to the ambient stability of the as‐obtained single‐atom‐layered nanocluster as revealed through theoretical and experimental analyses. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations revealed dominant electron transition along the horizontal x‐direction of the Pd8 plane, indicating high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the nanocluster, which was verified by the experimental PCE of 73.3 %. Therefore, this study unveils the birth of a novel type of compound and the finding of the unusual nonmetal‐to‐metal ‐ring coordination and has important implications for future syntheses, structures, properties, and structure–property correlations of single‐atom‐layered metal‐based materials.

Abstract:Hollow Pd/Sn bimetallic nanocrystals were fabricated by a fast one-pot strategy in an oleylamine system. This method produced a fine single crystalline bimetallic hollow nanostructure. The process and influencing factors of the reaction are also discussed in this work. Bimetallic nanoparticles possessing special hollow structures with single-crystalline nature are expected to have particular electronic, mechanical and optical properties.

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of a new chlorostannate(II) hybrid material, 2(C 4 H 4 FN 3 O).SnCl 6 .2(H 2 O), 1 . The structure studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a zero-dimensional (0D) [SnCl 6 ] 2− octahedra surrounded by protonated Flucytosine cations (C 4 H 4 FN 3 O) + . The molecular packing is maintained stable via hydrogen bonds N/C/OH···Cl, and NH···O hydrogen bonds, and Cl/F···π interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis showed that the most significant contacts in crystal packing are H···Cl/Cl···H interactions (41.2 %), H···O/O···H interactions (11 %) and N···Cl/Cl···N interactions (10.4 %) interactions, respectively. The band gap energy of the material was measured to be 3.6 eV, indicating the semiconductor behavior of the material. The theoretical calculations were carried out using DFT and TD-DFT methods to appraise the molecular geometry, electronic absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals (FOMs), and global reactivity descriptors. Calculations reveal that the energy gap (E g ) and other chemical reactivity descriptors are primarily linked to the inorganic anion, and the organic cation, reflecting their importance in the activity and the antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Hexagonal Yb3+/Er3+:NaGdF4 nanocrystals codoped with Sn2+ ions were prepared via a modulated solvothermal method. Upon introducing 25mol% Sn2+ ions into the host lattice by substituting Gd3+ ions, a portion of Yb3+ /Er3+:NaGdF4 nanocrystals was converted into nanorods. Meanwhile, the upconversion (UC) luminescence intensity of 542 nm and 652 nm were intensified by 24 and 33 times respectively, when compared with samples without Sn2+ ions doping. The effect of Sn2+ ions doping content on the morphology and UC emission performances of Yb3+ /Er3+:NaGdF4 nanocrystals were discussed in detail. The enhancement of UC luminescence intensity could be attributed to the growth of UC nanocrystals and the low crystal local symmetry around Yb3+/Er3+ ion pairs. This study may be beneficial for fabricating high-performance UC materials and realizing their practical applications.
