Abstract:Stannaspherene refers to an icosahedral 12-atom Sn cage cluster (Sn-12(2-)) and has also been found to be able to trap all transition metals to form gaseous endohedral clusters (M@Sn-12(-)). During exploratory solution syntheses of endohedral stannaspherenes, a new closo-deltahedral cluster, Pd-2@Sn-18(4-), has been isolated as a (2,2,2-crypt)K+ salt through the reaction of K4Sn9 and Pd[P(C6H5)(3)](4) in ethylenediamine solutions and characterized via X-ray crystallography. The new Pd-2@Sn-18(4-) cluster has pseudo-D-3d symmetry and is composed of 18 Sn atoms encapsulating two Pd atoms. It can be viewed as the fusion of two endohedral stannaspherenes (Pd@Sn-12(2-)) along their C-3 axis by removing a Sn-3 triangle on each Sn-12 unit at the cluster-cluster interface. Electronic structure calculations show that Pd-2@Sn-18(4-) consists of a Sn-18(4-) cage with two zero-valent Pd atoms and possesses a highly stable electronic configuration.

Following Sn-12(2-), we coin a name, plumbaspherene, for the highly stable and nearly spherical Pb-12(2-) cluster, which is expected to be stable in solution and the solid state. Plumbaspherene has a diameter of similar to 6.3 angstrom with an empty interior volume large enough to host most transition metal atoms, affording a new class of endohedral clusters.

Magnetic Superatoms in Cage Doped 13-Atom Trimetallic Mg N Li12− N Sc (n = 1–8) Clusters and Their Assembled Discrete Supermolecules: a Theoretical Prediction

Abstract:Designing the novel cluster units is a major concern in the cluster assembled materials. With the aid of particle swarm optimization algorithm and density functional theory calculations, we have identified the geometric and electronic structures of 13-atom Mg n Li12-n Sc (n = 1-8) nanoclusters. The icosahedral structures are discovered as their respective global minima except Mg8Li4Sc, of which the cage structure is destroyed due to a magnesium atom outside the external metal cage. As the magnesium atoms increases, there is a sharp energy drop thereafter Mg5Li7Sc, and a large gain energy in Mg n Li12-n Sc (n = 3-5) is indicative of their especial stability. Molecular orbital analysis shows that the high stable clusters have the characteristics of magnetic superatoms. Then, the second stable magnetic cluster of Mg4Li8Sc is chosen as a possible building unit and the five-membered face-sharing motif is adopted. Mg4Li13Sc2 with the supermolecular properties are successfully constructed. Though the outer cage doped, this could to be a useful way to form the magnetic superatoms. Our findings further enrich building units that may aid in developing cluster-materials and tailoring their properties.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Using density functional theory, we designed novel cluster structure units with large surface areas for hydrogen storage through the surface functionalization of a stable Si12C12H24 nanocage with -CONH2 organic molecules and Li atoms. Two structures, namely, Si12C12H12\(CONHLi)(12) and Si12C12H12(CONLi2)(12), are proposed. The structures are stable at room temperature and show suitable hydrogen adsorption energies. Modification can enlarge the surface area of the two structures compared with the original cluster. In addition, the O and N anions participate in the adsorption of H-2 molecules in addition to the Li cations. The average hydrogen binding energy for Si12C12H12(CONHLi)(12)center dot 82H(2) is 0.135 eV/H-2 and the average hydrogen binding energy for Si12C12H12(CONLi2)(12)center dot 84H(2) is 0.134 eV/H-2 when these cluster structure units reach their maximum H-2 uptake capacity. The gravimetric hydrogen percentages are 13.18 and 12.60 wt%, respectively. With such a structural unit, a suitable linker allows the assembly of metal organic framework-like porous materials that display satisfactory hydrogen storage properties at room temperature. Abstract:Superatoms are promising as new building block materials that can be designed by precise controlling of the constituent atoms. Stannaspherene (Sn122–) is a rigid cage‐like cluster with icosahedral symmetry, for which one‐atom encapsulation was theoretically expected and detected in the gas phase. Here, a single‐atom introduction method into stannaspherene using a dendrimer template with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) protection is demonstrated. This advanced solution‐phase synthesis allows not only the selective doping of one atom into the cluster cage, but also enable further detail characterization of optical and magnetic properties that were not possible in the gas‐phase synthesis. In other words, this liquid‐phase synthesis method has enabled the adaptation of detailed analytical methods. In this study, FeSn12 was synthesized and characterized, revealing that a single Fe atom introduction in the Sn122– cage result in the appearance of near‐infrared emission and enhancement in the magnetism.

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of a new chlorostannate(II) hybrid material, 2(C 4 H 4 FN 3 O).SnCl 6 .2(H 2 O), 1 . The structure studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a zero-dimensional (0D) [SnCl 6 ] 2− octahedra surrounded by protonated Flucytosine cations (C 4 H 4 FN 3 O) + . The molecular packing is maintained stable via hydrogen bonds N/C/OH···Cl, and NH···O hydrogen bonds, and Cl/F···π interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis showed that the most significant contacts in crystal packing are H···Cl/Cl···H interactions (41.2 %), H···O/O···H interactions (11 %) and N···Cl/Cl···N interactions (10.4 %) interactions, respectively. The band gap energy of the material was measured to be 3.6 eV, indicating the semiconductor behavior of the material. The theoretical calculations were carried out using DFT and TD-DFT methods to appraise the molecular geometry, electronic absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals (FOMs), and global reactivity descriptors. Calculations reveal that the energy gap (E g ) and other chemical reactivity descriptors are primarily linked to the inorganic anion, and the organic cation, reflecting their importance in the activity and the antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Two air and moisture-stable ZnI-containing metal–organic frameworks {[ZnI8ZnII3(H2O)x(HL)12](OH)2⋅13 H2O}n (x=6, 1; x=2, 2) (HL=tetrazole monoanion) with high-nuclearity Zn cages were first prepared by combining ZnII ions and multicenter-bonded [ZnI8] clusters with cubic aromaticity. The resulting frameworks were analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Interestingly, 1 can behave as a potential luminescent probe to detect toxic CrVI ions in water. Abstract:We report here the synthesis and characterization of two new members of the M2E12 family of endohedral Zintl clusters, [Fe2Sn4Bi8]3– and [Cr2Sb12]3–, both of which contain open-shell metal dimers encapsulated inside a triple-decker cluster of main-group atoms. The 75-electron [Fe2Sn4Bi8]3– cluster has a D 4 h -symmetric structure, while [Cr2Sb12]3–, despite having the same 75-electron count, is strongly distorted to a geometry that resembles a CrSb8 crown capped by a CrSb4 unit. The structural differences between the two are driven by the increasing availability of 3d electron density in the earlier transition metal, which leads, ultimately, to different electronic configurations in the two clusters. The trends precisely mirror those observed in the ME10 and ME12 families containing a single transition metal ion.

Abstract:Fullerenes have the characteristic of a hollow interior, and this unique feature triggers intuitive inspiration to entrap atoms, ions or clusters inside the carbon cage in the form of endohedral fullerenes. In particular, upon entrapping an otherwise unstable metal cluster into a carbon cage, the so-called endohedral clusterfullerenes fulfil the mutual stabilization of the inner metal cluster and the outer fullerene cage with a specific isomeric structure which is often unstable as an empty fullerene. A variety of metal clusters have been reported to form endohedral clusterfullerenes, including metal nitrides, carbides, oxides, sulfides, cyanides and so on, making endohedral clusterfullerenes the most variable and intriguing branch of endohedral fullerenes. In this review article, we present an exhaustive review on all types of endohedral clusterfullerenes reported to date, including their discoveries, syntheses, separations, molecular structures and properties as well as their potential applications in versatile fields such as biomedicine, energy conversion, and so on. At the end, we present an outlook on the prospect of endohedral clusterfullerenes.

Abstract:Although a non-IPR fullerene cage is common for endohedral cluster fullerenes, it is very rare for conventional endofullerenes M@C-2n, probably because of the minimum geometry fit effect of the endohedral single metal ion. In this work, we report on a new non-IPR endofullerene Sm@C-2v(19138)-C-76, including its structural and electrochemical features. A combined study of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT calculations not only elucidates the non-IPR cage structure of C-2v(19138)-C-76 but also suggests that the endohedral Sm2+ ion prefers to reside along the C-2 cage axis and close to the fused pentagon unit in the cage framework, indicative of a significant metal-cage interaction, which alone can stabilize the non-IPR cage. Furthermore, electrochemical studies reveal the fully reversible redox behaviors and small electrochemical gap of Sm@C-2v(19138)-C-76, which are comparable to those of IPR species Sm@D-3h-C-74.

Molecular Cages as Encapsulants for the Stabilization of Reactive Iron-Sulfur Cofactor Models

Abstract:Iron-sulfur clusters are desirable targets for bioinspired synthesis due to their versatility in promoting a range of catalytic reactions (N2 reduction to NH3, CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons, and selective C–H functionalizations) and ability to serve as model systems for the systematic interrogation of structure and mechanism. However, a challenge in replicating the activity of clusters remains their instability outside of the protein scaffold. Previous efforts to mitigate this challenge include incorporation into polymeric and aerogel networks and artificial metalloenzymes or installation of bulky, strong-field ligands, but none of these retain both the native weak-field primary ligand sphere and capacity for molecular-level tuning of the cofactor and second coordination sphere. Herein, we present a new strategy for stabilizing weak-field synthetic clusters and conferring second coordination sphere functionality via encapsulation inside molecular cages. Thus, clusters [Fe4S4(SR)4]2– ([1a-c]2–: R = Ph, CH2CH2OH, tBu) are encapsulated inside tetrahedral naphthalene diimide (NDI)-functionalized cages [M4L6]8+ (M = Fe, Ni, Zn) via a robust and generalizable electrostatic binding strategy. 1H and DOSY NMR, ESI-MS, and 57Fe Mössbauer studies confirm immediate and quantitative binding and suggest the cluster electronic structure is minimally perturbed by the cage. At the same time, the cage’s redox-switching ability is demonstrated in CV and 57Fe Mössbauer studies demonstrating that NDI reduction renders the encapsulated cofactors [1a-b]2– significantly more reducing, consistent with their effective charge donation to the cofactor via pi-pi stacking and H-bonding interactions. Importantly, cofactor reactivity is maintained as demonstrated in diphenylacetylene reduction trials, showing that the encapsulated clusters are not only structural but also functional cofactor models. Combined, these results demonstrate that molecular cages can function as protein-like encapsulants to site isolate, tune, and deliver substrate to functional weak-field models of bioinorganic cofactors, and support the use of molecular host-guest complexes as functional enzyme mimics for both catalytic and structure-function studies.

Actinide endohedral inter-metalloid clusters of the group 15 elements

Abstract:Inter-metalloid clusters in Zintl chemistry have been extensively studied due to their unique electronic structures and potential applications. In this work, we explored a series of actinide endohedral inter-metalloid clusters of the group 15 elements [An@Bi12]4- (An = Th-U) and [An@Sb12]4- using density functional theory (DFT). [Th@Bi12]4- and [U@Bi12]4- exhibit Cs symmetry, while [Pa@Bi12]4- and [An@Sb12]4- (An = Th-U) have C1 structures. Bonding analyses such as bond order, molecular orbitals (MO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) show covalent An-Bi/An-Sb bonding in the clusters. All these clusters are highly stable according to the studied formation reactions and may be accessible experimentally. Compared with [An@Bi12]4-, [An@Sb12]4- possesses stronger bonding interactions, mainly arising from the higher electrostatic interaction energy. For clusters with the same group 15 elements, the bonding interactions increase gradually from Th to U, which is mainly determined by the covalent interactions of An-Bi/An-Sb bonding. This work is expected to provide potential avenues for the construction of robust inter-metalloid clusters of the group 15 elements.
