Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic composites composed of two visible light responsive semiconductors of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) and CdS were successfully synthesized via an "in situ" precipitation-deposition method. The C3N4-CdS heterostructures were fabricated by depositing CdS nanoparticles onto the surface of C3N4. The morphology and optical property of compsoites can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of C3N4-CdS, which determines the enhanced level of photocatalytic activity. The optimum activity of 0.7C(3)N(4)-0.3CdS photocatalyst is almost 20.5 and 3.1 times higher than those of individual C3N4 and CdS for the degradation of methyl orange, and 41.6 and 2.7 fold higher for the degradation of 4-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. Moreover, its activity is also much higher than those of C3N4-TiO2 and CdS-TiO2 composites, as well as N-modified TiO2. Of special significance is that the present C3N4-CdS composites exhibit high stabilities under illumination, in contrast with CdS. The enhancement in both performance and stability should be assigned to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges originating from the well-matched overlapping band-structures and closely contacted interfaces. Our work highlights that coupling semiconductors with well-matched band energies provides a flexible route to improve the activity and stability of photocatalysts, and gives ideas for the design and synthesis of other highly active and stable materials.
Double S-scheme Cu2-xSe/twinned-Cd0.5Zn0.5S homo-heterojunctions with surface plasmon effects for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:The enhancement of charge separation and utilization efficiency in both the bulk phase and interface of semiconductor photocatalysts, as well as the expansion of light absorption range, are crucial research topics in the field of photocatalysis. To address this issue, twinned Cd0.5Zn0.5S (T-CZS) homojunctions consisting of wurtzite Cd0.5Zn0.5S (WZ-CZS) and zinc blende Cd0.5Zn0.5S (ZB-CZS) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method to facilitate the bulk-phase charge separation. Meanwhile, Cu2-xSe with localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) generated by Cu vacancies was also obtained through a hydrothermal process. Due to their opposite electronegativity, a solvent evaporation strategy was employed to combine Cu2-xSe and T-CZS by intermolecular electrostatic. After optimization, the photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution rate of 5 wt% Cu2-xSe/T-CZS reached an impressive value of 60 mmol∙h-1∙g-1, which was 4.6 and 66.6 times higher than that of pure Cu2-xSe and T-CZS, respectively. Furthermore, this composites demonstrated a remarkable rate of 0.46 mmol∙h-1∙g-1 under near-infrared (NIR) wavelength (>800 nm). The enhanced performance observed in Cu2-xSe/T-CZS can be attributed to its unique and efficient double S-scheme charge transfer mechanism which effectively suppresses rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs both within the bulk phase and at the surface interfaces; this conclusion is supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations as well as electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, incorporation of Cu2-xSe enables effective utilization ultraviolet visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) light by the composites while facilitating injection "hot electrons" into T-CZS for promoting photocatalytic reactions. This study provides a potential strategy for achieving efficient solar energy conversion through synergistic integration of non-stoichiometric plasmonic materials with photocatalysts with twinned-twinned structures.

Abstract:Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) based heterostrutures has attracted intensive attention due to their prominent photocatalytic performance. Here, we explore the g-C3N4/SnS2 coupling effect on the electronic structures and optical absorption of the proposed g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure through performing extensive hybrid functional calculations. The obtained geometric structure, band structures, band edge positions and optical absorptions clearly reveal that the g-C3N4 monolayer weakly couples to SnS2 sheet, and forms a typical van der Waals heterojunction. The g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure can effectively harvest visible light, and its valence band maximum and conduction band minimum locate in energetically favorable positions for both water oxidation and reduction reactions. Remarkably, the charge transfer from the g-C3N4 monolayer to SnS2 sheet leads to the built-in interface polarized electric field, which is desirable for the photogenerated carrier separation. The built-in interface polarized electric field as well as the nice band edge alignment implys that the g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure is a promising g-C3N4 based water splitting photocatalyst with good performance.
2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction with a covalent organic framework and g-C3N4 nanosheets for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:The fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions with fast charge transfer and good interface contacts, such as intermolecular π–π interactions, is a promising approach to improve photocatalytic performance. A unique two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) S-scheme heterojunction containing TpPa-1-COF/g-C3N4 nanosheets (denoted as TPCNNS) was developed. The established maximum interfacial interaction between TpPa-1-COF NS and g-C3N4 NS may result in a π–π conjugated heterointerface. Furthermore, the difference in the work functions of TpPa-1-COF and g-C3N4 results in a large Fermi level gap, leading to upward/downward band edge bending. The spontaneous interfacial charge transfer from g-C3N4 to TpPa-1-COF at the π–π conjugated interface area results in the presence of a built-in electric field, according to the charge density difference analysis based on density functional theory calculations. Such an enhanced built-in electric field can efficiently drive directional charge migration via the S-scheme mechanism, which enhances charge separation and utilization. Thus, an approximately 2.8 and 5.6 times increase in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate was recorded in TPCNNS-2 (1153 μmol g−1 h−1) compared to pristine TpPa-1-COF and g-C3N4 NS, respectively, under visible light irradiation. Overall, this work opens new avenues in the fabrication of 2D/2D π–π conjugated S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with highly efficient hydrogen evolution performance.

Abstract:The design and construction of heterojunction photocatalysts, which possess a staggered energy band structure and appropriate interfacial contact, is an effective way to achieve outstanding photocatalytic performance. In this study, 2D/2D BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunctions were successfully obtained by a convenient in situ self-assembly route. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, 99% of RhB (10 mg·L−1, 100 mL) was efficiently degraded by 1.5-BiOBr/g-C3N4 within 30 min, which is better than the performance of both BiOBr and g-C3N4, and it has superior stability. In addition, the composite also exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 production. The enhanced activity can be attributed to the intimate interface contact, the larger surface area, and the highly efficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. Based on the experimental results, a novel S-scheme model was proposed to illuminate the transfer process of charge carriers. This study presents a simple way to develop novel step-scheme photocatalysts for environmental and related applications.

Interface engineered cascade-type electronic structure of 2D/0D/2D CdS-CdCO3/SnO2 quantum dots/g-C3N4 nanocomposite for boosting solar-driven photocatalysis

Abstract:A rational design of heterojunctions with high-quality contacts is essential for efficiently separating photogenerated charge carries and boosting the solar-driven harvesting capability. Herein, we fabricated a novel heterojunction of SnO2 quantum dots-anchored CdS-CdCO3 with g-C3N4 nanosheets as a superior photocatalyst. SnO2 quantum dots (SQDs) with positively charged surfaces were tightly anchored on the negatively charged surface of CdS nanosheets (NSs). The resulting CdS@SnO2 was finally decorated with g-C3N4 NSs, and a new crystalline phase of CdS-CdCO3 was formed during the hydrothermal decoration process, g-C3N4 decorated CdS-CdCO3@SnO2 (CdS-CdCO3@SnO2@g-C3N4). The as-synthesized photocatalysts were evaluated for the degradation of methyl orange dye under solar light conditions. The CdS-CdCO3@SnO2@g-C3N4 exhibited 7.7-fold and 2.3-fold enhancements in photocatalytic activities in comparison to those of the bare CdS and CdS@SnO2 NSs, respectively. The optimal performance of CdS-CdCO3@SnO2@g-C3N4 is primarily attributed to the cascade-type conduction band alignments between 2D/0D/2D heterojunctions, which can harvest maximum solar light and effectively separate photoexcited charge carriers. This work provides a new inspiration for the rational design of 2D/0D/2D heterojunction photocatalyst for green energy generation and environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:The preparation of photocatalysts with efficient electron-hole separation efficiency is the key to achieving sustainable utilization of solar energy. Herein, a three-phase composite of N,P co-doped carbon dots (NPCDs), SnO2 nanowires, and g-C3N4 nanotubes (CNNT) is synthesized, forming an S-scheme SnO2/NPCDs/CNNT heterojunction. The construction of S-scheme heterojunction not only improves the reduction ability due to band bending, but also promotes the separation of carriers. The conductive NPCDs are located between SnO2 and CNNT and formed as a unique charge transfer channel that accelerates carriers transfer between S-scheme heterojunction interfaces. Additionally, NPCDs serves as electron acceptors to receive electrons from the conduction band of CNNT, thereby further facilitating the carrier separation. This synergistically boosts the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of SnO2/NPCDs/CNNT three-phase catalysts, leading to a high H2 yield (10.73 mmol·g−1·h−1) and outstanding cyclic stability. This study offers a strategy for designing heterostructure photocatalysts that enhanced charge separation through interface engineering.

Abstract:In order to alleviate the increasingly serious energy problems, the researches and developments of photocatalysts with efficient solar energy utilization, low price and cost, and long-term stability are the critical problem to expand the application technology of photocatalysis. In this work, Co doped Sn3O4 and g-C3N4 were constructed into an S-scheme Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalytic system by simple and feasible solvothermal method for photocatalytic H2 evolution. And different loading amounts of Co–Sn3O4/CN-X were obtained by mean of changing the dosage of Co–Sn3O4. The synthesized photocatalysts represented exceptional H2 evolution performance under visible light irradiation (λ>420 nm), among which Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4-3 showed the best performance, and the H2 yield reached 1793.88 μmol h−1 g−1. This value was significantly higher than that of single catalysts Sn3O4 (294.82 μmol h−1 g−1) and g-C3N4 (1111.28 μmol h−1 g−1). Moreover, the H2 yield of reused Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4-3 sample kept above 1737.67 μmol h−1 g−1 during cyclic test. XPS, UV–vis DRS and a series of photoelectrochemical analysis ascertained the establishment of internal electric field and bending of the energy band between the interface of Co–Sn3O4 and g-C3N4, which provided the possibility for Co–Sn3O4 and CN to construct Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterostructure. What's more, the mechanism of producing H2 on the surface of Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 by oxidizing H2O was proposed. This work demonstrated the application prospect of reasonably designing g-C3N4 based photocatalysts with exceptional stability, sterling functionality and prominent efficiency for H2 evolution, and provided availed guidance for the research and development of g-C3N4 based photocatalysts.

Abstract:The replacing and surpassing of some functions of traditional metal-based photocatalysts by low-cost and high-efficiency non-metal semiconductor materials have become a research hotspot in functional materials. In this paper, the ultra-thin nanoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets were successfully embedded with highly dispersed S quantum dots (S QDs) by ultrasonic-assisted in-situ growth method, which originates from the disproportionation reaction of sodium thiosulfate. The formation of the composite was proved by XRD, XPS, AFM, TEM and HRTEM and proved that S QDs with a size of 1–3.5 nm were uniformly embedded in the surface of ultra-thin nanoporous g-C3N4, in which a tight and uniform 0D/2D heterojunction structure was designed and built. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic mechanism was investigated. It showed that the tight Z-Scheme heterojunction structure formed between S QDs and g-C3N4 improved the redox activity as well as the transfer ability of photogenerated electron holes. The system exhibited excellent photocatalytic efficiency that the complete degradation of RhB was achieved within 90 min under visible-light irradiation and revealed high stability. We believe that this research is important for the development of low-cost and efficient non-metal photocatalysts.
Stacking Engineering of Semiconductor Heterojunctions on Hollow Carbon Spheres for Boosting Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Fabrication of semiconductor heterojunctions into hollow nanostructures holds multiple intrinsic advantages in enhancing the photocatalytic performance but still faces lots of challenges. To overcome the obstacles, herein, we report an alternative stacking design of semiconductor heterojunctions on hollow carbon spheres for significantly improved photocatalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in CO2-to-CO conversion. In the smart design, CdS nanoparticles are first deposited on the hollow carbon and then selectively coated with ZnIn2S4 outer layers, producing a ternary C/CdS@ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst. The photocatalytic enhancements are attributed to the prominent features and merits of hollow carbon: (i) multiple light reflection and scattering in improving light harvesting; (ii) electron collection behavior in promoting charge separation; (iii) large surface area in increasing CO2 adsorption; (iv) highly active and selective sites for targeted reduction reaction; (v) porous shell in spatially separating reduction and oxidation half reactions; (vi) protective layer in preserving CdS from photocorrosion; and (vii) ideal architecture for the deposition of spatially separated redox cocatalysts. It is expected that the emerging design would be extended to other semiconductor heterojunctions if only the two semiconductors would be integrated into the core–shell nanostructure with a hole-accumulated shell and an electron-accumulated core.

Abstract:With the vigorous progress of industrialization, energy shortage and environmental contamination emerge increasingly serious. Photocatalysis technology is known as a hopeful approach to resolving the above crises owing to its numerous prominent advantages and widespread applications. Among various photocatalysts, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has been broadly applied in fields of fuel production and environment purification because of its unique electronic structure, extreme thermal stability, and prominent photoelectrical activity. However, single-component g-C 3 N 4 , similar to other photocatalysts, usually suffer from low photocatalytic efficiency due to the fact that single-constituent photocatalysts cannot synchronously equip with strong redox abilities of photogenerated charges and high light energy utilization. Fortunately, constructing Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions between g-C 3 N 4 with other semiconductor photocatalysts can simultaneously overcome the typical shortcomings of low light energy utilization, rapid recombination, and weak redox abilities of carriers, thus prominently boosting its catalytic reaction rate. In view of the currently extensive reports of g-C 3 N 4 -based S-scheme heterojunctions, this review presents a relatively comprehensive comment on the latest research progress of the background, the proposal of conception, fundamental theory, design and preparation, characterization methods of g-C 3 N 4 -based S-scheme heterojunctions. Additionally, various applications of g-C 3 N 4 -based S-scheme heterojunctions have been detailly illustrated through example discussion and list comparison, involving photocatalytic H 2 generation, CO 2 reduction, H 2 O 2 evolution, pollutant degradation, and others. Finally, the research progress and shortcomings of g-C 3 N 4 -based S-scheme heterojunctions are summarized, and the future research direction is prospected.

G‐c3n4/sns2 Van Der Waals Heterostructures Enabling High‐Efficiency Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction has played an essential role in effectively utilizing solar energy for sustainable hydrogen production. Herein, a 2D/2D g-C3N4/SnS2 photocatalyst with vdW heterojunction is developed by self-assembly contacting SnS2 hexagonal nanoplates and g-C3N4 nanosheets. A reasonable Type-II charge transfer mechanism based on the vdW heterostructure is proposed and verified by hydroxyl radical generation test. Photocatalysts with vdW heterostructure enable high-efficiency H-2 production under the visible light illumination, of which the optimized rate is about seven times higher than that of SnS2. Experimental analysis and corresponding density functional theory simulation jointly identify that enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the optimized behavior of photogenerated carriers and promotional interaction between reactants with catalysts. Specifically, charge redistribution and staggered band structure of the heterojunction intrinsically facilitate the efficient interfacial charge migration and separation. Diminished free energy of surface hydrogen adsorption reveals the easier hydrogen adsorption-desorption for a composite system from the viewpoint of thermodynamics. This work may be attractive for the implementation of rationally synthesizing catalysts for efficient photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Design of highly efficient heterojunctions for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is of significant importance to address the energy shortage and environmental crisis. Nevertheless, the smart design of semiconductor-based heterojunctions at the atomic scale still remains a significant challenge hitherto. Herein, we report novel atomic CdS/ZnIn2S4 heterojunctions by in-situ epitaxially growing 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheets onto the surface of 1D defective CdS nanorods. The strong electronic coupling between defective CdS and ZnIn2S4 is confirmed by transient photocurrent response measurements, •O2− and •OH radicals experiments, and PL results, leading to accelerated interfacial charge separation and transfer. Additionally, the elevated charge transfer and electronic coupling are further confirmed by theoretical calculations. Consequently, CdS/ZnIn2S4 hybrids exhibit superior photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity to pristine CdS. Our findings offer a new paradigm for designing atomic 1D/2D heterojunctions for efficient solar-driven energy conversion.
Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of g-C3N4/Vs-SnS2/CdS through a sulfur vacancy-rich SnS2 induced charge storage effect

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production using semiconductors is one of the most promising routes for sustainable energy production. However, poor electron–hole separation and slow surface reactions of photocatalysts impede their performance. Here, a hierarchical hollow g-C 3 N 4 /Vs-SnS 2 /CdS tandem heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed. For the first time, the charge storage characteristics of S-vacancy-rich SnS 2 in photocatalytic applications were developed. Due to the charge storage properties of Vs-SnS 2 , more electrons accumulate on the surface of Vs-SnS 2 , which greatly improves the separation efficiency of charge carriers and prolongs the lifetime of charge carriers. The aggregation of electrons leads to the formation of Cd–S–OH chemical bonds, which is beneficial for the adsorption and activation of H 2 O. As a result, this catalyst shows an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 2.3 mmol h −1 g −1 . Encouragingly, electron storage signals were detected in the femtosecond transient absorption spectra of heterojunctions, and it was proved that the electrons stored in Vs-SnS 2 could be utilized in the photocatalytic process. This provides new insights into the electron capture and storage process of semiconductors with electron storage properties during photocatalysis.

Abstract:Among all well-studied photocatalysts, g-C3N4 has attracted significant research interest in various fields. However, the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in unmodified g-C3N4 is high, leading to a decrease in photocatalytic efficiency. In practical applications, it is often necessary to introduce appropriate amounts and types of surface cocatalysts to amplify the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. The heterojunctions between g-C3N4 and perovskite materials can facilitate efficient charge separation, leading to improved photocatalytic performance while maintaining the stability of the photocatalyst. In recent years, lead-free halide double perovskites, such as A2BX6, have been widely applied in the field of photocatalysis. In this study, we conducted systematic investigations on the band structures and charge transfer of g-C3N4/Cs2BBr6 (B = Pt, Sn, Ti) heterojunctions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and explored the interaction between the Cs2BBr6 (001) surface and the g-C3N4. The results show that the g-C3N4/Cs2PtBr6 as well as g-C3N4/Cs2SnBr6 heterojunctions exhibit staggered band alignment, which facilitates the migration of photogenerated charge carriers and enhances catalytic activity. Besides, the g-C3N4/Cs2TiBr6 heterojunction exhibited a straddling gap. Furthermore, the analysis of the density of states, charge density differences, and Bader charges reveals that the presence of an internal electric field promotes the partition of electron-hole pairs at the heterojunction interface, effectively suppressing the recombination of charge carriers. Therefore, depending on the specific metal ions at the B site in the g-C¬3N4/Cs2BBr6 structure, the resulting heterojunctions will exhibit different band alignments and photocatalytic performances. This work contributes to providing theoretical insights for the design of novel high-activity heterojunction photocatalysts.

S-Scheme Heterojunction/Single-Atom Dual-Driven Charge Transport for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The rational design and modification of heterojunction photocatalysts aimed at achieving fast charge transport and efficient photocatalytic performance is a central goal of solar-light-driven water splitting and hydrogen evolution, yet this remains a challenge. Herein, we prepare a hierarchical photocatalyst composed of a few-layer violet phosphorene (VP), cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles (NPs), and Pd single atoms (SAs) by a facile one-step ball-milling strategy. The underlying VP/CdS p–n heterojunctions are verified to adopt S-scheme directional charge transfer by combining in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. The atomically dispersed Pd sites of the low-valence state coupled with the VP/CdS S-scheme heterojunctions synergistically achieve ultrafast electron transport (2.2 ps), in which the interfacial Pd–S and Pd–P bonds serve as electron transfer channels. In addition, density-functional theory calculations reveal the key role of Pd atoms in the enhancement of light-harvesting capacity and optimization of proton adsorption thermodynamics. A visible-light hydrogen production rate of 82.5 mmol h–1 g–1 is attained by an optimal 1 wt % Pd–5 wt % VP/CdS photocatalyst, which manifests a 54-fold increase with respect to that of CdS NPs, in addition to an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 25.7% at 420 nm. This work showcases a valid combination of S-scheme heterojunctions and SAs for efficient charge separation promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and others.

Abstract:Fabricating neoteric photocatalysts with high-efficiency charge separation for solar-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge. Constructing strongly coupled two-dimensional (2D)-2D heterostructures is available to the charge spatial migration due to the regulation of the interlayer forces and electronic structures. In this work, we demonstrate novel 2D-2D SnS2/CdS heterostructures by loading SnS2 nanosheets (SnS2 NSs) onto CdS nanosheets (CdS NSs). The SnS2/CdS heterostructures possess a close face-to-face contact and strongly coupled interaction to improve the charge trasnfer kinetics, and the loading of SnS2 can enhance light absorption and suppress photocorrosion of CdS. The optimized S-Scheme SnS2/CdS heterostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity in lactic acid sacrificial solution under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), affording a highest hydrogen evolution rate on SnS2/CdS heterostructures with 35 wt% SnS2 (5.18 mmol g-1 h-1), which is approximately 6 folds higher than that of pure CdS NSs (0.87 mmol g-1 h-1). In addition, a highest apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 59.3% can be obtained at 420 nm. When methanol was used as the sacrificial agent, the hydrogen production rate can reach up to 3.27 mmol g-1 h-1, and the methanol is oxidatively reformed into methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH). This work provides a feasible method for designing strongly coupled 2D-2D heterostructure photocatalysts for energy storage and conversion applications.

Abstract:An elegant templating method has been developed for the rational design and synthesis of hierarchical SnS2 nanoclusters composed of ultrathin nanosheets and embedded inside TiO2 nanoporous arrays. Herein, benefiting from their unique structural merits and metal-like plasmonic activity, the TiO2@SnS2 heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic H-2 evolution properties in terms of good cycling performance. S vacancies and N-doping are proved to be vitally important to the electronic structures and bandgap of SnS2, thus in-fluence the plasmonic property and separation of photo-carriers. The optimized TiO2@6-nmSnS(2)/N nanoporous arrays give an ultra-high H-2 yield rate of 285 mmol h(-1)cm(-2) under a low catalyst loading mass, that comparable to most noble metal catalysts. Remarkable cycling performance with a capability retention of 90% is achieved after 30 h under solar light illumination. As an innovative exploration, this study demonstrates that the photocatalytic activities of nonmetal, earth-abundant SnS2 can be enhanced with plas-monic effect, which may serve as an excellent catalytic agent for solar energy conversion to chemical fuel. Sn/Sn3O4−x heterostructure rich in oxygen vacancies with enhanced visible light photocatalytic oxidation performance

Abstract:Sn3O4, a common two-dimensional semiconductor photocatalyst, can absorb visible light. However, owing to its rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, its absorption is not sufficient for practical application. In this work, a Sn nanoparticle/Sn3O4−x nanosheet heterostructure was prepared by in situ reduction of Sn3O4 under a H2 atmosphere. The Schottky junctions formed between Sn and Sn3O4−x can enhance the photogenerated carrier separation ability. During the hydrogenation process, a portion of the oxygen in the semiconductor can be extracted by hydrogen to form water, resulting in an increase in oxygen vacancies in the semiconductor. The heterostructure showed the ability to remove Rhodamine B. Cell cytocompatibility experiments proved that Sn/Sn3O4−x can significantly enhance cell compatibility and reduce harm to organisms. This work provides a new method for the fabrication of a Schottky junction composite photocatalyst rich in oxygen vacancies with enhanced photocatalytic performance.
